The really nice thing is, they can have the creative minds of those who want to make Expansion cards do their thing and if there is enough demand they can ask for the design and do a first Party Version for it to sell of the webpage.

To my absolute surprise, HP does! Or did. For older laptops, repair manuals exist, which include fairly detailed schmeatics, maybe not full boardview level, but still pretty detailed. Thing you can find while using HP Part Surfer are pretty amazing. But, when Haswell came, with the last socketable intel mobile CPU being Core i7-4700HQ HP never bothered again.
That didn't stop them from whitelisting WiFi and WWAN adapters.

One thing that interests me would be a dual-USB expansion card. It obviously would not have full bandwidth in both slots, but it would be great for devices that don't need the full 10Gbps transfer speed like a USB numpad/mouse. The card definitely has room for at least two type-C slots, even if type-a doesn't work out.

    • @DigitalJedi
      @DigitalJedi ปีที่แล้ว

A type C splitter / hub card makes so much sense, I'm surprised it's not an official option.

  • @scheimong

I'm honestly super excited to see what expansion cards third parties come out within a few months' time with proper R&D. For one, there's nothing preventing someone from making a multifunction card - just put a USB hub controller chip on the PCB, and we could possibly have a "Logitech dongle with USB passthrough" card. Now that's something I'd pay good money for.

That's absolutely doable, but you'd need a custom pcb to make a 2 port usb hub fit the enclosure. Also, its likely each port would have reduced capabilities over the laptops built in port.
Like, it probably couldn't handle 60W charging over these ports, but high baudwidth connections for external drives or displays would be viable, as well as more common usb device hookups. Depends on how complex the circuits are for bidirectional variable voltage power delivery.

A couple of ideas/thoughts on the expansions: for the mouse dongle, is there something that stops you from removing the whole usb part and just soldering the pcb directly on the Type C connector? That might save some space! And for the magnetic Type C adapter, is it rated for the full 100W the laptop can take? Seems a little flimsy for that but I could be wrong, some testing would be interesting to see!

    Hey
Sorry to bother you but, could you take measurements of the motherboard? In particular, position of screwholes, diameter of screwholes, height, etc?
I've heard they designed it to work well outside the laptop, so I'm thinking of modelling a case for it that'll be ready by the time they start to sell them standalone. Thanks in advance

After working on an expansion card, what do you think are the limits of this? I wanted to see splitters for the USB c ports but the card seems too small for that. Its already super cool we can do this

Allowing customizability like that goes a long way. Just for people who want to tinker, that's justification for getting the laptop. You're gonna get people plugging in those old Micro Machine keyboards with the flames, but because it's funny.

Instead of individual bits(or use this as an extension) you should try different kits that include a bunch of ports that are useful for different things like a charging station, one with like 2 or 3 video ouputs/USB 3 for gaming, or one for video ingestion so high speed thunderbolt ports and different SD card readers.

I think the size of those expansion cards is just wrong. to small to fit in multiple connectors, to big for a single one. I think they should connect the 2 slots, so that you can insert double sized cards.

It wouldn't be flush with the chassis, but it would be securely attached at least.

Hey! Great work. It would be good to have an expansion module with a pushable knob/wheel for editing and modelling. Thinking further, maybe using both slots to get a bigger/firmer like control surface and adding an extra slot to extend the chain.
