- Assembling, building and painting a 1:48th Nashorn scalemodel tank from Tamiya, manning it with a Goblin crew and building a small display base - Whilst talking about some differences and common nominators between scalemodelling and tabletop miniature painting. As an interloper (refugee?) from the military modeling world, I love your project and videos, and so I've been looking forward to this episode! I don't know if the fantasy/military hobby divide is that large-- a fair number of my YT military model colleagues are also fantasy and sci fi fans. But that's just an anecdotal rather than statistical or scientific observation. Anyway, goblins with a Nashorn is an inspired combination and I love it! The oil streaking is brilliant and I'm glad you used the green; something a bit different on a vehicle of German origins but most appropriate for Goblin armor, I think. And yes, scale modelers dry brush. And use wet palates. 😉 At least this one does. And the talented scale modelers even paint NMM, although I haven't reached that pay grade yet! Thanks Alex. Thanks Mark, I'm glad to have you interloping and I'm sure your talk about scale models has inspired me.
I didn't see much evidence of NMM when I was playing closer attention to scale modelling than I do now, but that's not to say it wasn't out there. What was popular however was NMF, or natural metallic finish, getting your metallic finish to look properly metallic and reflective, rather than just generically shiny. Similar acronym, but kind of the opposite intention! Some brands, such as Alclad/HR Hobbies, have some products that can produce some impressive NMF results.
Its wide because of gamesworkshop and their insistence to paint in a particular manner.
I love the idea of this whole diorama being a dream, or hallucination, of one of the Nashorn's crew. Goblins in German uniforms crewing his precious tank destroyer. That would be a hilarious story
I really like the "hobbyist about town" footage. Pondering in front of a paint rack is something we can all relate to.

Another "both sides of the divide" viewer, for not having built a scale model since childhood, that is a rather impressive return. For the depths of detail high end scale modelers go to, I can definitely recommend Night Shift as a channel to check out - Martin produces unreal results.
Tabletop painter here. That dot filter is absolutely about to become my secret weapon in making paneling not look so flat and dull in my minis!

I love these scale/mm hybrid dioramas. I prefer mm modeling because I have BIG, MEATY, CLAWS, but I love the painting techniques that only scale modelers seem to have the patience for.
Those stop motion self assembly models are the bomb.

"the urge to put paint on plastic and forget about time" is one of many wonderful moments - lovely video showing the usual care, consideration and judgement, at a length to really require a large mug of tea and possibly *extra* biscuits. Just great. Those goblins are a friendly fire incident in the making, though - whoever gave them command of an 88mm anti tank gun is sorely in need of better advisors

my entry to the hobby was when my father bought me a model fighter plane. This video made me quite nostalgic looking at all the scifi and fantasy miniatures I paint today
I have been a scale modeler for more than forty years, I have gotten in miniatures over the last few years. I have been kitbashing the two; different mediums, techniques, scales......super fun.
I love that in Germany you can have amazing hobby stores like that. I live in Southern California and stores like these are extinct. Man, I miss living in Wurzburg.....

As someone who does both scale modeling (model trains and the like) and wargaming miniature painting, this video made me smile. I have used Warhammer 40k miniatures on my O scale (1/48) model railroad and have received a lot of compliments on their use. It's always fun to see when people notice them.

Fantastic work Alex, love to see more crossover stuff like this. I've dabbled in both camps over the years. One thing I love about scale modelling is that is is history and no one is going to retcon my collection of WW2 tanks out of history like they might with my space marine army. Also my airbrush would've come in very handy when I was painting 100s of space marines all those years ago. 52 Miniatures is up there on my subscriptions just as much as Nightshift or Plasmo. Hope the algo treats you right so we get more like this.

@@Idengard I'm an armour guy and sometimes I think the divide between us and the flyboys is wider than the one with the miniature guys. Although having said that it might be fun getting a goblin in a cockpit.
It has always been fascinating to me, this gap between historical and realistic and more fantasy and for games. And I hope that we all can learn much from each other.
Imagine cleaning a Space Marine of any embelishments and weathering it like a ww2 tank? Or on the contrary, flooding a histrical vehicle with plethora of tiny elements and bright colors?

From what I’ve learnt from doing historical miniatures and from friends who do fantasy ones is that most of the time, historics are like fantasy but with a more agreed upon lore, the two are like siblings, can peacefully co-exist despite some low level bickering between extremists of the crafts. I think that each side can learn a lot from the other.

Tamiya kits are a joy to assemble. Right up there with the amazing engineering of Gundam bandai kits. Yes, yes, I know, gundam kits. Not our thing. But if you want to experience the highest level of assembly precision with minimal cleaning or even glue try a cheap HG kit. Maybe diorama it somehow. Anyway, sort of the ramble there. I've picked up more than a few Tamiya for purposes of Pulp settings with the aforementioned Pulp Alley (although the rules can house any setting/theme). I'll have to give this dot filtering a try. My goodness, you make it look so good. Please can we have a patron saint. It's not fair that even fishermen have patron saints. My uncle has always been a scale modeler. We've been bonding a lot lately and sharing our different techniques. It's been quite enlightening. I gain more skills on making vehicles look better and he learns quicker methods for getting his people done on dioramas with more detail popping. All in all, a lovely video break with coffee. I've been both a scale modeller and a miniature painter and I too have found it curious that the two hobbies are so similar in some ways yet so separate in others. Your example of their different approaches to oil and enamel paints is spot on (though it does seem that for regular painting scale modellers are slowly moving more towards acrylic paints). In the other direction I remember seeing a scale modeller on a forum expressing delight and amazement at having discovered Nuln Oil, something nobody else on that thread had heard of! And to partly answer your question about wet palettes - they're something I only discovered once I came back to miniature painting, I don't remember hearing about it while I was only building scale modellers.
I do remember hearing about sprue goo from scale modellers years before it spread to the miniature painting side of things though!

