We can derive sense of meaning with 8 things 1. An intimate relationship 2. Some family interaction 3. A friend or two 4. A job or a career 5. Engage in something creatively 6. Take care of yourself physically and mentally 7. Adopt some civic responsibility 8. Protect ourselves against major sources of hedonistic and impulsive temptations. See if you can work on a few of these things ~Jordan B Peterson.
When he says that if someone has all these things and is still depressed, it probably means they have a mental illness, I couldn’t disagree more. Humans have a need for a sense of meaning that goes far beyond these superficial things. It is likely that such a person longs for a much deeper sense of purpose. And in fact, if you have that, you don’t need any of those eight things at all to be fulfilled. Well, except for number eight, that is.
@@artugert I think you still need most of the other seven even if you have a sense of meaning. That would even help you make your choice on each front, the friends you make, the job you choose, and how well you behave and take care of yourself. Having someone to support that purpose (a spouse) wouldn't be bad either.
I get what you are saying about like what do you want me to say? Because communication has so many non verbals. And you know that if you have told her she is beautiful before and reassure her that you love her way beyond that now anyway so that a horrific accident couldn't have changed your love and feeling for her. If you have said this already previously and she knows you as a man of your words. Then maybe it should not be needed everytime you go out. Because this is what I am picturing. Just as an apology if I have to tell you then you don't know. And the point is you are not giving enough consideration. Which makes people nervous that maybe you may become less considerate. now that apology wouldn't be worth much because you were not thinking about them. Same with a compliment though for it to be authentic I would want it to be real and something you truly noticed yourself and appreciate enough to say. And that is genuine and those kind of moments are affirming. And I do consider over consider sometimes. so if we were supposed to be headed out already. and my girlfriend was kind of still standing at the mirror adjusting. I would be like you look great. Because I can get the sense if we were supposed to leave at 8 and it is 5 till and they were fussing and not saying anything. I feel that they are maybe unsure. Well I am sure but if I see things like that I am picking up on cues. Not always accurate. Yet you would be surprised if you consider another and know them some you can be very effective at sensing. and I will never understand why they do that. But idk maybe it is the little things. And as if I truly have two licks of fashion sense. I will be honest if I think people look good. and get a little hung up on appearance anyway. But if she has to tell you the type of compliments it defeats authenticity. Now I have been asked rhetorically so just in agreement because she knows like how does my ass look. The tone was she already knew and just wanted to let me get a look also. Fantastic.. Sometimes though because I was simply stunned by how beautiful the colors and way her eyes appeared she must have know never said a word she may not have known but if I notice something I like and say I like it it is sincere. And that is truly special. Overall though and for all I thought my relationships didn't last. And likely it has something to do with communication breakdown. Or incompatibility after we realized that it was some golden months of what I in my simple mind could not differentiate lust and love. That speaks volumes to the haste and thoughtless nature of not knowing each other and also not truly knowing ourselves. And being unwilling to grow with someone.
On July 16, 2021, I was sitting at a counter of an Amish-run diner. It was the lowest point of my life. I felt powerless and had nothing to sustain me. I prayed over my food. The Amish waitress must’ve seen this because in my check she wrote out Matthew 7:7. Within 3 months, I pulled myself out of alcohol dependency & met the love of my life. God will not waste your pain. You need only ask.
Wow, this comment albeit brief, was so vivid considering I have experienced something to that effect. Redolent of the time struggling with anorexia nervosa for 10 unabating years. I must say though I practice a different kind of prayer not in the religious sense as I believe that creation is finished, I need only assume and feel that I am already in my desired state or condition, and so would it be.
I went to my Bible to find that verse. It opened to the exact page. I had started reading Matthew months ago, but didn't keep it up, as I've done so many times. My bookmark was on that page.
A friend of mine who's a lot older than myself, I'm 28 and he is in his 60's, told me this: "Everything worth doing, is worth doing poorly until you can get it right." It's something that has stuck with me and encouraged me ever since.
Every man has the potential to be a great husband and father. I really believe that. Thank you to our men for being men, we appreciate you, and we value your masculinity 🙏🏼
I don't think this is true, any more than it is true that every woman has it in her to be a great wife and mother. Just taking myself (and I'm hardly a rare case), I would be a catastrophe at both. I have a lot of positive traits - I'm great in a crisis, I'm creative, I'm funny, I'm smart, and if I want something there's pretty much nothing that can stop me from getting it - but I just don't have that orientation towards nurturing and caregiving. If I got married and had a kid, I guarantee you all three of us would be miserable. And it stands to reason that the same thing is true of men - some just aren't wired for it. I think it's more accurate to say simply that every person has it in them to be the most optimized version of themselves. But that all being said, I do appreciate the men in our society, and I, like you, value their masculinity. I just think there are other stages it can play out on.
I love you Jordan, I will never forget what you did for me. My father died when I was 9. I'm 30 now & I did my best since then but I've been so lost for so many years... I always thanked God for the path even though I was not enough to hold the weight. The last few days have been a rebirth. after I went for all the spiritual paths and religions finally I came back to Christianity. I finally understood the teachings & how profound they've always been. I feel so in debt. I knew that this was the right path, I wanted to understand life & reality so deeply. I never lost my faith. Not once.
