I agree there is no way 4 cyl can be as durable as the 4.L V6 naturally aspirated engine. The 4L has a lot less stress on the engine making it more durable. Wish they had a simple V6 option available. I’d get it in a heartbeat over the 4 cyl. Plus the turbos do require premium fuel. So even the “fuel saving” doesn’t really make sense. Other than that I think it’s the best looking in the lineup. This look and the GX is my favourite
@@blueplanet1048they will be fine. Everyone has said this about every engine advancement ever. New ones won’t last because of higher compression ratios, yet they do, etc… Toyota seems to have general powertrain reliability down.

Honestly, as a 5th gen owner and a fan of the new land cruiser I didn't expect the 6th gen 4runner to have any real appeal to me. I gotta admit, if I was looking to upgrade I eould have to seriously consoder the 6th gen vs the land cruiser. Not sure thats a good thing for toyota that the two are so similar in size but the 4runner looks fantastic, the gas mileage is going to be sooo much better thsn the 5th gen, and the trail hunter package with the big inverter makes it a ready mad eoverlander from thr factory!
It kinda looks like a Nissan Xterra as for the engine options. I like it to you can have two options, poison oak, or poison ivy neither of them are very enjoyable, but don’t worry they won’t last a long time
Big issues I can see from an engineering and serviceability standpoint: 1. The hybrid powertrain battery not only takes away from rear cargo room substantially without a taller roof line than the last gen, but it drops the spare and the exhaust way down close to the ground. Not to mention, how does one comfortably put hundreds of lbs of gear and drawers on top of batteries - how can you even service it without fully ripping apart your rig? 2. The turbo adds complexity, this is much more of an issue than the hybrid part of the powertrain 3. Looks like at the first glance the fender flares are just cosmetic and the limitations that exist in wheel well arches are still there maybe even worse - for larger tires etc. These shocks are great eye candy but have zero adjustability, no idea if they’re rebuildable, and the springs they come with are clearly not setup for the weight of any light over lander even. Lift height is even lower than TRD pro 4. Brakes look tiny, no upgrade there from what I can see 5. There is less room in the back in every way - especially with sunroof 6. The way the back seats fold is like an LC200, it takes up a ton of space and isn’t nearly as flat as current gen. With a drawer system in back as an over lander, you are neutered in how you can use that 2nd floor as a loading space with the way they fold down 7. I’m sure that onboard air compressor is weak, and I’m even more sure the onboard hybrid 2400W power isn’t pure sine. The current inverters have such dirty power that you can’t even charge a battery backup with them - 400w or 2400w idk about actual power delivery on this thing. Let alone serviceability of it 8. EKDSS not being available is a huge suck 9. Full time AWD Torsen with center locker not being available except on street limited and platinum trims is a huge suck 10. For 8-9 you have to get a land cruiser for both, and neither the cruiser or the limited are setup for serious off road and overlanding. So you can’t have both factory lockers and disconnects and the full time awd and ekdss. I suspect that will be possible in an 85k trail hunter land cruiser trim. Sounds more like a Land Rover to me… Smaller issues: 1. Rear quarter glass wrapping up like that is an accident waiting to happen 2. Power rear door is a nice idea if you don’t mount anything to it and add weight 3. No silly Tacoma suspension seats since it is Japanese made instead of USA 4. 18” factory wheels are too big with too little sidewall and “H!!!” lol passenger car rated “all terrain” tires for the TRD pro - so we still have to change wheels out for 17s and redo the whole thing, so minimum 3k dropped right there 5. The engine sounds like a Camry - rattly and pissed 6. The window is raked so far back with such a high hoodlike that visibility is much more narrow vertically 7. No appreciable size improvement - in fact rear wheel arches intrude as much if not more inwards than before 8. No revision to panhard or multi link system in rear really, in fact bolt diameters look smaller, steel looks thinner, everything looks kinda the same but a little less beefy. I’m sure the metallurgy is better with stronger or more efficient steel and welds though 9. Towing more but with no transmission cooler still 10. No driver side grab handle…guys.. 11. Making a Tacoma refresh and form fitting 4Runner into it is a bit sad Benefits: 1. More efficient frame and body structure 2. Factory lighting, wiring, and at least basic sliders (not sure of durability construction or mounting), skids and suspension 3. Aforementioned oem stuff means holes pre drilled from factory and a larger oem catalogue to order from. The holes will make aftermarket easier - part of the work has been done already 4. Obviously the interior space is more creature comforted and tech upgraded in all ways 5. Power tailgate - I know I said could be a negative but largely a huge positive 6. An adaptive suspension option is cool on street trims, if like the Lexus using electronic adjustment instead of air - it actually is bulletproof 7. Looks and all, but tbh it is very similar to current gen 8. Much more power and torque - as long as your turbo works and battery isn’t dead / electrical system fried 9. Hard to find a whole lot of pros for me over 5th gen, I know it’s ground up new but it feels incremental…
I was originally dead set on getting another 5th gen before they aren’t available anymore however I’ll definitely be getting a 6th gen. I’d prefer a 6 cylinder engine but their turbo 4 isn’t bad. Great review.
