      🤷🏼‍♂️ I still stand by what i’ve said from day one: Best Cinema Camera for the Price. Also i think its important to note that this channel has NEVER been sponsored nor paid by Sigma. I bought this camera and all the accessoties with my own money. Was never even talked to by Sigma until my original video on the fp hit 300K views. #neverbeboughtneverbesold

All the exposure and focus tools are fantastic and really easy to use. Ticks all the boxes for me. Really appreciate all the effort you’ve put into the fp videos. Been very informative. Thank you.

    Been using the Sigma FP for a couple of years now. it's a fantastic little camera that punches way above it's weight. I just use a good variable ND to expose correctly. It does everything I expect a good cinema camera to do, I've even matched it perfectly with Arri Alexa footage. In my opinion the footage from the FP looks way better than any Sony Camera.

    Upon your recommendation I bought the camera primarily for video. With the electronic view finder attached by thumb screw to the camera body and by adding the dark power attachment to the viewfinder I found that the EVF thumbscrew becomes inaccessible and cannot be tightened and it does come loose often enough to be a major nuisance because when loosed the external Dark matter drive becomes stops capturing. Wish there was some kind of plate to prevent this. Dark power, are you listening?

    It’t unfortunate you leave SIGMA fp. You have given alot of fp related content, which are super informative and one of reasons I bought the camera as a start up cinema entusiast. I won’t be selling mine as its use is cinema and photography is secondary. There are not many who are in the realm of Sigma fp, but I want to thank you for a rich insight of this beast of a niché camera! And you have a valid reasons to leave the camera. I hope Sigma listens to the issues the camera has. Especially higher resolution isn’t the answer for camera found its best usability, it’s the basics should be in order, before it found its best perfomance. But they did pave the way what a cinema camera can do!

    Thanks for the great videos. I do LOVE my FPL. I primarily use it for photography. I’m pretty sure the autofocus system is better on the FPL vs the Fp. (Contrast detection vs contrast + phase detection) But I completely understand your issue with banding. I use auto iso for indoor shooting so I can quickly adjust shutter speed to eliminate the banding. I do exclusively use the rear screen for viewing and always check the preview as it shows right after the shot. But for quick street photography or sports or wildlife, I understand how this might not be the ideal solution. Side note, I’m kinda shocked there isn’t a banding compensation option built into editing software like there is for vignetting.

      James, I'm with you about loving the fp for stills. I have a variety of Sigma SA-mount lenses that adapt well to it with the Sigma MC-21 SA-L adapter, and I use fully manual Pentax 645-A lenses with adapters, as well. I make my little NWPipesmoker vids with it - usually - and wish then that it had a flippy screen. But I disagree with Justin about it having no soul. I've got a Pentax 645Z with a huge mirror-box clunk, and while it has soul, I'm happy with the silence and 'no moving parts' shutter of the fp. But he's quite right - we all use our cameras uniquely.

    I’m an owner of Sigma cameras that go back to the DP1 as well as the FP and I’m also a film photographer. I love these cameras. What sigma doesn’t share with it’s customers is that their cameras are not point and shoot cameras, they must be treated like a film camera in the hands of a Cartier-Bresson type (Leica M6) photographer to get great images. Set the camera at 100 iso, set lens to f8, distance at 2 meters, hunt for good light and composition, adjust shutter speed for the desired exposure and snap, all preset. Memorize hyperfocal tables. Shutter speed gets too low, brace yourself against a wall or bring out a tripod. That’s what all the famous street photographers do. Justin, you are absolutely right about the tool has to fit your needs and this camera is not for you. Sigma is pretty arrogant about the critics. Read the reviews on the Sigma DP1 from 2008. They never listened and stubbornly continued to produce basically the same camera to this day as a new model. All that criticism and still the 2008 DP1 is my main go to camera for street photography today because it fits my style. You’re vids are great!

    • @innstikk
      @innstikk ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't agree that they are arrogant at all. Quite the opposite compared to many other companies. I don't know what issues you refer to, but their goal has always been the same with the current CEO; image quality first. The foveon sensor has physical limitations but also opportunities, and that is why I enjoy it so much. I have all variants of their dp cameras, and they have different strengths and usage. What one can see is the progress they have made over the years. I still use them together with SDs and fps. You get something different with Sigma, and that is what I like. Besides, they have always been lens manufacturer. Cameras are something they made as they could and wanted to. They are a small company and do not have resources like the other companies. Hence, they had to prioritise what to include in their cameras. I like a lot that none of my Sigma cameras need a flight mode setting f.ex.

