    ------------------------------------------
    A collection of my favorite moments from our Thailand dream vacation captured on the Sigma fp. I travelled somewhat light for this trip, only bringing what I thought I may need for lenses and using primarily only a couple.
    I kept the vintage Nikon on practically the whole time, switching to the Canon 28mm when I needed just a teensy bit more light or a wider angle of view. I only used the Helios and the Rokinon one time each throughout the whole trip - primarily cause the Rokinon was a little large an impractical for the Sigma fp, and I had forgotten the proper step-up ring to adapter my variable ND for the Helios 😖
    All in all, the Sigma fp performed wonderfully. It really did take me several days to become fully comfortable and confident in operating it in a true run 'n' gun situation, but once I overcame the learning curve it was a joy to use.
    All the shots in this video were captured handheld except for three shots at 0:20, 0:57 and 2:04, on which I used a gimbal - the Zhiyun Crane 2s. Enjoy!

    Gorgeous. Just got a Sigma fp for an upcoming project. I’m curious your workflow.

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +41

      For this project I shot in 12-bit 30p and 10-bit 100p (both conformed to 24p inside Resolve). I compressed the DNG files using SlimRaw straight off my Samsung T5 to a LaCie drive that I used to hold the files during the edit, reducing their size a bit and making all the media a tad bit more manageable. Due to the sheer amount of footage on each sequence, I had to create ProRes LT proxies to facilitate a smoother watch-down and organization. I hadn’t had to create proxies thus far when working with CinemaDNG, but this time proved different (for context I’m working on a 2019 MacBook Pro with and 8-core i9, 64 GB of RAM and an 8 GB Radeon Pro 5500M). Once I got into the main edit, I turned off the proxies and the edit ran smoothly. I typically set my project resolution to 1920x1080 until I’m close to export and set the render cache setting to “Smart” for ease of playback. Right before export I change the project resolution setting over to UHD and render at normal ProRes 422. Nice and simple right? 🤣😂

      @@DylColeman oh wow. Thanks for taking a moment to provide this information. Realizing Premier won’t cut it for this project, so learning Resolve is on the short-list. Which lens did you use? Why?

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BrienDunn I used two lenses mainly - a vintage Nikon (Nikkor) 35mm f/2 and the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8. I used the Helios 44-2 58mm briefly during sunset at Elephant Nature Park and a Rokinon 14mm for the one wide shot of Bangkok toward the beginning of the video. Honestly, I used the Nikon mostly because I just love the way it looks. The Canon was just a lens I’ve had for a while and the Helios is one I’ve also enjoyed getting to know since I picked it up awhile back.

      Thank you! And yes - it takes a little getting used to - but the Sigma fp definitely works as a travel cam after you get over the learning curve lol. I absolutely HAD to process as I went. I would offload the one of two 1 TB Samsung T5 drives every evening by compressing the files via SlimRaw straight onto a LaCie rugged hard drive. I would not have been able to shoot very much without doing so. Once compressed the file sizes are very manageable, but compression takes time, and I also ended up having to create proxies in editing due to the sheer amount of footage inside the DaVinci Resolve project. Amazing work!! You created some amazing images with this camera. I have an FP but haven't used it a load yet. Trying to work out if it's the right camera to bring to Japan/Korea next year and what I'm going to need... When you're monitoring, what colour profile do you find yourself using to view? I think I've found "the one" and then I end up changing it in different conditions. I find the biggest downside for me, bigger than those you mention in your video and most people mention, is the monitoring situation with no log profile and therefore ability to use a viewing LUT :/ I'm hoping Sigma address this at some point, if not with firmware, then in a next generation camera 🤞

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't actually use a viewing profile when monitoring. I only use false color to judge exposure, and I almost always stick to the base 100 ISO and protect the highlights. This usually means I end up underexposing by a stop or two every time, but you can bring back SO much in Resolve.

      I brought two Samsung T5 1 terabyte SSDs and a Lacie Rugged drive for offloading each night. Offloading with SlimRaw each night was essential. The offload process via that software would shrink the file sizes as well, so even though I was filling the Samsungs almost every day, I was able to fit everything into one Lacie drive by the end. The total amount of footage was almost 2 TB after SlimRaw compression

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would be a good test. I’ve never used the bmpcc6k personally but I’m very impressed by the image I’ve see other creators produce. You also have to define the specifics of what you mean by “quality” as well. Are we talking bit depth, codec options, color science, etc. ? That’s also why I think it would make such an interesting test

    • @jaysnappsmediallc
      @jaysnappsmediallc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions, I guess in terms of dynamic range and color. Which I guess I ultimately mean, which “looks” more cinematic or filmic.

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaysnappsmediallc another great idea for a test. The Sigma fp reportedly has 12.5 stops of dynamic range at ISO 100 while the Bmpcc6k boasts 13.4 stops at ISO 400. I haven’t tested either, but it’s also interesting to note how much detail is actually recoverable in post for underexposed or overexposed images captured by each. You can’t change ISO after the fact on fp footage in Resolve, but in my experience so far I’ve been able to recover 3 or 4 stops of shadow detail in Resolve on underexposed shots which I’m honestly amazed by. Also the noise patterns on the Sigma footage are actually very pleasing to me, while the noise on the blackmagic (on the 4k anyway) is always something I’d prefer to reduce or remove. I think there’s a comparison to be made for sure, but when it comes down to it, they BOTH produce great images. Which one is “better” also depends greatly on how you plan to use it. I wouldn’t use the fp in a professional environment. Period. So maybe the better question becomes ‘which one is better in which environment?’

    Im looking into the FP myself, The image quality is indeed fantastic, but its almost TOO clean lol I have to add film grain to soften up the edges and add some grit to the look. Sometimes too smooth makes it look a little, “camcorder”. I like texture, personally with slower frame rates. Its good to know it can shoot commercial clean but im into the “film look”. Not todays film look of hyper smooth clarity.

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Same. I actually prefer the image from the FP because it DOESN’T feel as sharp or “perfect” as other mirrorless cameras on the market today - to me anyway. On the slow motion front through I totally agree. You’re forced to go down to lower bit rates to shoot in higher speed frame rates and upscaling or grading that stuff has resulted in that “digital look” you speak of. A nice, roughed-up vintage lens will help a lot of times too. That’s the main reason I tend to only use the Nikkor 35mm or the Helios 44-2 on this thing. Those lenses have produced my favorite images from this camera thus far. Interested to hear what you go with if not the fp. There are a lot of good options out there (too many lol 😂)
