For me, Pink Floyd often feels like nostalgia about a future you imagined as a kid but it never materialised. Or like longing for a past that never existed or that you never knew.

David Gilmour's guitar work has always been about emotion rather than flash.

Yes. David’s solos really aren’t that difficult to play but they never sound as good as him because of his tone and dynamics.

David Gilmour has a somewhat unique ability to use his guitar to create poetry. Instead of using written imagery to create emotion he uses a combination of composition and a very deft control of technique to accomplish the same thing. I think that is a very large part of why you don't have to know english to feel transported away in a story by Pink Floyd's music.

This song is a perfect example of what Pink Floyd music is great at. It doesn't tell you what to think. It opens your mind and allows you to feel what the musicians are feeling and thinking. It involves you in what's being performed and communicated.

I’ve been a guitarist for 37 years, and a fan of Pink Floyd and particularly David Gilmour for at least as long. If I had to pick a top 5 favourite guitarists of all time, depending on what day it is that list may change, but one thing that would remain constant is that David Gilmour would always be on that list. He is by far and without a doubt one of the most tasteful guitarists I have ever heard. His choice of notes, phrasing and emotional connection to the song is impeccable. Every solo is a song within the song. Breathtaking, like an enveloping warm hug from a long lost friend. He’s 78 now and still at the top of his game. Please also check out some of his recent recordings he has done with his daughter Romany on vocals.

This song was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett who was one of the founding members of the Floyd. He went clinically insane from habitual psychedelic drug use. They essentially lost their friend to drugs and they wished he was still sane. Syd died in 2007.

If you want to get the full Pink Floyd experience, read about the album background. In the case of Wish you Were Here - absence is a key theme (missing someone, original frontman Syd Barret who suffered a mental breakdown; and something, purpose in life after making it to the big time with Dark Side of the Moon album), as well as disillusionment with the music industry and how it uses musicians like Syd for profit without caring about them or their wellbeing. This is expressed on the album's artwork (businessman with the face absent, man diving into a lake with absence of splash or waves, businessmen shaking hands with one getting burned). Listen to the album all the way through, it's a single work of art exploring these themes in one long thread. Doing this you will get an emotional connection to the music in a way not possible listening to a single song from the album.

I love the intro to this. Imagine someone at home turns on the radio, there's a talk show on, they turn the tuning knob and there's a blast of classical, they tune again and there's a guitar tune they like so they pause on that channel. It's coming through a crappy radio speaker so it sounds tinny and far away but they like the tune and they pick up their own guitar and start playing along to it. And then they start singing about someone they miss and wish were still here.

Pink Floyd are a genre all of their own . People may have preconceived notion of what they are prior to delving into their catalogue but they stand alone from all other bands . The lyrics are all important to listen to , the melodies will transport you to other places and Dave Gilmours guitar will touch your soul . The rarest of bands who will genuinely play with your emotions and even question life . Their albums are not individual songs , each track continues the story of the album from one track to another . Stay with them , they will stay with you for life .

I started in the 90's listening to Pink Floyd, mostly their stuff from the mid to late 70's that everyone knows, but then in the early 2000's I started going back to the 60's and that sound is way different. Song's like Flaming, Julia Dream, Cirrus Minor have that more psychedelic feel but still the calmness this has. Then there are songs like The Gnome That feels straight out of Tolkien. Then they had songs like Bike, and Arnold Layne that are more fun, yet almost silly. It's all good mind you, but it gets even more diverse when you look at where they started.

What they always tapped into was just pure emotion, their songs speak to literally everyone. The magic I think is in the simplicity. You can’t exactly say he is a complicated or incredible singer or guitar player, but every note is still perfect and just right, warm like a blanket on a cold day. You can say say that about all of the instruments and band members, and the lyrics. Complexity through simplicity if that makes sense. This song in particular, is about “absence”, and musically there is absence in not having all this over the top instrumentation yet it is still sounds so warm, full, and emotional. I think you put it well when you said you can’t quite pick out what it is that makes their music so deep.

