The most important part of this video was the last part. You can tell ppl and show then all the evidence but they won't do the diet because they think it will be too hard or they won't enjoy the food or won't enjoy life anymore. But you will enjoy the food way more (once tastebuds gets used to it) and it's not hard at all. What's hard is the social aspect. Our whole society is built around bad food. Across the street from my local hospital is literally a bunch of fast food joints and I wonder how many ppl drive down the road and see that.
I was recently diagnosed with stage 3 ckd. My Dr had only told me my kidneys weren't functioning properly. My neurologist informed me that it was stage 3 CKD. I asked my Dr. for a referral to a dietician and his reaction was "why." He hasn't given me any numbers to do with this, I have no idea how much phosphorous sodium of potassium I'm supposed to take or what my daily caloric intake should be. His reaction was I could look up meals on the internet. At this point I don't know what to eat, so I'm not eating much. I'm depressed with his lack of concern, but I live in a smallish town where Dr.s who take my insurance. I feel like I'm up the creek without a paddle.
I know how you feel. Let me try to help 1.) Adopt a strictly whole food plant based (WFPB) diet. It might sound restrictive and difficult at first, but as the guy said in the video, theres so many benefits and changes made from this one shift it is an absolute must for taking charge of ur kidney as animal protein causes hyperfiltration and increases acid load on the kidneys 2.) Aim for around 2000 calories a day. Anywhere around that number should be fine also, as long as your eating wfpb. (lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes) 3.) Limit your sodium intake to under 1500mg per day. If you can limit it under 1200mg or even 1000mg, even better 4.) Do not worry about restricting phosphorus or potassium from your diet as long as they are from natural plant foods. (banana, dates, potatoes, etc). Restrict only from no animal sources and from processed plant sources. (dipotassium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, etc.) 5.) Look up plant based recipes on youtube and omit or limit ingredients like oil and sugar, substitiute whole grain carbs for white carbs whenever possible. Many good creators out there

I agree, though for a lot of people anectdotes like this (with descriptive detail) have a greater impact on motivation than scientific facts alone. 1 person is a small sample size but anectdotes are often effective ways to convey information to people. It's how the mind gets persuaded. :)
My experience so far: 13 years ago I was diagnosed as type II diab. I went low-carb/meat based and lost 100 pounds quickly--I was still overweight, but I felt GREAT. A year-and-a-half later I was diagnosed with CKD, stage 3 and told to keep losing weight. The more meat and processed foods I ate, the lower my kidney function became. I was hospitalized 9 years ago with 9% kidney function and a dialysis port was installed in my arm. I heard about "eating plants" (but I hated veggies other than starchy ones). I gave up most meat, cheese, eggs, dairy. My kidney function rose from 9% to 14%, then 17%, then 19%. Since then, each time I get bored with the plant based eating and decide I want to eat meat my kidney function declines, but I am still not on dialysis. I have finally decided to stop playing around with my health and am committed to eating plant-based, no meat/dairy/eggs/fish/cheese/oil. My kidney function is still holding between 14%-18% and I haven't had to start dialysis yet. Eating this way--even when it wasn't 100% has kept me off dialysis for almost a decade so far. I'm optimistic about how being 100% committed to plant-based, zero oil will positively affect my health.
Hi, Globally Plantbased! Usually, as disease progression becomes more advanced, it is more difficult to treat or reverse. It may not be possible to reverse stage 4 kidney disease, but trying a whole food, plant-based dietary approach is unlikely to do any harm, so it could be worth trying. I'm stage 3/a and can't eat plant protein or animal protein without digestrive issues. I think the plant protein concept is not the right answer for everyone acorss the board.
You're having issues with both sources of protein so it's not the food. That said, it is important to limit protein intake while in the more advanced stages of CKD. I watched another video in which a 5th stage, yes a 5th stage CKD patient was able to fully reverse his condition and the one main component of his regimen with keeping his protein intake to about 14 grams per day. That is admittedly counter-intuitive to the mainstream opinion but if it works, it is advisable to at least try it.
Hi, zelmoziggy! Several articles are cited in the video, and you can find them all by clicking the "Sources Cited" link here: nutritionfacts.org/video/plant-based-diet-for-treating-and-reversing-stage-3-kidney-disease/ One is a case report, so it only describes one patient. Some are reviews, so they draw from a many different sources in the medical literature. Clinical trials are expensive to conduct, especially over long periods of time. The four-year clinical trial with 82 patients with type-1 diabetes was likely as large as was practical. Cross-sectional studies are less expensive and resource intensive, which is probably why that study could include 418 participants, which is not that small. The study of peritoneal dialysis patients included a respectable 884 participants. Another study cited in the video included 18,586 person-years of follow-up. I hope that helps! -Christine Kestner, MS, CNS, LDN, MPH, NutritionFacts.org Health Support Volunteer

I had CkD and immediately went plant based after researching on the internet and it reversed same as this video.. that was 5 years ago and I remain 100% plant based and never going back. My doctors, including a nephrologist, didn’t want to hear it and gave no dietary recommendations.

