There is all ways something crops up with an old Landrover, how many days out ive missed due to unscheduled work on the Series 3
It can be a battle eh, rewarding when you can get out and enjoy it. I’d love to do a crazy build one day that just sorts a few of the niggly things out without changing the nature of the beast too much.
@@foldinthemap my series 3 is having the gearbox rebuilt at this week so back on the road next week.
@@paulwest6262 very exciting! A shiny 'new' gearbox will be a bit of a treat.
@@foldinthemap it was catching going into second gear, one of the 3 detent flat springs broke and came out in the oil,, so I took the chance to have it rebuilt, might stop a few of the oil leaks..... Or slow them back a bit. Loving the videos of your Landrover Series adventures, some amazing landscape and of course the lovely Series 2
Sublime 🫶
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Awesome vid, I just discovered your channel, probably due to my new Series 2a... Leithfield Beach is amazing... I used to live there and was constantly being asked to pull people out... But it's awesomely scenic. Anyway I'm enjoying your vids and will keep an eye out for you on the local trails. Cheers, Steve
Nice one Steve! Cheers for watching. Yes a very pretty spot indeed. Looks very approachable but lots of spots to get stuck haha. Cya out there!
That gap at the front is begging for a winch. 😉
You’re not bloody wrong mate 😏
@@foldinthemap I have a mkii hydraulic on mine, top bit of kit.
Ooh, you changed the front! Good to see you back.
Good to be back, still working on the warrant of fitness though hahaha
@foldinthemap I assume that's like an MOT?
@@onetonlandrover yea exactly, having issues getting the drum brakes balanced.
@foldinthemap They can be a pest unfortunately.
My series 3 has a 2A gearbox i think
Not a bad gearbox reliability wise but way less user friendly eh!
Any chance you would send me the PDF at the start of this, would love to frame it
I’ll see what I can do, what’s your email?
I love the real Land Rovers, not the luxury nonsense they build now. Is the LR Defender better than the series or not?
Agreed. Yes and no, there was deep ruts that the 130 sailed over like they weren’t there and had me almost tipping over. They both have their advantages and disadvantages… I think Phil’s back came off better then mine though 😂
Voice got a bit annoying due to lack of tonality but it was really well made
I’ll make sure to fire the voice over guy
Missed these videos
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Priceless
Yep!
Thank fuck mine has got a series 3 box
You lucky duck 😅
I do feel for you as my synchro on second still works, but it doesn’t work on third and fourth
@@Snorting-tuna My 1960 S2 88" slipped out of 2nd gear. Had it fixed. 2000km later, started slipping out of 3rd... Had it fixed.... After 600km, she spilled all her fresh new clean gearbox oil overnight on my rental's garage floor.. I'm done after a 30 year love affair.. She will be discovered as a barn find, and will become some new W⚓'s nightmare. 🇿🇦 F#ck the Green Oval.
@@alwynvanwyk1851who rebuilt the box when the original problem started, it's not the Landrovers fault it's the cheap fixes carried out, when fixing a gearbox strip the whole thing and rebuild it fully costs a couple of grand but done for years. Series 3 suffix A are a strong box. Don't be the quitter over a gearbox.
It's trauma bonding.
Is that what that crunching sound is? 😅😅😅
Where is your cool dude voice gone to from your earlier vlogs that disappeared in the mist.
Never!!!❤
🖤🖤🖤
@@foldinthemap it’s still a dream of mine to one day own a Defender. I love the model you got. It’s such a beauty!
Nothing new? One year later? Still got the sexy chick.? Obviously the Landy pack up, you gave it away, bought an Electric car, doing interior designing vlogs now..🤔🤔🤔.
Wow where is this freedom place 😮 i am from Pennsylvania i am stuck please help 😊
New Zealand!
What a beautiful view!
Agreed!
Sorry, I'm an old fart... Cinematography 😂
What a befokte ( stoke) video... Glad to see you guys again... Bokkie in her Suzi, Landy in his habitat, super photography... 🎖️🇿🇦
Much appreciated, thought it was time to poke my head back up!
Gotta say love your overland videos. the cinematography and narration are so good.
Thanks so much for these kind words, and cheers for watching!
My wife and I are VERY interested in buying a LR series IIa 109 to convert into something we can live in for 2-3 weeks while exploring Europe. My only worry is the engine power to move everything I would add in the back. Can you please comment on how fast (or slow) your series II is with everything you have? Can you cruise comfortably cruise at 80km/h - 90km/h on the highway and what kind of gas mileage are you getting? Oh, and how is the noise level while driving? thank you so much! btw, do you have a video going through your LR?
Errrrmmmm short answer is, no not really, no one cruises comfortably in a series any faster than 60kmph. The whine of the gearbox and the engine/road/body noise is very loud. I don’t mind it but if you’re worried about being slow, it’s slow.. That wonderful little gearbox when you go offroad though… it takes that little tractor engine and puts a lot of torque to the ground. That’s what they’re best for. For long distance on road travel I’d go a disco 2 or maybe a Range Rover classic for the more retro feel? Td5 defender would go alright too. No not yet! Great to hear from you and thanks for your comment, it sounds like an awesome trip you have planned!
@foldinthemap Thank you for the reply! I was thinking of going crazy with sound deadening to make it quieter and try to remove the tin can sound. But it may not help too much. As for the speed, that might be an issue 🤔. By the time I import a series 2a into Portugal and factoring all the maintenance and build for the rear, it'll be around €20,000 +/-. If I want to go with a D110, i'd be looking at €30,000 +/-... The joys of living in Portugal and their crazy (and illegal) import tax scheme. But man, 60km/h is slow! Haha. 😬 but it might be worth us saving €10,000. Like they say, its the journey that counts, not the destination, right? Right? I thought about the disco 2 and RRC, but they dont have the interior space like the S3 or D110. I need to do some soul searching 🧐
Very very beautiful 😢😢😊😊❤❤
Thank you!
