PS5 has more impressive graphics and a few exclusive titles. Steamdeck has Linux, multiple compatible game/app stores, fantastic emulation, portability, undocked mode, desktop mode, a company which still often cares about ethics, the ability to run almost every game ever made, and an OS which empowers the user and respects their rights instead of a locked down proprietary OS designed to restrict the user. I know which one I'd pick... and it's not the one with better graphics.

If you have a gaming PC to accompany it then the graphics issue goes out the window too since in home streaming has gotten so much better over time.

The deck is basically a handheld PC. That alone makes it so much better than the ps5. Less restriction, bigger library of games, free multiplayer and you can emulate tons of games. I can also use my deck as a pc. Hook a keyboard and mouse, I can use it for productive purposes. I ran Autocad 2023, Inventor fusion, fusion 360 and even blender on it. Plus, it's portable. I can play my games natively while laying in my bed. I don't need an overpriced accessory just to stream games for that portability.
The ps5 exclusives hardly even matter for me anymore. Steam is far more consumer friendly than PSN and Sony.

Not to mention, Steam has such a massive backlog of games spanning multiple geenrations, whereas companies like Nintendo are busy suing everyone in sight without offering a solution to play their own back catalog of games offline. Gaming in 2024 is about playing games the way you want to play them.
I spent decades tied to my desk playing PC games and I never minded or resented it. But now that I'm older, I don't like to sit at my desk so much; I want to sit on my couch in my living room or in my bed next to my wife. I have a powerful gaming PC, but I'd rather play Cyberpunk on Low at 30FPS on my Deck than 165Fps Ultra on my desktop, because it's just nicer to be able to sit and play wherever I want, not to mention suspend whenever necessary if my kids need me or whatever.

For some people, raw performance is the only measure of what makes a system "better".
I think the Steam Deck, and the entire history of gaming consoles since the 80s proves that theory wrong.
NES beat the Master System in spite of the Master System being able to display way more colors. Gameboy beat the Game Gear in spite of the Game Gear being more powerful with a color LCD display. PS2 beat the XBox and Gamecube in spite of it being the weakest of the three systems. The NIntendo Switch has massively outsold the PS4 and the Xbox One in spite of it being much much weaker than those two systems.
Of course the Steam Deck hasn't sold nearly as much as the Switch, but Valve is still working on establishing their hardware manufacturing and supply channels. They're only just now getting them to Australia. They still don't cover Latin America. Brazil is clamoring for the Deck. However Steam overall as a gaming platform has monthly active users roughly equivalent to Playstation, XBox, and Nintendo combined. It's only going to get bigger and better. They're already talking about the Steam Deck 2, and they seem to be using the same design philosophy as they did with the first one. Efficiency is more important than raw power. Higher resolution displays aren't needed in such a small screen. Just a carefully balanced system, rather than "bigger number better".

The PC has always been the exception of the raw performance issue. Because always my friends would get that new console, and be on their computer all day regardless. The steamdeck is right there in between and it makes me care so much less about that power because it's just so interesting.

Ok. Nes beat the master system because Nintendo had the developers on lock, along with many retailers. Nintendo said, you can't make games for us, and then make that same game for our competition, if you do so then you can't sell games on our system. I know that sounds odd, but back then, that would be the death of many Japanese developers since Nintendo had most of their home market on lockdown. Also, Nintendo told retailers in other markets, if they want to sell the Nes, then they can't sell Sega master systems.
Nintendo played real dirty back in the days.

Something no one ever mentions - No monthly fees. On PlayStation or Xbox you basically NEED to pay a fee every month or year to use that console online for the internet you already pay for. I personally ditched my Xbox Series X for a Steam Deck, because I can play all the same games, it's portable, and I don't have to pay a monthly fee to Valve to use my Steam Deck online. Well said. My Steam Deck is my PS5 and Xbox. There are just so many great games from both Sony and Microsoft that play great on the Steam Deck. I have the official Steam Deck dock. I did have an issue of the picture not adjusting to my TV at first but it looks like Valve fixed that with an update. I am glad you mentioned value because some TH-camrs act like we all have an unlimited budget to spend on gaming devices. I think the LCD Steam Deck is the best value in gaming. My partner can't even recognize the difference between 1080p and 4k on our TV, so plugging in the Deck and playing at an upscaled 720 is fine for them, and for me, playing it handheld at an extremely stable, locked framerate is also totally acceptable. If I want high resolution and high framerate...well, that's why I have a desktop. But the "totally good enough at just about everything" nature of the Deck means that it's been a huge hit in our house. Maybe soon partner will get their own so I can have mine back, haha.

