2:46 is just completely insane. He doubles every hit, snare hi hat and kick making it sound like a very short delay is applied. I don't even understand how he does that on the foot without double pedal. I've never seen anyone doing that as perfectly as him.
the idea here that Chris is getting across is instrumental performance equivalent to mixing two different tracks like turntables. having one loop going while arbitrarily playing a counterpoint track over it. it's a very complex way of performing and a tests to the point that the drummer is not the only one that keeps track of time but that every musician is to keep that pulse.
@@tekumsehcru8035 Indeed. But on repeated listening you realise this is musicianship of the very highest level! I’ve been a musician my whole long life, and I find this staggering!
The bass player is Foley!!! Former lead bassist with THEE Miles Davis from 1987 - 1991. And his metronome is in head!!! Chris could not lose him no matter how hard he tried!!!
So for those interested, the baseline is from “Licking Stick” by James Brown, played by the mighty Bootsy Collins. Also played by Hank Ballard, on “how you gonna get respect” The more you know! It’s part of a great American jazz-funk tradition
Man I'm 14 years late but later that than never, this was pure golden mastership. The bass player holding it down was a damn rock, he wasn't budging on that lock in. Would love to see this get reperformed
Didn’t you see him sweating? i would too stay locked in for the sake of the entire performance, Chris is time traveling like never before, its just not safe to step out the Zone 💯
Chris Dave plays things that no one else plays at the speed he plays them. He's not the fastest drummer, but he is the most interesting drummer at incredibly fast speeds.
All music has a beginning, middle and end. That is form or structure. Free jazz can work exactly like it does here. I say free especially because of the way that Chris and Zhenya are playing - but they have roles. Chris is the leader who goes back and forth between playing with Zhenya or Foley or improvising when he wants to. Foley is taking the traditional bassist role (holding the time and the groove) and Zhenya plays the melodies and improvises at Chris' discretion. Love this vid.
This is a great demonstration that a bass player can be a excellent time keeper. Sometimes the drummer can go off and do whatever he wants to. If the bass player is solid in what he knows to be the time signature. he can keep the time regardless of what is happening.
Man, this is still sounding as good as when I first heard it! The sax player is perfect for this concept. And @phatcurtis, I think that's a good way to explain it, but when you think of Chris as the drummer it's way more interesting... either way that's a good explaination.
I saw this video once and it took me a long time to find it again. Although I'm sure I wont lose it this time I'd like to suggest that it be get a tag for 'Lickin Stick'
Because he’s a genius. And a modest one at that! I keep coming back to this year on year to remind me how far I have to go as a musician! Oh how I wish I was there, to see this!
Do you know how hard it is to do what Foley is doing? I mean, seriously. This group makes itself look really good. Chris is going to be Chris. But the other cats are awesome. The way Chris locks with the saxophonist on the melody is pretty insane.
For some reason I can't reply the relevant people but this is in response to 2CProductionsZAR's comment. I think the point this is the tension created by Chris and Zhenya playing against the bass player's groove. He grooves it so hard and stays solid the whole time they are playing this whack rhythm across it and when it comes back its just the most kick ass thing. They could just groove on the same thing but I think it would be less exciting. That's what I think anyway.
Chris Dave is quickly becoming my favorite drummer. I've always been hearing the types of things he does in my head. Our brains must work in similar ways.
Its like Roger Daltrey said of the Who "what people have to understand is that Pete is the Drummer, Entwistle is the lead guitarist and Keith, well he is a 100 piece orchestra" I'll give you a clue in this video, the drummer is the guy with 4 strings :)
For those who aren't totally hip to what Chris is doing (understandable, it's pretty out there), he's basically engaging in a long rhythmic modulation improvisations. The reason Foley is able to hold the time down so solidly (besides the fact that he's a world class basis) is that everything Chris is playing is actually at the same tempo as the groove, he's just modulating the subdivisions of the original beat to incredibly complex degrees. Plus it's a bit of a chops show.
@StudioPetrarca the top is a sabian hhx 18" ozone crash, the bottom sabian aax el sabor picante 18" handcrash. i know the hats don't look so extremely big, but only the 18" ozones have 8 holes and the spacing of the holes makes it clear that it's a hhx one ;)
@nthsieh928 That is indeed that Foley. Joe "Foley" McCrary from Columbus, OH. Played all that "lead bass" stuff with Miles alongside Marcus Miller and Kenny Garrett back in the 80s.
Foley is a machine. That was incredible. Locked in is an understatement.
Yeah but whats up with the mad drums and different tempo ?
@@jungleninja8415I'd wager that's where the criss cross in Criss Cross comes from. Lol.
"Bro, if Foley could get through Chris Cross with the Daddy Dave you can get through that bad acid trip"
Best comment I ever read
hahahahah perfect
You've done it my man. I'm playing this when i trip again.
@@randalllionelkharkrang4047 I don't think that was the message... and I don't think it's wise.
Greatest comment, jesus
The bass player is the drummer, come out of your musical box and think beyond traditional instrumentation, I think this piece of music is ingenious!!!
Well, on one hand, I'd say he's one of the drummers.
But on the other hand, I agree wholeheartedly. Adding that he always has been.
"Licking Stick" by James Brown + "Criss Cross" by Thelonius Monk
omg my brain....ARRRGHHHHHH..dat bass player is a real hero..
2:46 is just completely insane. He doubles every hit, snare hi hat and kick making it sound like a very short delay is applied. I don't even understand how he does that on the foot without double pedal. I've never seen anyone doing that as perfectly as him.
He' s just a mfkn genius...i guess!
Is magic 🤯
I know I'm 4 years late, but he's probably using the heel-toe technique Jojo Mayer uses or something akin to that
@@gaelbaca2958yeah technically it's not that hard. Just a very interesting and genius way of using it.
@@brauliosalcedo5418 Yeah man, I mean, there's a reason they call him "Daddy"
every video from this gig is so good, been re-watching for 15 years
little did we know Foley is actually deaf.
What?
Yeah what?????!!!!
Sarcasm. He’s saying the only way the bassist can keep up the groove is because he can’t hear Dave’s off-beat rhythms.
😊😊😊
😂😂😂😂😂or a genius
I can't stop smiling.
The purely of the bass line running through in contrast with the drum and sax is genius!
The more I listen to Chris Dave's drumming the more I love it.
All praise the Daddy!
Been watching this for like 10 years. I will always be studying Foley here!
Foley played with Miles Davis. Nuff said.
the idea here that Chris is getting across is instrumental performance equivalent to mixing two different tracks like turntables. having one loop going while arbitrarily playing a counterpoint track over it. it's a very complex way of performing and a tests to the point that the drummer is not the only one that keeps track of time but that every musician is to keep that pulse.
it is actually complex metric modulation, the different parts are all based on the same underlying pulse.
Yes it is really interesting but very hard to listen for the first time...

He's been doin this for years, since Miles Davis discovered him in 1987

I don't believe it. He's sweatin way too much to be just jammin silently too himself.
Matthew Martin Again, the hoodie...
Foley the immovable object!
i watched it 8 times in 2 days and its still getting better.
revolutionary drumming
Shouts out to that bass player for staying 'locked' during Chris' MADNESS! lol