It looks like they did a pretty good job with it. Ive got a 5th Gen and i do like what theyve done, for now. We'll have to wait and see if these 4cyl turbo engines are robust enough to be as bullet proof as the engines they are replacing (V6 and V8). If i were in the buying mood (and might be in the next 2 years), i think i'd just stretch it a bit and step up to a Land Cruiser...Ive lived the T4R life for the past 10yrs...my next vehicle would either be a new LC and throw some 33s on it or a T4R TRD Pro as my plan B.
At least, in video the hood looks disproportionately long to the rest of the body, and the windshield is too sloped compared to the Gen 5. I think they nailed the boxy style on the Land Cruiser more than the 4Runner.
They made the 4runner look bigger on the outside but tiny on the inside. The rear trunk space is a total let down. Just how they ruined the sequoia. At least the roll down rear window is still there
They're gonna be as base and watered down as the taco. And priced out of this world. SR5 will probably be 50k after dealers order them how they see fit. And seeing as how you can't order from Toyota, the dealers will add expensive packages to the SR5, Sport and TRD OR to put them mid 50s to 60.
love it. "The front seat is all the way back" as the rear seat legroom looks short. Moves front seat fwd 1 inch and then sits in driver's seat and doesn't fit LOL
@@makerdistrict I'm sure the specs will tell headroom with and without pano. In the new tundra there is a noticable difference in headroom. In the pano model in backseat my head only fits into a little cutout, kind of uncomfortable... In the non-pano I'm nowhere near the headliner, there is no 2" bump
Yeah that’s a known issue with Sequoia and Tundra. Saw TRD Jon (I believe it was him, I’ve watched so many videos now 😅) sit in the back seat of the 6th gen and his head was almost hitting the back of the sunroof. If it had the pano and that frame was extended closer to the trunk, that wouldn’t be an issue in the backseat.
@@makerdistrict you could be right, and I don't know how it is with other vehicles, only the third Gen Tundra, but the space that the pano takes up lowers the headroom significantly. I'm 6'3" so it probably effected me more, and that is only in the back seat.
What most have not mentioned is that the new 4Runner is no longer a mid-size truck it has the same wheelbase width and length as the big Land Cruiser 200, 250, 300, GX, LX. Its now a full-size monster truck!
I dig the new design. It's a throwback of sorts to the second gen 4Runner but takes some of the design cues from the new Tacoma. The Trailhunter and TRD Pro look good, but I'm sure the Limited version will look really slick as well.
The 4 runner has sold me now with the automatic lift gate. The only possible deal breaker is wheather it has parking sensors. However, you can get aftermarker sensors so may not be a big deal. This will likely be my next vehicle.
I'm sure most if not all models will get the parking sensors. My 22 Tundra SR5 has them, my brother's 20 TRD PRO Tundra doesn't have them, new gens have more safety tech standard
@@stevieray1828 Think so, I have been wondering about that. All honda passports come with them. The new fuel efficient engine, power lift gate, and parking sensors will make it hard to pass up.
Looks pretty cool. May end up with a Land Cruiser. Just seems like they couldn't decide on a consistent style. Lots of bulges, strange body lines and still no metal bumpers or decent rock rails on the TRD pro.