Yeah, the battery situation is definitely not ideal. It's not bad, but if you leave it plugged in all the time it'll try to keep the battery full and cause damage. It should reduce the charge range it uses, to make the battery last longer in terms of years. Like, a Switch can stay plugged in all the time and still work fine years later, but that'll kill a Steamdeck. So I hope they'll fix that.

I’m also a console gamer, primarily PlayStation consoles, and while I love PlayStation, I can see myself switching to more of a pc/steam deck person for two main reasons. 1, Sony is starting to bring all their exclusives over to pc and 2, if the ps5 pro price is an indication of the ps6 price in a few years, I’d rather spend that money on the next steam deck and/or minor upgrades for my windows pc.

I bought the steam deck because I really wanted a handheld device, back when I use to play on my PSP, playing a lot of Lego Star Wars. I love its portabillity, and I was playing Mario Kart Wii on a 2 hour flight, and I nearly lost track of time, and still had like 60% battery left. I for sure, and definitely do not regret my decision, what so ever! By all means, do try to go for the OLED version, you will thank me later!

I used to own a Steam Deck, and while I liked it, I found it too heavy for a portable device. It's not that I can't handle heavy things I'm fine with that but for something meant to be portable, it just felt too bulky. I much prefer using my Switch. It's lightweight, and there’s no shortage of great games that work seamlessly without any need for tweaking.

I really hope I'll be able to afford one soon, preferably the OLED model for a little more future-proofing - it seems too good to be true honestly.
my PS4 is struggling heavily (sounds like a jet engine and controllers are broken), so that's not an option anymore, my switch lite seems like a wasted purchase because games are still expensive as heck for some reason (thank you for that, nintendo - releasing old games for prices that are even more expensive than their price 10-20 years ago) and the sticks got *huuge* issues which makes it unplayable as well at this point.
I *do* already have a big steam library from 'back in the days' though.
from Counter Strike to GTA IV, Resident Evil, Terraria, Red Faction, cod, need for speed, dead space, command and conquer - so many classic and timeless titles - basically a little bit of everything. not to mention the constant extreme sales steam has going on - rivaled by none.
I could even play 'PS4 stranded games' like Elden Ring again because my laptop can't handle such games anymore, although I'd probably have to start over (but thats something I'm willing to do if it allows me to play the game again - also with no extra cost for the actual fun endgame after all the grinding, which is the multiplayer. why do they all charge for online now? it's ridiculous)
but we can all see how the Steam Deck masterfully handles all of those issues, you don't feel 'excluded' at all anymore because you have access to basically everything of relevance - from addictive indie games, pretty much all Emulation and to Triple A titles. no accessibility issues whatsoever.
you can even literally set up gyro aiming for basically any game, creating almost a perfect 'console-like rival' in terms of control schemes compared to mouse and keyboard in FPS games (and you can also of course always just plug in mouse and keyboard anyways)
just amazing. Valve at it again, saving us when all of the others in the gaming industry seems to let us down, constant overpriced nostalgia baits and so on.
I don't have to pay anything for nostalgia on steam (deck) though. it's already there. it generally feels surreal looking at my steam profile which is over 16 years old at this point.
Valve might be going full circle with their hardware from this point on in the gaming industry.

Steamdeck can run emulators and fitgirl/dodi repacks if you're into that so its better bang for your buck. Mods are difficult to run though sometimes because of linux, ps5 cant even run mods. Only thing that makes ps5 better is it can run 1440p at 60 fps while steam deck runs 1080p at 40-50fps. Most games get ported to steam eventually. Also ps5 is twice the price of a steam deck.

It is a cheaper option, both for games and hardware. However, I think a lot of its value comes from the community-mods, shells, game support outside of Steam (like ProtonDB), playtesting, finding solutions to problems, creating control scheme templates, etc. All of this is possible because the Steam Deck is far more open than any other console. The PS5 is a fine console, but only the Deck lets you do whatever you want with it: dual-boot Windows, switch to desktop Linux mode, and use it as a gaming console afterward

    • @adinwalls

To be honest, I had aspirations to do all that stuff but I have very much been a consumer of the Deck and not a reviewer. I haven't modded anything. I set up emulation but haven't touched it. Cons: compromised gaming experience. If you are used to graphic fidelity and optimization on console, steam deck ain't for you.

I also own an xreal, doesn't have hdr, 200inch of 1080p with edge cropped, no support to run steam big show.... don't get me started,
There are so many new unreal engine games that is totally unplayable on steam deck, where im from, I can get refurbished Xbox series s for 180$, it can play latest gen games, acquiring games via subscription is cheap, give it a try.