What are the example of plant base diet
@@chetinicedelacruz4399 Essentially 100% vegan but also try to eliminate added oils, sugar, salt, and processed foods (too hard to do 100% though especially if I dine out). So my diet is mostly plants: vegetable, fruits, whole grains, beans, and nuts. I try to eat organic but also not always possible. I eat a lot of beans, salads, burritos, plant bowls, oatmeal with fruit and nuts, smoothies, peanut butter toast on organic whole wheat (kind of a cheat) or avocado, tomato, onion, hummus on whole wheat bagel, dark chocolate. i eat lots of arugula and peppers. I only add fresh lemon to my salads. Tofu scrambles with roasted potatoes and hot peppers. i also eat Purple Carrot meals a few times a week. Mushrooms, Seaweed, kimchi, sauerkraut, natto are all good. Eating variety is important. I supplement B12 and D. Dr Barnard, Dr Greger, Rip Esselstyn, Dr Campbell, Dr Ornish, Dr McDougall, Dr. Fuhrum are good sources for plant based nutrition.
Can you please give example .. thank you
Kindly help with the diet you eat now, so as to save my brother 😢
Dr. Greger - thank you for all the work that you do. I still marvel at how many research studies you study, investigate and present. It must be the power of plants! 💚
So wonderful and inspiring. Thank you so much
Thank you Dr Greger. Amazing presentation 👍
Everybody needs to hear this. Thank you Doc and staff 🥦❤
Thanks! It's just sad people wait until they're about to die to try a plant-based diet.
Some of them do not even know this way of eating though. It should be a Dr's responsibility to give patient's this diet plan.

My dad was diagnosed with CKD. This is extremely helpful.
Let me try to help
1.) Adopt a strictly whole food plant based (WFPB) diet. It might sound restrictive and difficult at first, but as the guy said in the video, theres so many benefits and changes made from this one shift it is an absolute must for taking charge of ur kidney as animal protein causes hyperfiltration and increases acid load on the kidneys
2.) Aim for around 2000 calories a day. Anywhere around that number should be fine also, as long as your eating wfpb. (lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes)
3.) Limit your sodium intake to under 1500mg per day. If you can limit it under 1200mg or even 1000mg, even better
4.) Do not worry about restricting phosphorus or potassium from your diet as long as they are from natural plant foods. (banana, dates, potatoes, etc). Restrict only from no animal sources and from processed plant sources. (dipotassium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, etc.)
5.) Look up plant based recipes on youtube and omit or limit ingredients like oil and sugar, substitiute whole grain carbs for white carbs whenever possible. Many good creators out there

I’m all for trying a plant based diet, but you’re basing this and making a video on ONE person? I would really have liked to seen more of the data from the studies you mention. You breezed right by it. I was hoping to get more facts here.
Here is the testimony about two other people that didn't go the plant based route.
My mother diagnosed with CKD 20% kidney function Stage 4 renal failure. Carnivore for 3 months eating only meat eggs, and butter increased kidney function to 70% Happily she has now been carnivore for just over a year now, and had labs done again yesterday 06/06/2023 her kidney function is now 86%

Any improvement in your gfr n creatinine after going to plant base again?

Whole wheat products give me problems, along with severe bloating
What about stage 4?
As long you are not dead yet, nothing is impossible with WFPB 😅
Hi, Globally Plantbased! Usually, as disease progression becomes more advanced, it is more difficult to treat or reverse. It may not be possible to reverse stage 4 kidney disease, but trying a whole food, plant-based dietary approach is unlikely to do any harm, so it could be worth trying. You can find everything on our site related to kidney disease here: nutritionfacts.org/topics/kidney-disease/ I hope that helps!

@@_carnivore_joe1520 when you have even 1 study to back that up people might listen, unfortunately for you that won’t happen as animal protein is awful for struggling kidneys, this is well documented
That's a fairly small sample size, isn't it?

What about comparing plant based and carnivore diets that have the exact same claims. That would be nice if someone can clear that up.
Totally agree with you. I think the people that reverse their CKD have acute kidney disease and not CKD which is harder to reverse. Acute means get rid of the culprit (high BP or diabetes by either plant based or carnivore). What about us that don't have either problem?
The oxolates in vegies hurt my kidneys. Kidney stones.

After stage 3 it cannot be reversed. You can however stabilise the stage you’re in with a low potassium, low protein and phosphorus diet:
Tend to agree with you. The people that reverse their disease have acute kidney disease and not CKD. They reversed their problem by getting rid of the culprit either high BP or diabetes by either going plant based or carnivore
