My mom was a coal miners daughter so we loved this song. She was born in a log cabin in Harlan Co KY during the coal miners war there. My grandfather broke his back twice in the mines and the second time they told him he couldn’t come back so they became sharecroppers until he got enough money to move to Cincinnati to find work. My mom always laughed at this song because she said the people in this song were rich because they had a hog to sell. She said they didn’t have even that. Her dad made them shoes to wear and they would put cardboard in the bottom when holes came through the soles.

Speaking from experience, this is a very accurate depiction. My kids, grandkids and I now live in Oklahoma. But my life started out very similarly to this song. I was also born in Kentucky, and my dad was also a coal miner. There were nine kids in my family. We did not have indoor plumbing, so I remember carrying water up from the creek, using an outhouse, seeing my mother wash our clothes outside in a metal tub with a washboard. I remember running around barefoot in the summers and getting new shoes when school started. Our lives changed when I was seven years old and my grandparents convinced my dad to move us to the Detroit area for better work opportunities. Though my dad never became wealthy. My brother still lives on our family property in the middle of Cumberland Gap National Park in Kentucky. We have family reunions there every year, and we all still call it “home”. My kids and my grandson have played in the same creek behind my brother’s house that I played in as a child.

It is about a poor white family that has never been anything else and they pick cotton in Oklahoma, but the voice of the song character doesn't want to live like that and he promised himself when he was older he would never pick cotton. And he turned to be a very rebellious kid that ran away and got into all kinds of trouble to the point of killing a man and they were going to hang him the next day, but he was proud that when he was being hung he never picked cotton. It is a great song and Roy Clark sang it.

In those days a woman's life was taking care of the home and children! I have followed Lorettas life and music for well over 50 years. I have read all her biographies and have been to her family farm! I will say it again, the music is about their life!

As a Kentuckian, we are often stereotyped especially people from the Mountains, and I think this song not only praised her parents, but made it very clear that she was not embarrassed, or ashamed of where she came from. Adversity forges a fine people.

"Old school country" is what my dad introduced me to when I drove him to the Fort for PTSD treatment (a Korean war vet). Loretta Lynn was one of top favorites. This song is one of reasons. He could relate to this so much! This was the story of his parents as well as my mom and him. They definitely all worked hard, the men at humble jobs (grandpa was a farmer and coal miner, Dad a ranch hand and auto mechanic) and the women working to raise numerous kids and the hard work that entails.

Beautiful Loretta! Great reaction & analysis! She was an icon. A brutally honest songwriter & fabulous singer. Yes, she for sure is in O.G. She wrote it like she saw it & sang it like she meant it! In her day she was actually controversial, her songs spoke openly about some topics, such as birth control, that were deemed to be inappropriate for main stream radio. Yet those songs rose to the top of the charts anyway! Some of my favorites are You Ain't Woman Enough, Fist City, You're Lookin At Country & I Can't Hear The Music Anymore. Really anything of hers is worth exploring. In an interview with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes she talked about how the execs at the record company tried to change her to fit into the mainstream, especially the way she talked, but it didn't work. She was a country girl from the hills of Kentucky & that was it. She stayed true to herself. I love & respect that the most about her. RIp sweet Loretta.
I can relate so much to this song. My father worked in a factory, making commercial ovens from stainless steel, in Southeastern Ohio. My parents raised 11 children in some pretty tough financial times. Especially after my father got hurt on the job, lifting a sheet of steel up on the shear table where he would cut the sheets into pieces from the blueprints. He seriously injured his spine and got a double hernia at the same time. He was never able to work after that. However, he did what he could to support his large family. He hunted and trapped furbearing animals so he could sell the pelts. We also raised very large gardens and raised chickens & hogs for food. We didn't always have what we wanted, but for the most part, we had what we needed to survive. My mother let the older siblings babysit the little ones, while she cleaned houses for pay. Us kids worked in the garden and helped with the butchering of hogs in the fall. At one time, we didn't have running water in the house and had to carry our drinking/cooking water from a spring, located about 1/4 mile down over the hill from our house. We would line up and go down to the spring, carrying bleach jugs to carry the water in. The older kids would carry gallon jugs and the younger ones, half gallon jugs. Yes, it was a hard life, But there was more than enough love in our home to carry us through. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Later, after graduating from high school, I enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where I served for 6 years. I was just 5ft 1in tall and 117lbs, but I had the toughness and determination to make it. I went on to have a career as a 9-1-1 dispatcher and even worked in a medium security prison before retiring from the state of West Virginia at the end of 2016. I have been blessed and continue to be, as a gospel music recording artist and I now build custom desktop computers.

