Who needs a band when you’ve got Simon Phillips?! 😂 No party tricks. No “shorts”. Just pure musicality. A true master of the art. Thanks, Simon and Drum Channel, 🙏🏻
Simon will go down in history as one of the most musical, influental and complete drummers of all time. His level of ambidextrous control is insane. He truly is one of the GOATs.
true, him and steve smith. Of course I am aware of all zappa drumers, steve gadd and so on, but these two guys can play literally any genre with such grace.
@@darkotube ! O.K. Let us face it: To me Manni von Bohr (A.E.O.), Randy Hansen ; Terry Bozzio (Zappa, Missing Persons) and Simon Philipps (Toto, Soloartist) are my main-influences. The two really all around drummers in history are Vinnie (Megadeth, John Patitucci) and Simon (Judas Priest, Hiromi). Steve Smith and Gary Husband come close 🔥🥁🎶
Any time I would think that I've found his best drum solo I have to realize that I was wrong because I always find an even better one. He is one of the perfect drummers for me who never stops improving no matter how perfect he is. A thousand thumbs up and long live Mr. Phillips!
It's not really,Billy Cobham's 1998 album 'Mississippi Knights Live' has him playing 3 snares AND 3 bass drums all different sizes - all respect to Simon though for continuing the tradition in fine style
I love Simon Phillips. Dude is a BEAST! So smooth and fluid. He makes it look effortless. Going to see Toto again in a couple weeks. Man, I wish he was still with them. Jeff Porcaro was a groove master. I love Jeff. What Simon did with those songs was masterful. He made them his own while paying tribute to Jeff's original parts.
I feel like the groove heavy songs like Rosanna, Hold the line, Won't hold you back and similar, that's where Jeff was unbeatable and Simon sounds a bit too mechanical. But in the prog songs is where Simon is right at home, his drumming in live versions of Hydra is just pure deliciousness.
Normally I would agree, and the same goes for all his toms but this red one I felt too harsh for my ear, tuned higher than my tastes. Still exquisite playing, and If I was offered this kit there's no way I would turn it down.
I think it is the player not the drum, that makes it sound so fantastic. I kinda thought there was some Bonham in there, or Bonham had some of him...chicken egg.
@@joeblow-nu7mz I agree, his touch is 98% of the sound. That being said, I noticed his signature snares have triple flanged hoops. I remember when getting my first die cast hoopen snare, that I liked the somewhat softer rimshots the triple flanged gave. I reckon this is part of it as well.
I could watch and especially HEAR Simon playing for hours and it wouldn’t be boring one single second! 😍 Holy smokes, what an amazing Drum Solo he played 😍🙏 Thank you for uploading it, I will watch that clip probably every single day the next weeks 🥴 All the best from Germany 🇩🇪, Philipp 👋
That was like watching a suspense movie, you're on the edge of your seat and can't wait to see what happens next! Beautifully constructed solo. All the elements in there and the tom turning? Pure perfection
The exceptional hand speed and independent use of all four limbs is apparent throughout the years of Simon Phillips' drumming career. He is a very consistent and versatile drummer, and anyone who he has performed with will attest to that. I have been working on my independence since I have been forced to learn to because of the size of my kit. That was the driving force behind Simon's open handed drumming style. You can see that he can lead with either hand, or foot, and the way he uses his left hand on the ride cymbal too. This is the man to take lessons from if you really want to perfect your skills.
One of most Brilliant sounding kits in the business ! Besides Mr Phillips being a complete Master !!! When the Bass Drum comes in it was Icing on top the Rhythmic Cake !!!!
Awesome , I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Phillips and his band live in concert several years ago and was blown away by his performance as well of his band . Simply amazing !!!
To me he paints a story with his solos 🎨. There are a few videos out there where he is with other drummers using minimal setups and the result is mesmerizing 🥁
Simon Phillips is not just a drummer, he is a musician. His solos, and his playing are not motivated by super speed whit zero musical meaning, like most of the youtube or tik tok drummers this days (AKA el estapario siberiano), au contraire, he is beyond that and plays music, which is rich in tonalityes and most of all, dynamics. I've been watching him for many years and to watch him playing with many people like Lee Ritenauer, Hiromi trio (probably my favorite collaboration of Simon) or the last Protocol album its every time such a pleasure for the senses. Watch him playing is to watch how he moves, how he gestures and how he sound (probably the best sounding drum kit ever) and the result every time is a master piece of pure high quality music.
I like the patterns he plays, and I especially like his sound. So transparent, and so balanced. A soft snare is quite rare. The whole reminds me of Mike Oldfield's 'Crises', where his drumming solo precedes the finale.
Quel grand musicien, je me lance jamais de l’entendre, quel groove, technique exceptionnelle , dynamique, orchestration, fluidité, tout y est, il est vraiment un virtuose
Truly an amazing work right there. Honest, humble and musically sound. I watch guys like Nate Smith and others who are amazingly talented players in the their own right but, this right here is mastery of the art of control, dynamics, phrasing, speed and excellence and that is why Simon is truly a Master.
Old school drumming: telling stories on drums orchestrationally, using sticks as pencils. Strictly No Bashing a la Bonham/Powell. One of my favourites.
The only true virtuoso among world-class drummers. Maybe you can also mention Benny Greb. But everyone else can only shred. It's all about speed and rhythms that are as complex as possible. Simon Philips, however, masters the game with dynamics, speed and volume like no other. It's always a pleasure to listen to him.
And I add the super talented Icelandic drummer Gulli Briem to this list. Agree that most contamporary drummers are more or less only shredders, which is not very interesting.