The new runner looks like a cross between a 4th gen and a 5th gen with the best of both taken from both. And its still made in Japan so that means superior quality. I'm gonna always keep my 5th gen but I think I'm gonna add the 6th gen to my list of things to buy in a few years
I’m honestly so glad Toyota is getting rid of the carbon fiber on TRD vehicles. Being that I live in Texas I wanted a TRD but really didn’t NEED it and since I was so turned off by the carbon fiber I went with the SR5 with black TRD package.
The limited looks good but the trd with those black fender flares looks cheap. I see that the second row leg room isn't as good as the 5th gen. I purchased the 2024 & glad I did. I'm not liking the 2.4 turbo. Goodbye reliability & longevity.
Sorta disappointing. Glad they used Tacoma chasis because the original 4Runner was essentially a pickup truck with a cap and back seats. But, looks too much like it shares common designs with all their other models. Don't like squinty headlights on a truck.
Thanks for the video. Can you explain why the premium gets full-time 4wd and what it gives up compared to the TRD PRO. Is full-time 4wd available for the TRD PRO as an option?
It would make more sense to compare the Trailhunter 4Runner vs the Trailhunter Tacoma. And the TRD Pro variants. The Trailhunter 4R has Old Man Emu shocks, and a desert air intake also.
It looks like the Pontiac Aztec designer is still working in the auto biz. There’s a little too much front and rear overhang for me and it would be nice if they brought back a solid front axle.
@TFL you said the Trailhunter is going to be one step below the TRD Pro trim level? Am I understanding that correctly? My top choices so far are the Chevy ZR2 or the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, so I’m trying to compare them the most, features, price, etc.
I wouldn't say below. I'd say comparable cost but different focus. TRD Pro = high speed off-road. Trailhunter = Overland type activities and crawl focused off-roading.
Missed Opportunity IMO .Toyota destroyed the land cruiser brand by making the 250 mechanically identical to the Tacoma and now failed to differentiate the 4runner in the slightest.

Not going to lie, i am super duper jealous right now. Sitting on a 2021 and now I want to trade it in.
It wasn’t that long ago a fully loaded King Ranch F-150 was $41,000
Yes and now that’s 4k below average price for new cars
It’s because people keep buying overpriced crap.
Half the cost of new cars is the tech. A new king ranch is hands free driving with heated/ventilated and massaging seats just to name a few
Thanks for the morning videos.
Glad you like them!

Can I get the 2.8L diesel engine?
I've always have an affinity for the 4Runner. If I wasn't a Jeep man through and through I would definitely buy the new 4Runner.
Looks good. Non TRD PRO looks better on this new Gen. Don't like the black fender flairs
It’s probably me but I can’t accept that the high output turbo and hybrid engines will be nearly as durable as the V6.
I think they can, but they need proper maintenance. There's plenty of examples of turbo cars going over 300k on the original turbo.
I got my TRD OR 4runner in 2018 brand new for $38k. Good luck if I can get that now
I hate how they put the buttons right below where the driver and passenger both rest their hands that will affect the drive train and could break the vehicle if pressed while driving.
I like this way better than I thought I would especially the short wheelbase
I have an FJ Cruiser, but I need the new 4Runner really bad. You guys are awesome.
Will they sell a lot or just a handful? The cost is going to have a high impact on this.
That Morse code cubby looks perfect for an emergency can of dip or nic pouches.
Soccer moms and IG overlander boys are gonna love this!
Wait till they see it will also come with a “widdle wadder" and woof wack📈💅
but but but, they need it! They've got to spend 70k cause they have to sometimes go on a gravel road to visit Grandma.
They love them stickers and shiny never scratched TRD skid plates.
Because no one has ever bought a jeep and only collects ducks and sits in parking lots😂😂
If they can afford it, why not.
@@mad-meh2719 because it drives up the cost of vehicles for the rest of us
It has been a day and the new look is growing on me. I like it now.
All the nurses will be in line to get this 4 runner too
😂😂😂
Don’t forget, being a female nurse with 2+ deadbeat baby daddies is a requirement for financing on a 4Runner 😂😂😂
Waiting for my 1st gen Taco to die before buying something new.... currently at 316k miles. Wondering if these newer 4runners can go that distance?
