- This is the first part of our 1500 mile road trip from Mid-Wales to the Eastern Pyrenees and back again, in our Tesla powered Land Rover Defender. When we get there we're going to spend some days testing the off-road capabilities to the limit up in the Pyrenees at the BF Goodrich Wild Camping event.
Massive thanks to BF Goodrich tyres for inviting us along on this epic off-road adventure. It gave us a great opportunity to test how our electric Land Rover would perform not only on a long journey but also on some seriously testing off-road tracks in the mountains of the Pyrenees.
The tyres we're using for this adventure are : www.bfgoodrich...
Your video shows one of the best points of BEV. You can actually hear each other speak. Anyone who's gone any distance at speed in a Land Rover will know that that is almost impossible.
Not always the case. Noise Killer full soundproofing kit in my 110 and super civilised.
Great job! I watched your earlier episodes when you converted the cars. Fascinating! And I’m not even being sarcastic. This channel is bloody brilliant. I’m not a petrol head or even a car guy but the technology fascinates me. It’s like Tomorrow’s World crossed with an eco friendly Top Gear. Our grandchildren will thank us for not making fuel emissions worse than they already are. God bless and god speed to your next adventure in the mountain tracks.
Brilliant. Having seen this vehicle thought the build etc, it’s great to see how practical it is for a proper road trip and off road tour.
I love how much scenery we can see through the drop top, the door sill, the window frame!!! 😂😂😂 Lovely!!!
A truly beautiful landy. Love how you’ve left the floors bare with wooden slats matching wheel!
But then I’m not the one listening to that transmission 😂
There’s pros and cons of having no sound deadening or floor matting in a defender. It looks great and it’s so much easier to clean with a bare floor but you hear EVERYTHING. I tried it in a diesel Defender once - you needed ear Defenders. 🤣😂😆
Did Roscoff to Saint Sebastian in our eNV200 camper a couple of weeks ago, no problems whatsoever, super enjoyable easy road trip
Self conversion?
@@bencole4272 yeah, it's an eNV200 XL high roof LWB, rare beast
Defender of the faith! 😁👍
Very good. 😆👍
@@ElectricClassicCars I nicked it from one of Andy McNab's books, to be honest. But I thought it had a dual meaning here, too - the vehicle and the EVangelist! 😋👍
This video shows two things for me, how well built and engineered your conversions are and secondly how far ahead Tesla are with their charging infrastructure all over the world.
Looking forward to your off road excursions Richard 👍🏴🇪🇸😎
That Camel Trophy Rover in the end is perfect 🤩
Fab vehicle, appears very tight.
Awesome and outstanding as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome. Looking forward to this one. 😊
Fantastic. I would be interesting to compare the running costs between your and Jimmy's. Can't wait for the follow up. Hope you all having a great time.👍👍👍
Brilliant. Looking forward to the next episode.
Wow how quiet is the Deffer with the electric motor ! Love your honesty
We also don’t really plan charging stops anymore. We just take off and when we get to 40% we start looking for the fastest charger with the best amenities. The car is always charged up more than we actually need and we are refreshed! Only possible if the passenger does the searching of course …. When I did a 1000 km round trip by myself pulling a trailer I did plan ahead so as not to waste time unhitching the trailer etc…. That was a piece of cake though!
Speaking of noise and vibration, I’d put a bit of acoustic matting between me and that drivetrain. Other than that, I’m super jelly of that landy.
Looks like you guys are having fun! Enjoy the trip 👍💪✌
What a cracking road trip ! And after seeing Jimmy’s t-shirt I feel the need to head back to Memphis for chicken…
Your definitely wetting my appetite for some long trips in my Tesla powered Land Rover - can't wait! I want to see some of the looks people give you when you plug in at a Supercharger. Oh, and surely in the next episode you could organise an all Land Rover Drag race. You can include the Grenadiers if they don't mind being embarassed as well. 😁
Hey Richard, Love your work 👍
Such a cool Vehicle, loads of fun out in the Bush. But how about some Rock Crawling
That's in the next video.
Been to Darts Farm a few times when my sister lived in Exeter.
Awesome video and such a great job building this Land Rover electric ❤❤❤
Thank you 🤗
Fabulous...
