    Starting to “clean your room” can be extremely difficult when severely depressed. Finding motivation to make that first step is always the most difficult. A trick I call the “two minute rule’ that have I have used in the past few years (severe health and depression issues) that really helps for any unpleasant task such as cleaning dishes, or at tackling a neglected house/room is to tell yourself you will only do ...dishes for two minutes or clean out the junk drawer for two minutes .....the next thing you know you spent 30 minutes and the task is complete. You get on a roll and the next thing you know the whole room is clean.
    Give it a try for two minutes you will be surprised.

      I have ADHD ,had no motivation to clean plus when I was trying to I couldn't keep things in line. I'll had to take like 5 things from my living room to the kitchen and I would take them one by one because I wasn't noticing them . I did something simililar to the two minutes , I was saying that I'm going to clean two to three disses ,the less dirty ones and after I was done with them I was like 'I did that fast so I'm going to do another one' and then another one ,and another one .. The good thing with ADHD is that after you start something and you see that it's not that unpleasant you keep going without even understanding it ,you space out and the hyperactivity is doing the job.

    When I found out I had breast cancer 12 years ago, the first thing I did was pray; and the second thing I did was organize all my medical and health info in a ring binder with dividers. Being neat and tidy helped me keep a handle on everything. It was a very dark time and the anxiety was inescapable, but putting things in order helped me get through it. And something good came out of that dark time because I learned how dependent I am on God.

      He didn’t mean to literally clean your room. Born again believers understand this better than anyone. Your body is your room God is your host. It can get messy and attract bad host (demons) and lead down a dark path. Eh you’ll see soon I guess either you will continue to scoff to the end or you change now. The kingdom of heaven will move on regardless of your decision but not without a heavy heart.

      @e.s.7520 5 ปีที่แล้ว +232

      I've been there also; I truly understand.
      May I suggest to start by picking up one item, look at it and decide: do I truly need this (functionally or sentimentality) or should I give/throw away?
      Next, put those items in either the 'need' or 'give and throw away' boxes or piles...whatever you have handy; no perfection necessary. ;-)
      One by one, keep making a decision over an item in your room at least once a day regardless to how many days it takes; keeping make a choice about 1 item daily (or as many items as you can bare) because...you are slowly taking authority over and changing your situation. You'll visibly see that as your room improves.
      Just remember on those days you don't feel like doing anything that...one item at a time can equal a entire room over time...one day at a time.😉
      You CAN do this, Luis!☺

    • @mepommier
      @mepommier 5 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      I feel that. The first thing I usually start with is picking up one thing and putting it where it belongs. If starting is the hardest part, make it the easiest it can be. Usually, when I put one thing away, I want to put another away, sometimes more, sometimes less. Just make sure that every day, you do at least one thing, even if it's bringing a mug with you to the kitchen, or throwing away a wrapper off your desk. Even if you only do one thing, at least you can say you did something.

    I listened to this psychologist who encouraged me to write the word "valuable" on my bathroom mirror and that task in itself changed my inner dialogue gradually. I started to tell myself I'm valuable and worthy everyday and that turned into me cleaning my room, just automatically, because I thought since I'm valuable I have to treat my environment with value. I've always been messy, always had a trouble to keep my room clean, and now suddenly I keep my room clean all the time just because of that task. My next task is to try to listen to my inner voice better because I have a bad habit of numbing my uncomfortable feelings down with food. I watched the movie Spirited away and realised I gotta change. If I value myself I have to value my inner voice. Clean your inner dialogue 😀

I am not there yet, but I am trying, and I have people encouraging me. They are not doing it for me, but they are encouraging me. I am often ashamed if they turn up to look, but for example today my support worker turned up to look at the house. I said it's not up to par today and she said it's fine. It's still better than the first time she looked.

    I just spent a couple of months decluttering & reorganizing my *entire* house. I've never felt more in control or in a state of feeling satisfied with myself. It was a dreaded, monumental task, but once I got started, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. If you try it, just take one small area of the house at a time & don't push too hard. A little bit at a time.

    I love Dr. Peterson so much about his wisdom in his simplicity. I take his advice and then I suddenly need to go and clean myself. Take a shower, shave, brush my teeth and then come back feeling fresh and then tackle my room. Throw out the crap and neaten it up, it's not so difficult and leaves me feeling a whole better and enabled to tackle other tasks. Keeping myself feeling fresh and clean really helps to be able to tackle other tasks that may feel out of control sometimes.

