I was gifted a steam deck by a good friend of mine and I was glad because it is the perfect handheld for my personal gaming needs.
The Steam community alone is worth the cost of getting the Deck because they have helped me run any and every title I threw at it.

As a steam deck owner with a visual impairment, I’m actually on the opposite side of things. The magnifier that the steam deck provides is not enough for many people’s needs. There is no speech output whatsoever, especially not built-in, and not in gaming mode at all. If you need any kind of assistive technology, I would highly recommend going with a Windows based device. I think that valve could fix a lot of this by switching from KDE to gnome, and porting over the accessibility features from the gnome project into the game mode itself, especially since the games themselves have accessibility features, but until they do that… I’m going to have to say that it’s best to stick with windows if you need any kind of assistive technology use. We also need a high contrast theme, some of the items being grey on grey or are too small make vital info hard to read.

Sold my Deck LCD for the Ally when it launched and it is a great bit of kit. It's the best windows handheld by a margin. But wanted the Deck back in my collection mainly for collector's purposes, ended up picking up an OLED 1TB Deck refurbished and it's pretty blissful to use. I do miss Game Pass on the device but I've been loving it these past few months - a much better bit of kit than the LCD OG model in so many ways, just feels much more refined. Still love my Ally but find myself grabbing the Deck instead because it just works.
Rumours of a Steam console have me seeing a future where the Deck + Steam Console provide my main gaming setup.

I have both the steam deck OLED and rog ally z1 extreme. Because of its' incredible portability made possible through its' best-in handheld gaming battery life and ease of use through steam os, the steam deck allows for even more ease of using a gaming device and playing games compared to consoles. Not having to be tied to one location in your residence (and for the steam deck specifically - near an electrical outlet worried about battery life) is a reason on its' own. Picking up and starting a gaming session and putting it down to do other tasks then picking it back up to resume gaming is easier because of steamos being the superior ui for handhelds. Because of these factors, it's extraordinarily useful for gamers that travel and need a distraction for a few hours at a time. The rog ally I use as a windows device since it's my only windows device. It's also a desktop replacement gaming PC because it has an XG Mobile RTX 4090 egpu attached to it. That said I still use my steam deck to game when I don't need all the extra power and want the conveniences mentioned above. Sadly my PS5 collects sits most of the time being unused, except for the times where I play exclusives.

You're right, the community behind the Steam Deck is a big plus. I've done a lot of things with the Deck and Linux now. I was a total noob and would've been completely stumped if not for all the people helping and creating guides. I think, short of windows anti cheat games, there is nothing the Steam Deck can not run. It impressed me time and time again. To be honest, I thought about "upgrading" to an Ally X, but after getting used to all the inputs the Steam Deck has (four back buttons, the trackpads, all programable via steam input), I no longer see the other options on the market as an upgrade. The Steam Deck is still amazing.

