    James and Thomas take the new 2021 Polestar 2 and review it against the market-leading Tesla Model 3. Both are all-wheel drive fully electric cars that have the word performance in their trims. The Polestar 2 recently received an official EPA range rating of 233 miles (375 km) whereas the model 3 performance has 322 miles (518 km) of range. They both command a similar price of high 70s Canadian. But are they worth it? And does the new kid on the block, the Polestar, pose a serious challenge to the Tesla? The boys explore the cars driving dynamics and what they are like to live with every day. Exterior and interior styling comparisons help figure out which one takes it in the looks department, and the back roads do the rest. Watch to see the outcome. SUBSCRIBE!

      Actually the intro for me was enough to immediately stop watching. "I'm proud of you. You finally moved out of the city". Um, what now? Why would you be proud of someone for moving out of the city? As if living in the city is a bad thing? Why? Do these guys look down on people who live in the city? Why? A small throw away line that raises so many questions!
      All this really does is show a bias for the 20th century, suburban, car-centric mind set IMO. As a student of modern day city planning and sustainability, this is a no-no for me.

      I just got back from a polestar test drive and I honestly found interior quality...disappointing. And this was the upgraded version. Many of the materials look much nicer than they feel. And once you start focusing on the details, it sort of falls apart. The grab handles above the passenger front feel very cheap, the vents feel like they will break, the plastic in the rear center vent area hollow and cheap, the wood is very fake feeling/looking in person. The vegan leather seats were looked and felt very nice, but the rest of the materials were not so impressive. Definitely test drive yourself one before judging, you might also be surprised.

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Apparently, the transmission hump contains some of the battery cells, Polestar opted for this rather than raising the floor slightly. If you sit in the back of a Model 3 you'll notice the floor is raised up because of the battery pack, in the front, the battery ends before were your feet are so it's not an issue for the driver.
      Though, I'm not sure how many people have full-sized adults in the rear of any car now, usually it's just kids. I could understand it being a pain though if you did have full-szied adults in the rear seats very often and for long journeys. :)

      Polestar 2 is by far better. Driven both, bought a Polestar 2. Better made, better drive, still fast enough to get you in trouble (and out of it) and better looking. The Tesla I had for a weekend was ok, but once you get past the “ooh it’s so fast” honeymoon (3 or 4 launches btw) you notice the shit build quality, the rolling ride, the empty “student flat” interior and the average looks. Be different. Get a Polestar.

    Test drove both. Bought the polestar. It feels more solid and handles way better. If you really need a car that goes a second faster in a 0-60 drag race, and feel anxiety over not having the range then good for you but most drivers don’t need anywhere near that speed. The polestar in person is absolutely gorgeous and the interior is noticeably nicer. No gauge cluster in the model 3 was also a huge negative for me. There’s no reason to not have it other than cheapness on teslas part. The piano black throughout the polestar is annoying tho and the seat material isn’t my favorite. Still love teslas but the design is aging. Just my two cents.

    You guys crack me up and are a pleasure to watch! As for the cars, I've never had the opportunity to drive any electric vehicle, but I really struggle with the stark interior and unfinished looking front end of the Tesla. I always feel like the Tesla 3 looks like a clay engineering concept model that they painted and sent out the door! The Polestar has a much more finished look to me and car-like interior, but there is no missing the Volvo influence in the styling. Not necessarily a good thing in my book. It doesn't always come down to which one is fastest 0-60 in real world driving, but range is critical in an EV and it sounds like the Polestar has some work to do in that department!

    tbh, the performance pack Polestar 2 with the Ohlins dampers rides too firmly, considerably too firmly, on rough roads. If you soften it to the softest setting maybe it is OK. But out of the factory, it's too stiff. The regular dampers are better in this regard yet the car still handles great. I feel the steering on the Polestar is better because it's not so twitchy at higher speeds. In real life, driving behind slower drivers as we do in everyday driving, these are firm and quiet cars but have very different characteristics. I prefer the European solidity of the Polestar. It feels like what it is: a sporty tuned Volvo.

    As always great review guys. I agree, get the Model 3 Long Range and invest in performance suspension and brakes. Sorted.
    One point to remark is that Polestar is still struggling with the tech, yes the Android is great and the tech will improve, but how truly integrated is it with the driving and drive train components? As was proven, the incidental shutdown of power whilst driving couldn't be fixed OTA. It makes you wonder what else can't be fixed OTA, firmware upgrades etc? Jaguar struggled with this as well. Because there is still a divide between the tech and automotive guys at Volvo. This shows through their "self-driving" system, which is effectively a smart cruise control, developed by the automotive team, not the tech teams. Different goals i guess, but if you want a future proof car, better look at from the ground up EVs. Which polestar simply isn't.

      Tesla aren't really car manufacturers and it shows fully in their cars, they look cheaply made and not well built at all for the price they are asking. Tesla is like a software maker (in which they totally outdo the competition) that started to build cars. So sure, Teslas might be built from the ground up as EVs, the problem with that argument is they're just not build well or to a high standard.
