@@dmont I guess you didn't know about Pompeii. The prototypical Plinian eruption in 079 A.D. because Pliny the Elder perished there....Mt. St. Helens '80 was another one.

@@jj4325 I don't know how he could do the echoes tour without it. I know I've never seen David perform it without Richard, but Nick has his own band so I don't think he has the same qualms about it as Gilmour.

IMHO ... this is the best rock song ever performed. Pink Floyd had the ability to showcase the best master-craft abilities which compliment each other and never step on one another. Each individuals sound is beyond expression but when combined ... your soul is touched by something magical. This is Pink Floyd.

Yes, saw them live touring dark side of the moon then, too. And two more times after that. Last time was the '94 Pulse tour at a football stadium that sat 90k. Their music will out live us all. Amazing stuff.
If you fast forward about 35 years, you can listen to the same track, in it's integral version. The Live in Gdansk was the last time ever that track was performed Live since Richard Wright (on the keyboards) passed away not long after. It is 25 minutes of pure perfection!

I saw them live about six months after this was filmed at the Manchester Free Trade Hall. The movie wasn't out yet, but when it came out I took a 30 mile bus ride to go to the movie theatre that was playing the film. I was sitting about 30 feet from them when they played this. I just couldn't believe the sounds Gilmour was getting out of his guitar. He was just so damn good, even at that age (50 years ago in six days time) There's a very good bootleg here on TH-cam of the show I was at (March 30th). I was younger than this young man hosting the video here. Imagine what that did to me. It changed my life. It's great to see their music still slaying a new generation of fans. Oddly enough I think my generation knew we were lucky. Our whole lives rotated around music. Little wonder.
I saw the movie of this concert (well, most of it!) when it first appeared in cinemas around 1972/73. My girlfriend at the time was only 15 and under strict instructions not to be home late, so watching the end of the movie would have meant we missed her last bus, but we pushed it as far as we could and left the cinema only about 5 minutes from the end of the movie and ran all the way to the bus stop.
Of course, I've seen it in its entirety a number of times since then, and now I always watch it from beginning to end. That girlfriend has been my wife for the last 42 years, so there's no reason for us to rush outside before the end!

Echoes in Pompei, I get chills every time I listen to it. Sensitivity, space, rhythmics, everything is in its place.
100% right -- Pink Floyd takes the listener on a ride -- innovative, emotive, brilliant music, coupled with profound, relevant, philosophical, timeless lyrics.
I think this is one of the best displays of Nick's talent

I think this is Pink Floyd at their most self-aware. They knew they were timeless. They saw that realization trigger Syd Barret's complete descent into a madness he'd only had difficulties with previously. That loss triggered greater revelations, I'm sure, But they saw their moment very clearly and this was them singing to an archeological amphitheater that dates to two millennia before. They are performing to the ages, consciously, openly. The sheer gall. Literally heroic music.
12:10 - 13:20 some of the most awesome guitaring in rock, that first note he holds out... damn! David Gilmour is such a badass guitarist.
You should do the studio version, it is one of the most amazing compositions of the 20th century..
That is true, but this Pompeii version has a power and energy that the studio version lacks. They are both absolutely wonderful in their own right.

As a teenager in the 70's we transitioned from AM Radio to FM Radio, where there were stations that would play these epic-length songs! We would get high and just get lost in the music. Thank you for sharing your music discovery journey with us. Love your reactions. #suchavibe #Peace

This was the second side of their Meddle album and was certainly their " Hold my beer" moment. They followed up w/ Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals AND The Wall, quite a run. . !
You left out Obscured by Clouds which was right after Meddle. Great album as well, wonderful layered sound that paved the way to Dark Side. It's the band without the backup singers, sax solos or sound sampless but with some studio techniques that were developed later for DSOTM.
Yeah, this song changed them from a good, but generic 60s band into something unique and special.

Meddle and Animals are my favorite Floyd albums. Although I really do love some syd songs on piper at the gates.

