Ian’s argument about baggage from known actors simply doesn’t hold up. I saw Alien and never knew the actors before hand. But even as a kid I KNEW there was something completely different about this movie and especially the way the actors seemed to be real people, not actors delivering lines. It drew me in and I cared when they were in peril. You don’t need to be a big star, you just need actors with natural talent and are given an environment to work the characters fully.
I think it’s a poorly articulated argument….. prob it’s better to have actors who can “emote” such as the cast of the original Alien….. Jesus….. RIPLEY has like 10 different expressions of being terrified….
i would also argue that, while they don't have a defined character or an arc(some of them don't live enough to have one), they represent some sort of stereotype of working class people that you can relate too. You have the stickler to the rules, the jokester, the silent type, the manager that seems like he is on your side but actually does whatever the company tells him, ecc..You really don't have that much time to know them better but you kind of know them because you' ve met this people if you ever had a job. They are archetypes. Which isn't a bad thing if you know how to use them.
I mean.., one could argue that the ones in Alien don't have very deep characters, they are more like cliches of working class types, but that's what the pacing of what is essentially a slasher in space requires. You can't lose ten minutes on a character talking about how he had a problem with alcoholism or that he wants to be a better father or whatever, when they are fighting for their life. You can have a couple of dialogues, some significant looks, details in the clothes etc..But The Thing? That's a movie that is carried by the characters. Sure, some of them are not that deep: he loves animals; he lives in the past; he is..flamboyant and a bit chaotic. But the main ones are developed.
@Eisenwulf666 but through their dialogue for the most part you can at least identify with them. As a disgruntled employee I identified with Parker and Bret. In the army I was told one thing and immediately that changed. To me it was easily identifiable. I've had bosses alot like Ripley. And I've had bosses like Dallas.
37:20 sometimes I wonder wtf Mega Geek is talking about lmao im sorry but no one gives a fuck if the characters are played by recognizable actors. you dont connect with a character because you recognize them from another well known property, you connect with them through the writing. Almost as bad of a take as when he said he didnt like the Shang Chi casting, not because of his acting, but because Simu Liu isnt built like bruce lee (5'7 140 lbs soaking wet). Simu is 4 inches taller and 40 pounds heavier!
Yeah….. the original has a broad cast of talented character actors…. Though small parts, you can tell them apart with their nuances….. I got more fun with the guys squeezing overtime pay in the original rather than the shaved head chick….
F for the lost Live Chat, where I missed MauLer’s reaction to the suggestion that Alien only got popular because it was a goofy 80s movie (that came out in 1979)…
I don't get the hate for Alien 3. It's a very interesting take on the franchise. Ripley goes on an arc from the first one, struggling to survive, to the third one where she decides to end the alien with her.
The *"Multicultural London/British Accent"* (MLE), as it's commonly referred to, truly was insufferable in this film. It's fine when Taron Egerton (Eggsy) speaks it in _Kingsman: The Secret Service_ but in the Aliens universe it sounds like a parody.
Meanwhile Godzilla keeps chuggling along rebooting, operating in different timelines, doing one off movies here and there. It's unique how it can survive and thrive within its own rules.
The script for Alien Romulus is absolute trash. For instance, where did the face huggers come from? Only queen alien can produce eggs with face huggers, and she's still on that planet from Aliens. What's left of Nostromo should be millions of km apart. Also, how does the company know what happened on Nostromo before they found Ripley?
1:05:40 Always good to see Bag Face come back to confess that he claps like a seal when he sees shiny things, and knows less about cinema than most average viewers. 😂
Regarding the characters in the Alien movie. I agree with MG they might not have had a background story, but the dinner scene let us know the dynamic of the people and the relationship between them.
Joker having a complete emotional breakdown and screaming out in indignation is "bad exposition", and the film "romanticizes mental illness"? Oooookay.
Regarding Romulus, I totally agree with LP, the movie is fu...ed from the start. The Nostromo is no more, it's molecules are spreading outwards from the explosion like the gas from a super nova. The alien that Ripley shot out of the escape ship would drifting away from that spot and has done so for many years, there is no way it would be anywhere near the spot where the Nostromo blew up.
1:33:49 Borderlands 3 was NOT a massive flop. 😄 I guess Tiny tinas Wonderlands may have underperformed, but not even that was a flop. The movie on the other hand… 😶
I have to say to all of you who says, "I liked the first half", why? The premise for the movie can't happen, Nostromo is no more, it has gone to see it's maker, it has ceased to be, it is an ex space ship.
Regarding connecting with the characters in the movie. I don't agree with MG, when I watched Alien back in 1979, I connected with the characters not cause I had seen them in other movies but from the way the actors interacted with one another and from the scene where they where eating together, the scene where Ripley talk to Brett and Parker when they are "repairing" supposed damages to the ship. You get to know these people by the way they interact, the dialog and the good acting. Now, for some reason, they always have a bunch of teens doing stuff in movies and TV-series, not only are they very often bad actors, but their characters act like dumb teens, and thats not fun to watch.

Regarding rings of power, and BF's comment "it looks ok". The costumes looks like they have raided an old studio wardrobe from the 70's. It looks like costumes from Space 1999 or Star Trek from the 70's, they are appalling.
I've not seen Alien: Romulus, and I've no desire to. But I do have a question... Why are they going to out into space, all tooled up, with a pregnant woman ?
Well, they were down-on-their-luck miners and the pregnant one (Kay) was only supposed to stay in the ship while the others went onboard the Romulus to get the cryogenic chambers and coolant. It was only when things went bad that she had to leave and get involved in the danger.
@@TheRedGauntlet The ship was one of their uncle’s (I think) and Andy (the android) was “owned” by Rain’s dad. Probably because they were planning on immediately leaving before WY caught on.
...any way what ever did Ridley Scott? hum just few crap like Alien, Blade Runner, Black Rain, 1492, Hannibal, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, among some others, but nuthing of relevance, just a random hack.
The summary of Trap isn't really correct. The wife of the killer left a part of receipt for the concert in a building he used to plan his murders. Then she called the police to go find it. The police didn't do the whole operation just for funsies, they did it because they didn't know who they were looking for. The movie is still bad though.
Nah i think bag face is wrong if a movie is well written with good characters and story. It doesnt have to have any nostalgia bait. The fact that the alien is in the movie is enough just don't screw up the lore or timline.
Love the stream but it was full of hot takea Alien and the thing didn't have characterization Aliens was just a fun cheesy 80s movie The original crow is good but has problems

Wait so your telling me if someone watches the alien movies in order and includes this one. The Romulus android says get away from her you b*tch and then the next movie is aliens where Ripley says the same line? How does that make any sense at all

What an awesome panel and top banter, and also Mega Geek showed up again for some reason.
To say that the characters in Alien and The Thing were not characterized might be the dumbest statement I've ever heard today. Oof times 1000.
Yea that blew me away

Joker is not as similar to taxi driver as people say. It’s closer to king of comedy, but still a really different film.
I can't wait for the "Acolyte canceled" reactions today. lolol

Pretty sure no one swears as satisfyingly as Cynic
Alien 3 is my favourite of the franchise. I don't think it's better than the previous two by any metric, but I like it more.
I don't get the hate for Alien 3. It's a very interesting take on the franchise. Ripley goes on an arc from the first one, struggling to survive, to the third one where she decides to end the alien with her.

It's fine when Taron Egerton (Eggsy) speaks it in _Kingsman: The Secret Service_ but in the Aliens universe it sounds like a parody.
I think the bad writing makes it more insufferable but as a Brit myself there's a reason why that accent works best in british gangster films lol
