it's mood swings by mike stern, then into conant gardens (slum village) with nefertiti (miles davis) played over it in a subdivided meter. Then it's the melody of rapture (blondie) played by kebbi while pino and sharkey hold down that same conant gardens groove, and chris dave and kebbi establish a new "1". Then at around 8:00 sharkey is playing "i can't help it" by michael jackson while the other guys are STILL chilling on that other groove. then sharkey plays a church gospel guitar version of amazing grace. thx for uploading !
That boy Pino be playing the mess outta that bass. you can't mistake his sound for anybody else...Isaiah, his feel and taste is A1 Kebbi Williams brings that rawness everytime...Chris...nothing needs to be said about him just listen.
There's another one at 6:52 that is also amazing. I wonder how they do it, I think Chris must have a pedal for his drum mics?! Who the fust else would think about using a pedal on drums?! Also that guitarist is EXCEPTIONAL, I literally get goose bumps when I hear his second solo.
from 2:42 - 8:02 the bass line Pino's playing is Slum Village's (Dilla's) Connant Gardens. then yes i believe that is Can't Help It by Esperanza Spalding right afterwards
I've watched this video so many times... I dont know how Im just realizing it now, but theres a time delay of like 0.4 seconds or less and now that I'm noticed it its going to drive me crazy! lol
Can anyone explain what they are doing when the drums and sax go off and the guitar and bass stay locked on their tempo? Are they just playing at whatever tempo they want or is there like some division of time that works with the guitar and bass tempo??
if you had a chance to see some of the shows from chris dave and crew on youtube they do that kind of ''trick'' all the time . my guess is that chris counts off for the sax player and they just split apart from the band in they own tempo and from that point on they do not listen to other guys at all , that goes also for the rest of the band , they just doing theyre own thing trying not to listen to chris and sax...is hard i know .....sten kentons big band does simular thing but on the big band scale , can you imagine that ....i hope that helps..
Petar Milanovic I've been wondering the same thing for a while. I always just assumed that Chris Dave was doing some complex polyrhythm beyond my comprehension. Maybe you're right, but if he really is just blocking out the bass and going off on a random tempo, I'd be disappointed...
TheAblist01 Mhm, we understand there's metric modulation occurring here. We're discussing whether it's calculated and exact (and somehow relates back to the tempo of the guitar/bass) or if Chris Dave is just going off at an arbitrary tempo.
+paulscott deedon "I Can't Help It" was written by Stevie Wonder, MJ recorded it, and Esperanza covered it, and I discovered all these things in the opposite order haha

I always thought they were just doing a slow version of Give it up or turnit a loose. Nice one mate.
The bass line is much older: From "Let the good times roll" by Little Beaver. Album "Party Down" 1974
Mike STERN??? LOL!!

10:50, after the chord slide, a man in the audience can be heard yelling "JESUS" as if hes met Jesus before, and is trying to get his attention.
Thanks for adding this! I saw the Chris Dave Solo you put up and then found this. I've watched this at least 20 times!
The opening track is Mike Stern's "Mood Swings". Thank you for the video
one of the last studio tracks recorded by Jaco...
I've watched this video so many times... I dont know how Im just realizing it now, but theres a time delay of like 0.4 seconds or less and now that I'm noticed it its going to drive me crazy! lol
Chris for President !!
Amusing quotes, even of "rapture" by 80's band called Blondy. Luv these guys! thanks for the inspiration.
Que chida versión de mood swings! Y fantástica alineación lo de las voces que se contraponen... Wow!
I sometimes feel Pino and Chris started playing together in preparation for D'angelo's return.

google "metric modulation" - a lot of times the drums and sax will modulate while the bass and guitar stay in the original meter
TheAblist01 Mhm, we understand there's metric modulation occurring here. We're discussing whether it's calculated and exact (and somehow relates back to the tempo of the guitar/bass) or if Chris Dave is just going off at an arbitrary tempo.
TheAblist01 If they're just changing the meter and not the tempo, then what are the two meters that are being played simultaneously?
Someone please tell me about that mic on his snare. Is it even anything to do with the mic, or the desk?
This song was a journey that ended too soon.
anybody have any idea what the big sabian ride is?

+Marco Luparia Nefertiti

Shot horizontally:)
Wonderful, done many years ago by Jaco Pastorius of Weather Report. Still sounds good..
I wonder if he triggers the delay on his snares and bongos by himself??!?
Naa his engineer's most likely controlling the delay
what happens at 12:12?
Es Pino ?????
"Welcome to jazzclub Mmmmm nice"
is that snare at the beginning sequenced? cant wrap my head around it
He's throwing the snare wires on/off
What does his hihat cymbals consist of?
+Eliasz Rychło It's a pair of Sabian 18" AA sick hats :)
Then it goes into the can't help it jam esperanza Spalding does it I think it might be a Michael Jackson song
+paulscott deedon "I Can't Help It" was written by Stevie Wonder, MJ recorded it, and Esperanza covered it, and I discovered all these things in the opposite order haha