    • @samlira9639
      @samlira9639 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@innstikk totally agree with you. I also own all the DP’s and love them. Arrogance is too strong a word, sorry. Since 2008 we’ve provided feedback thinking Sigma would make some improvements but honestly the current DP is only a higher resolution camera of the 2008 version, same review criticisms, but I like that sigma takes that position. Like you said, it’s all about the image. Sigma cameras are indeed special in the right hands. The foveon sensor in the DP’s is pure voodoo. Digital film is the best way to describe it. My FP is also amazing for stills. I have the full set of contax zeiss lenses from my film days and they’re always with my FP. I never use autofocus so sigma’s slow autofocus is not an issue for me. The color science is outstanding. The led light banding sucks, but, oh well, shit happens. Thanks Justin for all the research and tips you provided!

    • @innstikk
      @innstikk ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Sam Lira You cannot say that the dp quattro handles like the dp OG. But if you mean high iso capabilities, then that is down to physics with the unique sensor design.
      Banding with the fp due to lack of mechanical shutter can be handled. In Europe we have 50Hz current, so if you shoot at 1/100 you won't see banding. If you are in a country with 60Hz, then 1/60 should work. I'm not sure if 1/125 also works. This is also the reason we use 1/25 with 180 degrees shutter angle for filming for all cameras. I remember with BMPCC I had to shoot 1/24 at 172 indoors, not to get flicking until I realised this 😅

    • @samlira9639
      @samlira9639 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, Sigma cameras are not point and shoot.

    • @samlira9639
      @samlira9639 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sadly this thread is more about where photography is going. It’s not about the camera. People just want to push the shutter button and get an award winning photo. They don’t want to fiddle with settings. I get it. If someone wants a photo of their daughter standing next to their best friends, an iPhone is perfect. Justin shoots RED cameras so he knows to change shutter angle to deal with led flicker but he doesn’t want to deal with settings for stills. There’s a misconception that the great Magnum street photographers just pulled out their camera and pressed the shutter button. Absolutely not. They took their time. Their contact sheets have half to a whole film roll of the same shot. The actors move within their composition and minor exposure adjustments are made but it’s not point and shoot like people think.

  • @RuXTaR
    @RuXTaR ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I actually got a very good deal on my Sigma fp. I even bought it cheaper here than what it was selling on B&H back in the day even with the price drop. I'm one of maybe two in my country who bought the camera, and my photography and filmography friends still think I'm crazy for buying it. I actually enjoy the pictures I take with it. They have a different feel to them, if that makes sense. I want to treat the pictures I take with it like film, meaning, I don't want to edit. I shoot film as well, and both serve as cameras for occasions and nostalgic purpose. I know this is a weird approach, but it works for me, and I don't see myself selling my Sigma fp (not to mention nobody would buy it off of me even if I wanted).
    ALSO, I can shoot great quality raw video in places I would be told off if using a BMPCC 6K for example.

    I use electronic shutter almost exclusively on my Lumix GX8 and as such I *totally* agree with your reluctance to keep a camera without a mechanical option. Using a flash on the GX8 requires me to switch outta e-shutter & it's a bit of a hassle, but if I had an FP I wouldn't be able to do that under any circumstances.
    Hopefully we'll get some global e-shutter sensors one of these days!

    I just bump up the exposure on the client monitor and they haven't caught on yet. ;) I haven't used it for photography and probably won't. It is a straight up film (B) camera for me. It pairs nicely with my BMPCC 4K when I need a smaller rig. I'll probably hold on to it at least until BlackMagic releases a box camera or there is a new FP. I'm just not a fan of Sony cameras, even though my daily point and shoot is the ZV-1.