I don't like drum solos. I loved this. The dynamics, finesse and pure chops on display, but always keeping a sense of groove and musicality is just unmatched.
801 Live is the first time I discovered Simon as I was a fan of Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. Still one of my favorite performances by Mr.Phillips. Tomorrow Never Knows - incredible!
Entice us with another signature snare, please, Simon. It's been a while... You must have had some ideas... Absolutely adored the Gladiator and Monarch. I alwas enjoy your intricate yet musical approach. Entirely unique - That's you!
He's the drumming equivalent of Stevie Ray Vaughn: absolutely incredible technique (his sticking is so clean and precise) and at the same time beautifully musical too (the way he keeps the rhythm pulsing throughout and doing powerful fill variations on it). A very rare combination--amazing musician.

Such a technical and melodic drummer. A very rare talent
Simon has the most beautiful drum set layout I've ever seen. He uses it so musically through his famous open-handed technique.
My favourite Drum- and Cymbal- Set will be the Sonor-Signature for Manni von Bohr.

Simon: Yes!!

Yeah, he’s gotten better and better and better. He took the whole Billy Cobham thing and just went with it!

The sound he’s getting from those drums and the accuracy of his playing, just out of this world.
Absolutely.
Simon is just the full package. A master on the kit, musicality that has been world class for decades and the best example of a true professional.
A real Master !! And his snare and toms sounds amazing as always. Toms so open and clean. Snare tuning...perfekt to my ears 😊
Out of this world, always musical and a technical masterpiece
Simon is an incredible player.
A real treat to watch. He knows his stuff.
Simon has the most beautiful snaredrum sound I've ever heard. And what a fine drummer he is.
Normally I would agree, and the same goes for all his toms but this red one I felt too harsh for my ear, tuned higher than my tastes. Still exquisite playing, and If I was offered this kit there's no way I would turn it down.
I thought the same - the snare is ON POINT. It’s got the precision of a ‘symphonic snare’ and the ‘throatiness’ of a rock snare; perfect.
I think it is the player not the drum, that makes it sound so fantastic.

What a great sounding kit. I know it's Simon who's playing but I still had to mention this.
I always loved listening to Simon's drumming ❣️ I always thought that he brought a unique feel to the timing. Always crisp and upbeat ❤
He sonically paints with drums. Very few drummers do that. He uses the skins as his pallet 🎨
Listening Simon since 1978 ...He is the greatest drummer of all times
