I fell in love with the Sigma fp for almost two years now but I've been struggling to find the perfect "rig" for it every since. The fp lacks a lot of the frills of modern cameras bodies, so it's always needed a few additions to really make it a practical go-to option for casual everyday video capture. In this video, I explain what I look for in a perfect everyday carry rig for the Sigma fp, all the iterations I've gone through along the way in my pursuit of "perfection" and finally, I'll tell you about the one piece of gear that's helped me arrive at my favorite handheld setup for the fp to-date after over a year and a half of tinkering.
Special thanks to mxginc_ for helping shoot some of the b-roll, and as always huge thanks to my beautiful wife, Stephanie, for being my muse and letting me litter the apartment with camera gear for weeks on end.

OK, I will buy FP
I don't know anything about cameras and to be honest I'm not really interested in them. Just wanted to say that I found the video editing/style amazing! Very professional!
I lvoe u:) thanks
Method #2 sounds wonderful & I'm still trying to get the process to sink into my brain. On the codec issue, I'm mainly using pre-existing video, not raw camera footage. Does that make a difference on whether using Timelines or Method 2 to edit is safer? I'm not spending a lot of time in the Color page on grades or more complicated lighting fx (yet) so wanted to be sure...thanks! * *new sub* *
Hey there! Thanks for the sub. The type of footage that you're working doesn't really affect which method you would use, I just like Method 2 because it also saves all those stills and groupings on the Color page. If you're not doing a lot of Color then media managing by Timeline should work fine for you. That's the method I used for a while until I tried out the other way
You made me laugh))) I shoot on 4TB disks every day and I wouldn't buy such a piece of iron, I think it's a dead end for development for a number of objective reasons. Sorry if this doesn't coincide with your opinion.
No need to apologize

Very nice, but does it only fit that enclosure? I cannot buy it from Amazon and having problems finding it.
I like it, but I like to see more on the plate.

