I cannot believe Ridley is 86 years old.... it's literally incredible how animated and engaged he still is.
first interview I've seen where he's struggling a bit with his voice... but hopefully just a cold
Compared to Biden.
Ridley will live to a hundred minimum. Depends how the quality will be
..ridley is the master ..alien, legend, blade runner, black rain, thelma and louise, G.I. jane, gladiator, black hawk down, matchstick men, kingdom of heaven, hannibal, american gangster, prometheus, the counselor, all the money in the world
I think he is still sharp is because he is constantly working.
"The only critic that can be relevant to you is yourself, don't listen to the press."
- Ridley Scott
That seem like something mark twain would say very insightful
Maybe, perhaps too, the fans who buy the movie tickets and the expensive memorabilia. You don't want to piss them off otherwise you've lost your core money source.
H.R.Giger and D. O" Bannon they are turning in their graves.
stop producing absurd movies and dedicate yourself to your grandchildren, you're crazy
If he had seriously taken that advice, Alien Covenant would never had existed. Instead, we would've gotten Prometheus 2.
@ThePTurtle115 and thank God. Promethean was bad enough, didn't need any more of that.
My sweet poor grandparents thought they were going to see a documentary in the cinema in 1979. To their credit, a trailer wasn't as readily available as it is today. According to my granny, she has never been scared and mentally terrorized during a movie, she and my grandfather squeezed each others hands all the way through and couldn't wait for the end. Today, of course, she laughs about it, don't worry. 😂❤
Oh god that is both hilarious and horrifying 😆
I was 5 years old when i seen Alien in 1983 on my dads Betamax i was terrorized as well lol. But it's what made me a die hard fan today.
I was around the same age like you, when I was also seen the third film partially at our neighbor's house, their son was my friend (he was 7 at the time). Partially, becouse I was so scared I hide behind the tv (wtf I thought there I will not hear it or what 😂), but I was also courious so I always returned, until I coudnt bear to watch anymore.
In the end scene (when Ripley dies) was burnt into my brain. I wonder am I a fan, just becaouse the film traumatized me? I guess we will never know. @@user-jambo-white
I'll be honest, since then I don't understand one thing. In my country, the film was called "Alien - The eighth passenger is the death". DEATH! How could this have escaped their attention? I guess they didn't read it or missed the hint. At least they have a great story. 😆🤗
They...they could've just...left the theater too! Why didn't they just leave?!
Fede Alvarez got so much energy talking on that thing, it's either a part of his character or he really REALLY is into that project and the things he does
my mans knows he cooked up something tight
I think he's very nervous and doesn't feel comfortable around Ridley.
@@outerspacemexico
Bingo.
Plus his inner franchise ‘fanboy’ is just elated right now.
I’m excited to see his chapter in the universe.
He is know in Uruguay for being a big big fan of alien, that’s why he is so excited to talk about it
Well it should be an honor for a young director to not only work on one of the biggest horror franchises of all time but also collaborate with the original director that is the genius Ridley Scott
Ridley Scott is a living legend.
With Alien and Blade Runner he re-invented scifi cinema and created a whole new culture.
Thanks for all the movies and the inspiration.
He's the godfather of the Cyberpunk genre and Sci-Fi in general, absolute inspiration
Yea…
I love that Ridley Scott took the opportunity to recommend “Emma” lol
I saw this comment before watching the video and assumed there was no way this was about the film from a few years back and was going to be Ridley Scott talking about an actress
like i thought that film met my expectations for a modern adaptation/period piece, just never thought i'd hear it be recommended out of his mouth lol
Saw Emma at the cinema. Not sure I understand any fuss around it haha
I assume his favorite part was the dressing scene, dude loves scenes of young half naked women, he puts one in just about every movie he's directed, same with George Miller, even when it's completely unnecessary, they find a way to fit it in.
He hired Noomi Rapace for Prometheus after watching the Swedish 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'; also highly praised that film.
I could just sit in the corner and listen to them chat for hours.
Ridley doesn't suffers fools and hates everything to do with his own work. The fact that he liked it says a lot. I CAN'T WAIT.
he doesn't say that he likes it...listen carefully
@@GreenTeaViewer he had no notes to give and said it was going to be a huge movie. I listened. Bite me.
I would listen to whatever Ridley Scott says literally for HOURS. A Grand-Master of Cinema, i just love this guy!!
Agreed. The same brilliant mind was Karl Lagerfeld.
"The French complicate everything" Ridley Scott is a national treasure.
What's the template number for this bot comment?
Oh, so that's why he made Napoleon so dumb !