I’ve shared this story on several different accounts but it’s worth sharing again. I took my daughters to see her in concert & she was just amazing!! Her daughter opened the show for her & then she came out wearing one of her beautiful big ball gowns. She recently had hip surgery so she sat the whole show & took request all evening. My daughter was thrilled when she sang her request & allowed her to stand by the stage & sing with her. After the show was over her daughter allowed some of her fans on the bus. My daughters were lucky enough to go on, get a signed set of her CDs & a pic with her. Even after she became super famous she still remained so down to earth!! We lost an amazing lady when she passed away.

I was on her ranch for the 4th of July celebration two or three summers before she passed and she came to the stage to talk to the crowd a bit and she sang a part of this song. IT WAS AMAZING! She lived on her ranch until she passed. Her granddaughter and Conway Twitty's grandson have a duo now, and they honor their grandparents.
My husband met Loretta Lynn in the Philippines when he was playing backup bass for Freddy Fender. They were all part of a big USO tour and he had many memorable moments but, the thing he treasured most was meeting Lorettie. He said she was the kindest person he'd ever met.
This is a classic old-school country! It is a tribute to a father who worked his backsides off to support a family in the old days down in Coal Country and how tough life was in general. These people didn't have any modern conveniences such as electricity, running water, used coal for heating, and earning amounts of money we couldn't believe by today's standards. I don't know if our generation could make it like this today. It's no wonder these guys passed on in their early sixties - they were worn out. And of course, the Mom's had it rough too - washing clothes by hand and cooking on coal stoves. Loretta Lynn is one of the best ever.
Yes, it was a time where the miners made, if lucky, $5 a week working 60-70 hours a week with little to no safety equipment or anything else to help protect them. Then that little bit of money ended up at the company store for things like flour, coffee, and food. When the food bill was over that $5, it was put on a tab and the miners would have to work it off. Many of the miners would pass with a big debt still owed to the company store. The company would take the farms and the homes of those who didn't pay off those debts

If you go thru Charleston WVA there is a huge Coal Mine that you can see that ash and smoke miles away - I understand they have tours of it for the public - I think every American needs to see it. This song brings back so many memories. My daddy was a coal miner and raised 7 kids on a miner’s pay. It was a hard life. Makes me so thankful that my parents got to enjoy some of the modern convinces before they passed away, that we now take for granted.

When I was a teenager, I worked taking tickets and ushering at Rupp Arena, in Lexington, Kentucky, from 1977 to 1980. The University of Kentucky plays basketball there, and in the 1970s, there were a lot of concerts at that venue. When Loretta Lynn and her performing partner, Conway Twitty had a concert there, the entire population of Butcher Holler, Kentucky showed up. After the concert, Loretta and Conway sat on the stage and signed autographs and took pictures for over 2 hours. They must have been exhausted, but I have never seen two more gracious performers and they would not leave until every single audience member was satisfied.
My grandad worked with Loretta's husband before she made it big, when they lived in Washington State. I wish I'd been able to meet her, she was an amazing woman.

It's about time you watched some of Miss Loretta. She's one of the biggest legend's of all time. And the songs we wrote - all about real women's issues just when women weren't supposed to talk about. And one of the most down to home people you'd ever meet. The movie about her life starred Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones (they did their own singing!!) was incredible. Miss Loretta's catalogue in one I could spend days singing along to. One of her later records Van Lear Rose was done with Jack White of the White Stripes - it's epic. Can't hit a wrong note with Miss Loretta.
This always makes me think of my Granny and PawPaw. In the early years of their marriage, they were migrant workers, and spent much of their time in the pecan orchards in Texas picking up pecans. They worked and lived outdoors in the orchard and slept in a makeshift lean to. All of their cooking was done outdoors over a fire, and all of their washing was done by hand. During these years, they had one baby to care for in the midst of all of the hardship. They went on to become owners of 80 acres of land, business owners, and my grandmother became a master sewing instructor for Singer sewing machine company. Regardless of the amount of “success“ they had in their lifetime, my Granny told me that the days living in that pecan orchard were the best days of her life.