D. Mont - Until quite recently I did not even know that such a thing as "reaction videos" even existed. I grew up in an era of slide rules and punch cards. We did however have vinyl, reel-to-reel, and other analog recording/playback media. There, I'm now carbon dated. I have (had... wait for it) every PF release available since their collaborative conception, beginning with their first official release 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn'. In some cases I have 2-3 copies, particularly the early work, including original vinyl artwork on the internal sleeves. I've read many comments to your reaction videos about you discovering, exploring and ultimately appreciating the true artistry that you have found. In particular, the comments from many of us long time 'Animals' of how refreshing it is to witness someone discover this music for the first time. I absolutely agree, but I would like to add; I sometimes go 3-5 years without immersing myself in their gift to humankind. When I do, and after having accumulated just a few more life experiences, the music is altered slightly in my mind to include those "new" memories. Although the music is the same, it can seem like a first time experience. What these gentlemen did will be remembered for centuries.... My (then) 12 year-old-daughter, who is now on a path to begin her medical research residency, would thumb through my boxes of LP's, sometimes asking questions for hours. I got her a super cheap low fidelity portable turn table, and she never looked back. I gave her my entire collection to enjoy and pass on to future generations that I will never know; with the caveat that it never fall into the hands of a future rogue family crackhead that will pawn it for a bag of blow.... With your willingness to explore such diverse tastes, you have discovered an amazing thing that I'm sure will last a lifetime. There is so much more out there to discover. Enjoy the journey.... As a recommendation; if you ever have an opportunity to listen to some of this music with analog playback, it will absolutely blow your hair back. Digitized playback is good and certainly convenient, but the difference in quality is like the difference between night and day.
It’s hard to beat Pink Floyd in their prime… no one makes music like they did. Creative geniuses.

Oh thank the gods you went with the live version. This is one of those relatively rare songs where the live version is just something so much more special than the studio.
Am working my way through your reaction video's & find myself coming back to this one often. In my opinion Pink Floyd is the greatest rock band of all time and Echoes is their masterpiece. Rogers Waters built each song the way an architect would build a cathedral. Outstanding & meaningful lyrics, so many levels and no song is rushed. Each song allows time and space to drop into it's meandering journey with each band member beautifully showcased. Even after David's guitar solo's he always turns the song back to the band so the journey can continue. They built in subtleties such as who sings what verses depending if the song called for David's clear & pure tone, Roger with his unique, hollow and sometimes haunting voice and Richard with his raspier tones. David and Richard in particular, bounced off each other so beautifully.
Each song IS a wandering experience and it is an honor to live on this crazy rock... barreling through the emptiness of space as the same time as Pink Floyd was creating their art. It is timeless music.
I am grateful to be seeing your life change in these Floyd reactions. Much love, you feel like an old friend. Cheers buddy, this makes my whole life better.
As stated below, the Floyd returned to Pompeii about 35 years after this.
I would urge you to look up and read about the ancient city of Pompeii...it only adds to the significance of this performance. I have been to this exact spot...talk about tears of joy and amazement!! The amphitheater they are playing in is over 2000 years old. Let that sink in.

This live show, is from Pompeii. 2000 years ago where Mt Vesuvius wiped out an entire civilization overnight basically and the volcanic ash preserved the dead bodies and turned them to statues almost. So it's like they're performing to the dead "statues" of pompeii. Also, the amphitheater is the colleseum where gladiators used to have their tournaments and even had a famous riot that happened there. Ads to the mystique and deep mind fuckery of how amazing this performance is. Also worth noting this album performance is on Spotify and its definitely worth listening to while fucked up on edibles or LSD
In 2016, David Gilmour came back to Pompeii at the coliseum for a live concert this time with a live audience with his solo band. Some members of his solo band played as part of Pink Floyd. Since, Richard Wright passed away years ago. I think David is still playing. While I don't know if drummer, Nick Mason joining him or retired. Former member and founder of PF, Roger Waters still doing his solo stuff too.

I was incredibly high as a 15 year old while listening to this shit for the first time and it was the best trip of my life. I could physically feel my soul leaving my body as it hit the 7 minute mark. Some crazy shit.

So pleased to watch someone new enjoy pink floyd. I first heard pink floyd when i was fourteen im now 64. the first record i ever bought was dark side of the moon. I put their music on everynight to go to sleep too. Enjoy i wish i could listen to them for the first time like you, ill enjoy the music through you.
One thing about this particular recording is that you really can't work out which is the most predominant instrument, as all four seem to be upfront and central to the entire experience. All four are assaulting your mind all at once. They all come together in some kind of perfect harmony of pure groove. Even the groove is indefinable as you can't think of anything that ever sounded quite like it, or indeed anything like it. Even more astounding today, as nothing ever has sounded anything like it since.