    *Steam* *Deck* *vs.* *Switch* *2*
It’s PC vs. console. Do you prefer openness and versatility or better optimization and efficiency? I believe the Switch 2 will be slightly more powerful than the Steam Deck. Where Steam Deck will continue to beat Switch 2 is higher usage if you’re a more hardcore gamer and don’t plan to buy the same games again from 5-7 years ago.
Switch 2 will get all the Nintendo exclusives while Steam Deck will always win in retro gaming thanks to the more openness approach to emulation. It’s Nintendo acting like Lars Ulrich from Metallica against Napster (piracy/emulation) back in 2000. You will beat whatever flagship/tent pole title Nintendo releases every year, and then after you finish them, you’re playing more third-party games and older Nintendo games on a Steam Deck or other PC handheld.
One of my favorites for emulation on the Steam Deck is for the Wii because the touchpad acts perfectly as a Wiimote/pointer. This was harder to do on an Android smartphone. I’m reading that Red Dead Redemption 2 is going to be a launch day title for the Switch 2. We could already play this game on the Steam Deck from 3 years ago! There’s no excitement playing a 7-year-old game on the go when PC handhelds already did this in 2022.
Don’t get me wrong, Switch 2 will probably sell another 100M units. Maybe. It’s no guarantee as the Wii sold over 100M only for the Wii U to sell less than 14M. DS sold over 150M units while 3DS sold half that. Super NES, N64, GameCube, and Wii U all sold less than the NES, Wii, and Switch. Gaming tastes can be kinda fickle every generation. Sometimes more people are into PC/PlayStation, sometimes Nintendo.
I will eventually get the Switch 2 Lite or whatever is the smallest, lightest, and cheapest model as possible as I’m not a fan of the Joy-Cons or the lack of a real d-pad from the regular/OLED Switch. But I’m aware that I will probably still play games more on my Deck thanks to emulation and cheaper prices for those older AAA titles from the PS4/Xbone era. Switch 2 will mostly be used for Nintendo exclusives like it’s always been for every Nintendo console/handheld since the N64/GCN.
Nintendo always ends up cornering themselves by always playing catch up with their third-party titles thanks to their underpowered hardware. They will have third-party titles from the previous gen like Red Dead 2 and FF7 Remake. Then once Valve releases a more powerful Deck in 2-3 years, more recent AAA titles will not be possible on the Switch 2 anymore. The PC cycle moves faster that it’s only a matter of time when the Deck 1 and Switch 2 starts to feel dated.
Did you notice after the Nintendo buzz was gone, nobody says Breath of the Wild is the GOAT game anymore? I saw a ranking for 8th gen games and BOTW didn’t even make the top 5. And remember how much praise Super Mario 64 got in 1996? Or how about Ocarina of Time in 1998? Now you won’t find them in most people’s top 10 greatest. A lot of early hype and then it fizzles out only remembered by childhood nostalgia.
I remember being so excited getting a launch day Wii. After the novelty wore off, I saw the motion controls only as a gimmick. The Power Glove done right. But my Wii collected dust after playing Wii Sports and beating Twilight Princess. If I could go back, I would gladly trade a Wii for an early PS3 phat. The irony is I needed a Steam Deck to emulate retro games to appreciate the Wii’s library.
With the Switch 2 being more of the same as the Switch 1, I wonder if it will capture the same buzz and imagination as the OG did in 2017? In 2017, we didn’t have that many retro handhelds and PC handhelds. It was a different time. Our smartphones weren’t perfectly emulating Dreamcast and PSP yet. And it’s not like Nintendo shoots for photorealism and they don’t overspend on their budget. They prefer the cartoony design which can age better while having a reasonable budget.
So isn’t the Switch 2’s power not being fully utilized? It would be like if Sony decided to go for the cartoony, low polygon look with their PS5 games when the hardware they only need to achieve that can go as far back as the PS2 or PS3. What’s the point of all that raw power when Nintendo won’t use it because they don’t want to spend too much and prefer the kiddie look to appeal to kiddies?
I feel Switch 2 is catered more for gamers who missed out on the *third-party* AAA titles from the previous gen. It’s Nintendo’s own portable PS4/Xbone. It’s their Steam Deck but released 3 years later. Gee, a Switch 2 can play a 7-year-old game (Red Dead 2) and a 5-year-old game (FF7 Remake) and gamers are supposed to be excited by that while they wait for the next Super Mario, Mario Kart, or Zelda game? And if priced at $400, it’s almost the same thing as buying the $400 Deck in 2022. Deck and Switch 2 are around the same in power but are on different life cycles.
Then when the Ally 2, Deck 2, and Sony’s PS5 handheld are released, Nintendo will continue to fall behind with the times as the Deck and Switch 2 are only as powerful as consoles released from 12 years ago. If the third installment of the FF Remake Trilogy gets released in 2028, Nintendo fans may get to play it until about 2033. If Switch 2 lasts about 8 years, that’s when the third FF7 remake game will be played on a Nintendo.
I will keep my third-party games with all the achievements on a Steam and PSN account. Nintendo is only good for indies and first-party exclusives. At least the Switch 2 will be smaller and slimmer than the Steam Deck. Not that the Deck is uncomfortable to play on. It’s actually one of the most comfortable handhelds I’ve ever owned. If it starts to feel heavy, I rest it on my leg while gaming in my car. But it is a bit too wide to carry all the time.
You can live without the other handheld and be totally fine. If you’re a casual gamer not into PC gaming/genres and love Nintendo IPs, owning only a Switch 2 will be fine. Better optimization, better battery life, and less buggy/crashes. If you’re a little more hardcore, not into Nintendo as much, and like to tinker, owning only a PC handheld will be fine. More versatility, better for emulation, more multimedia capabilities, cheaper games, better hardware, and cool mods for games.

    Shenmue (Deck)
I decided to 100% Shenmue instead of beating Like A Dragon first. I looked at the achievements and it looks pretty easy. It’s basically finishing the game. The most tedious one is having 50 unique gatchas and I already achieved it yesterday. After I 100% Shenmue, I will do the same for the sequel, my personal favorite of the series.
Since Shenmue I and II are merged on PC similar to Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, it would not be considered a 100% complete if I don’t finish the other game. I actually haven’t beaten the original Shenmue since I first beat it back in Dec 2001. It’s going to be 23+ years if I do. And yes, I remember that 70-man brawl. I can handle it better than most gamers.

