This is real art! I love how all four of them shared their work. Gilmour in the guitar solo, Wright in the beginning with the mysterious keys, Waters on bass in the "funky" passage, and Mason perfectly rhythming this entire song. I love that guy! And the atmosphere of the empty ancient Roman amphitheatre is fascinating. I could watch this every day over and over again...

I saw the movie back then. I couldn’t believe my ear was listening to something so deep and profound and absolutely perfect. I went back four times to absorb it.

Totally. Important to listen to the entire piece. All the pieces of the entire “suite” compliment each other so much.
“Echoes” is my favorite Pink Floyd piece. And the album on which it first appeared, Meddle, my favorite album.
@@mst5g826 totally agree. Meddle is my favorite of theirs. And that’s saying something, because I have been a fan of theirs since 1972. Saw the Radio City Hall midnight show debut of Dark Side of the Moon. And they performed “Echoes” at that show also. Along with some of my other favorites: “Set The Control For The Heart Of The Sun”, “Careful With That Axe, Eugene”, “Obscured By Clouds”, “A Saucerful of Secrets” (I think that tour might have been the last time they played that last one live).
First set ended. They left the stage for a break. And came back and did the entire Dark Side of the Moon album. And their encore was “One of These Days”.
Still one of my top 5 favorite concerts of all time!
Undisputed best Gem from The Pink Floyd...
Richard wrights piano playing was damn awsome. Himself and David had such a great thing when playing there instruments, they just bounced back and forward with cool riffing parts.
And this is only the first part...
"Echoes" is my favorite piece in the Pink Floyd repertoire.
It has only one flaw: it is too short.
I gauge road trip time on how many times I get to listen to Echoes.

Richard Wright , the keyboardist , died a few years ago but the rest are alive and I believe still playing
Nick is still touring but I think Pink Floyd are over now. Well they have been over since 1987
@@worstxb1playertylerteehc635 more like 94 or so. Rick's death is the real end of Pink Floyd. Nick still tours doing the first 5 or 6 records.

When I was a teenager (in the 90s) my grandaddy gave me a record player. I went to a used record shop and bought the Meddle album bc I love Pink Floyd (a gift from my parents). This song was on the B side of the record and I would listen to it on repeat at night while I slept. ♥️♥️♥️
The album and especially this song is the moment they found the Pink Floyd sound. Echoes is perfectly crafted masterpiece.

Uncle worked for CAPITOL Records in 70s and 80s...i was 9 when he told my mother he was taking me to the Bronx Zoo for the day. He took me to see Pink Floyd The Wall Live in NY....it was my first real concert. Also got me to meet THE WHO, and into CBGB many times....that was my favorite, as I saw Legends of new Genres as The Police, The GoGos , Talking Heads, RAMONES, Billy Idol and countless others.

I actually thought live at Pompeii was not real... that I just saw it in my dreams... then I realized my dog has been dosing my coffee.

Playing in an ancient empty amphitheatre for the ghosts of Pompeii, Italy where a volcano destroyed the city in 79 AD. After Rick Wright (keyboards/vocals) passed away in 2008, David Gilmour (lead guitarist/vocals) would no longer perform Echoes. There is a part 2 of this song btw. Pink Floyd just released a new song: "Hey Hey Rise Up" in solidarity with Ukraine. David's daughter in law and grandchildren are Ukrainian. Pink Floyd is nothing short of brilliant.
They did have one fan watching. He ended up working for the tourist board. And helped David out when he went back again
They should do a song about Ukraine's Azov Battalion's war crimes in the Donbass region that is on the Russian border dating back to 2015 up until the present and their ties to neo-nazie's. 😲 How far the mighty have fallen and the antiwar people of the past have drank the kool-aid of the war profiteers. 🙄

I bought my first Pink Floyd album in 1969 (Ummagumma) and saw them live in 1971
and 4 more times after that. For me This is the BEST band of all times.
Now I'm 71 years old and still listen to them everyday.

