    Great job getting out👍 I don’t know what you were Aired down to at the end but I’ve been down to 12 psi quite comfortably on a similar wheel tire combo and it helped a lot also for the future maybe try using a shovel to make the ledge out less aggressive

    • @foldinthemap
      @foldinthemap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only aired down to around 18 in the muddy situation and then 14 ish in the gravel and rocked back and forth a bit in both situations to get moving. The Shovel was my next trick in the mud but was not dressed for the occasion so trying to stay as clean as possible for photos made my life a bit tricky 😂 in the gravel though recovery tracks would have worked best just to give me a slingshot start to get rolling… and get out of the low gears. Cheers for your comment!

  • @onetonlandrover
    @onetonlandrover ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well done. Been in similar situations myself. Often you can rock back and forth to bounce yourself out. That sinking feeling in the stomach is never nice...but i find if you apply the brain it goes away. Funnily enough I'd say my Defender is worse for getting stuck than my 109".

    • @foldinthemap
      @foldinthemap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s so interesting, although I have found the 109 to eat most obstacles for breakfast. Lowering the tyres is a must though, for comfort and capability! We did do a bit of rocking back a fourth not shown in the video but I was very concerned about digging myself in deeper while on my own so opted to improve my chances with my brain as best I could hahah. In the end rocking forward and giving it the beans was probably what got us out. Driftwood was maybe 2 percent responsible for actual traction, but mentally very helpful.

    • @onetonlandrover
      @onetonlandrover ปีที่แล้ว

      @@foldinthemap Yep, building up traction with wood or stones can help, as can lower tyre pressures as you say. With the crash gearbox on a IIA the rocking back and forth can be challenging as it needs to be done quickly, it's much easier in my Defender. On my IIA I have a further advantage of 9.00x16 tyres which improve ground clearance and approach/departure angles. Even so, sometimes the mud wins and I have to resort to my winch or a tow. There are several videos on my channel of my trucks off road if you are interested.

    Here in Australia a lot of the beaches are run by the various indigenous groups and they charge a fee for access, I didn’t know that wasn’t the case in NZ.

    • @foldinthemap
      @foldinthemap  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    • @foldinthemap
      @foldinthemap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot! I’ve been using the hero 11, good non fish eye options at decent resolution and 10bit colour makes all the difference. My setting are, high bitrate, manual white balance auto shutter and auto iso, low sharpness and flat colour. My EV comp is set to -5 in sunny conditions and +5 in cloudy… +7 if the light it really low. I usually shoot 5.3k at 30 frames with linear lens with hyper smooth auto boost on. In post I take the slog footage from my Sony a7siii and reduce the contrast and saturation of the GoPro to match that footage and I do any exposure adjustments on each clip at this stage too. A curves layer to roll off the high lights sometimes helps when the sky is getting a bit clipped. Then I colour grade them both together with my special sauce 😏 hope that makes sense, the main thing is reducing the high contrast, over saturated, over sharpened look GoPro tends to have and starting again from there. Cheers for the comment!

    My wife and I are VERY interested in buying a LR series IIa 109 to convert into something we can live in for 2-3 weeks while exploring Europe. My only worry is the engine power to move everything I would add in the back.
    Can you please comment on how fast (or slow) your series II is with everything you have? Can you cruise comfortably cruise at 80km/h - 90km/h on the highway and what kind of gas mileage are you getting? Oh, and how is the noise level while driving?
    thank you so much! btw, do you have a video going through your LR?

    • @foldinthemap
      @foldinthemap  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Errrrmmmm short answer is, no not really, no one cruises comfortably in a series any faster than 60kmph. The whine of the gearbox and the engine/road/body noise is very loud. I don’t mind it but if you’re worried about being slow, it’s slow.. That wonderful little gearbox when you go offroad though… it takes that little tractor engine and puts a lot of torque to the ground. That’s what they’re best for. For long distance on road travel I’d go a disco 2 or maybe a Range Rover classic for the more retro feel? Td5 defender would go alright too. No not yet! Great to hear from you and thanks for your comment, it sounds like an awesome trip you have planned!

      @foldinthemap Thank you for the reply!
      I was thinking of going crazy with sound deadening to make it quieter and try to remove the tin can sound. But it may not help too much.
      As for the speed, that might be an issue 🤔. By the time I import a series 2a into Portugal and factoring all the maintenance and build for the rear, it'll be around €20,000 +/-. If I want to go with a D110, i'd be looking at €30,000 +/-... The joys of living in Portugal and their crazy (and illegal) import tax scheme.
      But man, 60km/h is slow! Haha. 😬 but it might be worth us saving €10,000. Like they say, its the journey that counts, not the destination, right? Right?
      I thought about the disco 2 and RRC, but they dont have the interior space like the S3 or D110.
      I need to do some soul searching 🧐

    I just found your channel and subscribed. Loved the video, just a suggestion, perhaps you know it by no, but still. Lower your tire pressure as soon as you know you'll be driving off road for a bit. I read you were at 35psi, that ok for highway driving, but it's too much for off road. I drive at around 25psi on dirt roads and at about 12psi on soft surfaces (mud, sand, etc) it depends on your tire size, but you could have got out no problems if you had air down.
    Still, as I say "every mistake, it's an opportunity to learn" all the best from Chile.
    PS: I'm watching from my camp site for tonight, safe travels.

    • @foldinthemap
      @foldinthemap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate cheers for your message and thanks for subscribing! Normally I run 20-25 psi off-road dropping down to 15 in really rocky, Sandy or muddy conditions. It was pure laziness not dropping them down as we were planning a short trip to the beach, I expected the access to be easy but there had been a lot of flooding which made it boggy. It was a fun day out exploring and we were prepared enough but also didn’t expect to get stuck! Being on our own definitely made it feel more challenging as with a support vehicle this would have been a 2 minute recovery tops.

    • @sydgerald
      @sydgerald ปีที่แล้ว

      @@foldinthemap Oh yeah I completely agree, being on your own is something totally different. And also I've been in that situation of planning a short trip thinking "no need to air down" and then getting bogged XD. But if you're not getting stuck you're not exploring.
      A block from where I live on Tuesdays there's a farmers market, and there's this guy (late 60's) who drives a blue Land Rover, He sells books, and this yesterday I was talking to him, it turns out that Land Rover was his father and he got it as a gift from his father about 30 years ago.

      These tyres are plenty aggressive enough… driving in there at 35PSI wasn’t super smart though, running lower PSI makes a lot more of a difference then a different tread pattern imho. I’ve seen plenty of mates with aggressive mud tyres just dig deeper holes.
