  • We go for a little off-road adventure in my Tesla powered Land Rover Defender. There's mud, river crossings, a 0-60 test and some glorious weather and views. All in all a good day out in Mid Wales.

    That was really enjoyable. I admire you for taking your prized possesion and letting it show what its capable of and whats it was built for.
    Im sure the original fitters who assembled this may be long gone, but would be chuffed to see its reinvention as a modern EV.
    If your a reader and like Land Rovers , Id recommend a book called 'Earth My Friend' by Peter Townsend (ex Battle Of Britain ace, was engaged to Princess Margaret, features in The Crown tv series) . He took off in a Land Rover and drove around the world solo in the 50s, amazing story of man and machine and remote regions of the world only a land rover could reach.

Your Defender videos so clearly demonstrate that a BEV is actually the superior option for off roading than ICE vehicles. No snorkel needed for wading, no dust filters for air intake, torque instantly available, no noise and soot spoiling the landscape, no fuzzing about with low and high range, dual shifters, etc. Keep up the good work!.

    Such an awesome machine! Can't wait till I get my 110 done (Tesla Model 3 power). Can't get much better off road suspension than coil sprung 4 link solid axles. No fossil can give you the torque delivery of an electric motor. Perfect combination!

    • @sydneyg007
      @sydneyg007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alanmay7929 Sorry but I have to respectfully disagree. Toyota do make very good Deisel Engines, I think we can agree on that but which Hilux has more torque than Richard's Tesla LDU? Correct me if I am wrong but it's in the order of 636Nm. The Hilux 4litre V6 1GRFE only produces 376Nm. Also, the Tesla torque is produced from 0rpm to about 5000rpm before it starts to drop off. The Hilux torque starts at 0Nm @0rpm and eventually delivers it's 376Nm @3700rpm and then starts dropping off again. As I said NO fossil engine will give you the torque delivery of an electric motor. That's why EV's don't need a gearbox.

    Wow, I'm impressed, that was absolutely brilliant 😃 I love the old Landy, and with that conversion it's fookin fantastic 😊 I was a bit surprised about the water crossing, but I suppose everything has to be waterproof for normal driving on road anyway. I was also surprised by the augmented downhill braking as well, that was brilliant. By fitting that kit it made a great old fourby much, much better, improving its off-road capability. As I said, I'm very impressed ☺I'd hate to think of how much the conversion would cost though 🙄

    This is probably what we’ll have to do at some point to keep our classics on the road. I like the concept, but I’d still like to see better batteries and infrastructure to support electric cars. For now, my Series 2 will stay gasoline powered. I’ve managed to keep a 1960 almost 100% original, so it would pain me to do this to it. Maybe my old Range Rover would be a better candidate. Send me the kit and I’ll install it and let you know what I think😁