Good to know there are some people like you out there. I hope your life will be as close as possible to God’s plan for you. And if you can be happy from time to time I wish that for you too 👍 We have to keep living and being good.
@@dan.francoyour reply brought tears to my eyes , Jordan helped me too to get my life back and understand bible stories beyond the stories . Thanks for this comment
I find it interesting how Jordan basically says a large portion of the mental illness today is due to lack of encouragement. And what have we as a society been doing for the past 30-50 years? Saying fathers aren't needed. What is the fundamental role of the father? Beyond providing for basic needs, it's to encourage their children to become something more than they are.
yeah , and funny nowadays a lot of men are avoiding being men and try to be women. and a lot of women try to compensate and be men, what do you think about that?
@@ericferre !blame feminism. The welfare state is basically where it started. Women didn't need men anymore for financial support, and ever since then the rate of marriage plummeted. Once we no longer had fathers in the home the problems compounded until what we have today. It's not so much that men are trying to become women, and women men, but rather that those roles have been slowly eroded by activists ever since the 60's and 70's. In the 90's there was a big push to put boys who were a bit hyperactive on drugs to calm them down and now we have educators actively pushing sex changes on these kids. It's generally not the people themselves, it's the society pushing this stuff.
That explains a thing or two, I did have a father. Said father however would never allow us kids to help with any tasks because we would only break things or lose the tools (according to him). So not only did I not get encouraged, I got actively discouraged :) I am one mentally messed up individual.
@@dodopson3211 For what it's worth, 6 months after you commented, I'm in the same boat. My Father was technically around but he was never really "there" and the only times he was "there" was when he was showing disapproval for something I was doing. Not guiding me, not talking with me face to face, just... disapproving. When he wasn't doing that I might as well have not existed
Could it be that the "fathers are not needed" narrative came from the unhinged ,generational abuse of kids suffered at the hands of their fathers? Now that women have money they don't have to sit and take the abuse. 🤔
He is not religious in any traditional sense whatsoever. Watch his debates with Sam Harris...he believes you should live "as if there is a God", he doesn't actually believe that there is a Christian God in the sky.
Jungian psychology emphasizes the importance of the "shadow" as an essential aspect of an individual's psyche that can lead to destructive behaviors if not integrated and acknowledged in a healthy way. The shadow refers to the unconscious and repressed aspects of one's personality that are often deemed unacceptable or negative by society or the individual themselves. These unacknowledged aspects can lead to destructive tendencies, such as violence stemming from offense about a belief or value, making fast judgments about others without knowing the full story, and avoidance of important questions. For example, the Charlie Hebdo shooting in 2015 can be attributed to an unacknowledged shadow in the perpetrators. The gunmen were offended by the satirical cartoons published by the magazine and acted out violently in response. The intensity of their reaction suggests that they may have repressed their own doubts and insecurities about their beliefs and values, and were unable to handle the perceived threat to their identity. Similarly, making fast judgments about others without knowing the full story can stem from an unacknowledged shadow. For instance, wrongful imprisonment can occur when someone is accused of a crime based on circumstantial evidence, rather than a thorough investigation of the facts. This is often due to biases and assumptions about the person's character or background, which can be influenced by an individual's unconscious prejudices and repressed emotions. Lastly, avoidance of important questions can also result from an unacknowledged shadow. In a famous interview with Jordan Peterson, he avoided answering the question about the existence of God. This avoidance can be attributed to the discomfort and anxiety that arise when one confronts the unknown and potentially contradictory aspects of their belief system. By avoiding this confrontation, individuals may fail to fully explore their beliefs and understand the true nature of their values. To address these destructive behaviors, it is important to recognize and integrate the shadow through self-awareness and mindfulness practices. Engaging in constructive dialogue and empathy building can also help individuals recognize their biases and assumptions about others, leading to more thoughtful and informed judgments. Furthermore, practicing critical thinking skills to question one's own beliefs and assumptions can help individuals confront the uncomfortable and unknown aspects of their psyche. In conclusion, the shadow in Jungian psychology is an essential aspect of an individual's psyche that can lead to destructive tendencies if not acknowledged and integrated in a healthy way. Violence stemming from offense about a belief or value, making fast judgments about others without knowing the full story, and avoidance of important questions are all examples of destructive behaviors that can stem from an unacknowledged shadow. By recognizing and integrating the shadow, individuals can move towards a more compassionate and peaceful world.
I heard you need 5 essential relationships OUTSIDE of family alone. that really helped me get out of shyness and extreme introversion. I was so enmeshed with my family of origin I had no other relationships. then I began breaking out of my shell. essential relationship means you can express yourself freely about "musts", "needs" and "wants". figure out what that means to you and God can help too!
@@frankalejandro1997 I was guessing they mean, just 5 different relationships outside of your family of origin… so could be a partner/spouse, friend, etc.
@@frankalejandro1997 A relationship with Christ is the only one we truly need. Without God this life is pointless, something king Solomon discovered maximizing his life.
What is an “essential relationship”? Does that just mean 5 friends? How close of a friend counts? I have occasional interactions with plenty of people, but I’m not close to anyone (including family). There are only 3 people I see regularly: my wife, my son, and my boss.