What happened to you guys. Must I un-subscribe, as you left the Earth, or sold the Landy, or faktup the Landy or your pretty chick found a Toyota guy or or or or what....your videos were the best on TH-cam 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Be back soon mate, been very unwell unfortunately.
I also want to go on a nice trip on an off-road vehicle someday.
do it!!!
You said you're inexperienced... I say, you are learning the most amazing way possible, using your 109 and loving it. That engine sounds awesome! Btw
Cheers! Couldn’t agree more, always learning, always enjoying the ride 🙏🏼🤙🏼
Beautiful video
Cheers mate! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Tyre pressures in both vehicles look rock hard
@@hindian21 yes they were, mostly out of complete laziness. This did not cause the flat tyre however, that was down to the person who installed them and the tubes incorrectly.
So, did your map got folded permanently 🤔
@@alwynvanwyk1851 engines don’t rebuild themselves…
I love this song and that color! Pretty…..
🙏🏼🖤
the final spot was lovely, that top tide-piled round gravel is soft as...
Yes! Haha a trap for young players that’s for sure. Not the first time it’s got me and won’t be the last.
Nice ride👍 and a beautyfull scenery👍
Cheers legend!
Great vid! That near rollover got my heartrate up!
Cheers! Haha you and me both. Certainly learned a thing or two and happy to have gotten away with it unscathed.
Only in a Series Land Rover it's just simply a way of life. Both my Series 1 and my Series 2A are still running strong after all the years. They've never let me down, and have always brought me home, under their own power.
Sounds like a good pair of legends. Can’t say the same for mine haha but hopefully soon it will be that reliable! Post engine rebuild things are looking up.
1995, 3 poms and a Nissan Bluebird... went bungy jumping, because that was the thing to do. Wonderful memories. The road looks in better condition now.
Just to clarify, the nissan DIDN'T go bungy jumping...
What a trip that must have been! To bungy off the skippers bridge is a pretty epic claim to have. The road is still hair raising but certainly well maintained. We were having issues with the brakes and the truck over heating though 😅😂
Awesome! Looks like Chile!
Another beautiful country!
@@foldinthemap awesome! Love your videos!
New Zealand looks really stunning

Love watching your adventures and look forward to the rebuilt engine getting the gang out. Cheers from Canada
Cheers! Greetings and salutations, full steam ahead on the rebuild.
Why didn’t you go further up the trail you were a long way from the end
Because our destination was the hot pools and Scottie’s hut.
I just found your videos. Great work, great pictures, very good music and perfect voice, beautiful country and a lovely Series 2A. I like your videos so much. Thanks a lot for these great moments with your Vlog, Sven from Germany
This encouragement means a lot so thank you! Thanks for watching stoked to have you along for the ride! 🙂
We will have you back on the road in no time 😄
Yeeooowww!
Always enjoy your videos, hope the rebuild goes well and Ramps up the enthusiasm for future epics in the series 2!
Cheers for the encouragement, I surely need it but I think you’re right, enthusiasm is already building to get some use out of the fresh engine!
Rather have snow then hot weather
Big call! But I like it
The radiator cap... eish. I did that and nearly ruined my Landy engine and made atrip to the Okavango and Mozambique really "interesting"...
Gotta make sure that fella is on good and tight haha. New radiator and brand new cap going in next week so we’ll have no more leaky leaky.
💖
🙏🏼🖤
Gosh they're cantankerous old vehicles but you've got to love them! Very thoughtful of it to break down on the blacktop and not up the valley, looking forward to seeing her after the operation
Aren’t they just. That is definitely the word. Yea alls well that ends well. Not long now and she’ll be back on the dusty trail!
Congratulations for the quality of your videos mate, they're all great ! We will soon go for a very long trip with our series 3 and your channel inspires us a lot ! Cheers to Phill !
Cheers! Thanks for watching. That sounds awesome can’t wait to see your journey🤙🏼🖤
Me as an European constantly thinking about driving an oil leaking car through a pristine and clear water stream, spoiling thousands of liter water with a few drops. Killing animals and destroying mother nature. A different country, different customs ... i guess.
*leaking coolant actually
@@foldinthemap Could be even an oil film on the transmissions case or the engine or somewhere else on the underside, it's an old car, or asbestos break dust that gets washed of by the river crossing, driving fast though water. Doesn't even needs to be an bashed oil sump or engine blow-up. It's like an underfloor/underbody washing, just in nature.
The good news is the glacier is still melting, feeding more loverly pure water into the flow
You can tell how much a vehicle loves you by where it breaks down. Obviously, your Landy loves you. Good luck on the rebuild!
I tend to think you might be right. I’ve probably needed new rings for a while so if held on as long as it could. Cheers! Looking forward to having it fighting fit again.
Having done thousands of miles in an old Series 2a, I do miss the charming feeling of doing it 'old school'. It is makes you feel like a genuine traveller. I do not, however, miss only having 50-odd horsepower, leaf springs, and manual steering. My 60+ year old body is well past that. That being said, my 1987 LR 110 (pre-Defender) is still old school charming enough even with coil springs, power steering and 230+ horsepower. It still requires you to be a trail side mechanic to keep it going. They say that 90% of Land Rovers are still on the road...and 10% have made it back home. There is more than a hint of truth in that! ;-)
The series Rovers are brutally simple and it’s an absolute challenge to drive and work on them… but sometimes they just make you smile more than any other car. Wouldn’t mind coil springs and power steering though!
