  • A full history of the Metal Gear franchise. From Hideo Kojima joining Konami's MSX division, to the most recent rumors regarding Bluepoint and the mysterious "BlueBox Studio."
Celebrate nearly 35 years of one of the most iconic stealth action video games of all time by learning how the series has evolved! Metal Gear is a stealth action video game series created by Hideo Kojima and produced by a Japanese holding company called Konami. The series began as an MSX pixel stealth action game, and has grown to be one of the greatest - most recognizable video games in the history of the medium. This documentary will cover it all, including: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the NES releases like Snake's Revenge, the highly influential Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, all of the PSP and Gameboy releases, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and everything in-between!
Join me as I detail each and every game, breaking down their development history, storyline, gameplay features, visuals, and their critical reception, all backed with each game's original soundtrack.

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for tuning in. This was a huge undertaking, but one that I was happy to do as Metal Gear is a series that is very special to me. I am currently sorting through my backlog of smaller videos now (including a look at Ghost of Tsushima PS5, Aliens Fireteam, etc) but am also in the production phase of another big documentary set to release in October!
If you don't already know what that documentary will be - there's a hint provided in this video in true Metal Gear/Kojima fashion. Enjoy!
    Corrections:
-MGS4 has nearly 10 hours of cutscenes - not 100 hours, must've added an extra 0 in the script and never noticed. Though it certainly feels like 100 hours! :P
-Otacon's father is HUEY Emmerich, not Hal. Misspoke
-Virtuous Mission was 1964, not 1960.

Fun fact: Solid Snake is, quite openly, an homage to Snake Plissken, the protagonist of John Carpenter's Escape From New York. Creator Hideo Kojima has been forthright about the film's influence on his work, and that almost landed him and Konami in court.

    • @SplendidCoffee0
      @SplendidCoffee0 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

Not only that, but the only reason why he didn’t get sued into oblivion is because John Carpenter himself thought it was fine and even went on to praise Kojima for his own creativity.

Kojima does take a lot of Hollywood inspirations on his work.
Snatcher is a mix of Terminator and Blade Runner and there's even a character who looks exactly like Sting does in Blade Runner.
And Policenauts is a some kind of Lethal Weapon of the future. Haven't played that delivery guy game yet, but i bet there's some in there too.

@@uria2001 Most people felt the same way about Raiden, but once you over look that and sink yourself into the story, it's a masterpiece and WAY ahead of its time. It's scary how much was predicted back in 2001 and how it still holds true today. Most people didn't originally like it because the story was too complex and the character switch from Snake to Raiden but opinions changed over the years as people grew more mature and revisited the game and realised how this entry to the franchise was THE defining title that gave MGS it's feel. Whilst I love the first game, MGS2 and MGS3 was the defining style of MGS.

I still believe that MGS3: Snake Eater is Kojima's masterpiece. Yes, MGS1's story and map design are iconic. Yes, MGSV features the best and most innovative gameplay in the series. But MGS3 is it's own beast.
The genius of MGS3 is that despite it being a prequel, Kojima chose to create a story and setting that barely had anything to do with the rest of the series. The story stands on it's own. You can play this game and only this game and understand everything. No outside context is required. It is simply the story of a young and skilled soldier taking on his most difficult mission yet, to kill his mentor, and stop all out nuclear war between the US and Russia. Although there is much more to it than that, Snake Eater also has the simplest story in the series, which I feel is it's greatest strength. You can view this game's story as it's own stand alone Bond-like spy espionage action thriller.

Hey Nick, loads of people getting caught up in sharing their own memories and experiences with the MGS games. But I would like to praise you for delivering this amazing video. With a running time of 168 minutes, you cover an entire video game narrative, mending facts together of a three-decade-long title and delivering a digestible, focused, and engaging story of the game we all know and love. As someone who wasn't able to follow the entirety of the releases and has some understandable gaps in knowledge regarding the Metal Gear lore, your video was a refreshing and reinvigorating jab of information, re-engaging my interest in the game and its elaborate adventure. Thank you for delivering such a remarkable video essay, which has interesting side stories, complete recognition of the creators and contributors, and a satisfying chronology to the epic saga that is Metal Gear.
    Fantastic Work! 10/10

I grew up with the main MGS titles, they all hit quite hard story wise and became my basis for what a good RPG should be. Metal gear solid, Sons of Liberty, Snake eater, and The Phantom Pain all included hundreds of hours of enjoyment with a story that would build until a crescendo of a tear jerker ending. No other games have ever inspired that kind of an emotional response and depth of though that I have played, or caused me to consider things as hard. Honestly Mr. Kojima is a legend and one of the best fictional story tellers I can think of.

This incredible documentary is a beautiful love letter to one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time and a personal favourite of mine.
The sheer level of time, research and detail required to pull this off is insane and the fact myself and many other (see the comments!) watched it in one sitting is a testament to your ability as a documentary maker and the genuine love us MGS fans still have for the series.
    Take a bow, Sir!! 👏🏾👏🏾

Snake eater will always be my most loved one from the series holding hands with the one that started the story back in 1998. One thing I like about Phantom Pain is the amount of effort they have put in the language aspect of the game. Here, Russian soldiers actually speak Russian instead of English with a fake Russian accent. And their Russian is right on the money; done by native speakers. Really adds to the gaming experience.

It's also one of the hints snake isn't who you think he is, in other games Russians would speak in American accents as snake spoke perfect Russian, unless said Russians were actually speaking English, and if so they would speak in a Russian accent. The soldiers in V not speaking English is a hint that this snake doesn't speak Russian
