    Good grade. Another fun way of changing the workflow is setting up the color management in a different way. In the Raw settings, set colorspace to 2020 and gamma to linear. Then, the first node use a CST and convert to and colorspace you like to use, I normally go to Arri LogC. From there you can use a similar workflow as you used in the video. What this ultimately does is provide a cleaner tone map from the RAW to Arri colorspace. Rather than deal with Blackmagic gamma and color, you can use a more tried and true grading space. I use this on my FS7 RAW footage, and it works quite nicely.
    The Sigma never fails to impress with the depth of the colors and tonality.

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m gonna try that! I’ve been messing around with Arri log c but haven’t tried the first color management step. Thanks for the tip!

      “In the Raw settings, set colorspace to 2020 and gamma to linear”.
      Hi, Mason Hunsicker, could you, please, direct me where I can exactly choose Rec.2020 colorspace and Linear gamma separately? Is it in the Project Settings window under the Color Management tab or is it under the Camera Raw tab?
      Thank you!

      @@semmussaev under the raw settings when using clip, change color to P3 and gamma to linear. The way you do it is just as good as well. I find using the linear setting more capable when using DNG raw. Using the CST to change into any colorspace after that tends to respond pretty well.
      I will say, after test grading with your clips you posted, I'm insanely impressed with the shadow retention and capabilities of the camera.

      I feel you. The teal/orange look has been really "hot" for the last couple years. And I love it too in the right situations, but I think a lot of that is lighting for it instead of trying to force it in the grade. For me, nothing beats a nice natural grade.

      You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching 🙏🏾 to answer your question, I upscale my footage using the super scale feature in DaVinci Resolve. I set the scaling to “2x,” the sharpness to “medium” and the noise reduction to “low”. Shooting slow motion on the fp isn’t great, but you can shoot a few different high-speed framerates like 60p and 100p in 10-bit RAW, but ONLY in HD (1920x1080). 10bit is much better than nothing and scales up to 4k pretty nicely in Resolve

    This is a very good tutorial, it is really the first time I am happy with my color correction. For my portfolio, I wanted to add new shots, but because I don't have a camera, at least not yet, because most of the time I use footage from someone else (I'm a compositor). So I had to film it with my phone. Now, I got a new phone and it has a RAW option, when it came out I saw it was a DNF file instead of my usual exr file and acescg color space, so I was really confused. After searching the whole day on how to use DNF and what pipeline I should use, I came across your video. This was a 2 in 1 video because I needed to know how to work with DNF, and I always wanted to know how to properly color correct. Most TH-camrs always forget about things like color space, but you went over it very slow and detailed, thanks a lot! You got my like and your video is going in one of my compositing playlists :) .

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there! It depends on the LUT, specifically what input the LUT is expecting. I would always place it at the end of the node tree but if it’s a LUT that is made for a REC709 color space input it would go after the CST node. Most of the time, though, I’m using one or the other. I’ve made a few custom LUTs that are hybrid and perform both a color space transform AND some creative adjustments, so in those cases it’s just the LUT and it’s placed all the way at the end just like the CST node

    Hey Dylan, Thanks for the video. I recently purchased this camera and now need am trying to decide whether to get a Mac Studio or PC. What do you suggest is the best way to go to edit the Sigma FP

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! So, I edit my Sigma fp footage in DaVinci Resolve on a 2019 Macbook Pro, the ones that were around just before the M1 chips came out (😖). It does the job pretty well with a 64 GB DDR4 RAM and a AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB graphics card, but there's room for improvement in terms of its performance in handling large 4k cDNG projects. If there's a lot of footage in one project, I typically have to create proxies so that I can assemble and edit smoothly. On smaller projects I don't for some reason, but I always edit in a 1920x1080 timeline until I'm ready to export, then I switch the project over to 4k UHD, render and finish. This makes Resolve a lot faster during the "heavy lifting" portions of an edit. To answer your question though, I think you'll be fine either way. I don't have a lot of experience with PCs but, from what I hear, you get more bang for your buck. Apple is expensive cause it's Apple. I use them cause I love their products, but I'm considering getting a powerful desktop workstation soon and definitely not ruling out PC options.

    question! i'm learning resolve in order to make my full switch this year from premire. specifically for the sigma fp, why do you choose to use the blackmagic color space? is it because you shot in blackmagic braw? i was thinking that was diffrent than cdng. or is using the blackmagic color space just a personal, aestheic choice for you that you think looks best? if so, could this be said the same for all color spaces? if someone shoots cdng could they switch to any other color space like arri or red if they think it looks good to them or a good starting place like you do? and have this choice not be a wrong way to do it since its uncompressed cgng raw?

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! Yeah it's just a personal choice. I'm selecting the Blackmagic Design color space and gamma in the RAW tab to regain a lot of the dynamic range in the cinemaDNG clip, so it made sense to me to use that as a starting point to then color space transform into Rec709 during the grade. You don't get many color space options in the RAW tab and the default one - Rec709, sRGB - looks pretty terrible. I've seen a lot of people throwing it into an Arri color space after making the Camera RAW tab adjustments (I assume) with great results. There's a great Arri to Rec709 LUT inside of Resolve that works well if you color space transform into Arri LogC first. I've been experimenting with it some lately.

      Shooting 2 stops under means to first expose normally and then close the aperture by two stops after that before recording. So if the image is properly exposed at f/2.8, then I would close down to f/5.6 and then shoot, all to save the highlights from possibly blowing out

    Can you shoot log with this cam!? - I hear you have to monitor the image via the bakes in ‘video like’ profile. Thanks

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It shoots raw cinemaDNG video - which has a very flat log-like look, with the option to bake in a color profile (which I never do). I always leave my color profile setting to “off” and color space transform to rec709 in Post. I actually don’t do that much work in color for the fp anymore. Now my process is even simpler than it was in this video

    Are you still shooting with and recommending the fp?

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I still shoot with it. There are times when it feels dated. Whether I recommend it or not depends on what you need. I don’t think it will be enough for most. The image is great but it’s not an easy workflow

      @@DylColeman thanks I was kinda thinking the same. I already have a s5ii. The interesting sigma piece for me. It’s that sigma has been pumping out apsc L mount lenses. For a camera that does not exist. I wonder if sigma is releasing a apsc camera of sorts soon. I’m in FL too Pasco county

    My sigma fp dng files are very less saturated on DaVinci resolve viewport. Is there any fix?

      Hey there. Is that after you apply the Rec.709 color space transform node or just without any correction at all?

    Hello, thanks for the video. Which lens did you use in the [000001-000512].DNG, [000027-000384].DNG and T005_014_20221011_ file?

      Hey there! For the T005 clip and all other clips that I provided I used the Nikkor 35mm f/2 vintage lens. Fantastic piece of glass

      @@DylColeman Thanks for your reply! I have a question about the Sigma fp. Is it possible to load in the camera a LUT to preview it while you are shooting in RAW dng? I was checking the manual, but I can't find .

    В каком качестве вы делаете проект а в каком выводите готовую версию? С сигмы фп

      I shot everything in 12-bit 4k UHD and also in 10-bit HD for the 100 fps slow motion. I edited mostly in a 1920x1080 timeline until I got close to export, then I switched to 3840x2160 before exporting.

      my project settings were 1920x1080 until was ready to export. The nice thing about Resolve is that sizing up is easy and doesn't take any extra conversion steps 👍🏾