Your comments are so right on point. My daughter, son in law and two granddaughters arrived to visit for Thanksgiving today. Her dad and I worked hard and sacrificed a lot. He was in undergraduate school from the time our daughter was two and half and graduated from seminary with a Masters of Divinity seven years later and then served his country as a military chaplain for thirty years. We were often poor in those early years but the love we had for our daughter and God carried us through those difficult times. She is now an amazing woman, wife and mother and I'm so proud of who she has become. Faith and love is key. Not worldly achievements.
She was also an early advocate for women standing up for themselves and being treated respectfully in their marriages because she was married so young (disputed as to if she was 13 or 15 at the time) and had a wandering husband. Her songs, Don't Come Home Drinkin' With Lovin' On Your Mind, Fist City, You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man, and The Pill among them. Loretta didn't play, she told it like it was. She was also mentored and very close friends with Patsy Cline before Patsy's early death in the plane crash. Those two women together for another 50 or 60 years would have been a force.
My mother an aunt got to tour her house and take pictures with her they said she was the most down to earth person they ever met and the sweetest wish I would've gotten to meet her only thing I got to do was tour her hurricane mills it was beautiful❤

A friend of mine put the essence of this song perfectly. The real unsung heroes in this world are the men and women who get up everyday and go out do a job that hate to provide for their families without complaint because they love.

Her husband was both a drunk and a womanizer (she always stood by him), and she wrote several songs about it, most notable You Ain’t Woman Enough (a must listen) and Don’t Come Home a-Drinkin. In 1975 as the birth control pill was being introduced, and ladies were discovering they could be more than wifes and mothers, she wrote and recorded the song The Pill, it was scandalous at the time and banned from being played on most radio stations yet still became a hit and the anthem for many ladies during that time.

My brother still lives on our family property in the middle of Cumberland Gap National Park in Kentucky. We have family reunions there every year, and we all still call it “home”. My kids and my grandson have played in the same creek behind my brother’s house that I played in as a child.

It is about a poor white family that has never been anything else and they pick cotton in Oklahoma, but the voice of the song character doesn't want to live like that and he promised himself when he was older he would never pick cotton. And he turned to be a very rebellious kid that ran away and got into all kinds of trouble to the point of killing a man and they were going to hang him the next day, but he was proud that when he was being hung he never picked cotton.

In those days a woman's life was taking care of the home and children! I have followed Lorettas life and music for well over 50 years. I have read all her biographies and have been to her family farm! I will say it again, the music is about their life!

They called Loretta Lynn the First Lady of Country Music but she was so much more than that… she WAS country music. She is a legend. Her music was written by her and performed by her.
As a Kentuckian, we are often stereotyped especially people from the Mountains, and I think this song not only praised her parents, but made it very clear that she was not embarrassed, or ashamed of where she came from. Adversity forges a fine people.

"Old school country" is what my dad introduced me to when I drove him to the Fort for PTSD treatment (a Korean war vet). Loretta Lynn was one of top favorites. This song is one of reasons. He could relate to this so much! This was the story of his parents as well as my mom and him. They definitely all worked hard, the men at humble jobs (grandpa was a farmer and coal miner, Dad a ranch hand and auto mechanic) and the women working to raise numerous kids and the hard work that entails.
Must reactions "You ain't woman enough h to take my man" and "Don't come home adrinkin' with loving on your mind" Married at 13 and supported the family. She is a true country legend.