Another thing that throws me slightly off, just like the desktop version, is every time I load Steam up, it's gotta do like 20 updates for all the games I got. Like, man. I just updated that game yesterday and it needs another update today??
I know it's not even in the same league, but I find myself grabbing the Anbernic RG35XX-H more often for some quick gaming sessions. I prefer retro games over current gen stuff, and there's no updates needed to sit through before playing my games. Plus it fits better in the pocket to carry around. I don't walk around with a backpack like some nerds do. I like to be as minimalist as possible when venturing out of my dark and frigid dungeon.

If I could only choose one, I'd choose the ps5. Playing on a 4k OLED screen is just a much better experience. The epicness of Final Fantasy XVI for example is something that MUST be experienced on a large screen. I do live alone so that means the TV is always available to me.
The steam deck is great too, I like it for indie games and emulation. Or games that look weird, like they are not designed for a larger TV size(most jRPGs or visual-novel type games). I can also remote play from the ps5, so having both is probably best.

Ever since I got my Steam Deck, i've been saying it's what consoles should be as far the experience they provide.

I guess something I never touched on here is the fact that the Switch is doing alot of what the Steamdeck is doing in terms of being a console and a handheld.

The steam decks ergonomics are amazing. Ive always hated asymmetrical joysticks. I really hope valve doesn't change the layout with the sticks and buttons at the top

The cool thing about the steam deck (or a PC) is that if you get a new device that is x86 you will still get to play your games vs PlayStation. Like for instance ps3 games are not playable on ps4/5 unless they ported it to the newer systems. But your games from that same time frame that are for a PC will play on a steamdeck. Also, if you are into online games, you don't have to pay for online play on a steamdeck/PC (the caveat is that a lot of online games aren't compatible with steamdeck because of anticheat.) Lastly, there are 3rd party stores like humble, greenman gaming and others that sell steam games (as well as gog and others that sell non-steam games) so you are not locked into one game store like on the PS. The PS5 has a lot of pros too though.

I just tried the Viture XR Pro on my Steam Deck, it's awesome though I couldn't justify the cost so I think I will return it. But that Micro OLED was so beautiful that I am even thinking about trading my Steam Deck LCD with the OLED Steam Deck, but Value ha Deck 2 coming, I will just wait. I recently moved to X1 as my main PC and gaming machine, it's Windows 11, sucks in hibernation, but I get to play LoL and Fortnite. However, once I tried the Viture XR Pro on my Deck, I just can't stop going back to my Deck again. The Deck's ergonomics and sleep mode are just unbeatable.

I wouldn't hold my breathe for Deck 2, Valve are professionals at taking their time! But I understand the cost issue with the glasses.

I use the Steameck a lot more than my PS5, but I never use it docked. The graphics get really bad on a big screen, but it’s the only handheld you need. Now I just hope Steam will make Steam PC.

Umm, I think your camera has a focus issue. It seems to get out of focus for a short while a lot.
    Apart from that, great video!

Personally I never found the Steam Deck being particularly relevant as a TV-console. Because ultimately it's a companion device to a gaming desktop... People often hate PCs for being expensive, but you can literally get old i7 office PCs for around 100$, add an RX6600 (200$) and you will get a far superior TV-experience compared to going the route with docks and stuff (which still cost money)

While true, it comes at a cost of convenience and increased power consumption which isn't an issue to me but something many seriously consider. I have an old i7-4790 I use on my living room tv but still end up docking my Deck pretty frequently. One of my favorite features is the ability to remote play my PlayStation in any room without having to move stuff around
It has its place but you are not wrong.

I like the steamdeck but I won’t replace my PS5 with it because I love the PS library otherwise I am using the Odin 2. If the steamdeck goes on sale I would consider.

My Steam deck has been the main gaming device since i bought it and i feel that the main reason is the ease of use and the sleep and resume are bangers for busy adults.
Very complete device and if the OLED is better should be a no brainer for people looking for a gaming device.

For me steamdeck is a handheld I always dreamt about. Ergonomic, optimalization, beautiful oled screen and on the top of this - console-like experience on the portable linux computer. Steam OS is such a treat. Plus all community around it. i personally have steam app on my phone and all the shopping and adding to wishlist - Im using my phone for that. Give it a try. Chears

I’m a 44 year old husband and father of an 8 year old. Trying to convince my wife (“but you have a first generation switch and it’s still working!”) that a steamdeck is a good purchase has been quite the battle.