  • @scozz6139

The very beginning you hear a muffled sound of someone turning the dial of a AM radio, it's a call back to when the members of Pink Floyd were just teenagers and how they would listen to the radio to try to figure out the chords of their favorite songs.
"Wish You Were Here" is a nod to one of the 4 founding members of Pink Floyd in 1964, Syd Barrett. Barrett developed a serious drug problem, (LSD and other mind-altering drugs), and mental issues which led to his demise. By the end of 1967 Barrett could no longer perform or even function as a person, mentally he was gone.
By 1968 his good friend, and friend of the band, David Gilmour, took over for Syd in Pink Floyd, he's the one singing this song. At this time of Floyd's career there are only 3 actual members of the band, the others musicians and singers onstage here are PF's touring band at the time.
The 3 members of PF are David Gilmour, (lead vocals, guitar), Nick Mason, (founding PF member,... drums, percussion), and Rick Wright, (also a founding PF member,... keyboards vocals).

I grew up with Pink Floyd. People call us "Boomers". Younger generations say we're out of touch. I believe that quite a few of us are more aware of life than people give us credit for. Teaching the meaning of love is beyond what can be taught. But removing the blockage in ourselves that blocks the awareness of love's presence is our objective, which is also our natural inheritance.

This was the song that led me to guitar, his slides, the slight bends varying the hammer on’s sometimes sliding down to a pull off other times bending to the note the mixture and variance was mesmerizing to me so Id sit and repeat it over and over till I had to let my hands recover. Well years later I have grown in my playing and in my appreciation to this song and Davids artistry thanks for giving me the other non guitar analysis, and his vocalized harmony with guitar are/were extremely helpful in connecting my voice and instrument to my hands and mind so playing becomes very natural and spontaneous feeling.

This was the last track, I think, that David sang with the guitar. It was something he did in a few earlier tracks as well.
Another thing that might surprise you is that while the solos in this song follow the general form that was on the studio recording, they are (semi) improvised live. I think this provides a huge clue as to why his solos are always so lyrical and melodic - he’s literally making his guitar sing.

Pink Floyd is one of those bands of transformative music that's best experienced by listening to the whole album. They were one of the pioneers of the concept album in their genre of music. For this music, you do yourself a minor disservice by listening to it piecemeal with singles.
Listen to one of their albums all the way through.
You don't have to do a reaction of it. Just do it for yourself.

Even if transportative is not a word (no red underline so looks good!), it certainly conveys the right thing.

Please don’t apologize for getting emotional! Witnessing you having a visceral reaction to music we know and love is why we come here. If want heartless and less and cold I’d read a magazine article

Their music is ethereal. Magic. Mysterious and mythical. A genre unto themselves.

"Their music is so diverse"... yes! Pink Floyd is my favorite. Their sound has changed in different and interesting ways. Also, they had innovative ideas. For example, the song Us and Them (on Dark Side of the Moon) had echoing, at a time when there were no echoing electronics. Roger Waters recorded his voice with timed precision, and they laid that voice track down multiple times to achieve the echo effect.

Long time Floyd lover. Never did get around to hearing Pulse or ADSOT. But that scat-solo singing is schweet.

String instruments often sing, cry, and soar just as much as the human voice. :)

This is a concept album, like the wall and dark side. It's like a play or a movie told through song. It's best to listen to the entire album with headphones, undisturbed. If one song moves you, the whole album will change how you see the world.

When looking at a guitar that is being held in the playing position, the string on top is (almost always) the lowest pitch and the string on the bottom is the highest pitch. The first guitar that comes in is a 12 string guitar. The four lowest pitched strings have another string right next to them that are tuned an octave higher. The last two high pitched strings also have accompanying strings that are tuned to the same pitch. Since it is nearly impossible to get all the strings tuned exactly, the 12 string guitar provides a very lush and full sound - filling in a lot more frequencies than a typical 6 string. It's kind of like playing 2 guitars at once with the second guitar playing an octave higher.
The sound from an acoustic guitar is very dependent on the wood that is used and how it is made. Even two guitars of the same model from the same company using the same wood can sound a bit different. So, when David starts playing chords on his six string, along with the 12 string, it is an amazing sound for him to layer his vocals over.
I imagine it as the guitars are making the softest, most luxurious bed you could imagine and David's vocals are the refreshingly cool, silk sheets sliding over the top.

A quote from Dave Mustaine, "David Gilmour can do more with one note than most other guitar players can do with the whole fretboard". Enough said.
