  • In this video, I give some advice and my experience with a broken leg. I am an athlete, so getting back to what I love quickly is important to me. This is a video that I would've liked to see when I first became injured. Enjoy! **STORY OF INCIDENT BELOW**
2 Months ago I was hit by a car while riding my bike home from school. I was driven via ambulance to UC Irvine Medical Center (California) and an "open reduction, internal fixation" surgery was performed. I sustained more injuries than just the broken leg, which I am making videos on. Please Like the video and Subscribe for more!

The hardest part ain’t even the broken leg, it’s the mental part...not being able to do anything & sleep good...really mess with your head...

Yes you are correct, this injury is really tough mentally but you can grow mentally strong from it too. It's all about staying on the positive side mentally, and having gratitude that you are able to have the advanced medical treatment that we have today. The #1 thing you have to do before physical therapy is let time pass. Once you can start being more active with physical therapy and starting to walk, sleeping gets easier and makes the situation much easier to handle.

Broke my tibia / fibula about 9 days ago. Thank you for this video. I got a rod put in my tibia & a small plate with screws on my fibula .. I am so happy to find people that are having a similar situation as me. I have cried quite a few times. My daughter is 2 & does not understand. I did a lot of yoga before this injury & that was something we did for bonding. It really is you vs. you. The greatest battle. I have begun writing gratitude journals to start my day. I am grateful to have very supportive people around me & I am praying that you who are reading this do as well. Peace , love , light & healing.

i hope you are doing much better now. i am on day 9 now. where you were when you wrote this. ....i have four kids and a 4 month old new baby. so this has been quite challenging to say the least. i am curious how your growth has been from 9 days to 3 months later?!

    • @Spiderinnerg
      @Spiderinnerg ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@samiiberner3277 first I am so sorry that this has happened to you. I completely innerstand how you feel. I pray you have alot of help during this time bc it it so important to rest.
The first month was rough as far as pain, discomfort staying on a well balanced pain killer schedule was a must. I was wrapped from my foot to my knee & I used my walker to get around when necessary. I had major swelling whenever I stood up, felt as though my leg was about to explode so I tried not to stand unless having to go to the bathroom. I had to consistently keep leg elevated. I had at home therapy which helped out a lot.
Two weeks later I got my splint & wrap taken off as well as the stitches & they x rayed me to check the growth & there was some callus formation but the break lines still clearly visible. They put me in a cast for 4 more weeks since my break was very close to my ankle bones. I began to use crutches which made things a lot easier for me as far as moving around. The swelling wasn't nearly as bad as the first month but it was still prominent. Surgeon recommended that I put my leg up for only 20 minutes at a time when it swelled up a lot from being down. Pain only occurred at this time after waking up from sleep. The cast made it easier for me to move around , made my leg feel overall lighter. I could barely bend my knee since it was wrapped for 2 weeks & the scar tissue from surgery but that got better around at around 6 weeks.
4 weeks later which was October 10th I had gotten my cast off , x rayed & it showed consistent growth but break lines still very visible. They put me in a walking boot & I was able to put 50% weight on it which was difficult at first due to discomfort & insecurity but I began outpatient physical therapy which helped me gain strength & ankle mobility & in about 2-3 weeks I was comfortably walking 50% with crutches & in the boot. I did physical therapy for a total 6 weeks twice a week. Swelling was very tolerable & no pain whatsoever, just discomfort at times while walking. I had gotten back to doing yoga, headstands included ( being very careful ofc lol ). Ankle mobility was very very limited.
December 14th I got x rayed & had continuous growth but break lines still very visible. I was able to completely get it taken off with 100 percent weight bearing. Still learning how to walk normal again , I walk with a limp. My ankle mobility is about 90-95% rn. The process of getting that mobility back is very long sadly from not using it for so long. The more you move it , strengthen it & walk without a boot the better it truly gets. I workout everyday now to strengthen my leg since I had gotten muscle atrophy from lack of use. My leg can hold up on squats now & even lunges with very little no discomfort.
It's a long process & because my break & surgery was major it will probably take up to a year for me to fully get back to normal , no limp , running , jumping but I feel amazing now.
Everything happens for a reason. This experience has given me a pain like nothing I've ever experienced & has made me stronger in the end. I feel stronger mentally & spiritually & now working on the physical part. It's not easy but you can & will get through it. You are not alone. There are so many people who have gone through & currently going through what you & I are going through right now.
Netflix was my very best friend & helped out a lot. Helped to keep my mind off of things. I wrote in my journal, did what I could with my daughter , played games , read to her , watched movies with her... when I was able to move around more I did just that , tried to not stay in bed too long as it can get depressing. As soon & you can move around more do that just don't push yourself too hard. Everyday is one step towards your overall healing, try to keep yourself in high energy as much as you can & before you know it you'll be up & moving around without a problem back to doing what you love.
Sending you so much peace , love & praying for your overall healing throughout your journey. God gives its toughest battles to its strongest SOULdiers. You got this mama.

