    This is the new entry-level, single motor version of the Polestar 2!
    It doesn’t look all that different from the dual motor version, both on the outside and on the inside, so… what’s the point? Well, this single motor version is cheaper to buy, with prices starting from just £40,000!
    It comes with a front-mounted motor and the choice of either a 61 kWh or 75 kWh battery size. The smaller battery has a claimed range of 273 miles and can produce 224hp, whilst the larger one offers 335 miles on a single charge and 231hp.
    So, is this entry-level Polestar 2 an option worth considering, or would you be better off just paying the extra for the dual motor version? Stick with Mat to find out!

    The whole point of this version is its range, not performance. So for someone who needs 540km (335miles) but do not want Tesla Model 3 (I really, really tried I just can't like that car) now there is some more choice.
    We have also Ford Mach-E single e-motor with extended range battery with 610km (381miles) of range , though it cost a bit more. And some other models in this price range.
    Things are getting more serious in EV world. It is still not quite there. We can see companies are a bit lost in their approach. Not to mention the whole situation with recharging stations.
    But it is getting better. While I do not plan to buy this year, I think next year will be the one, as we will have way more models to choose from (Chinese might join the game with stronger offer), the charging network will be in much better shape and hopefully the prices will stabilise a bit.

      @@csfynabranch4496 That being said, the minimalistic interior in the Model 3 makes for some really good storage space and legroom in the front. We are a family of 4 and there are no issues with luggage or interior storage space, thats a point the PS2 fails at. Cupholders are not good, conflict with arm rest, and also very cramped width regarding to legroom in the front. I suggest everyone to sit, try and drive before deciding what to go for.

    Mat, they probably opted for FWD instead of rear because Scandinavia is going to be a good chunk of the market for this car. And, as a person living in the mountains, I can assure you, it's AWD or FWD, rear week drive in winter is way more dangerous.

    • @fields1
      @fields1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Get snow tires on a RWD car and you will do better than a FWD car on normal tires. Also, the FWD snow advantage evaporated in an EV because the weight distribution is no longer putting most of the weight over the front tires. That’s what helps fwd cars in snow. EVs are usually 50/50 or even slightly rearward biased. Model 3 has 53% of its weight over the rear wheels. On snow tires it’s plenty capable, probably more so than this 2.25 ton front wheel drive car.

    • @expertice
      @expertice 2 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      @@fields1 Dude, we HAVE to get winter tires for our cars. Anything else is illegal. Summer tires on any car mid-winter in Norway is a no-go suicide mission. Obviously Marius Budin is right here.

    • @keacyut777
      @keacyut777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree with u.

    • @fields1
      @fields1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@expertice the issue is that in an EV the weight distribution is farther back (normally closer to 50/50) than any ICE FWD car which usually has 60-70% of the weight over the front tires. With a 50/50 weight distribution , the advantage of FWD is reduced greatly as there’s not a heavy engine sitting over top of the front wheels. Model 3 for example has 47% F/53% R weight distribution.
      I would rather have a RWD EV with a 50/50 weight distribution and snow tires than a FWD car with 50/50 weight distribution on snow tires, especially when the FWD car weighs 350kg more than the RWD model. Just look up Hyundai Kona Electric or Kia Niro EV or Chevrolet Bolt (Opel Ampera-E) wheelspin. They’re not the greatest in snow.

    I test drove the polestar with dual motor with performance pack and it's fun but the top acceleration is uncomfortably strong, and the suspension is much too firm for me. I think the single motor with pilot and plus packs is a great choice, fast and powerful enough for 99% of drivers, super comfortable and technology-wise just as good as the top of the range model. I disagree with Mat on one thing though and that is rear seat leg room. If the front seats are set for a relatively tall driver say around 185cm tall, the seat behind it will be quite tight space wise.

    • @wiryantirta
      @wiryantirta ปีที่แล้ว

      tbh, I just wish the single motor version is a RWD instead of a FWD. Unless they knew people would upgrade to the AWD version to avoid the FWD. I know I'm one of them.

      @craigo2656 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Polestar is Chinese. China (Geely) are in the process of moving Volvo to China as they slowly hollow out western industry and jobs. They cannot get traction with their own brands so they use western brands against us. This hollowing out will eventually hollow out every single sector as they move all industries in house to China.
      China are literally an enemy, that may sound like hyperbole but it manifestly isn't. They are a communist/totalitarian regime. Partnership is not a part of their thinking process. It is the cover they use to slowly dismember western economies. They do not want partnership they want control and ownership. This is an will increasingly bleed in to political control and eventually erosion of western freedoms. China simply cannot allow freedom of thought or speech, it is not only antithetical but an existential threat to their regime. They cannot limit restrictions of freedom to their own country as this is a constant pressure on their regime. So they need to extinguish freedom in as many places as possible. All empires spread their model.
      This will eventually be true for us. We are walking ourselves in to totalitarian control. If you think it seems too far fetched then you need to think deeper and harder. If you think this process will be benign, it will not be. They will slowly tighten their grip on democracy. Your government will be controlled by China, you will not be allowed to change your government and your government will impose every single decision handed down by China. You will not be able to protest or question this decision. You and your children will grow up without any freedom for the rest of your/their lives. As one example China force sterilises people, in the 80's Chinese themselves, now Uyghurs.

    Challenges to being an early adopter! My Polestar 2 EV was in the Volvo/Polestar service dept for the 2nd time in its short lease life, this time for 26 days, to try to fix software and possibly hardware issues. With the help/intervention of Polestar corporate, the car was finally returned yesterday afternoon with 45% remaining so I plugged it in and I couldn't immediately charge it. Back to the service dept today; the brutal saga continues! According to IHS Markit, forecasted expected volume for 2021 is only about 250 vehicles/month. Polestar corporate, its PS2 vehicle, the customer service team, vehicle repair services, and parts inventory are clearly not ready for prime time in the US! It is not like you can go to another dealer or repair shop; your are stuck with the one service location and team. Lesson learned?

    Regarding the key, you're not supposed to use it other than a backup. Install the phone app, pair it with your car and it will automatically unlock for you as long as your phone is in your pocket. It's basically a keyless car.

    • @boltar2003
      @boltar2003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stupid idea. So you forget to charge your phone (or you lose it) and suddenly you can't start the car. Brilliant! Yes, you can lose keys too but its a lot harder as you're not constantly taking them out of your pocket or bag.

    • @voltaelektrifiera3556
      @voltaelektrifiera3556 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use my phone for a lot of other stuff. I pay with it, I start the climate control with it, I Identify myself with it. If the battery ran out or I lost it, I would have a bunch of bigger problems than having to fetch the backup key to get in the car. I would never forget my phone, but occationally I pull the cars door handle in vain because the key is in another pair of trousers.
