On Linux you can always press control-alt-F to get a true retro look - it will drop you into a white on black, text only, tty interface. Useful for debugging if you somehow manged to f your display server.

What'd be nice is if custom firmware could be submitted to framework, to add the capability to set a maximum charge/discharge state for the batteries. A good lithium battery might last 20 years if only charged to 80%, and discharged to 15%. Even if constantly on the charger. The main reasons batteries degrade in this use case is because of how batteries need to be charged. to get it to 100% say an example 10v battery, the charger has to hit the battery with 110-120% voltage or 11-12v. The problem is leaving it plugged in means that it is constantly being run at 10-20% over voltage. If instead you set the maximum charge state to 80%, or 10V you are now no longer damaging the battery constantly.

Remove the 2 side expansion bays and make a case for a trackpad and dock then slide it into the 2 expansion slots and Wala.

So I LITERALLY paused the video after the “Sponsor” spot to go subscribe to your Patreon. I’ve never subbed to a Patreon before (and likely won’t do any others) but had to for you (and I think I’m the first sub…so that’s kinda cool, too, if it’s accurate). Frankly…I’ll likely never watch a 45 min video of you 3-D printing out and sanding a model…but to help support what you’re continuing to do here…$3 a month was a NO BRAINER for me! As always, love your work and keep continuing to push out great, knowledgeable and informative content, good sir!
And speaking of “sponsorships”, you should be dropping a line to Framework themselves for a few “dollars” with all of the great publicity and ideas you’ve been providing them 😉
**UPDATE: OK, I stand corrected in relation to not watching the long videos on Patreon…I just went through the first posted one and it was actually GREAT to see your process in more depth (plus…got to hear wifey say “Hello”! Awesome work, man!

you could run the laptop and plug it into a external monitor and also plug in a mouse and keyboard.
The best thing about that arrangement is that you could use your laptop on the go, since it has a screen and a battery.

  • @SacredFIGHTER8
    @SacredFIGHTER8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You might be able to save some front height on the keyboard by gasket mounting it, you would be able to skip that top layer that you are using to tray mount. If you use a brass plate you wouldn't have to worry about the PCB flexing into the framework motherboard since it is so stiff. After being part of the mechanical keyboard community for so long it's cool to see projects like this. You may need to increase the bezel size a little to accommodate the mounting style but I think that would be worth it over the front height.

The wood is a good idea for version 2..... If you're doing the current case as a "desktop case not built into a keyboard" that you can sell and it doesn't ruin it perhaps some "ready to go" vesa mount stuff would be good (maybe 2 or 4 predrilled holes in the flat cover?). So you can throw it onto the back of a monitor.

Needs a dedicated hdmi port in the back with audio. I understand that it has usb-c thunderbolt on the sides but there should be a way to adapt the display and audio on the board to hdmi out or even display port. If it's a proprietary connector, it would be nice that Framework offer this as a kit in the future.

Just now I was scrolling through my list and it popped up again and the red frame you use made it look like I had already viewed the full video (I look for the red completion preview indicator when scrolling). I was truly confused as I thought I hadn't seen it yet and had to double check the release time thinking maybe it was an earlier video or something. They should sell enclosure to help their customers repurpose old parts. This would totally encourage customers to upgrade more because now they are not gonna wait til the parts fails. If they know they can make the old part useful, they will be much more willing to upgrade.
They could simply make a normal enclosure without the keyboard and sell it for like 25$-49$.

I would have looked into designing a right-angle module or have internal wiring for a Thunderbolt connection in the back. With the right monitor, it would be a one cable solution to the monitor, not including ethernet, that is cleaner than having a cable come out the side. Wish there were monitors that had ethernet built in and pass through via Thunderbolt; that would be the ultimate clean setup. The Framework has WiFi 6E, though.

terrible idea for a next step:
add a dock station, use some pogo-pins and break output all the IO to various options (ie storage, eGPU, mouse, ethernet, power), so that when you're at home you can just drop it into place and get all you desk setup attached without plugging in, and when you want to go you just power down and go.

I see this and think that's really cool, I look at the Framework motherboard, and that is also cheap(just $450 for the i5 version (coming soon, where you'd be able to order just the motherboard), my family owns a CNC machining business(unfortunatly I don't have a 3d printer for prototyping, and my skills in CAD at laughable at best anyway), and I feel like there is a market for something like this, but obviously I don't want to steal your idea, and while there is a market, it would be niche, like I want one, but idk if it would be mass marketable. Maybe what will keep framework going, selling the mainboards and other parts to DIY market the form factor of the motherboard is great for a lot of DIY projects like this. IDK ranting a bit, just I want to get a framework, but the formfactor of the motherboard when I saw your videos just kinda clicked, like, that is a good formfactor for cool DIY projects.

Been loving the series so far, do you know any other more common laptop PCBs that is also compact like the framework's one?

I don't know of any current mainboards other than Framework that operate without modification outside of the laptop chassis.

@@ElevatedSystems Have you ever considered building a pi 4 cluster inside a keyboard? I've been playing with the idea of building one, but can't afford the materials needed. All the pi keyboard builds I see only runs 1 pi so far.