    Thoughts on converting all of that beautiful komodo glass (or even any Canon RF/EF glass, and beyond) on say an FX30? Super 35 is Super 35. Seems (based on your checklist) to be a perfect match. Its working for me! My point and shoot uses the same glass, gives me the same flexibility, and still has that sony auto-foc for point and shoot when I need it.... on the fly.

      probably so, i am not aware of same sensor though. I highly doubt it is, but maybe. The reason why i say doubtful is because Sony made the fp's sensor. I'm not sure if Sony is making Lumix sensors. I think Leica and Lumix are partners, so it'd be wherever Leica buys their sensors, which they are usually pretty discreet about. However, there is rumour that the M11 sensor is made by Sony...so....yea i guess Sony rules the world😆

    Wow! My Sigma sdQuattro with the Foveon sensor(a 100 ISO only sensor, upto 800 is usable in monochrome, if you intend to have studio quality images) has a much more realistic flash sync speed than the fp's. Clearly not meant for flash photography then but shocked that this was the case for the fpL too. I guess they have some costs cut to employ these as sensors..Kinda strange. Probably due to the lack of the shutter and electronic shutters not being at amazing readout levels as they're now. Overall I still have good vibes from Sigma as a company but perhaps they just can't make good modern cameras.
    I have the sdQuattro purely because of my committed decision to stick with APS-C and just needed something for studio work practice that comes closer to Medium format image quality on a lower price level. Obviously it's no GFX or PhaseOne. The sdQuattro too of course has highly restricted use parameters but the beauty of Foveon is that it never claimed or aimed to be a competition to modern cameras. Which sadly was not the case with the fp's. Also, one can make the sdQuattro a reversible IR camera with it's in built filter/dust protector and then adding a suitable filter on the lens, which I find to be really versatile without having to spend a bomb and possibly ending up with an IR only camera that will live mostly on a shelf. They do have some incredible build quality though. In the words of Mattias Burling, the Quattros feel like they're made of cast iron. Just makes you want to get out there and use it with it's trademark slowed down photography process which helps make one be more intentional with their compositions and for that the Quattro is well worth it, for me at least. My paid work cameras are Fuji's for those who may be wondering.

    I bought my FP used for a steal before I saw any of your videos, so I'm not weirdly hurt by your choice to sell yours. I also find the camera very frustrating, but not for any reasons you mentioned. I would never use an EVF with the FP and nearly double it's size. The LCD works fine and beats any BM camera I have used in daylight. I only shoot film stills so that's not an issue. And although the highlights do kinda suck, I feel they offer a nice glow even when blown out. I agree that the image looks way better when the highlights are over-protected and exposure is nailed dead center or a half stop under. The problem with the FP is its size. I understand Sigma's desire to make the smallest Full Frame camera, but that novelty becomes a double edge sword as soon as you really start using the camera. The small size is great, and one of its greatest attributes, but you need a cage, which are harder and harder to come by, to make it usable. It's still small enough, though. Then when you add the SSD, the camera becomes stupid big and since the camera only plays well with a very few drives, with the T5 not even on the market anymore, it makes the camera even more annoying. My main camera, for the past 5 years has been a 5D Mark III with ML Raw and its crazy that a hacked camera works better than the FP in most ways. I regret buying the FP almost every time I use it and am forced to attach a stupid SSD to the camera. I'm half tempted to just fork out the money for the SD cards and shoot internal 8bit 4K CDNG for a B&W delivery and really make it a niche' camera. With all that said, when you get the footage into the computer and see the image it's capable of... the annoyances disappear... until the next time I use the camera again. Rinse and repeat. A positive of the Sigma over my 5D3 is being able to use my Minolta and FD lenses, so that is a bunch of fun, especially the 35mm 1.8 I bought for next to nothing attached to a Minolta XD-11... which works as well. Another HUGE positive of the FP is the second 3200 Native ISO. For the stuff I want to make, it's a luxury. I've even had good success shooting in daylight at ISO 3200 and a variable ND. The highlights melt away to a blown glow that's strangely attractive and they can accept some color to emphasize the time of day of shooting. Anyway, I feel your pain, but I think I misinterpreted your reason for owning the FP... I thought you bought it to use for your own run and gun cinema projects where the Komodo wouldn't be a practical choice, like your single episode of Spent. I was eagerly awaiting episode 2... I really enjoyed the first episode and feel you captured a grittiness akin to the Bosch series on Amazon Prime. Oh well. Good luck. I think a bunch of your subscribers may have been here due to the FP coverage.

