    I also have a 17 year old LR3 that I have had from new. It has done 180,000 miles and has undergone full-scale crash testing by some of my kids. It is a marvelous vehicle and I would certainly trust it on another long road trip. It recently went cross-country from San Francisco to Houston towing a large, full, U-Haul trailer in a couple of days. It didn't miss a beat. They are GREAT vehicles.

    The "MASS AIR FLOW" --- is the sensor that is on the big intake tube, right after the air filter. It has a sensitive little sensor that can get a small piece of lint or bug or piece of grass, etc.. right onto the sensor, and mess it all up. You can pull them off easily, and look down inside it-- and you'll see a little resistor looking thing -- make sure there isn't anything obvious on that thing. and you can clean it out with some spray that evaporates, and it can work fine again many times. Sometimes, you can just unplug the MAF, and the car will run off of a pre-set default and still run really well, and get you home. That's a good test for them too -- just to unplug it and see if it clears things up.
    Edit: never mind -- you already did it. lol

    Flatbed pickups are very common for ranching and Sheridan, WY is a large ranching community. Your flatbed videos are the reason I subscribed.
    Also, the giant hay stack that you seen are an older technic used by ranchers. Our area calls them Beaver Stacks but I'm sure they have many names. They use a tall hay ramp with a forked sledge to make them the size of a barn. They start by push a large pile of hay together then move the ramp into position. Next they will push hay into the sledge and pull the sledge up to the top of the ramp where it falls over the edge onto the stack. Workers with pitch forks will start forming the top of the stack. Then the final layer of hay will be weaved into a dome in order to shed water.

    Incredibly nice video, thanks for taking us along! And what beautiful landscape you went through.
    The shocking part of the summary for me was the fact that you considered 12.76 l/100 km to be reasonable and comparatively low. Also fillng the tank with would cost abnout double here in Europe. Most cares around here, even the big ones, won't break 10 l/100 km. A very common (small) car is likely to be more around 5-6 l/100 km (~40 mpg). That would obviously have less space, being small and all, and won't be an offroad vehicle, but here there is literally zero reason to have an offroad vehicle. I was very surprised to learn that you have sort of trails through national parks that recommend or eve require truely offroad capable vehicles.

      When you say, "here there is literally zero reason to have an offroad vehicle" I assume you are missing out those people 1. who need them for work: Farmers, builders, surveyors, telecoms installers etc etc. 2. Those who pull things such as horses, karts, boats and 3. Those who like to go on green lanes and dirt tracks simply as a hobby. The chap above is right. You do need to get out more.

    • @TheCreat
      @TheCreat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alan_Mac point 1 and to a degree 2, fine. I thought it was pretty clear I want taking about those people or use card, but whatever. I was taking about people who do not need it with work, and while true off-road vehicles can be used for 2, they aren't a necessity (there's plenty of vehicles that work for pulling stuff). But that was my point, that the category 3 basically doesn't exist over here. Not saying it's completely nonexistent, but at best it's rare. I actually checked to find something like this is my state, there isn't even one.

    For anyone who has never been or is planning to come to Colorado. The great sand dunes national park is one of the most beautiful places you can see. It is simply unreal. The surrounding area in the San Luis valley is also beautiful. There are waterfalls and some fairly extreme 14ers right near by as well. Gorgeous place.
    (Edit)
    Waldo you knocked it out of the park with your stops. It is awesome to see you stop at places my family has spent so many hours enjoying together.

    Those codes that popped up in New Mexico are probably because you drove in from such a lower altitude (ABQ is about the same altitude as Denver, CO). When I first moved to Albuquerque from Arizona, my '06 CR-V was running really rich (didn't trip codes, but you could definitely tell). I think it took a few days for the engine to readjust to the sudden change in altitude, but it was fine.

    • @terrylaw18
      @terrylaw18 ปีที่แล้ว

      At first reading of your comment my thought was that the system should adjust for the difference in altitude. Which it probably would in actual operation. But the computer would also detect an issue with long term fuel trim not being correct resulting in codes and cel on. I would think designers would allow for this but there would have to be a transition period resulting in the condition you described.

    • @ThatCivilGuy
      @ThatCivilGuy ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The cracks in the resonator are a very common vacuum leak source on these. These cracks would have been present since before the trip, but the LT fuel trim was able to adjust for them, thus no CEL. However the change in altitude could have been enough to tip this balance. When I drive steep passes in the western US (>2000’ at 5%) from sea level at interstate speeds I can detect a knock unless I slow down a bit in my LR3, giving the ECU a chance to retard the timing as I gain elevation.

    I honestly enjoyed this video more then most. I loved the cut scenes and it specifically brought back memories of my own travel in some areas. What I didn't appreciate was the comments about certain areas that you might not really know much about. The blame of people from California is probably the most common misconception, everyone has bad apples and its silly to compare or assume. North Dakota and some of the areas you didn't prefer were actually fun to see. I was hoping you would take the Range Rover on this trip, but I understand that their were some projects that needed completion first. I would like to see more of the videos in the future, with an open mind and some research behind each stop. Glad the trip was safe and the land rover made it back in one piece!
