One of my biggest problems with rap is exclusion of real drums. Who the fuck in their right mind doesn't groove to this. There are so many nasty drummers out there who can add another dimension to rap, instead of just sampling beats.
JD Beck sent me here from his interview with Sarah Hagan - this is soooooooo sick !! finally finding artists that are the sauce !! You inspire me ! Thank you for your music and influence you have had on the world! Peace !
Chris Dave you simultaneously make me want to practice drums every day for the rest of my life, but also make me never want to play again because I'll never make sounds as good as that. You god damn talented man
Who cares? I bet you've played drum parts that Chris would never even think of to play. Everybody has a unique touch and feel. Personally I love listening to inexperienced people play my drums, to me its art if they can manage to express themselves with the instrument. However sloppy or simple it may be. Comparing myself to drummers never did any good for my playing. Its liberating to not strive to be the best but rather strive to be yourself.
I’m a Drummer, I’ve played and listened two great drummers my entire life. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Stewart Copeland Etc. until I heard you!!! Your playing is PERFECTION! Thanks!!!!
@@wukong1066I've listened to the greats you've mentioned here and then some. but this cat Chris "Daddy" Dave is on another level Bro... His drum play is magnificent!
bro, i love the placement of beats. pocket when you want pocket but distortion of all the transitions at the beginning is clear enough to understand. you see the big picture well.
My favorite drummer dude!!! Nonstop since the nineties and still giving the business! Creativity is always on another planet..... Would love to hear you do another track wit da Mint Factory one more time!
His left hand was just playing double the speed of his right hand, making them 32nd notes. After he does those 32nd doubles his left hand just ghosts along with the right hand 16ths
They would be 32nd notes if they were played on top of the beat. But they're closer from being swung. Any of this doesn't matter. The end result: he had a musical idea and successfully executed.
@drummeroulis93 They're owned by Steve Badalament, owner of Innovation Drums... my best recollection... main snare: 5x14" '60s Keystone-era Ludwig Supraphonic with die-cast hoops; bass drum: 20" '57 Sparkle Blue Gretsch; rack snare: 12x14" marching snare; floor snare: 6.5x14" Tama? Maple. The other two piccolos I can't recall. The cymbals are Chris' Sabian Signature series raw/unlathed... 17" hats; 21"? crash with a sizzle chain, stacked 21" crash/ozone; 20" crash/ride; spiral cymbal w/ rivets.
@JOHNSIBAYAN07 99% of what you're hearing is expert tuning, muffling and playing. As for the mics; nothing fancy -Samson 7kit (bass, 4-snares, 2 overhead), I augmented the kit with an APEX 460 wide diaphragm condenser in the shoulder position and a Sennheiser e609 Silver dynamic on the hats. I snaked to a Presonus Firestudio Tube, then Firewire 400 to Chris' Mac running Logic Pro. I ran the shoulder and bass drum mics though the tube preamp channels on the Presonus. Thank you for the kind words.
Coming from the guy who has no groove, one dimension playing. All about blast beats and double pedal. How can you diss this guy? I'd like to see you play some of the slugged behind the beat grooves that this guy plays
there are plenty of ways. He could have a shell made of special material, or have a special snare chain on the bottom, or even a very high tension head on. Or all of the above.
@Xolin11 LOL we all have people who inspire us to find our own voices. Not sure why you wish that were not the case, but it's a GOOD thing to have influences. It's only bad when you don't discover your own voice. Clearly, Dave has his own voice, his own approach, and he has become a serious influence to many.
wow you've inspired I bredren. Come check my channel and give me some tips. Your hand technique is jaw dropping. The single stroke rolls you were doing im still trying to wrap my head around when are you striking and when are you using the bounce of your stick... amazing
Sounds like he stuffed it, indeed. Looks like an old Ludwig Supraphonic with die-cast hoops, not sure. Also sounds like the head is tuned way high and there's very little snare tension. Either way, I love his snare sound.
thats what is looks and sounds like. The paradiddle is probly my favorite rudiment. Well it WAS until I saw this video. Now I feel like I need to practice more.
Wait.... Has anybody noticed that at 0:59 you hear a groove on a snare, but if you look at his sticks, you see they don't make any contact with one of his snares?
good point. Just usually for marching bands, technique is very, very strict, not so much for drum set... which really explains alot of drumset players today
This more than anything else should motivate us to stay unique as drummers... There is only one Chris Daddy Dave! The Legend! BOOM! Much Love and Respect Jstar*Zacheus
@JOHNSIBAYAN07 I also want to mention that the musical instruments were excellent. The vintage drum collection was provided by Steve Baldalament, owner of Innovation Drum (innovationdrums). Chris' Signature line of Sabian cymbals sounded absolutely incredible and were beautiful to behold. Great video crew and management. And last but not least, Chris was one of the most kind, intelligent, funny and friendly guys you can ever hope to meet. -Cort

