In this video, I explain the exact methodology we use at Growf to optimise Performance Max campaigns over a three-month period.
Month 1: The Learning Phase
The hard work was done in the account build; now we need data before we can make data-driven decisions.
- Add Pmax script
- Start with no tROAS
- Monitor asset group performance
- Monitor the insights tab for expanding search themes and audiences
- Monitor product performance
- Start to gather hypotheses for testing
- Target ROAS added after at least 20% of monthly ad spend per campaign (ideally £500)
Month 2: The Testing Phase
Now we have data, we can make data-driven optimisation decisions
- Review pmax script
- Where is spend going naturally?
- Make up for spend shortfall in additional (non-pmax) campaign
- Review insights to add in new search themes and audiences
- Review asset group performance
-Are certain asset groups taking significant levels of spend that could be in their own Pmax?
- Begin testing asset groups:
- Pmax “feed only” asset group
- No audience signals
- Test only customer data in the audience signal
- Review product performance:
- Are there products that we could optimise in the GMC?
- Are there products worth excluding?
Month 3: The Scaling Phase
We cast our net wide in the testing phase; now we need to refine it down and double down on our winner.
- Review your tests - which performed the best?
- Pause low-performing tests
- Scale high-performing tests across the campaigns
- Make further incremental tests to the ‘winning formula’ we have identified

Indeed it is. Do you use the same?
@@Joshinstone Yeah I do but to be honest apart from the insight you covered, i.e. 'might be worth trying ads on another channel' I haven't really found a great use for it. As I can't bid higher on one channel over another on Pmax, it's great for awareness of where the budget is going but nothing much else.
There aren't many videos on this script or the search terms one so could be something you might consider covering?
