Alot of people don't realize that they had provide all of the power and everything in order to do this and was done at the same time as Dark Side of the moon
This is a Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii - the city that was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in ancient times and then uncovered in modern times. They literally played a gig to no one (but the road crew and camera / recording folks) in an ancient Roman theatre. First time there had been live entertainment there in 1900 or so years. Completely wild.

I think there's footage out there either with one of the band members or someone on the crew/management who said that there were 3 kids who snuck in and wanted to watch. They were spotted and told that if they watched quietly and stayed put in one spot, they could watch the performance. So somewhere in that amphitheater - outside of the shots' framing - 3 Italian kids got to witness one of the dopest live performances ever recorded and I bet they tell that story every year at Christmas.

True story. In 1978 I was VP of my high school student council. Every year on senior day we would go to the HS auditorium and watch a movie that the student council picked out. Well, somehow I convinced the rest of the council (must have been my undeniable charm) to pick this one, Pink Floyd at Pompeii!
Needless to say a few young minds were either warped or completely blown that fine day.
Sometimes Pink Floyd has had two or more people singing the same vocals at the same time, but other times Gilmour double tracks himself, offset by a fraction of a second.
This was live, one of the best performances ever. You will also need to watch part 2 of this song as there is another 10mins of this track to go. The video is in 2 parts but it’s one incredible 23min journey of a song

It's kind of funny that out of all the Echoes reactions on TH-cam, almost none of them ever actually watch Part 2. Pretty every reaction now matter how supposedly "blown away" they are by the music, they can't be bothered, apparently. I mean, you supposed to watch the whole thing at once. Watching part of a song and then waiting god know how long to finish it, kinda kills the vibe anyway.

It was filmed in '71, released in '72. "Echoes" is on their 1971 album "Meddle." David Gilmour on lead guitar and vocals, Rick Wright on keyboards and vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass. Andrew Lloyd Webber stole this riff for his musical "Phantom of the Opera." They decided not to sue him. You guys should do "Dark Side of the Moon" live at Pulse from '94; it's epic!
Waters referred to this as the precursor to dark side lyrically: “i am you and you are me” became “us and them”

Not just any city. Pompeii was destroyed and quite literally buried by a pyroclastic flow from a volcanic eruption in 79 CE. This was filmed in the old colosseum.

The famous black strat. David Gilmour auctioned his guitar collection for charity. The black strat alone made almost 4 million dollars. Bought by Jim Ersay the owner of the Indianapolis Colts. This is only part 1 there’s a part 2 equally as great.
I have seen that guitar in Irsay’s collection. Being a huge Floyd fan it literally gave me chills! Love this song, both parts one and two!

The comments have told you now, about Pompeii... LIVE, just meaning, NOT previously recorded. These guys performed this LIVE, but just to crew and such, as the Pompeii lava still smolders and the relics still stand, in part. Only Pink Floyd, right? Yes, this is part one of two. 👍
Who else but the Floyd would conceive of and produce a "live" concert film that takes place in an ancient Roman coliseum with no actual audience but the road and film crew. Gotta love these guys.
Btw, this song is off their album Meddle released in1971 prior to the release of DSOTM. While this is an awesome performance (and this is only part 1) the studio version is far superior. Also, this movie contains clips of them working on Dark Side in the studio...very cool stuff. Up to this point they were still considered an experimental or even avant-garde group that was known for their extended free form jams during their concerts. They made their living touring and making soundtracks for art house type films until the tremendous success of Dark Side provided them the resources to produce the legendary albums that followed.
Way, way, way ahead of their time.
I've been a huge fan of Pink Floyd since my early 20's when I first got out of the Marines. I'm now closing in on 72 years old and still I never get tired of listening to them.
Pompeii was destroyed by a volcano and was buried under 4 to 6 m of volcanic ash, the place still has people frozen in time as it happened, covered in and incased in ash like statues . its a strange place . and the floyd decided to play inside the roman amphitheatre, probably just because its a cool place to play some tunes . all my best to you and yours from Liverpool
For me this is the finest piece of music to have been captured on film.
Untouchable indeed, they and Led Zeppelin are in a league of their own and everyone else lines up behind them. You just viewed part 1, you need to do part 2 next. This amazing song opened and closed the documentary about that concert there. Also there are great takes of Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun and Careful With That Axe, Eugene! They split the song Echoes to start and end the movie with this song, on the album it is one track, takes the whole side. There were actually several evolving versions of this movie. The first contained only what they filmed at Pompeii, but then they added stuff when they were in studio working on the Dark Side of the Moon album. Includes behind the scene clips as well.

