Thank you! And more videos to come. My daughter was just born a few days ago so there may be a lull in tutorial content for a bit to make way for baby b-roll 🤣
These are such great sample clips and great grading, thanks! Whichever way you push the footage, whether colors or exposure, it just keeps givin'. All of these shots are really well done. I love that side light on the first one and the beach shot with the dress. You have a cinematographer's eye.
Glad you were able to play around with the sample clips! And yes, it’s kind of unbelievable how versatile the footage coming out of the fp is. I raised that shot in this video 4 STOPS with no issue. Crazy. My wife will be happy to know you like the shot of her standing on the beach lol.
@@DylColeman Oh, and thank you for uploading the original Cdng files. I've downloaded other footage to grade, but they were all compressed in Slimraw. When I tried to bring those into Photoshop, it rejected them. Your's are the first I've been able to bring into Photoshop Camera Raw, batch grade them, then batch export as jpegs and bring them into Resolve to watch as a sequence. Grading in Photoshop is amazing, but there is some nuance needed to avoid a flicker effect in the final batch video. However, the color you can extract out of the dng's in Photoshop is on a another level, almost like film quality. You're literally the only one I could find to offer the uncompressed raws and I appreciate it! Keep up the good work!
Love your channel. Your tutorials have such a cool flavor that set it apart from normal tuts out there. I’m not sure what it is but I like it! One question I do have: Why do you use glow in soft light mode? I would think it darkening the rest of the image is not a desirable result, sine you have to go back and adjust. Does it produce a nicer falloff? Or what’s the thought behind it?
I learned that trick from another TH-camr awhile back. With that blending mode you’re able to add some unique contrast into the image in addition to the glow effect. It’s hard to qualify, but whenever I turn the node with the glow effect off and on, there’s a subtle tone shift that I’ve come to love and find hard to reproduce with other tools. But it’s totally a matter of taste. I haven’t played around with the other blending modes too much but I’m sure each has their own unique benefits
Thanks! The project settings are at 1920x1080 because I'm actually grading a 12-bit 1080p clip. For the video that this clip was taken from (th-cam.com/video/kF0UU225YH0/w-d-xo.html), after I was done editing and grading I changed the project settings to 4k UHD (3840x2160) and Super-scaled everything by 2x. I render everything in Apple ProRes 422
@@serg.films99 I go over the whole process in this video. Are you referring to the A-roll of this video that was shot on the bmpcc4k? That I just CST to rec709 and do a simple grade from there.
Wow! It’s amazing you came to that conclusion! It looks really good! I have 2 questions if you can answer them: On the CST node is there a reason why you choose blackmagic pocket 4K versus other options? The same for arri log C3 vs Log C4? And my last question is why did you use the lut versus a CST to get back to REC709 gamma 2.4 or REC709-A for Mac? Thanks for this video and your answer!
Hey there! To answer your first question, I chose the Blackmagic Design color space as my CST input because that's the color space and gamma that I have selected in the RAW tab for the fp footage itself. I've also grown accustomed to it as a starting point for grading Sigma fp footage thus far. Second, I only chose Arri Log C3 because it looked a little less flat than C4. No real reasoning beyond preference there. Lastly, I chose the Arri LUT instead of another CST simply because I don't typically use LUTs in my workflow and I wanted to try it out. I guess using a CST to change from Arri Log C3 to Rec709 might provide the same result 🤔 Would be interesting to test. I'm not sure if the LUT that is in the program is a straight technical LUT or a hybrid LUT in some way. Great questions! And thanks for watching!
@@DylColeman thanks for your answer Dylan. To be specific about the Color space transform, I was asking why you pick the POCKET 4K in the list instead of other black magic « flavours ». Interesting. Didn't know that. I've some a few other creators that I respect map the HDR wheels in this way and since I'm not a colorist myself, I've emulated their process. Do you know why the option to map the wheels exists if the HDR tool is always color space aware?
Not to be a complete a-hole but the whole convert from bm to arri to a rec709 lut thing is so cringy and and over done with. Anytime I see someone doing that it tells me they have no idea what they're doing. What you're grading is literally raw data that has no gamma applied to it. You can just choose rec.709 from the raw tab (if your timeline is rec.709) and adjust exposure and saturation from there, or do those using thr hdr wheels (it's color space aware) and you'll get a better end product with only 1 node or 2.
I like the vibe on that chair while colorgrading