Dang, first reaction video I've ever watched and this was great, exactly how I felt when I first heard this. Exactly on point about the video too, way ahead of it's time, and right about how they just went out and showcased their talent. I remember when the Beastie Boys did a sort of tribute to this on Check Your Head, with the video for Gratitude, which was what first turned me on to look for the VHS of this concert back in the day.

I 1st heard Pink Floyd it was in 1977, the sing was Shine on you craze diamond with headphones. From the 1st note I was hooked. 20+ yrs later can't get enough. I've seen twice, 1st time favorite concert , 2nd time, 2nd favorite concert.
They were so young! Hard to believe this song is 50 years old, eh? So glad I grew up with them & loved your reaction…don’t know how I missed it. Will see if you did part 2. For something else by them, listen to “Marooned” - the only song they ever won a Grammy award for. Hard to get anyone to react to that! Do the studio’s version, not the video. I'm just glad to see other people getting into Pink Floyd. I was lucky growing up, my mom loves them. All my younger years are full of their music, even watched The Wall when i was 4. Of course my mom made me look away in a few parts but sharing that experience with her will be with me until the day I die

Some of the weird parts about listening to Pink Floyd, especially some of Dark Side of the Moon album, is finding yourself weeping and not really knowing why. The combo of the members where they can rip your soul out with a guitar solo, beat it with a tenderizer and then put it back in place and you are wiped out when the song or album is over... and happy about it and after discovering them, you can't shut up about them and must tell all your friends, or give them a,"Dude, YOU HAVE to listen to this". Then the lights go out, and you just listen...

This was made in 1971 or '72. They played years later @ Pompeii again, but I like this one best. Looking forward to your continuing Pink Floyd journey.

Hey man bensjamin in Galway Ireland, love your respect towards great music sheep on the album animals by pink Floyd is class , also queen at live aid also led zeppelin in my time of dying off physical graffiti which is a cover off a black American blues lady from the 1930s I can’t remember her name of which I feel rude because led zep are my favourite band of all time and out of respect for her I should know it , keep the videos going, I’m recovering from a brutal cancer surgery lost most of my tongue so my speech is hard and I can’t eat and I was a chef most my life but the reaction videos are sending me healing vibes big time

They were not fans of loud audiences. They were the classical performers of rock. They had nuances that had to be really listened to.

With that ENORMOUS stage rig they ran in the old days, listening to them live back in the day was absolutely visceral. It went right through you.
Back before decent pa systems were a thing they just had to use walls of amps. Fun fact, loads of bands throughout 80's and 90's used big walls of fake amps just for looks and only 1 would be real which was used as an on stage monitor.
It is awesome to see people from different generations regardless of their genre of choice to feel Floyd’s vibe. They are the GOAT of musical experience.

Such a genuine respectful reaction to one of the greatest rock songs and performances ever. The vocal is my favourite of all PF songs. The guitar work is my favourite of all PF songs. For a song with similar intensity and build look up Masterdon Hearts Alive (Live) 11mins 38seconds - the one recorded Los Angeles CA - April 2005. It details this at the start of the video. No surprise the rock band are Big PF fans!

I absolutely LOVE that you chose to watch the 1972 Pompeii version of this song, which is spectacular. However, you are really missing out if you don't watch the full version, which is well over 20 minutes long. There is a lot more to the intro that is cut out of this video, and a whole final set that comes back into the song after this. The whole thing end to end is unbelievable. In any case, great work and I love your reaction on this one!

Nice reaction, man. You definitely need to hear the studio version of "Echoes ". It's over 20min but well worth the time. In fact, I love the idea of you reacting to the entire albums. Meddle was their fifth studio album and it preceded Dark Side of the Moon. If any band deserves full album reactions it's certainly Pink Floyd (I'd also throw Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull & Yes in there too) and you really seem to enjoy this great music. Peace & love to you.

The song is 50yrs old ! , I was fortunate to see Pink Floyd ( my fav band ) in 1989 then Roger Waters ( my fav lyricist ) in 2018

This is one of my favourite tracks from pink floyd I strongly recommend you watch and listen to this same track performed in concert in gedanken I think it was in2006 it is absolutely awesome for me it was perfection in every aspect I'm a 72 year old fan and after all of these years they are for me and I now millions of other fans the greatest progressive rock band ever your just starting on a fabulous musical experience I envy you because I now the pleasure and emotion you will enjoy as I have pink floyd are like a wonderful musical drug that you can't get enough of man I'm on a no stop musical trip and loving every minute of it enjoy