Alvarez: I was super-happy that you said you enjoyed the movie, that you said it's great and-
Scott: I actually said "you've got a huge movie here".
Me, rubbing hands: Ridley coming in hot!
Yep that got me excited too 😅😅
he said both tho
@@KillBill808 I think Ridley would know better than you what he said.
It’s a crime Fede Alvarez wasn’t able to do his Evil Dead 2. Hopefully he gets to do it one day
If this is a hit, maybe he'll pursue the idea
Completely agree...
Evil Dead Rise confirm that all those movie's are in the same universe so mb one day we'll see all protagonists in one big movie, and Fede will be directing it
His evil dead was an absolute terror (in the best way possible)
Dude would be perfect for a DeadSpace movie
Ridley Scott is by far the greatest film maker in Hollywood history. Alien will always be my favorite horror movie
Just got home after watching Alien: Romulus. We’re back. 🤣👏
i remember watching Alien when i was like 17 in the theater, and when the Alien burst out, i wanted to look away, but same time, i didn't want too! movie scared the crap outta me, but also left me feeling like i just watched the best Sc-fi film ever made
Ridley is really the kind of guy who makes you understand, 'Hey mate, I appreciate you, but spare me the flattery.'
I believe that Don't Breathe is the only movie ever produced that listed its stand-ins along with the main cast.
Fede Alvarez scuplts movies like Hitchcock did, frame by frame.
Ridley Scotta a treasure one of the finest filmmakers there has been. Keep going strong. Thank you!
Love listening to them talking. Would’ve listened to their conversation for hours.
If there’s more please upload it when Romulus comes out!!
Here in Brasil the title of the 1st movie was also "Alien: the Eighth Passenger" (Alien, o Oitavo Passageiro). 🦊🎤🤘🏻🏳⚧🏳🌈🇧🇷
12:55 OMG! I can’t believe Stanley calls, asks his question, and before hearing the whole answer he just hangs up. He did this to RIDLEY SCOTT! OMG how funny!
Ridley Scott's Stanley Kubrick story is awesome
Saw the movie last night. Fede Alvarez is brilliant.
The movie was okay.
I love RIDLEY SCOTT
Fede: And you were totally right!
Ridley: Yeah.
Fede: and how accurate you were!
Ridley: Yeah.
Fede: and everything you said was spot on!
Ridley: Yeah.
Lmao you gotta love Ridley!
I saw Alien when i was about 8. It haunted me, and for weeks after i always slept with a pillow on my stomach to stop anything popping out! 😂
Biden is 81....RIDLEY is almost 87! He's in incredible shape and still talks at great speed! He shoots faster than directors less than half his age
...whatever you think of his recent output (which I think is somewhat harshly judged, due to being compared to his own high standards)
that's incredible ....what stamina
Ridley is somewhat incoherent in his speech but mostly because he has such high-level ideas... they can be hard to put into words!
Ridley drinks whiskey every night. Some people have resilient genes
Totally agree with you. Ridley has not lost his touch and is making such epic movies at this age. Ppl are way too harsh in their criticism. They heap so much praise on mediocre marvel movies, but with scott they suddenly turn into pretentious film scholars with high expectations. The comments on the gladiator 2 trailer are so unnecessarily harsh
@@sahilsehdev4235 yes...goes with the overly critical world we live in these days with all the avenues we have to critique....people should not expect a man pushing 90 to be judged against classics he made in his 40/50s...when simply making well made, good movies is more than amazing
I think alien Romulus may be the movie I am most excited for. I think Fede is making a proper alien film and I’m beyond excited
"Proper" alien film meaning it's all stuff we've already seen before? Nah not for me.
@@RingoLoadagainno, no. It’s going to be an incredible film by a real auteur.
@@RingoLoadagaina “proper” Alien movie this indeed was. Scary, intense, and atmospheric.
You want originality and completely new ideas? There isn’t a single film out there that hasn’t borrowed or reused another idea from a previous idea. Not a single one.
It makes me kinda sad that Ridley doesn't appreciate Blade Runner 2049
Because he didn't direct it, not because it isn't amazing. Sadly that's the truth with Ridders.
Actually in a fairly recent interview he praised...I think he initially (since confirmed) had a bit of FOMO and regret for not doing it like he planned on and his comments in real time were of a bit of envy. Understandable. He still played a big part in it and was on set a few times.
Nah. Its way overrated IMO. It just wasn't that good. Kids are too easily fooled with nice looking images.
@@buzzfunk it does have some awesome visuals to be fair. Roger Deakins 👌
@@buzzfunkthat could easily be applied to the original
I never knew the mountain scene in BR was Shining Cutting Room Film. Fascinating 😊
Ridley Scott + Fede Alvarez + HR Giger= Masters of Horror !