Intangibles? Did you mean 'tangible'? What you explained are TANGIBLE qualities. Tangible means: Perception by touch, experience. Maybe it was a slip of the tongue. (Or, maybe I don't know my definitions - which is often the case). Love your content, by the way.
I was speaking more to the feeling I get when I do those things rather than the things themselves, if that makes sense.
This is awesome!
I can feel your love for the FP from the video :) I also own a FP :)
Then you already know! Hard NOT to love it 😍
Your love for this camera is really infectious, I'm glad to hear it makes you so happy!!
It really does. Glad to hear to can feel the love through the video 🥰
I have no problem with the Dark Lab solution but will order this for my 2nd fp body. Love your enthusiasm.
Thanks! I’m glad it comes through 😊
This is awesome! Glad to see the FP still evolving.
I’ll never stop loving this little beauty. I honestly can’t believe the community is still going so strong after 5 years!
and I get to be the 52nd like. Classy presentation as always.
Thanks so much! Really glad you enjoyed it
lovely shot! I wish I could be a Dad one day, and do some catch ball by the lake with my son:)
Thanks! I can’t wait until I can do exactly that with my little girl 🥰
That Niceyrig side handle is my favorite item for the FP I actually built an entire rig around it using various Kondor Blue accessories.
Awesome! Would love to hear more about your rig.
@DylColeman I can upload a video on my channel in the coming weeks. I could tag you in the description so you can see it. I primarily make use of the SanDisk Pro-Blade and Kondor Blue Pro-Blade Handle. The rig isn't totally complete. I'm still trying to find the right monitor, and I'm also planning on getting the new Lumix 28-200mm Zoom lens.
That really seems to be the perfect compact rig for my favourite camera. Thank you for sharing! And you could probably mount it inside a bigger rig, if you need a monitor and an external battery. I only wish 52weeks would make that SSD plate for the Silverstone MS12 enclosure, as that performed the best in my tests and 20 Gbit/s helps with offloading speeds. But maybe I could 3d print one. Btw, do you use an ND filter for your rig? On my big Sigma FP rig, I use the Tilta mattebox, but that alone is bigger than your rig. Any recommendations? Or do you just work without one?
Hey there! I do use an ND filter. I use this one from K&F concept - amzn.to/3A4kDFO. I'm also a fan of the Tilta mini matte box, but to try keep this everyday rig small I just use a lens hood whenever possible
@@DylColeman Thanks! I will check that one out. One more question about the Niceyrig handle: You called it a rubber material, but the product site says it's leather. Can you confirm weather it's genuine leather or faux leather/rubber?
@@saschathiede you’re correct, it’s leather. My mistake.
I went through almost the same process trying to implement an external SSD, and ultimately embraced the FP as a 1080p camera. I had the idea for a bracket plate for the SSD, but couldn't find one fine-tailored to the FP until this video! I'll have to check this out.
The struggle is real! My journey has been very similar and I honestly gave up hope until 52 weeks reached out to me. Really glad they did, cause their product is awesome. Let me know how it works out for you if you end up getting one
once you have sigma fp like me, you always find a better rigging way. Thank you for the content and efford you give for our unpopular camera.
You're very welcome! I prefer to call it "esoteric" instead of "unpopular". Sounds fancier 🤣
IF I was a Simga Fp shooter, you would have made my day!! Nice upgrades!!!
Never too late to join the fp family 😉
how many minutes can this ssd drive record without stopping, in 4k 12 bit dng?
Not sure. I wasn't doing any super long takes when I tested it out in England, but I was able to roll for over a minute without issue. Maybe even a couple at the longest. Will have to do a longer test 🤔
I did some thorough testing on this, although not with that enclosure and drive in particular. The gist is that recording in 4K 12bit 29.97 FPS does not seem to be an issue with most drives and enclosures. For >15 minutes it didn't cause me any problems, I probably tested even for much longer, but I haven't documented that. The real challenge is FHD 12 bit 100 FPS, as that fails on most drives and enclosures just after seconds, but I was able to make even that work for more than 15 minutes. Generally, drives with lower power consumption or gen 3 drives seem to perform much better on this, but the enclosure plays also a huge role. Technically, there should be a record limit around 70 minutes, if I'm not mistaken, but I've made recordings much longer than that, but only in 10 bit, to save drive space. Hope that helps! Let me know if you need any additional data. :)
@@saschathiede very grateful for the answer! yes, your knowledge would be very useful to me, is there any way to contact you, for example in a telegram? or whatever is convenient for you
INSTANT purchase, this is indeed the missing link for us wacky fp users. 😅 Cheers!

Walla! I think I can finally get rid of my sticky velcros!! Thabks man
Yes! Say goodbye to sticky messes! As someone who started with velcro, I can say that is much better option for sure 😂 Thanks for watching!
Is this item shipping to UK as well?
what a sweeeet gift to the FP community!
For real! Love this product. Can't wait to see what else they come up with
Looks good. I ordered everything of your links.
Nice! Definitely let me know how everything works out for you
@@DylColemaneverything came in. The adapter works great, but it has two problems. It doesn’t have a tripod socket on the bottom, so there is no way to mount it on a regular tripod. It does have a built in arca Swiss mount, but it is mounted sideways, so when I mount the camera on my video head that is arca Swiss compatible, the camera points to the side instead of straight ahead. So basically, I have no way to mount it on my tripod. I guess I have to see if I can get some kind of 90 degree arca Swiss adapter, so I can mount the camera on my tripod so it points straight ahead. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining, but I rather have a tripod socket instead of an arca Swiss plate that is pointing the wrong direction. If I was him, I would make the same hard drive housing, but ditch the arca Swiss plate, and put a tripod socket on it. He has the right idea with mounting the hard drive on the bottom, it makes for a nice, low profile setup.
Can the Arca Swiss Bottom plate be mounted on top of a gimbal?
With the 1/4 20 attachment point I imagine you could mount it somewhere on a cage so that you could fix the fp on the gimbal as well, but I haven't tried. Would be an interesting setup for sure
@@DylColeman Thanks for the prompt reply! And yes, it would be a cool setup, but will probably require use a focus puller too. But the bottom plate sure looks like a great solution for handheld work. Thanks for sharing! Hopefully the SSD wouldn’t overheat much.
@@ArunWadhwa yeah, it’s a perfect minimalist solution for everyday walk around shooting for sure. I’m loving it