808s hit harder than this sometimes 🤷🏽♂️
Why the fuck this video and the audio of the pt. 2 is unavailable? Damn those corporate bastards and all theur copyright shit.
while there is kanye west lol
wYc7T jmf go to drummerworld.com it's under Chris Dave there
You cannot deny the coolness of a drummer who uses 4-5 snares "because I like snares and how they sound". Period.
JD Beck sent me here from his interview with Sarah Hagan - this is soooooooo sick !! finally finding artists that are the sauce !! You inspire me ! Thank you for your music and influence you have had on the world!
Peace !
the first song is mysterons by portishead
Do u have a playlist i could indulge in?
I think the term was "I have a fetish for snare drums" hahaha =)
Chris Dave you simultaneously make me want to practice drums every day for the rest of my life, but also make me never want to play again because I'll never make sounds as good as that. You god damn talented man
Truth 😩
he's been playing since he was like 4 and he's now 45 so 41 years of playing so don't feel bad haha
Who cares? I bet you've played drum parts that Chris would never even think of to play. Everybody has a unique touch and feel.
Personally I love listening to inexperienced people play my drums, to me its art if they can manage to express themselves with the instrument. However sloppy or simple it may be.

Brother I hope you’re still playing. Chris Dave would tell you to make the best sounds that *you* can…to find your own! You’ll be alright 🙂
I’m a Drummer, I’ve played and listened two great drummers my entire life. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Stewart Copeland Etc. until I heard you!!! Your playing is PERFECTION! Thanks!!!!
Art Blakey, Max Roach, Danny Richmond...

Gotta love me some Portishead especially the sick beats this guy is smothering all over it without ruining the vibe. Can you say "ill"?
this makes me want to put down my guitar and become a drummer
He makes me want to put down my drums and become a guitarist though lol
Haha this is amazing
I did....
I'm picking it back up though:)
Do it
How the hell did he get his main snare sound to sound like that :D
I can never listen to the Portishead song on its own again.
The first break he plays is incredible.
Why haven’t we gotten any new videos like this????
bob james- nautilus :)
@holygroove2
Portishead - Mysterons
The second song is Bob James - Nautilus
bro, i love the placement of beats. pocket when you want pocket but distortion of all the transitions at the beginning is clear enough to understand. you see the big picture well.
My favorite drummer dude!!! Nonstop since the nineties and still giving the business! Creativity is always on another planet..... Would love to hear you do another track wit da Mint Factory one more time!
He instantly became one of my favourites. Get his free album!
mindblowingly technically brilliant - and also soulful.
Which songs did he use in this medley?
When Chris Dave is playing coherently, it's some of the best ever. Then again, I wish I could even halfway goof around on my drums like he does.
the drums on the backing track should not be there in the first place...they're definitely too loud.
+ClamsAnonymous nah man, chris is just a musically dude he doesnt push himself too much.. (i totally dig him being humble with that drumming tho)
Fuck you. Chris is Chris.
I wish there was a version out of this without the drums that you could practice to. So in love with the groove in this.
Sooooo digging the syncopated ending at the end of this video. Believe it or not it stays in the timing of the song. HOT! lol
Awesome. I love his cymbal selection. I need a pair of those hats.
Awesome Chris Dave is the skilled excellent drummer but versatile who can play jazzy, bluesy, heavy metal rock, new wave techno etc. 👍
1:51 gets me EVERY TIME!
+Xavier Leeds sextuplets in his left hand, and 16th notes in his right hand, and at that tempo??!?!! the dude is a freak
he wasnt playing sextuplets sorry
No need to apologize for having an opinion brah. He definitely wasn't thinking sextuplets, but he was playing sextuplets.
His left hand was just playing double the speed of his right hand, making them 32nd notes. After he does those 32nd doubles his left hand just ghosts along with the right hand 16ths

just heard of this guy, hoping i could find a modern day Benard Purdie. Guess the search continues. Music is flat and lame for the last 20+yrs
Coming from the guy who has no groove, one dimension playing. All about blast beats and double pedal. How can you diss this guy? I'd like to see you play some of the slugged behind the beat grooves that this guy plays

Liked the second part but the the first part was annoying, definitely has skill , no doubt
The Best Ride I ever did ave ?!
0:48 to 1:00 is just jaw-droppingly amazing...

Do someone know anything about dem hihats?
I know about the crack cymbal stuff etc., but do someone know the which cymbals are used?
never gets old.
you can't possibly be serious! who would take a drum that nice and stuff it with anything, let alone chris daddy dave!? really??
Sounds like he stuffed it, indeed. Looks like an old Ludwig Supraphonic with die-cast hoops, not sure. Also sounds like the head is tuned way high and there's very little snare tension. Either way, I love his snare sound.