Mr. Scott seems so generous and devoted, and you always see that with people that are in the top of their creative fields. I can't wait to see Fede Alvarez's movie after what he accomplished with Evil Dead.
13:20 I love what Ridley Scott has to say about film criticism. Whether it's good or bad Everyone can criticize things in a fun way. No matter what it is Which I don't understand or understand at all what the movie is trying to convey. Reviews are very mixed. And most often overlook the various elements, gimmicks, or backgrounds. If it's not something they can relate to, they'll say it's rubbish. I remember the first time in my life I saw a movie set in the Alien universe. In theaters like Alien Covenant, people blame Scott or whatever. I can honestly say that no one knows for sure what goes into the creation of each piece. That's both heavy and time consuming. Until that work comes out Even though it's not perfect But I hate that some people viewed that movie as trash. Some fans called Prometheus and Alien Covenant trash movies, bad movies. In a fun way, regardless of anything As a fan of every Alien movie, I never consider any movie to be trash, whether it's Alien 3 that disappointed me or the crossover AVP movie that I grew up with. I admire and respect everyone who creates these works. From thrilling to the human and spiritual, it's a franchise that I still hold dear as the cinematic treasure of my life. I don't want it to go to waste. Alien Romulus is definitely one I won't miss. Thank You Scott, Fede, James, David, Jean and others who made Alien films.
I will use my heart or love for this franchise, various elements from every part. every feeling I don't come to see the movie to find fault with the characters. Reasonableness I wanted to watch it because this is the movie Alien that created some of the best memories of my entire movie-going life.
Absolutely i'll watch in IMAX theater for my second life time after Avatar The Way Of Water.
I need Ridley to finish Davids story arc
Yes please :(
It would work well as a tv series; less pressure on making a ‘hit’ film and more time to tell the story.
As bad it was, I seen both movies for what? He probably doesn't know where to go with the story anymore left it at cliffhanger such a movie maker.
@@davidm4677 That's not true at all. There is even a script written and it even has a title. Ridley knew where the story was going all along. Covenant was changed cause the studio wanted him to shove some "traditional" alien elements.
@@RingoLoadagain Traditional Alien element's ?cuz Prometheus was snooze fest he just can't make good Alien movie he just directed Alien everything else was done by someone else.
Loved the story about Kubricks interactions with Ridley. Looking forward to seeing Romulus soon
*That was great having both of them talk about various topics in film*
GUYSSSSS big big news: Fede Alvarez will be at @viewconference this October!! I’m sure he’ll discuss all these topics! There will be an opportunity to ask questions! I will be there! Can't wait!
Ridley is a national treasure 🖤
No it's not besides Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator he doesn't have any good movies that's his whole carrier.
@@davidm4677 🤡
@@davidm4677 you’ve left a lot off that list - plus just having one of those films is career goal most filmmakers will never reach.
Legend, Black Rain, and Kingdom of Heaven are amazing films of his.
The characters' relationships were the best part of the movie, and watching interviews with the cast it seems they actually do like each other and that's what came through on film.

Tears streaming down Neil Blomkamp’s face.
Ugh. We deserved Neil Blomkamp's Alien 5 :'(
@@xii22loop absolutely not. That was a steaming pile of dung.
Guy can't write. @@xii22loop
I think it's safe to say that if Neil had the kind of chemistry that Fede and Ridley have then his film would have gotten made
@@xii22loop No, it would have been stupid. He's made several movies at this point and most of them aren't that good. People assume it would have been amazing because it had familiar stuff, which is how a franchise becomes stale.
5:35 an easy explanation for that room is that if they cool the rest of the ship, but pump the excess heat into that area (instead of wasting it into space) it would keep most the ship cool but that space would be like a tropical forest. Or they could have made several rooms that could use the tropical feeling (like growing food / fruit).
"The French complicate everything."
At this point, Ridley is completely unhinged. He just couldn't resist another opportunity to slag the French people off. Reminded me of his hilariously outrageous comments about them regarding the lukewarm reception of NAPOLEON by the French critics-- "The French don't even like themselves!"
Tommy Lee Jones, William DeVane, James Best, 1977's "Rolling Thunder", Grossly Underrated. Great shootout at the end. Also, an unforgettable scene with a garbage disposal.
Ridley!! No matter how much you dislike the comp “JAWS in space” you can’t skip over it when listing the great horror films preceding yours. Everyone learned from it, particularly about how to (not) show the monster for maximum terror. It also happened to establish the idea of the blockbuster, and without it, you would have never been given the budget that allowed you to turn ALIEN into the masterpiece it is.