Couple of weeks back did a trip from Holland to Scotland with my home converted electrical spitfire, 2400km+ was super cool! But the charging i up there is prettig bad haha but we managed
Send pics! :)
This is a fine endurance drive for your EV conversion.
Having got an EV through motability I am a convert to EVs although id still live another V8 😅
I'd love to convert my VW T5 to electric, wish it was more affordable to do 😢
I do enjoy your videos. Thanks
Nice one....lok forward to more.. 😊😊
More to come!
Gonna take that ferry in Dec, can't wait. Actually lived in Zaragoza for a few years.
Focus! Pam must have been a bit pissed filming, that or the camera was drinking...
Just wondering if you could install distronic cruise control?
In traffic, it's a godsend
Hey! I live in Zaragoza! 😁😁😁 I would have LOVED to see you in my area 😍😍😍
Next time!
You didn't fancy taking the scenic route through France then
I was hoping you come up the Land Rover Party event near Barcelona this weekend!
I would have loved to but I’m back in the UK now. 😢👍
@@ElectricClassicCars next year. I just want to see the people's faces when an electric Defender turns up 😂
Otherwise they have to wait until I can afford to convert mine.
Your converted Defender gets better miles/kWh than my Rivian! Goes to show how comparing drag coefficients is meaningless without also comparing frontal area. And weight.
My Landy is definitely a lot lighter than a Rivian, and quite a bit smaller too, although the flat front windscreen on the Defender really isn’t aerodynamic at all.
I always get a kick out of people comparing drag coefficients (Cd) and not the CdA (drag coefficient * frontal area).
I didn't realise Tesla chargers were so cheap. Ionity is charging up to 89p in the UK!
Are you at Bassella already ? You are very close to where I live. It would be nice to ser that wonder..
Not any more. We were there last week. It’s a beautiful place. 👍
@@ElectricClassicCars shii... Second time I' ve misded your visit in Catalonia... Hope I get you next time... Or I ' ll have to go to wales...
Ssshh don’t tell everyone about Darts Farm 😂 it’s busy enough as it is! (Semi regular haunt for us for the next door wildlife wetlands etc).
Having road-tripped the defender now, is there anything that’d you change on the build - to make those kind of trips easier like the cruise control?
Now I’ve put the BF Goodrich Trail Terrain tyres on I’m happy with the way it is for long journeys now. 👌
Lol, now all that is needed is windshield cleaning station by the charging stations. Hint, hint.
Have you persuaded Jimmy to upgrade his Defender?
That’s the long game we’re playing. 😆👍
That electric motor sound would drive me nuts. I prefer more subdued sounds.
I prefer the raw experience but most of our customers we install sound deadening and carpets so you can’t hear the motor or road noise. 👍
@@ElectricClassicCars The whining resembles one emitted by very old trolleybus motors. In town it's fine. For long trips - it's too much for me. Before RuZZian war in Ukraine that sound could be experienced traveling the longest trolleybus route in the world: in Crimea from Simferopol to Yalta, 86 km or 53 miles. The sound was typical in Škoda brand built in the beginning of 1960ties.
I assume the ferry wasn't showing the 1972 film. The Poseidon Adventure.
Nope . Titanic. 😆😉👍
Ok listened to more of your program … agree with the 3 hr thing, so multiple D3’s and D4’s shit their pants - including mine they drive so well. How do you fancy a massive challenge and electric motor one of them. Miss my 300tdi and my wallet hates my D4 !
Unfortunately those are a little too modern for our tastes. However, maybe there’s a business opportunity for someone to start converting them to electric. 👍
6:38 Guitar music? Must be Spain!
Thank you Richard for this great video. You keep us so well informed along the way. Really looking forward to the next episode.🤩🏔 All the best to you and yours from Gene in Tennessee.
Glad you enjoyed it
Defender converted🔋🔋🔋
Those Land Rovers not have normal Safety Seat belts, instead of those over the lap type? All good and well bringing/reviving an old classic cars, but throw current basic safety precautions out the window, which is proven to be more safe?
If you play the lotto and win you might invest in some sound deadening material. Myself,
I would invest in 'El Gordo', if that is what it is called.....
Those chargers could take a few months or years to be operative here in Spain based on the experience of recent years😉. Hope not
Your spanish is good enough.
28kWh/100km is Audi eTron consumption, well done.
