I initiated this interview/concert video. Some facts to it: We filmed in the Maarwegstudio2 in cologne (germany). That is an old, dry sounding studio. The drumset was mine basically (Chris only brought the cymbals). So, the snare is a Horst Link signature 8" deep Bubinga snare from Sonor. The snare really by itself sounds special and can be tuned easily in this direction. Snare bottom (Remo clear super thin reso-head) cranked up and a bit higher than the top. Snare top was - i think - a controlled sound coated from Remo. Maybe it was an Ambassador, I can't remember. The kick is a 20" Gretsch RB (Jasper Shells), very vintage. Filled up between 1/2 and 2/3 with blankets and paper. I think Chris did that by himself, can't remember. It was superdry. I found the setting of the seat (very, very, very high....maximum height) and the setting of the kick-pedal (DW 9000, very fast response...pretty tight screw) very helpful to achieve the style of playing. I tried it after he was gone. He also liked the metallic side-snare (also 8" deep). That is a big chief from Masshoff. So, mainly german brands. Who would've though :-). Cheers, Sönke

I love dilla jazz. I feel like I have to use both sides of my brain to listen to this. Like when you try patting your head and rubbing your stomach at that same time then trying to swap arms while you are doing it. Like this if anyone understands what I mean.

I get that it's a mix between a straight up 4 and a shuffle-type thing, but there's something that is very subtle in the way that Dave does it. When other drummers try to do it, it doesn't sound as connected to the 4/4 as much. It sounds forced. When Dave does it, it sounds like he's literally stretching from the 4/4 and relating it in a way that I can't describe. Love it.

Richard Spaven is also fantastic at this.
Basically he’s just using metric modulation, not sure which part you’re referring to specifically but it’s often just switching out of eight notes to eight note triplets which is kind of a strange feeling when you first start doing it or hearing it. Super dope and easy way to get into metric modulation.

    • @joaluar
      @joaluar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

you only read that interview where he says just learned the book 4 way coordination from marvin dahlgren.. its in PDF and is short book actually, but there in the last Page you can see full independence with metric modulation using a 9:3:2(2/4) or 18:6:4 in 4/4 pollyrhythms... he doesnt only makes metric modulation, has full independence to make súper mega wierd ochestrsted rhythms just in the basic 4/4 time signature, and if you modulate them in the Poly i said before you can reach that level of perfect detail and control of the sound quality and patterns combinations involved to make an incredible music language, stretching that whole structure, as if any rhythm in any tempo, could be interchangeable with any other in any other tempo

Deep snare drum, top and bottom head cranked up high but not choked. Wide open with a 1 ply 10-14 mil head (remo ambassador or something similar probably.)
Source: I own a 6.5 brass snare that sounds very similar that’s pitched up high. Cannot stress enough, do not crank the heads as hard as they go or it will just sound really choked and tight.

It is time to get right with Jesus. You aren’t going to automatically enter into heaven if you have lied or stolen or had premarital sex. Even one of those makes you worthy of hell fire. Don’t deceive yourself! The punishment of sin is hell fire.
Jesus died so you can get a clean slate and forgiveness of a future sin when we confess it. When you start to follow him you have to strive to obey what he commands.
No one will enter heaven without the blood of Jesus over you. No other way but through Jesus.

Off beat then it’s dragging in areas of the video but i guess it was okay.

Chris Dave reminds me of Keith Moon a lot of off beat fills kinda confusing and tasteless, but the groove is nice tho

Humildemente: espantoso.

It's like he is in the pocket for a minute then falls out sorry I don't like it my opinion tho.

You said it right - it's "like" he's in the pocket and then falls out. He can play in the pocket but he's stretching as far as he can. I've heard someone who worked with him say that he tends to rush, and you can hear that he's playing ahead of the beat here, but I can dig it.

Yea I agree I don’t really like it either. I feel like a straight up pocket would’ve been better

You obviously have zero idea what metric modulation is, honestly you probably have no idea what subdivisions even are.
Nothing here was off time, if your musical/drumming knowledge isn’t up to speed that is your problem, not Chris Dave’s.
If I were you I’d delete this comment, it’s embarrassing on your part.

phenocom So go woodshed, why waste your valuable time downing Chris? Shake any tree and 99 critics fall out, and one person doing something.