(Not going to get into how you skip over BARRY LYNDON and its significance for THE DUELISTS when talking about Kubrick…)
Of course Ridley gonna say the movie is amazing... he's the producer for fk sake!
It was, dork.
As time goes on I can’t help but think that Ridley Scott’s success in the early days was mainly down to the people around him like his creative directors, casting team, art directors and writers. They’ve all either died or are no longer in the business.
Ridley Freakin Scott, fan boying Stankey Kubrick state the very fact that what a legend Kubrick was
Kubrick was unparalleled yes, no filmmaker comes close to him even today
The last section from 12:00 onwards is amazing.

This so inspiring and interesting to listen to this extraordinary filmmakers talk about one of the most iconic franchises in movie history this awesome 🙂✌️
As soon as he started talking about how he didn't know where it was coming from, a faint sizzle to my left ear was hissing, I was spooked because it wasn't coming from my computer...I leaned to the left suspecting my giant iced tea bottle and was relieved to find that it was the pressure of the cap, no xenos thank god!
I simply loved Alien ROMULUS! It was a masterpiece 😊
love hearing them talk about the bad movies without hating and just simply learning from them. Ridley Scott is like a George Lucas who MIGHT HAVE a new Dave Filoni
I love it when Fede says "there will be 13-15 year olds watching this movie." I was 9 when I saw Alien for the first time LOL.
It's "Break Down" not "Breakdown". You got it right in your other video with these two.
This movie has a lot of hype, hopefully it lives up to the hype. Big shoes to fill....
I've been advocating for my friends and coworkers to go see the new movie. I really enjoyed it.
Alvarez surprised me with the evil dead remake so when i heard he was directing this i was on board for sure!
"Don't rely on the monster". In the original movie, it was Giler and Hill who were most responsible for the final narrative hewing to this maxim. In the original O'Bannon/Shussett "Starbeast" script, the screenplay WAS totally reliant on the monster, and the story ended up a bit one-note as a result. Although Giler and Hill exaggerate the degree to which they rewrote "Starbeast" (most of the plot beats remain), their most important realization was that the story needed a secondary antagonist in the middle act, which is why they came up with the key sub-plot of Ash being that antagonist. He's both a direct threat and also a proxy for the faceless Company that really doesn't care about the lives of the crew.
Wow I never knew the end of blade runner is footage from the shining that’s rad!
Ridley is eating well. You can tell by looking at his stomach. Lol. I respect Ridley for giving other people a shot.
I love that he appreciates the mystique of the alien, uses practical fx and lighting to hide parts of the alien, makes you use your imagination which can be the most horrifying part of the movie.
Fede Alvarez cooked on this movie, it’s up there in the top three after Alien and the no.1 Aliens.

I respect that Ridley appreciates that Fede casts young relatively unknown actors. It's quite easy to blow a big chunk of the budget on a veteran cast to secure an audience and make sure that the critics even if the movie is bad may say, at least the acting is good. Personally I feel Ridley is slightly guilty of at times doing that. So I think it's cool that Ridley has respect for a director who is confident in his ability to cast and direct young actors.

what is the future of these alien movies? where do they go after this one?
Honestly if it was me, I'd make a movie introducing other alien creatures that are just as dangerous as the Xenomorphs. Alien Resurrection kinda did that, Prometheus, and Covenant did it too. We could use a bit of variety here and there.
There's an Alien TV series currently in production for FX, that is created by the same guy who made Fargo. It's scheduled to be released next year.
Question: Is "you've got a huge movie here" the same statement as "you've got a great movie here"?
When they talk about "engines" , what do they mean? (Any film nerds over here) Like horror engine, action engine. Really would love to learn
I’m so looking forward to this movie. We’ve needed a new good alien movie, since Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which were fine to me, but i know not everybody agrees with them. What I would still love to see is Neill Blomkamps Alien 5. I saw the artwork on that movie, and I know he can pull that off. It’s just the production company supported Ridley’s Prometheus and Alien: Covenant more.
I really wanted to see Blomkamp's Alien film too. But after his hast two films, I'm not so sure. Demonic was especially BAD

genuinely can't wat for Romulus. Fede nailed the dark and creepy atmosphere of Evil Dead and I feel he will do the same for this film. He seems pretty grounded on what fans what in an Alien film because he's a fan himself. The fact that he was greatly inspired by Alien: Isolation is what makes it even better
I don’t get how Ridley thinks he owns this franchise, he was the director on the original and had nothing to do with the first three sequels at all. Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett created this universe, Ridley was just the hired director.