A very famous writer "borrowed" some of this music for a very well known musical and it cost him a pretty penny in court. When you listen to most of the other Pink Floyd you can hear references to this music. I'm glad you enjoyed this. I can't think of another band that would go to such a place to record music along with the accompanying echoes without an audience and to use what they learned and produced in all of their music that followed.

The thought of doing it. The balls to do it. The labors to set it up. And, an empty coliseum... perfection in ruins.

one day after wrestling practice a few years ago, i was giving a couple kids rides home and our heavyweight, who had never listened to pink floyd, started freestyling over that beat. it was pretty cool.
Saw them in 77 in Chicago at Soldier Field. Great concert, may be the best outdoor concert I ever been too.
'The World Series of Rock' concerts at Soldier Field 1977. One night devoted exclusively to Pink Floyd Animals. Missed that one, but promised myself it would not happen again given the opportunity. Saw them in Chicago in '88, and back at Soldier Field 1994 (Pulse). Lucky enough to realize these were not just concerts, but history being made.
@@flubblert The 1977 Pink Floyd tour was in support for the "Animals" LP, no doubt. But, it wasn't 'exclusively devoted' only to the "Animals" LP that night, NO sir? I also went to the Pink Floyd-World Series of Rock concert in Cleveland @Cleveland Municipal Stadium in a record setting crowd attendance of over 83,000 fans. Now, Floyd did come out & play the entire "Animals" LP front to back with props of a giant pig balloon that came over the crowd & other ballooned animals on stage. However, after Floyd played "Animals," they followed that up playing the "Wish You Were Here" LP in it's entirety too! Along with a couple encore tunes from "DSOTM." Even though most of us know it as the Pink Floyd "Animals" tour, or "Pink Floyd-World Series of Rock" tour. It was actually called the "In The Flesh" tour, due to the "Animals" LP not selling as well as they expected. Either way it was definitely 1 of the greatest concerts I've ever seen, & it truly was history in the making at the Cleveland show for various reasons. Not to mention getting to see & hear Pink Floyd play 2 entire LP's at a outdoor stadium concert for $10.50 a ticket, pretty f%$kin cool! ++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul++

@@flubblert Right On! The reason I remember it so well was I was still a little dude & budding musician @13 who wanted to Rock! And, was very fortunate to have the coolest uncle who between him, his friends & me pleading with my mom, smooth-talked her, winning her over, otherwise I wouldn't have stood a chance. My uncle knew me & seen my love for music & my love for playing guitar. Plus, the fact it was the 70's & me an intercity kid with street smarts, it was all good. They still did their thing getting high, drinking, & tripping, but I also had 80 some thousand other people watching out for me too! That's just the way it was back then, especially a concert like Pink Floyd. Good people, good times, & good music! I was all about the music then, even though I still got a contact buzz, there was no escaping that, even being in an outdoor stadium, ya dig? ; ) Blah,haha!! PEACE 2 U my friend.
@@216Numbskull yeah the air gets pretty dense at a Pink Floyd concert. And I ain't talking about humidity! Never smoked the stuff myself, so have a pretty good recollection of the two times I've seen them. I suspect we're both ahead of the game in that respect. ☮️✌️

Dude, back in the mid 90's I worked in a video store. We had a copy of Live at Pompeii, and my coworkers would hide it because of how tired they got of me playing it. I literally wore it out. Echoes is hands down the best part, although A Saucerful of Secrets is a solid second
Cannot count how often I heard it and how many times it made me smile or process things or find creative ideas or feel new: this song is a portal through the universe and back, especially the second part, every time a different experience to discover human potential and dance with the ancient ghosts 😎😁
Saw this in a theater in 1974. I had only heard Dark Side of the Moon at the time. It was hard remembering the names of the songs so I spent a lot of time looking at Pink Floyd's records to find the songs I had heard in this film.

Back in 2016, 44 years later, David Gilmour did a live concert at the same ancient coliseum where his band played Echoes 1&2 for live audience actually making 1st time since 79 AD.
No, he didn't play 'Echoes' in that concert. Without Richard Wright (who had died) he said he would never perform the song again.