    *100%* *Completed*
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade 🏆
I believe even after the Switch 2 comes out, I will still favor the Steam Deck. Switch 2 will have barely any games to play. And the ones that are coming out for it, you can already play them on your Deck. Plus, the emulation and multimedia capabilities is what adds more value to the Deck. The seasonal Steam sales can have you build your gaming library faster on a budget.
This isn’t to shit on the Switch 2. It’s going to sell out like crazy. I’m planning to get it. But if you already own a PC handheld, it’s really not that big of a deal if the horsepower is around the same ballpark as a Steam Deck and base PS4. And if Steam Deck is already considered a bit underpowered compared to a ROG Ally X and Legion Go, then what does that tell you about a $399 Switch 2?
    *Sega*
I believe Nintendo is better than Sega in both hardware and software but I think Sega caters more to my taste. If you have children, I can understand preferring Nintendo over Sega. Nintendo appeals to the widest audience possible. But Sega really speaks to me who doesn’t have kids. They cater to the hardcore gamers.
Look at all these Sega games I’m going to play on my Steam Deck these next few months….
    Shenmue
    Shenmue II
Shenmue III (I beat it twice but will plat it)
    Yakuza: Like a Dragon
    Sonic Superstars
    Sonic X Shadow Generations
I love that Sega style. They also have this underdog mentality since the Saturn/Dreamcast days I also really love. I miss prime Sega very much. I hope they reboot Shinobi III for us if they’re planning to do the same for their other classic titles like Jet Grind Radio and Golden Axe.
Planning to buy a Sega shirt on AliExpress. Sega rocks! Perhaps becoming my all-favorite game developer surpassing Square, Namco, Sony, Nintendo, and Capcom. Sega hits the right nerve for me. They still have that Japanese quirkiness of Nintendo but then Sega doesn’t care if their characters in Yakuza drop f bombs.
If Sega ever came out with a Game Gear 2 or Nomad 2, I would buy it a heartbeat. I miss owning Sega hardware. A cooler brand than Nintendo and a better game developer than Sony and Microsoft. SEGA!

Right at the start "while it is not the most powerful, nor is it logically the best because of that..."
NO. Stop it :'D We've got to stop these assumptions and bad logical leap right now.
I know, you immediately go in the opposite direction and that's the goal of the video, but in general, this is the stupidest talk point in any gaming platform discussion! Best and most powerful have nothing in common. The most powerful PC is not the best gaming platform, it just isn't. There is way more to being the best than raw power. Ergonomics of controls, game library, ease of use of the OS, loading times, accessibility, price point, peripherals, power efficiency for handhelds etc.
The Steam Deck is the best in its category because it has: a good OS (thankfully going to be accessible for other handhelds) a good ratio for power / battery life, nowhere near a Switch, but still pretty good, a great build quality, a comfortable if improvable docking experience, and a (at least now) a pretty good price point. And in general it feels like a machine built to be played for years, as opposed to the competitors that from the ergonomics, to the general design, feel like first draft meant to be replaced by the more powerful version in a year or two.

I'll disagree. 1) You're not playing any game that requires anti-cheat. Destiny 2, ect. 2) You can't replace your desktop with a steam deck, but handhelds with a combination of oculink/thunderbolt can. My personal favorite is the ayaneo flip ds. Thunderbolt, Oculink, 120hz screen, better gpu, and an extremely useful 2nd screen for emulation or performance toggles. Expensive for sure, but once you realize you can ditch a desktop, that price doesn't look quite so bad. Steam is the best pc "console" experience with ok performance and a limited library due to Linux limitations.

I believe you can install the other Windows based launchers on the Steam Deck, but I've not because people have created streamlined applications to bypass those clunky launchers.
Junk Store was mentioned, and I have the next pre-release which allows me to install any of my Epic or Gog games in a few clicks without leaving the big picture front end.
As for the processor it has been shown to run more efficiently at low TDPs, something that is wanted in a handheld. I can get 8 hours in the right Indy games. My Legion Go struggles at 2-3 hours in the same games. So speed isn't everything.
Now for screen, you quote the 90hz, so you know you're talking about the OLED model.
The OLED is miles better visually than an of the other screens out there, though I do like the larger screen on my Legion Go sometimes.
Ask any Switch owner which version they prefer, I bet 9 out of 10 will say the Switch OLED.
Now for gaming support, a good chunk of competitive online games don't support Linux due to anti-cheat. But then what competitive FPS player would ever play on a handheld? Mouse & keyboard and a large screen is king there. Handhelds are for casual play.
Which brings me to ergonomics, the Steam Deck wins handily there, and I have six handhelds currently. Oh, look, I've not even mentioned trackpads yet 😉
After all that, depending on preference, you can install Linux on any of the Windows handhelds, and you can install Windows on the Steam Deck.
      Have a nice day.

I am willing to try the OLED and I hope it works better. But just because you hate windows doesn't make the other systems inferior. I liked the review and would like to thank your for the hard work. But please, don't say it takes hours of tinkering to make those work. That's simply not true. I also bought the legion go so I can honestly say, you are wrong about hours of tinkering. I know it will seem like a negative comment but it's not. I love steam deck and actually prefer Linux. I just don't want people misled with "hours of tinkering before you can play".