One of my favorites of all time. The lyrics are just badass! Gilmour is the King of Slow Hand! I don't care what anybody says. 🤣You guys are right, this was part of the "LIVE in Pompeii" video. You should see the whole thing. In between filming the LIVE stuff they show them working on recording the Dark Side of the Moon album. You get to actually see what they're using to make all of those cool sounds.

I was 17 the 1st time I saw Pink Floyd live at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia way back in September 1987. They opened the show with Echoes! My teenage mind was blown for real! I never thought I would ever hear it live. I was there with friends who are not here but are. RIP Bobby, Ruthie, JFK Stadium, & Mr. Mason. Floyd reminds me of good times. This was filmed in 1971, released in 1972, when the band members were around 25. 45 years later,in 2016, lead singer/vocalist David Gilmour returned to the same location to perform some Pink Floyd songs in front of a live audience.
Normally I don't like reactions to the live versions of songs but this is definitely an exception. One of my favorite performances of my favorite Pink Floyd song.
What's amazing is that this is done LIVE. For the time, to get such a GREAT live recording without the advantage of modern digital equipment is incredible. The harmonies of Gilmour and Wright are just incredible as well.

Among so many things to admire the Floyd on, the fact they invested early on in PA and equipment to get exactly what they wanted is one of my favorite things about them.

Any time you can see Gilmour making his magic is a great experience. Mason, Wright and Watters also have outstanding performances. This was a small part of the overall "concert".

Pompei was a city that was buried by the volcano Vesuvius in the year 59 AD, and was found and dug up back in the 1900s.
This was the first time anyone had played in that stadium in almost 2000 years. Maybe the first ever concert there.
And that footage of them walking around is from nearby at the still active volcano at the site in Italy.
So, they are playing this live at a stadium that was buried under lava and then carefully excavated over the past 50 years or so.

The David Gilmour, Richard Wright duet in this song is absolutely beautiful! This song, because of the harmonizing, created a special connection between the two of them that lasted until Ricks death from cancer in 2008.
Below is a link to this song, "Echoes", live in Gdansk Poland in 2006, just two years before Rick Wrights death. I've heard it's the last time the two of them, Gilmour and Wright, performed the song, it's a very special video in that regard alone.

Other than a few kids that snuck in the amptheater, there was no audience. Everyone you see in the shot other than the band is the crew. The kids were told they could stay as long as they didn't get in the way.

This was recorded for a special tv show. Everything went wrong. It was a 6 days session but it took 3 days to bring enough electricity. So they filmed only 3 songs ( Echoes, One of these days and Sauceful of Secrets) and the rest was made in a studio in Paris.

David Gilmour guitar, and Richard Wright keyboards, had very similar voices. Richard was maybe and octave higher but they complimented each other very well. David Gilmour went back to Pompeii and recorded a solo show just a few years ago with a full audience. It's great!
That's David Gilmour guitarist, and Richard Wright keyboardist doing the main vocals on this. However David Gilmour, and bassist Roger Waters (not singing here) are the two main voices you hear on most of their most popular songs. Lots of trading off leads and harmonizing going on. All three have distinct voices that sound great together and serve the material well.
Back in the day before music videos, you could go to a movie theater and see stuff like this. Concerts, Festivals, etc., sometimes done in sort of a documentary form. We didn't have TV channels you could watch this stuff on, and it wasn't the big chain theaters either. They were the local independent "Art theaters" that played this stuff, along with foreign and "underground" movies.

