    HOLY CRAP! This is AWESOME!!!! This is like an ultra souped up Raspberry Pi 400 which is something that is already so awesome, your project makes the membrane keyboard into mechanical and gives a much more powerful processor with Thunderbolt 4 so it can even have a dGPU! This is so friggin' awesome because it's such a cool and tiny desktop replacement, the only thing I'm still a bit worried about is cooling because the heatsink and fan were designed for a different airflow situation but you have done a really good job of managing that!

    • @mojolotz
      @mojolotz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Honestly if you did it right you could do much better airflow with this than a laptop will ever have. Especially if weight isn't as much of an issue.

    • @vorpled
      @vorpled 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      With a metal case it could also act as a huge heatsink.

    • @fritz_mg
      @fritz_mg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I imagine the airflow is fine though? It sucks in the air from the bottom and blows it out the back - just like it would in its original laptop frame. The feet are even taller in this case.

    • @ccricers
      @ccricers 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been attempting a custom PC with integrated screen using a NUC, but the challenge is getting it as thin as possible without messing up the cooling. These Framework boards look like the very slim profile that I'm looking for.

      The raspberry pi 400 is pretty similar though a lot cheaper and less powerful. It's a fun little thing. Oh also the keyboard is a lot worse, after all it's only 70 bucks for the whole thing, keyboard and computer. Lots of people spend that or much more on just a keyboard alone.

    This is SUCH GREAT WORK, man!!! Awesome job! Continue to refine this design, is my suggestion. I know there are so many of us that want to see Framework continue to grow and "succeed". And so many of us are into ideas such as Right To Repair, Modularity (word check) and even environmental benefits from being able to recycle hardware through reuse/repurpose. I know I would LOVE the ability to upgrade my Framework laptop later on to a higher level processor and it would be AWESOME to have the ability to be able to leverage your final plans (even "purchase" the design/pre-manufactered pieces) through you directly (for those of us not as skilled with 3-D printing and CAD Design) to be able to give my main board second life as an extra desktop, hmpc or even local server! So glad I came across your channel, man, and just love the work you do and the content you create! Keep it up!

  • @andreirachko

    You could totally put the batteries in front of the keyboard and use it as a palm rest (just like 99.9% of laptops do anyways). Your keyboard is reeeeally high, making it difficult to use unless your wrists are always in the air. A palm rest is definitely needed, and putting batteries underneath it would make a lot of sense. plus, you can put some foam pad on top of the battery compartment, making for an even more comfortable device.

    I really love you for doing this project.
    A couple pointers though:
    • A keyboard this high will need a palm rest so maybe that could be used to make space for a battery (but still not sure if all that height is ergonomic)
    • Coming from a keyboard enthusiast, it might be worth it to make the keyboard and usable as nice as possible:
    - 65% layout would be much easier to use than 60%
    - Use lubed linear or tactile switches of your choice
    - Gasket mount the PCB in the case
    - Design the case to sound as best as possible (but this might be too much for you to get into)

    This is an even better argument for the openness and modularity of Framework than simple upgradability. Other upgradable laptops exist with decent form-factors. The fact Framework's board comes out so tidily, and is meant to be worked on, appears to have made this project's success so much more attainable. And in theory you could drop in a newer Framework mainboard some years down the line if they stay in business.

    This is a great project for a clean setup. Especially if you can find a monitor that can deliver at least 60W power delivery and you use a wireless mouse. One cable from keyboard to monitor and one cable from monitor to outlet (and ethernet if needed). Maybe look into thermal pads to conduct heat into the aluminum chassis. The keyboard is a little tall to be ergonomic, so I'd either go with low-profile switches and keycaps or go with your palm rest idea. Underglow does not serve a functional purpose, so that might be something you can remove to simplify the chassis if you want.

    This is brilliant! I’m a total noob and have only now really began my journey down the computer technology path but this is definitely a build I’ll take on. My goal will be a wireless build, repurpose something for the display connectivity and go full size with trackpad integration to literally create the ultimate retro framing/HTPC. It won’t be anything cutting edge as far as graphical performance but I’ll definitely focus on the wireless freedom for everyday use in home. The temperature and materials should prove a challenge but I’m confident I’ll figure something out. Might steal from the automotive and invest in gold foil to solve the issue since I can’t think of anything else. Thanks again for this! 🥳🙏🏼

    Absolute genius mate, just think framework could create a whole product family around this. I've been toying with getting a dell optiplex uff and this would beat it hands down star idea

    If you build a slightly deeper case, you can move the motherboard back and the keyboard forward so you can have a nice slant on the keyboard, in the vane of the Amiga 500. You could then connect the 4 USBC ports to an internal rear facing module bay so the cables come out of the back. Just some ideas.

    Nice! Reminds me of the cyberdecks I used to Shadowrun with back in the 90s

    If this is a prototype, then the final product would be amazing! So excited to see how this develops!