My man! So I hadn’t heard of Pink Floyd before Dark Side of the Moon. Echoes is off the album before Dark Side. Absolutely my favorite jam by Pink Floyd and all the band members played flawlessly together!! David’s guitar playing in the second half is INSANE! I saw Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, Tampa Stadium. IT WAS THE BEST CONCERT IVE EVER SEEN HANDS DOWN!! We were all just sitting there watching with out mouths hanging open. 💜

I was working in a coffeeshop in Amsterdam where they played alternative music and played video's as well. One evening I saw this video for the first time, high af. The switch halfway the track blew my mind.

Pink Floyd's drummer, Nick Mason, is currently touring with his band Saucerful of Secrets in the UK and they and playing this track.
They are still around, save the keyboardist, Richard Wright, who died in 2008. However, the two main parts of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters and David Gilmour had a falling out a long time ago. Floyd made 3 albums after Waters left in 1985. Their most recent album was in 2014 and that was their last album as Pink Floyd. The remaining members were still performing, including Waters who performs with other musicians.
Pink Floyd is Legendary Brah, they are a Vibe! I've been a huge Floyd fan since 1973 when they released their "Dark Side of the Moon" album, I was 17 years old in 73.
I have been fortunate enough to have seen them twice, once was the Incredible, Phenomenal, The Wall Performance in 1980.
They're so young in this video, this video, and this song is from 1971 from their "Meddle" album released in 71. They're all in their mid 20s here!
They were great fans of Blues and Jazz and take their name from Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, the bluesmen.

Oneof the greatest pieces of Music ever recorded. And the Pompeii version you are listening to the full studio version is even better. Sonically.
The first concert I went to they played in a packed baseball stadium. I got 4th night tickets in the set of 5 shows. Oh and they all sold out in a few days. I came to comment on the intro thing. At this concert you could watch as they brought instruments and moved cords around setting up the stage. Then they started sound checks and that seemed to go on for hours,,,, all of a sudden you realized they were into a song. This was the Animals concert and I was a paralyzed viewer. Could not get out of my seat to pee. Seeing them live is sound, sight, and feel, set on holy sh^t mode.
This whole video is amazing.
Being a drummer, you should really check out the track Saucerful of Secrets from this same concert. Nick Mason just tears it up!!!
Since you've started at the beginning, the rest of the songs from this film are worth checking out. This movie is one of Floyd's best creations.
To be fair, song was sort of the turning point for them and their song writing where they really got their footing and led them towards Dark side of the moon. They all freely admit this. LFR brownie points just shot up with me. Unexpected to see you delve into such a classic and really feel it. PF is hands down my fav "classic rock" band. And sadly, their keyboard player passed in 2009. Roger waters (bass) left the band in the 80's and he was the primary lyricist after their original guitarist/singer/songwriter Syd Barret suffered some form of mental break in 68'ish. Its believed he took too much acid(LSD) and it caused a mental breakdown. He was then replaced by David Gilmour. After Roger Waters left the group they made 2 or 3 more albums without him during the late 80's. To the best of my knowledge, David Gilmour is the only one still performing, though under his own name, not the PF moniiker. In fact he played a show here in the Pompeii arena a few years back and it was epic. After watching this you should watch that.
Nick is still performing with his own band Saucer Full Of Secrets.

Pink Floyd ended their run in 1995 after the last studio album 'The division bell' in 1994... their last studio release was a record of mostly instrumental tracks (w/ 1 new song) in 2014 titled 'The endless river' (recorded in sessions in the early 90's w/ late keyboardist Richard Wright).
David Gilmour (vocals & guitar) released 2 studio albums as a solo artist - 'On an island' (2006) and 'Rattle that lock' (2015).
Roger Waters (vocals & bass) who quit Pink Floyd in 1984... sued the band for carrying on without him in 1986, did not release a solo record since 'Amused to death' (1992)... Waters has actively toured playing Pink Floyd music since, but did finally release another solo album 'Is this the life we really want?' (2017).