I’ll take any of them. This entire line up looks great
It kinda looks like a Nissan Xterra as for the engine options. I like it to you can have two options, poison oak, or poison ivy neither of them are very enjoyable, but don’t worry they won’t last a long time
Big issues I can see from an engineering and serviceability standpoint:
2. The turbo adds complexity, this is much more of an issue than the hybrid part of the powertrain
3. Lift height is even lower than TRD pro
4. Brakes look tiny, no upgrade there from what I can see
5. There is less room in the back in every way - especially with sunroof
6. The way the back seats fold is like an LC200, it takes up a ton of space and isn’t nearly as flat as current gen. With a drawer system in back as an over lander, you are neutered in how you can use that 2nd floor as a loading space with the way they fold down
7. I’m sure that onboard air compressor is weak, and I’m even more sure the onboard hybrid 2400W power isn’t pure sine. The current inverters have such dirty power that you can’t even charge a battery backup with them - 400w or 2400w idk about actual power delivery on this thing. Let alone serviceability of it
8. EKDSS not being available is a huge suck
9. Full time AWD Torsen with center locker not being available except on street limited and platinum trims is a huge suck
10. Sounds more like a Land Rover to me…
Smaller issues:
1. Rear quarter glass wrapping up like that is an accident waiting to happen
2. Power rear door is a nice idea if you don’t mount anything to it and add weight
3. No silly Tacoma suspension seats since it is Japanese made instead of USA
4. 18” factory wheels are too big with too little sidewall and “H!!!” lol passenger car rated “all terrain” tires for the TRD pro - so we still have to change wheels out for 17s and redo the whole thing, so minimum 3k dropped right there
5. The engine sounds like a Camry - rattly and pissed
6. The window is raked so far back with such a high hoodlike that visibility is much more narrow vertically
7. No appreciable size improvement - in fact rear wheel arches intrude as much if not more inwards than before
8. No revision to panhard or multi link system in rear really, in fact bolt diameters look smaller, steel looks thinner, everything looks kinda the same but a little less beefy. I’m sure the metallurgy is better with stronger or more efficient steel and welds though
9. Towing more but with no transmission cooler still
10. No driver side grab handle…guys..
11. Making a Tacoma refresh and form fitting 4Runner into it is a bit sad
Benefits:
1. More efficient frame and body structure
2. Factory lighting, wiring, and at least basic sliders (not sure of durability construction or mounting), skids and suspension
3. Aforementioned oem stuff means holes pre drilled from factory and a larger oem catalogue to order from. The holes will make aftermarket easier - part of the work has been done already
4. Obviously the interior space is more creature comforted and tech upgraded in all ways
5. Power tailgate - I know I said could be a negative but largely a huge positive
6. An adaptive suspension option is cool on street trims, if like the Lexus using electronic adjustment instead of air - it actually is bulletproof
7. Looks and all, but tbh it is very similar to current gen
8. Much more power and torque - as long as your turbo works and battery isn’t dead / electrical system fried
9. Hard to find a whole lot of pros for me over 5th gen, I know it’s ground up new but it feels incremental…
You bring up very good points but #5 in smaller issues had me dying 💀
@@pa5587 hahahaha 😂
I was originally dead set on getting another 5th gen before they aren’t available anymore however I’ll definitely be getting a 6th gen. I’d prefer a 6 cylinder engine but their turbo 4 isn’t bad. Great review.
Not reliable
@@oliverb5798 doesn’t matter…. the resale value will be so high that if it sucks you can just trade out and not lose your ass
Looks great! Worried about the turbo charged 4 and 6cyls vs v8s and v6s though.
At least, in video the hood looks disproportionately long to the rest of the body, and the windshield is too sloped compared to the Gen 5. I think they nailed the boxy style on the Land Cruiser more than the 4Runner.
Thank you Toyota for keeping all the physical buttons! Love the interior.