It's in the original song that is in the backing track. It's by Portishead, I can't remember what it's called.
yeah!!! Bob James' Nautilus @ 01:14
Chris' style truly is sumthin else 8P
thanks for this channel, peace out.

one of my top five favorite drummers.
What is the first song he plays with the woman vocalist? I wish that he actually did the recording on the original track because that would be killin!
well actually its Portishead - Mysterons, prince paul sampled this amazing track
theyre prototypes.
you will not find another like them.
closest thing you would find imo would be sabians fierce hats or zildjian remix hats
you can get a lot of different snare sounds with differens woods and tensions. that or hes doing really fast tight rim shots.
what's the first tune? reminds me of Juli by Super Nova from the notorious Vienna Scientists compilations
This more than anything else should motivate us to stay unique as drummers... There is only one Chris Daddy Dave! The Legend! BOOM!
Much Love and Respect
Jstar*Zacheus
Chris you're INSANE, so much musicality... Thank you for everything dude !
that sample at 1.14 where have i listened it??? th-cam.com/video/ViHmnR4OXUc/w-d-xo.htmlm14s
It’s only natural a man with more than 1 first name would have more than 1 snare
Question: What is this? Response: It's a drummer? Answer: No, It's a system. It can attack both fast and strong!
and the voice imh says: practise those rolls... and be conscious about it.
He is quotes as saying that he hates the way he sounds on toms, so I guess it's a legitimate option haha!
Every single drum in his kit except the bass drum is a snare, actually. so, a snare where every tom goes.
Can anyone suggest some more music similar to either of these tracks? I'd love to expand my collection of styles to drum over.
More Portishead songs
Enybody knows what cymbals does he use as hi hat ? And what kind of tabourine has he?
would love to know that to, really beautiful combination
Can someone explain what he exactly does at 0:47 ? This is fucking amazing !
I wish those things could be writ!
paradiddlediddles, maybe with some ridiculousness with the kick drum and fills. This stuff isn't even human.
In other words: Magic.
PardusIgnis ff
just really practice your ghost notes and youll get there!

the only reason I know that Nautilus tune is because of the Master Sounds station in San Andreas.
Nearly broke my finger clicking Like so hard. Awesome and inspiring drumming!
Inspired by Bjork? It sounds similar to me.
@holygroove2 I wish I didn't hear your third sentence but it's all true. :/
Only wish you could actually hear what the guy's playing, because the mix is so shitty and totally overemphasizing the breakbeats in the backtrack ...
@tristraaf someone who was too excited and pressed the wrong button
he says he thinks he sounds bad on toms, and that he thinks he sounds better on snares
that finger tap at the beginning what you called that?seriously...i want to learn that
ok. EVERYONE HERE AGREES THAT THE GROOVE STARTING AT 0:47 IS COOLEST EVER RIGHT????
I wonder why Chris never entered the GC Drum Off..He would've won.
@ChrisDaddyDave i was wondering what vater stick model you were using on here ???
is that a noble and cooley on the left where the floor tom goes?
LEVEL:
Chris Daddy Dave

The drumming descendant of mainly Questlove, Dennis Chambers and Steve Jordan.
actually, his whole set up consists of snares. he doesn't like toms at all.
I thought i was a percussionist until ... I can't even begin to comment on this dude, [y-h-m]
who the HELL disliked this??
0:57 I lost my pants.
1:42 onwards is such a groove
I'm pretty sure its the drums in the original track that you're hearing.
I don't get it, how does he do such clean singles with minimal rebound? He looks like he doesn't even use fulcrum.
how the fuck can he do single strokes so fast with one hand, holy shit
what is the title of the song he plays towards the end of the video?
at 1.20 is the sample that was used for Jeru da Damajas track My mind spray! does anyone know who the original artist is?
Robert Minton Bob James Natilus
albert griffith thanks man!
Hey, Rolling Stone rated him just behind.....Meg White ! Come again ?
i think he changed ludwig's rims with marching snare's rims.
and obviously he tighted that snare as hell ;)
Chris Daddy Dave, Daru Jones & Karriem Riggins >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Questlove my opinion
I think I have watched this more times than any other video on youtube. Seriously.
fuuuucccckkkkkk
Shallow Rim Shot + slightly High tuning + a little bit of EQ = That sound
THIS IS INSANE !!!!!! DO YALL HERE THE GROOVE CHRIS IS PLAYING !!!!!! MY GOSH......
Finally getting the recognition he deserve...
He must climax within a few seconds with wrist agility like that.
@tristraaf a person that got traumatized by watching this clip.
i like how he added the riff from daytona 500 by ghost face killa