Delineating the cdng files as BM Film in Resolve's Raw Tab, clicking Highlight Recovery and then with a few simple corrections (LUT or basic tools) and the image looks great. Meh, to each their own. It was nice to have you in the FP fam for a short period of time. It is an extremely niche camera. It ain’t for everyone. ✌🏻
    Now you know you couldn’t post this and not get friendly heat from me. I will say if photography is your jam for this camera, you chose an a7siii as you street photo camera? Prints on that should be fun. I know you have something else cooking, but you know I had to give you shit. ❤
    I do think the banding is crazy at time, I always adjust the shutter to compensate. On top of that the AF is just terrible, there is no solution😂 the FP L is slightly better but still bad.
    I will absolutely disagree with the “no soul” comment. I think these cameras have to most soul in the hands of someone that is willing to work around the quirks.

    This is a great and informative video. Bummed that you are no longer an owner simply because you won’t be creating anymore FP content.
    I also primarily shoot still photography and shoot tiny shorts ~30s. I have owned sigmas before (I really like their color science and the Merrill DP2 was one of my most fun cameras of all time) as a result I always set the EV to under expose and I almost always have an ND filter on the lens. After watching this video I became curious about the banding complaint as this is an issue often with electronic shutters.
    I usually shoot in aperture priority with auto iso within set range, and mostly manual focus vintage or converted lenses. I have never noticed any banding, your video made me curious so I poured through 100s of additional photos; low light, high light, indoors and outdoors, tripod no tripod, bursts, and interval timed exposures. I couldn’t find any photos with banding; and I really looked sometimes even allowing myself to follow a shadow and try and convince myself there was some banding.
    Has anyone else not had any banding issues? I wonder if this is a camera sensor issue affecting batches of cameras or if there is something about the way I shoot and my settings that has prevented banding.

    I’ve been shooting for over 50 years. I have 10 cameras and 25 lenses. I have my grandmother’s cameras, and she was born in 1898. I have my mother’s cameras. In addition to my current kit, I bought a Minolta SRT 101 in 1972 with a Rokkor lens, an SX-70 in 1974, an F3HP in 1984 and a bunch of other cameras in between and since. I was walking the streets of Manhattan and buying cameras in NYC before B&H was in existence.I bought a Leica S007 from Samy’s in 2016. I still have my original Minilux from 1998. I currently have a 7ii and an H2F. And I have an fp which is quite good for stills. I am shooting it with Leica and Voigtlander glass. It is clearly not my only camera as I know its limitations, but it is easily capable of outperforming my SL2-S. Do I own or wish to have a Sony? Nope. The moral is: you have to have a lot of cameras and lenses to get the shot.

And when the « guru » moves forward, they feel betrayed. As you said, camera are just tools. We should be interested in the images and not the tools. Watching you leaving the fp is useful : it’s another piece of information for your audience, that the fp is not perfect and that sometimes you have to drop it. But every real cinematographer and DP knows that and does that. They are not married to camera. They married to their images. Asking someone to stick to a piece of gear is seriously misunderstanding the artistic process. Continue with the great channel Justin.

    I bought this camera knowing most of the drawbacks you mention✅ for £1350 in pristine condition. I intend to use it only as a travel companion for landscape using my L mount lenses as the SL2-S is too big to hump around Japan on trains etc. Waiting for the Laowa auto focus 10mm to hit the shops next week and then hopefully I fill the landscape gap left by my Q3 (which comes as well for street and EDC). The sigma will do focus bracketing and ISO6 ND shots so a nice small package for most landscape and architecture needs. Not getting the EVF it’s a waste of time going for the LCD viewer (collapsible) another space saver. @luCianZe ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yo @@JustinPhillip wanted to reply a bit about the flickering issue. After research, I compared the sigma fp-L with a phase one IQ4. I did that because IQ`s don't have a mechanical shutter and they are the best digital backs in still image for decades. Guess what? It flickers, it's dead silent, it deforms fast objects and it costs from 15.000 to 51.000 dollars (how much was your RED Komodo? :))) ) depending on how much resolution you want to have (max is 150). They have indeed a anti-flickering software option that changes either 50Hz or 60Hz, depending on the bulb at what Hz works it solves the problem. It's in their manual.
      Considering that... sigma fp, fp-L remains a solid still camera design for still images and not for street - sports, candid photography as photo-hobby people want to think (yep your in that pool too, you got the "cine" right but got the "still" wrong). The still mode on the sigma is for high-end photography witch by the way it's the same as the cine mode, it's an advanced entry lvl camera for film makers that is not for everyone.
      Your style of photography doesn't match up with the technical aspects of the camera that implies to make photography. Don't get angry you`re still a good cine dude! The issue ... is not actually an issue, that's the way a electronic shutter (bayer sensor) works and probably they will introduce a firmware update to have Hz options to solve it if they can, or at the next camera iteration they will put the foveon sensor.

