Black music can never die. Ever. Jazz? Blues? Gospel? Hip-hop? Never die. As long as we breathe and live we'll keep on creating. You'll give it new names but it's the same old thing. Rhythms that have existed before language was conceived, to steal Chappelle's statement. You just can't stop the funk.
Some people get jazz, some don't. If you get it, you're so F-ing lucky… it's like a fire, the shit is the real raw deal. When I was 15, I was incredibly intrigued and attracted to it, but I didn't get it. I would get the more accessible little bits here and there. But then I bought a record by this “Coltrane” guy, because he's supposed to be the best or something… first time I heard it felt INSANE, and not in a good way, I thought it was music that a crazy person would enjoy. It was TOOOO much for me. But I thought “man, this has to mean something, this guy is not playing a prank, he's feeling it, I'm sure”. It felt like a powerful secret language that I just couldn't make sense of. So I insisted upon it. I kept listening to that record, on and on and on. For weeks, months… and then one day, and I remember it vividly, I just got it, I got the message. I just heard it a different way, it became alive, almost like I was blind and then could see-I think it was because my brain had been exposed to it enough to absorb all those harmonies, the progressions, the rhythms, and then finally my brain could assemble the puzzle, and I enjoyed that music so damn much. That period of my life opened my mind to a whole new world, not only in music, but a world of aesthetics, of completely abstract things, something to do with the fabric of the universe. And the main benefit is that it made me understand I could learn anything. We are blessed with a big brain that can absorb things, as long as you are interested enough to give it time. John Coltrane changed the wiring of my brain. Like a preacher that showed me the way, speaking a language I first couldn't understand. If you don't quite get jazz, I just hope this will inspire you to really immerse yourself in it, be curious and intrigued-believe me: it's a treasure hidden right under everybody's nose. Go deep into John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter, just to name a few. It will be transformative. It's the most inspiring and elegant music. I can't get enough of it. I grow every time I listen to it.
This is so true. My father got me into Jazz as a kid and only when I got to university did I get it. Jazz is like water just flowing and you are in the front seat of the current almost like water rafting. Its incredible.
Been revisiting this every month of so for years now. Every time I do I see Robert from 2.00 - 2.20 minutes and I feel the spirit of Oscar Peterson in those 20 seconds, his laugh and smile and style
I was watching these dudes playing Fucking Kedrick Lamar and was still emotionally impacted by it...and outta nowhere there's Chapelle jamming to hard bop and it's amazing. But youtube changed to it so fast it was crazy caught me off guard.
@@kevis6310 I actually discovered it today too after weeks of thinking what song it was. It Just played in an auto playlist on Spotify. Then I was like: wait a second......
Yeah this was at the end, everyone was getting ready to walk offstage and Dave just yelled out for Rob to play some hard bop shit. Cut off at the beginning cause I thought I was recording when I actually wasn't. Oops.
He is in another level, he don’t sees signatures like u and me , after all his experience , it’s now just dynamics , time and feel dinamics, like passing from “i can play on five and seven “ to “five and seven are kinda the same time signature” kind off miles similes footprints
The fact he can access all of these rhythms and pulses from the electric ether is unreal. The man is tapped into the creative energy of the universe. He wouldn’t be at this level without the ones before him. Voices of Eras and epochs come out all at once.
I'm somewhat new to the jazz scene so you'll have to forgive me for the title... I just went based off of Dave saying "Play some hard bop!" What style would you call this?
Even Dave Chapelle talks during the bass solo
hilarious!
(obviously chapelle shows immense respect to bassist)
I think that’s precisely the joke , but this guys live and admire each other you can really tell
😂
Bass solo + spoken word = new genre?
It's like Chris Dave can press a pause button on time when he plays, and then intermittently flicks it on and off at will.
The chemistry between Chris & Derrick is just 🤌🏾