    Cleaning my room or even the house always makes me feel so good especially when I feel something is off in my energy

  • @earthed_soul
    @earthed_soul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    I call this *Feng Shui for the Soul* ♥️✨
    It's all about the lost connection between our mental, emotional, spiritual, physical energy and we need to do nice things for our environment as part of our self care. One easy way is washing dishes (leave them to drip dry and then put away once they're dry. This saves tea-towels and is more hygienic). As you're washing the dishes just look at the kitchen worktops and give them a sponge over with some hot bubbly water, and the windowsill if you have one, then maybe move your momentum onto the cupboard fronts then maybe, if you feel okay sponging the kickboards below the floor cupboards. And that's a good little load of tasks done there to clean up the kitchen. If you feel like sweeping the floor do that. If you feel like mopping the floor too, the best solution is simply washing up liquid and hot water. Even if you only do one thing from this list... it's an achievement when you're depressed. Then just do this for each room of your home. The kitchen is a good place to start because it frees up and cleans up your space to be able to get food and drinks if your energies begin to recalibrate. Once you manage to get the kitchen done the bathroom is the next best place (the crucial rooms - one for digestive sustenance and the other for self-care pampering) and then after that the bedroom because this is also a place for pampering rest, relaxation and sleep, and you can also use this room as a lounge whilst you eventually start clearing and cleaning the actual lounge until you can use it comfortably again. These are the four basic and usually most used rooms in a home. You will feel better after doing the initial cleaning in the kitchen because the physical movement is shifting all of your energies (mental, emotional, spiritual, physical) and it may even physically and mentally hurt to some degree depending on the level of depression because it is shifting energies. If you have to go and sit, or lie, down just go and sit, or lie, down and try again when you feel up to it. It's not a failure. It was a success for rising to the challenge. Well done for trying. Awesome for trying. Each day, or even if you want to keep trying more than once a day, just keep trying. If you can't, it's because you're too depressed. Simple as that. Well done to all of you. Sending love in abundance and we all love you without measure because there's no reason for us not to 🤗♥️✨

      I was married to a hoarder. I survived by traveling a lot. Hotels. When Covid lockdowns hit I was trapped in the reality of his stuff and had to face the truth. My children and I all shared a bedroom in a 3 bedroom house because he had his stuff filling 2 rooms up. He made his bedroom in the garage that he ironically had cleaned up to keep neat and tidy. The basement and the laundry room he had full of stuff. He had the backyard even full of stuff. He made our lives hell. Now we are separated and peace has returned.

    This man is offering crucial life advice. Take it from someone whose done drugs and been down a few wrong paths, being truly organized and set, even in a material sense, is like a high all its own. I've been disorganized for as long as I could remember and everything was stressful. I lost things all the time, I had lingering anxiety because I was always afraid I'd lose something and never know until I needed it and then look for days in a panicked frenzy.
    Just the pure relief of knowing where my things are and being able to access them in a moment's notice has lifted an enormous weight off my shoulders. I put a massive stack of papers amongst my entire collection of files and knew I could find anything I wanted in that whole stack in less than a minute. It's a small example but just the feeling of knowing I could do that literally felt like a high.
    And I've been able to apply that to many areas of my life and it's slowly coming together bit by bit. Jordan Peterson makes a very important point though that it is *NOT* just about being clean and organized, it's about being able to identify chaos vs. order and then having the will-power to create order from chaos.
    Many people can only see the largest contrasts between order and chaos in their lives and all-too-often the contrast between the two is far to great for a person to sanely tackle and solve at once. Especially when you consider all the little bits of chaos that may call to their attention NOW, and all the little bits preventing them from ordering the BIG chaos in their life.
    Once you begin to correct all the small things, more things become clear that you must deal with, and you are more experienced in creating order from chaos. If you cannot understand all the SMALL things that create chaos in your life, you will *NEVER* be able to sort out the chaos plaguing humanity on a global scale.

    I don't remember where, but I saw something that said that the first thing you should do every morning when you wake up is to make your bed. It's a very easy little task that will start off your day productively, which will make you feel better about yourself. Then, if you don't manage to get anything else done for the rest of the day, at least you have a nice, made bed to climb into at night.
    I just thought it was an interesting, helpful idea and now I make a point to make my bed every morning. I have a very hard time establishing and maintaining a routine, but I've been able to do that consistently for a while now and it really helps me start the day feeling good about myself.

    This is the best piece of advice from Dr Peterson. It really can improve your mental state, aiming you in the direction you want to go, unsticking your life & helps to decide what’s important and what is not. Also, it can teach you planning, strategy, organisation, order, spatial awareness, budgeting, a taste level & common sense. Skills that translate elsewhere. The results save you time, money and are good for the environment too. Put on some music or a comedy show. Grab your 2 bin bags - one for trash & one for donate & get going.

It's much easier for me to get a lot done once I can finally get started. Sometimes I sit for 30 minutes (sometimes much longer) until I'm able to get out of the chair in the morning and start. Getting started is the hardest part for me. But I strongly believe in the power of accomplishing short term goals.