@@52Miniatures I tried some Contrast paints on a tank commander a couple of years ago. I ended up mostly painting over them with regular paints. Most Contrast paints are noticeably more intense than the rather muted greys, greens, tans, etc used on scale models so they looked out of place next to the sandy tones of the tank's armour. The main places I kept the Contrast paints visible were probably on the face and hands.
The nuln oil reminds me of another, as someone who came to painting from graffiti it was fun seeing all the modelers and prop makers discover Molotow Liquid Chrome - something I'd been using on walls for years 😂 and still maybe 2 pronouncing Molotow correctly compared to some of the Citadel range haha
I never got why modelers and miniature-ers don't talk either. I liked this build and I've enjoyed binging all your videos
This video was a great way to cap off an already great Thursday. What a great mash up. I used to make WW2 tank dioramas as a kid. I have several 40k "tanks" i have picked up but that I have put off building. This may be just the inspiration I need. And yes, I finally got a Phrozen 8k Mighty and it has been a fantastic purchase. On vehicle scale, we often have vehicles in our games at BunnyBadgerGames (mainly diecast rather than model kit) and found that 1:48 suits better too.
1:56 can work but often feel too tight for heroic scale gaming which has long since left "28mm" behind
being faar into terrain building i have been picking up skills and ideas from anywhere i can find it. and ill just say we are all friends, and having similar interests just means we all can go and have fun together. oh and i have to say the first angle of the complete diorama just gave me the vibe of one of those crew posing for a photo. anyway your little stories that you make for your videos with some philosophical questions always give me some joy listening to you.

Fun fact: back in the day, the firing of brick was done in large kilns using wood, which made for an uneven firing - therefore some bricks were "burnt". Nowadays the firing proces is more streamlined, but at least in Scandinavia you can still find some brick companies firing bricks the old-fashioned way. :)
Indeed! I have a friend who is a ceramics artist. She wood burns her art pieces with different wood and stuff for different glazing effects and heat burn “signatures”. Pretty cool.

28mm mini's are 1/56 scale so 1/48 or 1/35 tanks work well.
I used some modified WW2 tanks in 1/35 scale for my 40k dioramas back in the late 80's.
I also used a 1/32 helicopter as a dropship
I love how the shell is 5 times the size of the barrel
Goblins usually use imperial measurements but the quartermaster uses metric. Such problems!
@@NewSquallor worst case scenario, they blow up with the tank, best, they blow themselves and nothing happens to the tank.

That tank looks amazing. (And if you'll allow me to be a bit pedantic, it's technically classified as a tank destroyer. Basically a mobile gun platform for carrying an anti-tank gun and enough armor to shield the crew from small arms and shrapnel. The Chieftain here on TH-cam has a bunch of videos on tanks and armor development in the interwar period.)
As for patron saints of hobbying, there's scale models, wargaming minis, dioramas, scratch building, and kit bashing, so call it five saints? :P

I'm a scale model kind of guy but I've always admired the fun people have painting fantasy models, with scale modelling you have to follow such direct directions (?) Which isn't made any easier by my lack of oil paints/pigments So I've been trying to learn from both the realistic approach of scale modelers and the more direct approach of fantasy modellers

Neat timing, I working on something similar. I'm currently building a 1/48 scale Blackhawk helicopter for my Spectre Operations force. I haven't built this kind of model since I was like 12, which is not coincidentally about the same time I discover Gundam models. It's amazing the difference between traditional scale models, wargaming vehicles, and gunpla.

Resin casting has always been problematic, often ridiculously fragile, and I think you're correct in saying that 3d printing resins have developed so much that they eclipse the traditional cast resins.

Right out of Heavy Metal magazine from the 1970's!!
I am a fan of using a Buff color for drybrushing mil vehicles. The color is softer and still contrasts enough to bring out the highspots. Hard white and black I reserve for certain tonal changes.
I recently began using a wet pallet. Greatly improves the painting experience.
I greatly enjoyed watching your process, and loved hearing the thinking behind it, whether you were being philosophical, pragmatic, or humorous: three traits that all mini enthusiasts need to succeed. I'm getting back into painting minis after a very long break, and my focus will be on out-of-context dioramas such as these. So thank you for your insights and inspiration!

Honestly don't know what all the fuss is over minis verse scale models.
When going to the boomer hobby store and explaining my current project and what I need, I get attentive support and advice, same when I walk into a wargaming focused store.
I just like making things.
I love it! The seriousness of the tank combined with the weirdness from the small goblins makes this scene really special and a great testament that we infact can be friends across hobbies, wether it be scalemodels folks, warhammer nerds or train entusiasts! I personally have used scalemodel builders tutorials for my Leman Russ' and other IG vehicles.