But I'm almost to my year date and I'm happy to say I can walk 12 to 15 miles a day now. I work at a highschool and its a big school. This was a very learning journey for me. Only thing that hurts now is the screws. Thinking of maybe get them taken out. Best of luck to anyone suffering this injury. It will grow you in the end❤

So I am going on week 3 and if I can add anything for quicker healing it would be to rest as much as you can and listen to your body, you will have to push your body through some pain when it comes time to start bending all your joints again but dont over do it.
The showers are probably the hardest thing I had to do by myself. Everything does get easier and just remember it's only for a little bit of time and we heal.

I just got into a motorcycle accident and my leg hit a car which broke both my tibia and fibula, got an intramedullary nailing done, and I agree with the mental part, it was hard as hell. About four days ago, I bumped into your video and I was honestly depressed and miserable. And after watching your video, I got the motivation and the reassurance that I can definitely walk and do the sports I love again. The very next day I started to put some bodyweight onto my injured leg, slowly and gradually, I supported all my bodyweight on that leg. I started walking without crutches and pain, but some tightness. It was exactly three weeks and one day post surgery, I know I’m one of the lucky ones, probably the luckiest to do so, but still, thanks a lot man, it really is your video that got me walking again now.

I am so glad to hear that I helped you in such a big way. It really helps me a lot to feel that I am contributing to others lives in a time that they are in need of positivity. I remember one of the hardest thoughts to deal with when I had my injury was asking myself if I was going to be able to do the physical activities I loved, because that was where my happiness and livelihood came from. I would be filled with fear sometimes because I didn’t know if I would live free of pain in my leg in the future. A broken leg is an injury that really takes a long time to heal from, but it is definitely possible to heal %100 percent from, and I am living proof. In those moments laying down when it feels like life is at a standstill it is just so important to remember that you will make it back and heal up. As soon as you can start walking, everything changes for the better. I can say for sure that the first month is definitely the hardest. I am saving videos for him to watch when he gets low to help raise his spirits. Hope your recovery is going well! Is there anything you suggest getting to make his recovery more smoother? Thanks!

You’re so spot on about the mental aspect of how difficult all of it is. I broke my tibia and 3 toes a month ago dirt biking and it’s be so hard just not having the same mobility, using the bathroom normally, putting weight on one leg constantly, getting less sleep 😴 having to stay in bed for long periods of time to find energy throughout the day, it SUCKS! I can’t drive or get out like I want to which I need that to feel sane. Injuries like this are really tough. I give you all the credit in the world for getting through it and making a full recovery! I hope to be there soon in some months.

Same same. 44 YO, I broke both with a rod and a few extra pins for an ankle break as well. I’m 5 weeks in and I’m just starting to put weight on my ankle. Make sure you heal properly and heal at your own pace because we’re not all young, quick healers. I push myself as hard as the therapist will allow me and I’m far from being able to walk without the boot. I had imaging done at 4 weeks and neither the tibia or fibula was touching in the middle yet. My doctor just keeps saying weight bearing as tolerated… I wish she’d just say I was good to walk on it or just keep using crutches. Mentally I’m afraid I’ll push too far and re-injure the area. No more rambling, just wanted to tell my story for reference. Thanks and good luck to all that are seeking advice!

I only broke my leg yesterday, and I broke both my tibia and fibula, honestly I think mindset is important and I am trying to stay positive and not worry too much. I am fortunate that I am very young, only 14, so I most probably won’t even need surgery at all. Honestly everything happens for a reason and this will be a good experience for the future.

    • @evadeproductions4255
      @evadeproductions4255  3 ปีที่แล้ว

You will most likely recover using a cast. Since you are young, your body will build bone tissue fast, but since you do not have the support of surgery, it will take a little bit longer before you are able to walk. Walking in chest deep water in a pool will be good for your recovery. You must stress the bone to stimulate bone growth, but you can not apply too much weight since there is nothing supporting you except the newly formed bone callous.

At 10 weeks I am just about ready to drop one crutch. I've been doing the exercise bike since week 3. I also find there's some good on line physios giving tips on heel to toe action in restoring normal gait. All the best everyone :)

I’m 13 and I injured myself after landing hard after a hurdle I broke the top of my tibia and fractured my growth plate, the break went into my joint. This happened two weeks ago. I can’t walk until 2-3 month, and I won’t be able to run or do sports (soccer & track) until 4-6 month. I had surgery and they put three screws below my knee but no rod. So my whole summer’s ruined but thanks for the motivation, I’m gonna grind harder than I ever have when I can walk again

Thats a difficult one man since it was in the joint, although the medical support we have nowadays is incredible and i'm sure that you will heal relatively fast since you're only 13. That's also unfortunate that you injured yourself coming into summer, but as you said, you will come back with so much more motivation and gratitude. Hope everything goes well for you.