Old school catholic here. Yeah, one sentence answer. “To know, love and serve God in this life, that I may be happy with Him in the next.” It’s worked for me for 67 years.

Dear Jordan Peterson, you said that the probability to answer the question : “Whats the meaning of my life” is probably zero. I agree with you, because its almost the most complex question we can formulate. But I would propose this as the answer: “The meaning of life is to live fully”
What's amazing is once you can have a bit of vision, you get some hope and all of a sudden things fall into place and come around and manifest. Be true to yourself!! Listen to that inner voice, not what others want. That is where you get to meet the Spirit of God leading you ❤

I hate to say this, but to start finding an intimate relationship, u definitely should avoid online dating. It maybe helpful for being less frightened on date. But if u start labeling profiles and tries to differentiate yourself from them, it'll definitely taint your mind. For intimate relationship, i suggest zizek's method. Which u live for yourself as best u can and when the time comes let it happen the miracles. If u want to keep your ideal of your partners.
A lot of anger stems from pointing outward at other people as being the problems. However the moment we add ourselves TO the world's problems, our own anger tends to subside. I suggest that if we want our own suffering to be less ... we should never point at other people as being evil, but rather just admit that because life has a whole lot of suffering ... all of us in some way or another were, and are, emotionally and physically "wounded."
" Seek, and you'll find " works for lost items, too. My dad likes to be an amateur minister, which was a long ancestral family occupation. He read that bible passage one Sunday. A week or so later, working on my motorcycle, I lost a bolt in the grass. I had a quick look, but it was gone. It came to mind to SEEK it. I found it. And it continues to work !!!!
I discovered that I have a sensitivity to soy. One of the ways my body responded was to spiral into bad depression. I had no idea the two were connected until I stopped eating soy. After a few weeks, my depression stopped. I literally was just sick. That was all.
Same. My body wasn't absorbing anything and inflamed and I was deeply depressed and angry. 6 months of eating the right stuff for me and it's night and day
@@user-kf3vu8ud7s that's a really great and complicated question. It's individual. For me, I had to rebuild my gut biome with pre and pro biotics. I am currently doing a gluten-free, soy-free, and "low FODMAP" diet. As well as taking vitamins and supplements that my body was lacking (which was determined by an in depth blood panel). Nothing overly processed or with a long shelf life and tons of wierd ingredients. Natural and unrefined foods. As well as using sweeteners like honey over processed, bleached sugars. But one of the biggest parts is changing your relationship to food. Changing your biases, a diet is whatever you make it. You can have a diet of McDonald's and pizzas, or a diet of potatoes, rice, meats, fruits/veggies. And overall getting in tune with your body. Alot of food nowadays is pumped full of sugar and other crap, sugar hits the same receptors in the brain as cocaine. It's literally an addiction to food. You feel good while eating it because it tastes good. But how do you feel afterwards? Getting in tune with what your body is REALLY trying to tell you. Oh and I also take either redmans salts or electrolytes to help me actually absorb water. It's been hard and it's a lot to learn. But you have to find what YOUR body needs. But the gut biome thing, Strains like lactobacillus really helped. ( More natural Greek yogurt and this nifty little drink called Yakult have good strains too) I went from being depressed, and bloated and in pain seemingly with whatever I ate, to not being afraid to indulge in the foods that work for me and finally being able to laugh and feel good again. It's still a process, but I'm embracing the changes, because it's so much better than where I was at. Hope that wasn't too much and made some sense. Try changing even one thing at a time, slowly but surely you will find what you need. I'm hopeful this helps 🙏 what do you have to lose? 🤷
There is a one sentence answer … in the book of Ecclesiastes. Everything under the sun is meaningless. All you have to do is live it, experience it, and grow. All you have to know is the moment. That’s why ‘make your bed’ is profound, because it’s living in the moment when everything else is too big to map out.