    Great review. I really want to like the FP but the banding and highlight issues are just unacceptable to me, especially as someone who shoots alot indoors and at night with artificial lighting. I would live to rig this camera out with the LVF11 and hand grip and stuff as it feels almost like a super8 or hassy or something with those attachments but it's not gonna be worth the money if a lot of the shots are coming out like that.
    Maybe a sigma fp L 2 is on the horizon in 2024 where perhaps they fix the readout speed and improve how the sensor handles highlights. If they can correct those issues to the point where banding, exposure latitude, and rolling shutter are for the most part no longer an issue, then I would definitely buy this camera. As it stands now though I'd rather look more into GFX despite it being much larger, these issues are non existent. There are also a lot more high megapixel full frame cameras hitting the market with mechanical shutters.

    I shot a band on tour and took my FP and the CL (both L mount). Shooting the band during the day and at soundcheck the FP images smoked the Leica. I shot the whole first show using the FP, using a wide range of shutter speeds snd apertures and every shot was unusable due to heavy banding. I had to shoot the rest of the tour on the CL .

But during the show the lights were apparently much stronger, changing in intensity all the time. I had very little or no banding from the soundcheck and every image from the show exhibited very obvious and strong banding. I think you would like the a7c for photography, but it only has electronic shutter. Also, the a7c mark 2 is rumored for this year.

    Fashions change in photography about what technical artifact "look" is cool and in vogue. Clearly to you the rolling shutter appearance is now a big a no-no, cheapened I suspect by its appearance in all cell phone photography, but there was a time in the early days of SLR's, and the appearance of the Nikons in professional photography, that the bending artifacts of the then new-fangled top to bottom moving metal focal plane shutter were used to great visual effects to accentuate "speed" by "cutting edge" photographers in premier publishing venues like Life magazine and National Geographic...

    if not for those highlights this was the one...
    why I thought this was the one is because that large dynamic range - one would expect nice highlights...
    I want 4k, best dynamic range, something that can be brought with me when hiking for a week. I have strong legs, some extra weight can be considered, why nothing fit the billllll????

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The color science is fantastic. But unless you really monitor that exposure, in my experience the highlight detail is not retained nearly as good as on other modern digital cinema cameras. But even an a7Siii can hold the highlights better than the fp. Dont tell the Sigma fanboys tho, they are blinded by their own delusions

    Thanks for sharing your history with the Sigma Justin. I snagged an Fp L for a killer deal and love it but yes, the banding is a problem. All still images in this were shot with the Fp L using an Aivascope at night and the banding is very obvious - th-cam.com/video/rQDCKl1DgE8/w-d-xo.html

    If you’re wanting a stills camera for “street photography” do yourself a favour and don’t buy a Leica M (film or digital) They’re not worth the money, the glass is great, but not the bodies for the price. If you don’t want to worry about blown highlights shoot film. If you’re wanting a rangefinder buy a Leica/Minolta CL or Voigtlander Bessa and spend the money on good glass. Personally I would just get an X100.
    If you’re “worried” about crop sensors and not being FF, that’s a myth. Cinematographer Steve Yedlin has a great website, his article on matching lens blur on different formats is very enlightening. He’s also written others about the hype of FF.

    Not to be negative, but the way you fall in love with things just to find out you don't like them (vintage lenses, then cinema lenses, then AF) is very mercurial and for the lack of a better word, feels unpredictable. I love your energy and positivity, in some ways your videos and presence are much more enjoyable than many other youtubers. On the other hand, I've learned to hold some reservations when you get extremely excited about things. Sorry not trying to rain on your parade