Yes sir
Range just too small compared to ice but great video
Richard, are there any advantages or disadvantages to using my existing Model Y rwd as a doner to covert to a 4wd camper? Other than bricking a perfectly good Model Y. I'd use your affiliate The Surgery to do the conversation.
Probably better just to buy a secondhand Model 3/Y motor and leave your Model Y alone. Cheaper and simpler. 👍
@ElectricClassicCars Makes sense now that I've heard it from an SME. Thanks.
Probably better to buy and accident damaged Tesla?
Question: Have you thought of building a Land Rover EV using E-Axles so you could lose the Transmission, Transfer-Gearbox and Driveshafts?!? It would be interesting to measure the efficiency improvement and weight loss…🤔
Yes. We looked at it in detail and decided against it for many reasons. There’s no weight savings as you need 2 motors to keep it 4WD and 2 inverters with double the cabling. Also, more things to go wrong. 👍
@@ElectricClassicCars I would have thought the reduced maintenance would have been worth the effort? But, I trust you Gentlemen, you do great work.
1:00 Plymouth is a Yank car brand, why did a Town in UK name there Home after a Yank car? LOL
I’m not going to be that guy. Must resist.
And why did they build the castle so close to the railroad?
Did you pronounce it plim oth?
What app are you using to find and charge non Tesla evs?
The Tesla app. We show this here th-cam.com/video/VZCXEj9eOUg/w-d-xo.html
7:30 the vertical filming, facepalm.
Damn, I thought you and Tim were married!
Is that a stowaway 🕷️ I spy @ 4:15 ? 😧
Just flies on the windscreen. 👍
What's the whine from?
EV haters.
@@gregsierra414😂
Well…
As a owner of a Land Rover Defender 110 HT I can honestly say …
I would LOVE my car to be converted to being a EV …if it where not THAT fuc…. Expensive… 😂😂😂
The whole EV thing would get a big boost if the UK decided to stop having high energy prices. 52p/kwh...oof.
That’s rapid charging costs. Charging at home costs me 7.5p/kWh, still probably more expensive than the US. 🤷♂️😉👍
@@ElectricClassicCarsI was going to suggest you stopped at the Osprey Salmon’s Leap site at Buckfastleigh just outside Plymouth on the way down, but their prices are probably double Teslas and the farm shop would certainly add to the costs
That's relatively cheap for public rapid charging with some asking 75p/kWh. People get suck on the price of public charging when it's really just a ratio calculation with what you get at home, so 90% of the time I get a kWh for 7 pence, 10% it might be 75p, overall it's 14p per kWh. My Enyaq is doing an average of 4mile/kWh, so 3.5p a mile average, or 1/4 of the price of fueling a Toyota Corolla hybrid.
Don't people make a face when they see a Jeep at a supercharger?
I wouldn’t know. I drive a Land Rover. 😆😉👍
Ok sorry. Land Rover😉
I guess a few folk thinking…that b****d gone and parked his Land Rover in a charging space.
3:02 52p/kwh electrical energy : good gawd that is 4.68 quid/L (equivalent) or USD $23.36/US Gallon (equivalent). That is INSANELY expensive energy! Not economical over Petrol or Diesel in the least! (note that residential Electricity is around USD 0.14/kwh in US). A complaint against Energy cost their, not your superb job of EV conversion.....
It is if you knew how much we pay for a gallon of fuel….😂😂😢
You're forgetting that a gas engine might be 20% efficient while the EV is around 95% efficient at turning that energy into forward motion. 80% of your fuel is lost as heat! So that's closer to the £1/L range equivalent
A diesel defender on those roads would do about 19 miles per (UK) gallon, which is 4.18 miles per litre. Average litre of diesel is currently £1.51 in the UK, so about 36p per mile (Moggy’s defender at Tesla rates was 52p per kWh, and 2 miles per kWh, so 26p per mile), and you’d have somewhere around 20p per mile overheads with the ICE version over the EV (the tax, extra engine component servicing & maintenance the EV doesn’t need). About even at Motorway speeds with the highest UK rapid charging prices (around £1 per kWh), EV obviously much cheaper if overnight or renewables charged
£5.20 every 20 miles ..that ain’t cheap at all!
Hello,I’m talking of the Brazil.
You can now stick the long-distance test drive sticker APPROVED👏🏻👍🛻