well I guess to set a goal you first have to ask yourself what are you ready to do only cause your goals are small doesn't mean they can't lead to something big over time the important thing is to go in the direction of your goals like if your goal is to bring your room in order like jordan peterson suggests often just start by doing one or two things every day like take a few bottles bring them out or/and take some trash out it's not as important how much you do it's more important that with what you do you go in the direction of the goal it doesn't needs to be torture or uncomfortable for you to work towards a goal it can be easy and break the goals down as small as is the need to be so you actually do it if a goal is too big just ask yourself whats the smallest possible step towards that goal you can think of right now and you do this till u find a step you actually can take and then also don't over do it it's better to do less than to do too much and lose motivation doing less actually builds your motivation towards it you start to want to clean your room and you are happy for the next day to bring out something else out of your room or to clean something in the example of cleaning your room and you become a sense that you reach your goals everday and that boosts more motivation you can spend on doing other things then less is more guys don't do too much and you will find out that you look forward to cleaning your room greetings from germany
I don't know who that woman is. But its wonderful that she allows him to speak. She allows him to develop and detail his points without interruption. I appreciate that.
Perhaps because of social media profile pages we have this wrong impression that we are supposed to have our life figured out, as though it were a one page presentation.
There are requirements for ask and you shall receive. Marry the heart and the mind, ask with a pure heart and without malicious intent, and follow God's commands.
I said this last week on the verse of the bible that said knock and you will be opened, ask and you will be answered….that verse means to ask to with in and answer always appear, just like thought appears to us and we think about them till depression, if there’s no act and genuine.
Jordan's identity gets its meaning from being a suffering character in a story about rescuing his emotionally chaotic father from conscious consideration. Subsequently, Jordan's identity absolutely would not allow Mikhaila the space and nurture to self-regulate and internally balance.
Well, in my experience, most of the dating apps girls I've encountered were not the type of girl I'd ever want an intimate relationship with, ever! This advice is good for women but horrible for men. The only motivation I ever got from a relationship was the sheer anger of being cheated on. Sorry, at least for the next couple of years that area is going to be untouched.

Its usualy helpful :) I strive to understand and be understood - in political debate and in any kind of topics. But its like... like in recent decade and most notably in recent 2-3 years its more and more difficult to talk to anyone outside of internet. Becouse for me political ideologies/narrations/indoctrinations are like alien planet I always tried to not be included in one or other of them too much and not become on some extreme of any give two factions. Its like...hm... I was raised in total distrust toward political ideology/narration enveloped in nice word-salad of progress, democracy, liberalism, patriotism, tolerance, and so on... every politics and politician for me is just a bunch of careerist who want to sell me smt bad under the pretence of smt good for me, while most probably its bad for me and good for them. Most of those things they try to sell me is only a tool for more control over my mind by them.
Tammy is one year older than him , so basically everytime when she hears him speak some great wisdom she could've never fathomed on her own she be looking at him in aw and in her mind she be like "DAMN ...THIS KID"
Excellent talk however if some of you ever think about the partner matter Do not ever go to online dating You’ll end up upset, resented, with your scarce time wasted and hopeless There’s nothing good on it Try and see .. come back and tell me
It's because our minds are wired to only think about negative thoughts- perceived threats to keep us alive. Write down all of the negative things that could happen so that you can see them on paper. Write down all of the positive things that could happen. Once you see the positives, itll help you weed out the irrational negative thoughts and help you see more clearly. This helps me a lot. Good luck and God bless ❤