Beautiful Loretta! Great reaction & analysis! She was an icon. A brutally honest songwriter & fabulous singer. Yes, she for sure is in O.G. She wrote it like she saw it & sang it like she meant it! In her day she was actually controversial, her songs spoke openly about some topics, such as birth control, that were deemed to be inappropriate for main stream radio. Yet those songs rose to the top of the charts anyway! Some of my favorites are You Ain't Woman Enough, Fist City, You're Lookin At Country & I Can't Hear The Music Anymore. Really anything of hers is worth exploring. In an interview with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes she talked about how the execs at the record company tried to change her to fit into the mainstream, especially the way she talked, but it didn't work. She was a country girl from the hills of Kentucky & that was it. She stayed true to herself. I love & respect that the most about her. RIp sweet Loretta.
I can relate so much to this song. My father worked in a factory, making commercial ovens from stainless steel, in Southeastern Ohio. My parents raised 11 children in some pretty tough financial times. Especially after my father got hurt on the job, lifting a sheet of steel up on the shear table where he would cut the sheets into pieces from the blueprints. He seriously injured his spine and got a double hernia at the same time. He was never able to work after that. However, he did what he could to support his large family. He hunted and trapped furbearing animals so he could sell the pelts. We also raised very large gardens and raised chickens & hogs for food. We didn't always have what we wanted, but for the most part, we had what we needed to survive. My mother let the older siblings babysit the little ones, while she cleaned houses for pay. Us kids worked in the garden and helped with the butchering of hogs in the fall. At one time, we didn't have running water in the house and had to carry our drinking/cooking water from a spring, located about 1/4 mile down over the hill from our house. We would line up and go down to the spring, carrying bleach jugs to carry the water in. The older kids would carry gallon jugs and the younger ones, half gallon jugs. Yes, it was a hard life, But there was more than enough love in our home to carry us through. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Later, after graduating from high school, I enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where I served for 6 years. I was just 5ft 1in tall and 117lbs, but I had the toughness and determination to make it. I went on to have a career as a 9-1-1 dispatcher and even worked in a medium security prison before retiring from the state of West Virginia at the end of 2016. I have been blessed and continue to be, as a gospel music recording artist and I now build custom desktop computers.
Loretta wrote this about her life. I saw her live a few years before she died and still had a great show in her late 70’s.
Loretta is the real deal. Country to her bones, and it was a real hard scrabble life for her family. I’d be surprised if she didn’t write this. She wrote almost all of her songs. Love Loretta!!

I’ve shared this story on several different accounts but it’s worth sharing again. I took my daughters to see her in concert & she was just amazing!! Her daughter opened the show for her & then she came out wearing one of her beautiful big ball gowns. She recently had hip surgery so she sat the whole show & took request all evening. My daughter was thrilled when she sang her request & allowed her to stand by the stage & sing with her. After the show was over her daughter allowed some of her fans on the bus. My daughters were lucky enough to go on, get a signed set of her CDs & a pic with her. Even after she became super famous she still remained so down to earth!!
We lost an amazing lady when she passed away.

I was on her ranch for the 4th of July celebration two or three summers before she passed and she came to the stage to talk to the crowd a bit and she sang a part of this song. IT WAS AMAZING! She lived on her ranch until she passed. Her granddaughter and Conway Twitty's grandson have a duo now, and they honor their grandparents.
My husband met Loretta Lynn in the Philippines when he was playing backup bass for Freddy Fender. They were all part of a big USO tour and he had many memorable moments but, the thing he treasured most was meeting Lorettie. He said she was the kindest person he'd ever met.
This is a classic old-school country! It is a tribute to a father who worked his backsides off to support a family in the old days down in Coal Country and how tough life was in general. These people didn't have any modern conveniences such as electricity, running water, used coal for heating, and earning amounts of money we couldn't believe by today's standards. I don't know if our generation could make it like this today. It's no wonder these guys passed on in their early sixties - they were worn out. And of course, the Mom's had it rough too - washing clothes by hand and cooking on coal stoves. Loretta Lynn is one of the best ever.
Yes, it was a time where the miners made, if lucky, $5 a week working 60-70 hours a week with little to no safety equipment or anything else to help protect them. Then that little bit of money ended up at the company store for things like flour, coffee, and food. When the food bill was over that $5, it was put on a tab and the miners would have to work it off. Many of the miners would pass with a big debt still owed to the company store. The company would take the farms and the homes of those who didn't pay off those debts

If you go thru Charleston WVA there is a huge Coal Mine that you can see that ash and smoke miles away - I understand they have tours of it for the public - I think every American needs to see it. Our independence as a nation really comes from providing the energy we need. And appreciate the people who make it happen.

This song brings back so many memories. My daddy was a coal miner and raised 7 kids on a miner’s pay. It was a hard life. Makes me so thankful that my parents got to enjoy some of the modern convinces before they passed away, that we now take for granted.
Loretta has so many fantastic songs, but far and away what I always recommend listening to is "The Pill" - for those of us who have lived always being able to control our reproductive choices, it's a testament to how massive a change it was for women when medical birth control was legalized.
As I was growing up my mother played a lot of Loretta Lynn's music I know every song she ever done. At first I didn't like country music but hearing her great voice and many of her songs changed my mind about country music.When she passed away last year we lost another Icon R.I.P Loretta Lynn.