    • @evadeproductions4255

Thank you, I am blessed to have a fairly quick recovery. It sounds like you really got messed up! In addition to the bone breaking, you also had trauma to all the ligaments , muscles, and joints in that area! I bet it's swelling like crazy, but that is just your bodies' natural response to this severe injury. It does feel horrible in the beginning stages. You are still fairly young, though, and at least you only broke the fibula. During the time of filming this video, my fibula was still mostly broken - the rod they installed just stabilized the tibia. Either way, you will need some time to just rest and heal. Once you begin to feel better to put any weight on the leg, I highly recommend using a stationary bike trainer. It helps to keep the blood flowing, fight against muscle atrophy, begin to establish some range of motion in the joint, and it will increase your human growth hormone output, which will quicken healing. Ask your doctor before listening to what I tell you, though, as this is just the regime that has helped my healing. Good luck to you as well brother.

I broke my leg while on holiday both tibia and fibula spiral fractures had to have to titanium rods placed, both 10 cm long scars. Had to take a 14 hour long flight to get back home plus shorter plane which was not fun at all! My leg got super swollen and infected! So far 12 days in sleeping is the hardest since I have no cast and since my wound got infected I can’t even wear the boot so trying to keep my leg perfectly straight is a real challenge. Having a wheel chair, good set of crutches and an elevated leg pillow has really helped me so far!

I had the exact same break and same operation, did it surfing, hit the reef with my legs crossed and the rest is history. I'm week 7, riding 3x week for 45min, leg exercises daily (mobily and to re strength) and things are looking up. Knee still swells, screws in my ankle still hurt to walk but that's normal and will improve. Have started putting wieght on and walking without cruches but with a limp.
    Tips:
-First 3 weeks absolutely suck, no real cheats or tips to get through but stay positive, don't give in to bad thoughts remember your not special.... you WILL get better!
-Hit the gym, you have the perfect excuse to do strickly beach weights and upper body cardio :) , I'm probably fitter now than I have been in years.
-Go to a good physio! The surgeons are great but there job essentially stops at the two week mark where they ensure you dont have an infection, everything's aligned and healings stopped.
-IF you have the same operation as I did (orif- rod and screws) dont be afraid to start using your leg and strengthing it 3-4 post surgery (obviously consult with your phsyio first)
-Ensure you do your rehab and do it exactly as instructed
-Accept your situation, accept the recovery time, focus on new things and take it as a challenge. Pretty cool to one day tell people you broke your leg and had to learn to walk again
I'm a 23 yr old male btw, best of luck with your recoveries

Hay thanks for the video its really inspiring god bless you with speedy recovery. I broke my tibia and fibula on March 22nd 2019 in motorcycle accident. I was operated on 23rd with a plate and screws. My doctor says recovery will take longer as I have broke the bones into multiple pieces. Also I have soft tissue injury. During my last visit to doctor on 5th June x rays didn't show the much progress to me I still can see the gaps. However my doctor says it's healing and I can start partial weight bearing from 20th June which will be 90 days after surgery. I still have minute swelling and pain some times all the swelling and pain was gone between 8th to 10th week but it came back however it's tolerable and goes away after some time.
What is your condition now do you also had swelling in 3rd month? As I will start partial weight bearing after few days will it be painful?

Thats a beautiful fixation, props to your surgeon.
I was also lucky enough to have a brilliant fixation, and I'm walking 2 weeks post nail op (luckily my fibula wasnt broken so that helps stability a tonne). My tibia however was super displaced, nearly broke the skin and the bone was cleanly broken and completely misaligned at the fracture site.
My leg is still super skinny, mainly my calf, and it's only been 3 weeks since the break, I was hoping I wouldn't have too much atrophy but it happens so fast when you're immobile!Hope after all these years you aren't carrying any complications, I'm hoping I will make a full recovery smoothly too!

it was a clean break all the way through tho so the doctor is just being extra cautious.
and of course i also sprained my other ankle at the same time so even using crutches just to get into the house after leaving the hospital was a nightmare. my moms boyfriend is permanently in a wheelchair so ive been staying at their place while i recover its a blessing cuz everything is set up to be more wheelchair accessible but sleeping on a couch for 2 months thats not great

I'm sorry to hear that you're not able to walk on it yet! I also know that ankle sprains are very difficult, so that might have something to do with it. My surgeon said that since they stabilized the leg, I can bear as much weight as I can tolerate. I would advise to ask your doctor about getting on a stationary bike, because for me, it seemed to improve the speed of soft tissue healing, improve my mood, and improve my overall energy throughout the day. It is good to hear though that you are able to get around in a wheelchair.