The collusium was full that day, they put the concert on for the people who died..😏 they made enough noise to wake the dead put it that way, the acoustics of a round theatre are unbelievable though, I was in the choir as a kid and our cathedral is round..😳 Liverpool, home of the Beatles and the Catholic cathedral is known as Paddys wigwam 🤣🤣🤣 singing in there was amazing, the sound bounces around and comes back at ya, I first saw them 1974..the Liverpool Empire theatre, Dark Side of the Moon tour 😊 A-MAZ-ING....😳I got the Meddle album (Echoes) in1972 for my birthday off my brother..👍
Also, one of the founders of Pink Floyd went crazy, ended up in on a sale asylum they wrote songs like lunatic nine songs, dedicated to this gentleman, whose name escapes me, but he cofounded the band Pink Floyd, and was apparently the genius behind some of the music
nice reaction guys, fantastic unique band, as I think you said this is only half the song, you gotta to do part 2, or start again and do the whole song. When Echoes came out on vinyl in 1971 the song was the entire second side of the Meddle album, 23 minutes of perfection. All versions are amazing but the studio version is outstanding. Nick Mason(the drummer) is the absolute star of this performance. Everyone is grooving and feeding off of him. It's beautiful. Truly one of the most underrated drummers of his generation.

You guys are so young, I've been grooving to this song and this performance since I bought the record in the 70's, and got a hold of a VHS tape copy of the Pompeii docu-concert in about '81. The whole concert and documentary is available on DVD in case you want to see whole thing. Totally worth every penny. This band is the shit, was the shit, will always be the shit. In 500 years they will still be studied by music historians the same way we study Bach and Beethoven. Nice to see the universal power of music on a new generation!
This whole movie is a phenomenal example of their musicianship pre Dark Side! I was always rewinding my VHS version of this as a youth. It also has studio footage of them recording Dark Side of the Moon.

There are so many firsts that Pink Floyd used for this tune.
The opening note was Rick Wright playing a grand piano fed through and echo device (Binson Echorec) and also a Leslie speaker, which you may know is a setup with a speaker and an amp, and there is a rotating baffle siting in between the speaker and the amp. Produces a very distinctive sound. Both together is totally unique.
At the end of Echoes (which took up a whole side of the Meddle album, the one right before Dark Side of the Moon), they play a really crazy effect called a Shepard Tone, which is also known as the Barber Pole effect. It sounds like the notes keep getting higher and higher, but it is actually a loop. For the past 2 years Echoes has been my No.1 most played track on Spotify. The 2001/Echoes mix is just so tight, almost like Echoes was written for the part.
Great reaction! Don't forget Part 2 - you've only heard half of this epic song!! They split it into two for this video - it begins and ends the 'concert'. This version really amps up the groove from the amazing studio counterpart.

There's just something about the Floyd that is different, and I don't use that word lightly, like it is so overused in today's vernacular. Their music is overly simplistic but hits deeper than most bands who try to be complex and deep. Floyd knows how to craft a song. They have mastered the build, and they're also, as you said, getting you locked in on the groove. Mesmerizing. Nothing like them out there.

Back in the old days Pink Floyd was shrouded in mystery, they would release albums and have no pictures of the band in them, they would release music and you would hardly know anything about the band. Nowadays a quick Google search will tell you everything you want to know, but in those days? You would dig for glimpses.

These guys were so incredible as a LIVE group. I'm glad you got to this, but in reality, this is about half the length of the album version & I really think you should explore that one.
This is one of the best live performances, EVER.. Period! Music should be known as Before Floyd, and After Floyd. That tempo change, into that groovy, funky section makes my face melt, EVERYTIME I hear it. Floyd was like no other band, before or after. They will never be duplicated.. Just copied.

Still figures as one of the top ten coolest guitar solos ever played live. So cool cos relatively few notes played - so very economical! - but............man! the notes he chose, and the way he played them - and that awesome untouchable tone and vibrato! The mark of a genius. Gilmore even then, and so young, one of the world's best.
One of the effects Gilmour uses on his guitar work here, is that he played through a wah-wah pedal plugged in back to front, which was a mistake originally, but they found a way to use it musically to great affect.

Back in the day, this music was so far ahead of it's time, that few people could appreciate it. I had a few friends with whom I would listen to Pink Floyd every day, but most everyone I knew just could not get into it, and would actually laugh and tell me to turn it off if I played their records.
It was just over the head of so many people.
For one thing, people were used to hearing short songs with a certain structure, and anything outside of that format was just not interesting, or incomprehensible, or something.

The studio version of this is worth a listen, as well as other live versions in later years.

Gilmour played an absolutely stunning show at this same stadium in Pompeii back in 2016 I think it was.
I was not able to get over to see him play in Pompeii, but I did fly up from Florida to see him play Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden a few months before his show in Pompeii.