When I was a teenager, I worked taking tickets and ushering at Rupp Arena, in Lexington, Kentucky, from 1977 to 1980. The University of Kentucky plays basketball there, and in the 1970s, there were a lot of concerts at that venue. When Loretta Lynn and her performing partner, Conway Twitty had a concert there, the entire population of Butcher Holler, Kentucky showed up. After the concert, Loretta and Conway sat on the stage and signed autographs and took pictures for over 2 hours. They must have been exhausted, but I have never seen two more gracious performers and they would not leave until every single audience member was satisfied.
She was a grand lady. Saw her many times in person. What a gift to country.

Since I was a coal miner, my wife's dad, grandfather, and uncles were all coal miners the movie Coal Miner's Daughter was almost required watching in our family.
Loretta Lynn was my Mom's all time favorite singer!

I remember when I was a little girl and the movie Coal miner’s Daughter opened in nashville and Loretta was there! It was the story of her life.
It's about time you watched some of Miss Loretta. She's one of the biggest legend's of all time. And the songs we wrote - all about real women's issues just when women weren't supposed to talk about. And one of the most down to home people you'd ever meet. The movie about her life starred Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones (they did their own singing!!) was incredible. Miss Loretta's catalogue in one I could spend days singing along to. One of her later records Van Lear Rose was done with Jack White of the White Stripes - it's epic. Can't hit a wrong note with Miss Loretta.

This always makes me think of my Granny and PawPaw. In the early years of their marriage, they were migrant workers, and spent much of their time in the pecan orchards in Texas picking up pecans. They worked and lived outdoors in the orchard and slept in a makeshift lean to. All of their cooking was done outdoors over a fire, and all of their washing was done by hand. During these years, they had one baby to care for in the midst of all of the hardship. They went on to become owners of 80 acres of land, business owners, and my grandmother became a master sewing instructor for Singer sewing machine company. Regardless of the amount of “success“ they had in their lifetime, my Granny told me that the days living in that pecan orchard were the best days of her life.
My mother lived like that. She had 14 brothers and sisters. They all was very close. They are all gone now. I miss them so much!

Your comments are so right on point. My daughter, son in law and two granddaughters arrived to visit for Thanksgiving today. Her dad and I worked hard and sacrificed a lot. He was in undergraduate school from the time our daughter was two and half and graduated from seminary with a Masters of Divinity seven years later and then served his country as a military chaplain for thirty years. We were often poor in those early years but the love we had for our daughter and God carried us through those difficult times. She is now an amazing woman, wife and mother and I'm so proud of who she has become. Faith and love is key. Not worldly achievements.
She was also an early advocate for women standing up for themselves and being treated respectfully in their marriages because she was married so young (disputed as to if she was 13 or 15 at the time) and had a wandering husband. Her songs, Don't Come Home Drinkin' With Lovin' On Your Mind, Fist City, You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man, and The Pill among them. Loretta didn't play, she told it like it was. She was also mentored and very close friends with Patsy Cline before Patsy's early death in the plane crash. Those two women together for another 50 or 60 years would have been a force.
My mother an aunt got to tour her house and take pictures with her they said she was the most down to earth person they ever met and the sweetest wish I would've gotten to meet her only thing I got to do was tour her hurricane mills it was beautiful❤

A friend of mine put the essence of this song perfectly. The real unsung heroes in this world are the men and women who get up everyday and go out do a job that hate to provide for their families without complaint because they love.
Loretta was and always will be a national treasure. Don’t let that sweet smile and angelic voice fool you though, the lady had fire in her soul. Her husband was both a drunk and a womanizer (she always stood by him), and she wrote several songs about it, most notable You Ain’t Woman Enough (a must listen) and Don’t Come Home a-Drinkin. In 1975 as the birth control pill was being introduced, and ladies were discovering they could be more than wifes and mothers, she wrote and recorded the song The Pill, it was scandalous at the time and banned from being played on most radio stations yet still became a hit and the anthem for many ladies during that time.