I read this quote at 6:04 and it sounds like it's something from a movie hahaha
What I really like about Jordan Peterson is that he is giving advice without invalidating other's suffering.
Every man has the potential to be a great husband and father. I really believe that.
Thank you to our men for being men, we appreciate you, and we value your masculinity 🙏🏼
May I ask what's masculinity in your opinion (I'm not being snarky)?
@@kristint.4562 there’s always exceptions to anything. People like (us) are rare. What age are you? Just curious
Thank you for your optimism!
Everyone woman has the potential to be a great wife and mother too.
Not once.
God bless you Franco, glad to hear you are doing well.

So not only did I not get encouraged, I got actively discouraged :)
I am one mentally messed up individual.
Revelation is real. I love that Dr. Peterson talks about prayer and revelation in a way that entices non-Christians.
It's inclusive - in the proper sense of that word
He is not religious in any traditional sense whatsoever. Watch his debates with Sam Harris...he believes you should live "as if there is a God", he doesn't actually believe that there is a Christian God in the sky.
@@dcs4880 Thank you for mentioning this. A certain amount of people think he's an evangelical christian, and he's actually not.
@@dcs4880yeah that seems like “them’s the facts” and then further that “and god said it was good” too
Jungian psychology emphasizes the importance of the "shadow" as an essential aspect of an individual's psyche that can lead to destructive behaviors if not integrated and acknowledged in a healthy way.
What are these relationships, may I ask? I'm so lacking in basically all human connection its kinda scaring me at this point :(
@@frankalejandro1997 I was guessing they mean, just 5 different relationships outside of your family of origin… so could be a partner/spouse, friend, etc.
Remember… Nothing will ever be handed to you! Keep learning and working on yourself every day and you will succeed!🙏🏼💪🏼

Dear Jordan Peterson, you said that the probability to answer the question : “Whats the meaning of my life” is probably zero.
I agree with you, because its almost the most complex question we can formulate. But I would propose this as the answer:
“The meaning of life is to live fully”
What's amazing is once you can have a bit of vision, you get some hope and all of a sudden things fall into place and come around and manifest. Be true to yourself!! Listen to that inner voice, not what others want. That is where you get to meet the Spirit of God leading you ❤

The immediate slap for assuming the other should know what you want should be Standard Operating Procedure on all couple relationships.
This is sooo Good
I hate to say this, but to start finding an intimate relationship, u definitely should avoid online dating.
It is interesting the knock and it will open is often depicted as a person in front of a door without a way to open it from their side.
I’ve never even seen it be depicted before. Are their paintings of it or something?

Immensely valuable. Thank you, Dr. Peters on.

6 months of eating the right stuff for me and it's night and day
@@augiemay8677 how do you know what foods are bad and good tho

That’s why ‘make your bed’ is profound, because it’s living in the moment when everything else is too big to map out.
well I guess to set a goal you first have to ask yourself what are you ready to do
only cause your goals are small doesn't mean they can't lead to something big over time
the important thing is to go in the direction of your goals
like if your goal is to bring your room in order like jordan peterson suggests often
just start by doing one or two things every day
like take a few bottles bring them out or/and take some trash out
it's not as important how much you do it's more important that with what you do you go in the direction of the goal
it doesn't needs to be torture or uncomfortable for you to work towards a goal it can be easy
and break the goals down as small as is the need to be so you actually do it
if a goal is too big just ask yourself whats the smallest possible step towards that goal you can think of right now and you do this till u find a step you actually can take
and then also don't over do it
it's better to do less than to do too much and lose motivation
doing less actually builds your motivation towards it you start to want to clean your room and you are happy for the next day to bring out something else out of your room or to clean something in the example of cleaning your room
and you become a sense that you reach your goals everday and that boosts more motivation you can spend on doing other things then
less is more guys don't do too much and you will find out that you look forward to cleaning your room
greetings from germany
I don't know who that woman is. But its wonderful that she allows him to speak. She allows him to develop and detail his points without interruption. I appreciate that.

I want to listen to Peterson not only becouse I like to listen about for example mythologies and their connection with psychology, or about his psychological explaination of political ideologies, but I also like to listen to him becouse I sort of... can trust that what he would say about psychology on personal level - about motivation and self awarness and self worth - would be good for me. Its usualy helpful :)
I strive to understand and be understood - in political debate and in any kind of topics.