They made the 4runner look bigger on the outside but tiny on the inside. The rear trunk space is a total let down. Just how they ruined the sequoia. At least the roll down rear window is still there
I wanna see the SR5, Sport, and OR. The ones everyone will get
They're gonna be as base and watered down as the taco. And priced out of this world. SR5 will probably be 50k after dealers order them how they see fit.
And seeing as how you can't order from Toyota, the dealers will add expensive packages to the SR5, Sport and TRD OR to put them mid 50s to 60.
No mudflaps, roof rack or trd exhaust on Pro?
These are pre-production.
Need 4 Runner vs Sequoia detailed comparison.
Of course
The side profile is giving me 4th Gen vibes
love it. "The front seat is all the way back" as the rear seat legroom looks short. Moves front seat fwd 1 inch and then sits in driver's seat and doesn't fit LOL
It totally needs the pano. I think that would make for more headroom in the second row.
Pano roofs are really cool, but they do take up some headroom, also not as safe in an accident
Presently with the sunroof as is, there is no headroom in the second row. Pano would fix that.
Also pano is safer than a removable top 🤷🏻♀️
They great! I like them all.
What does Toyota have against front tow hooks for it's off road vehicles?
Did they fix the high floor height… for folks with longer upper torsos you always felt cramped or lacked headroom.
Man, this looks like such an awesome offroad vehicle to buy used in 15 years.
I’m thinking the T4R will be a little better in MPG’s since it’s part-time 4x4 rather than the LC250 full-time 4x4
Was thinking the same thing, 6” shorter will help as well but the front bumper exposes more tire vs the LC. That said, I’m buying the LC!
Let me guess it’ll be over 60,000 plus! 😆
I bet the 2024 one will last a lot longer
Fun video! So how do I decide between the Land Cruiser and the 4Runner?
Glad to hear the 4Runner is still being built in Japan gonna get the 27 4Runner TRd pro over the 27 TRd pro Tacoma
Good job guys ! thank you
With dealers already planning on markups the land cruiser would be a better choice for the money.
You could just wait or buy the current Gen that has discounts.
Are there any photos of the TRD Off-Road trim?
I seem to be in the minority of not liking the new design. To each his own!
In a big fan of the new Land Cruiser look!
The limited looks good but the trd with those black fender flares looks cheap. I see that the second row leg room isn't as good as the 5th gen. I purchased the 2024 & glad I did. I'm not liking the 2.4 turbo. Goodbye reliability & longevity.
The disk with the morse code on the 4Runner reads "Accessory Ready"
Sorta disappointing. Glad they used Tacoma chasis because the original 4Runner was essentially a pickup truck with a cap and back seats. But, looks too much like it shares common designs with all their other models. Don't like squinty headlights on a truck.
is the rear seat smaller?
Thanks for the video. Can you explain why the premium gets full-time 4wd and what it gives up compared to the TRD PRO.
Is full-time 4wd available for the TRD PRO as an option?
Not an option. One trim in each of 4Rnr and Taco have full time 4wd.
Roman, please, it’s TOY-ota not TAY-ota. Rant over. Thank you for the coverage!!!! You guys are great. Dave in Denver
Actually in Japanese it is
TO-YO-TA
It would make more sense to compare the Trailhunter 4Runner vs the Trailhunter Tacoma. And the TRD Pro variants. The Trailhunter 4R has Old Man Emu shocks, and a desert air intake also.
It looks like the Pontiac Aztec designer is still working in the auto biz. There’s a little too much front and rear overhang for me and it would be nice if they brought back a solid front axle.
I wish they would have added a front locker. The one thing I think they missed.
I like the trailhunter myself but do not like the snorkel, please let there be a delete option
snorkel = ultimate poser accessory.
@@MrXerxes gotcha, thank you, that helps a lot, overland is definitely what I’m more interested in.
Missed Opportunity IMO .Toyota destroyed the land cruiser brand by making the 250 mechanically identical to the Tacoma and now failed to differentiate the 4runner in the slightest.
I'd be scared to take those pretty new trucks up a real off road challenge, but they look sweet.
No hood struts. Something for the aftermarket manufacturers to work on.
GM/Ford needs to enter this space!
Since it’s basically a Tacoma SUV. How comfortable are the rear seats?