What is recommended for saving other collateral used in the project but not in the timeliness, such as the PowerPoint file you exported PNGs to use in the timeline? Same for .text files of notes, voice over scripts, etc? Every archive feature picks all the used media up and leaves all the non-timeline files behind, like a scene from a Left Behind movie.
Good question. I personally do a lot of my pre-production and organization for projects in apps like Milanote, so that's what I use to keep track of other assets not used in the NLE. It may just be a necessary step to gather those assets and save them in the same place you put your media managed assets when the project is finished. What have you done in the past?
@@DylColeman I'm just copying the extras into a folder along with the media folder. I want it all in one spot for the future, in case I need to resurrect a project and modify it. Unfortunately, Resolve doesn't recognize collateral and will leave it behind when archiving. I've decided to just copy my entire project folder structure up to an archive location with a single click/drag. It includes all media, the output rendering in an 'output' subfolder, my 'extras' subfolder with non-timeline items such as PPTs, PDF, TXTs, etc, and an empty 'project' subfolder. Before moving, I also copy any Fairlight audio clips from its location into the 'media' subfolder and relink them. Then I export the project .drp file to the empty 'project' subfolder. This way, the ENTIRE project is bundled under my top-level project folder. In the future, I can copy/paste the whole folder tree back onto my laptop and just relink the media and start working again.
This might come across harsh but it is meant as constructive criticism: Let's say I read the title and then clicked. The video is 6:40 or exactly 400 seconds. After about 1:40 or exactly 1/4 of the video I have not gotten a single piece of additional information the title didn't provide. The next segment is mostly a mixture of specs, sigma PR text and B-roll. Now that we have passed the 50% mark of the video comes the sample footage, just about 30 seconds of fast cuts between the two lenses, never enough to really look after details in the shot and none of it in challenging conditions. Up next: less than 15 seconds of 1:1 comparison shots and another 15 seconds playing during the verdict. THIS! THOSE 30 SECONDS is what I wanted to see more of. That is the -> vs <- part, the actual comparison. Unfortunately those 30 seconds of footage is also all filmed indoors with soft lighting. So there wouldn't be a way to see a difference between any two lenses unless one was straight up broken. ..... If you were looking for a comparison between two lenses, do you think you would be happy watching your own video? Do you think you'd feel good having spent the time for it? Do you think you would feel well informed after watching it?
Appreciate the feedback. I'm always looking for ways to improve the content I make and honestly, very specific criticism like this is quite helpful. I've been working on "getting to the point" in my videos and adding value while still trying to inject some personal insight and storytelling. That being said, thanks for watching.
HDR wheels are color space aware
Interesting. Didn't know that. I've some a few other creators that I respect map the HDR wheels in this way and since I'm not a colorist myself, I've emulated their process. Do you know why the option to map the wheels exists if the HDR tool is always color space aware?
I'm glad we didn't get the Zoom™ moments for the week. Lovely moments!
I own the 28-70mm and its my go to lens. I love it
Very nice shots bro 😎
Thanks, brother!
Cherish these days, mate, they’re irreplaceable! Looking forward to the breakdown.
Yes please for the breakdown! it's the most compact rig I have ever seen! Eager to know what is the SSD solution you attach at the bottom and if this could be mounted on a Gimbal or even if you could attach a monitor above :) . Great man!
Will definitely be talking all about that SSD solution (the star of the rig) in the next vid.
