  • Mizuno has long been known for its players irons and its MP franchise has been wildly popular for decades. Brand new from Mizuno are the MP-20 Blade and MP-20 MMC irons, both of which were developed for better golfers. In this exclusive video, 2nd Swing staff members Thomas Campbell and Andrew Mahowald had the chance to test both models using Trackman 4, and they came away highly impressed. The MP-20 Blade is a traditional muscleback design that was created to provide low-handicappers with the control, precision, and feel that they demand in an iron, while the MP-20 MMC irons are a players cavity back option that will offer more ball speed and forgiveness in the long and mid irons thanks to the use of tungsten weighting. The Mizuno MP-20 Blade and MMC irons are available for pre-order beginning Sept. 5 and more information about each model will be available at www.2ndswing.c... on that date. Really useful review thanks. I have HMB, MMC and blades but going to swap out the HMBs. Really useful to see the numbers when hit well

    I recently got fitted by an English pro (here in Cologne, Germany) with the Mizuno swing DNA. I played JPX 825Pro irons before, and it`s just amazing how good these new MP20 MMC irons are - I have much better numbers, the ball flies further, the ballfight is stronger and they are a pleasure to hit. Spinnumbers are good which depends on different factors.
    The fitting:
    The swing DNA suggested three shafts, and it was the shaft which was recommended as no. 2 which was great for me (Project LZ 6.0). It was interesting to see that the shaft which was no.1 (True Temper) did not really convince the pro in terms of spin numbers, so the swing DNA is a great tool to find three possibly very good shafts for your game in minutes but it is important to compare the three suggestions. It is a great and totally convincing tool because there are just so many shaft options. Shaft no.2 is a super shaft for my swing!
    Played with the set today and am just angry that I haven't changed clubs earlier.

    MMC half a club longer because it’s half a club stronger (2*) in Loft....

    IMHO the difference in solidness of hit (smash factor) is the shaft -- each head was hit with a different iron shaft -- at least that is what I have found anytime I have been fit -- find the shaft first then the head -- just my 2 cents. The proper weight, stiffness and bend profile helps you time your swing properly.

      Hello. Thanks for the comment. Yes the golf shaft definitely matters, and results are player dependent. Part of our fitting process involves testing heads with the same golf shaft first, then diving deeper into shaft testing. This video was designed to be an informative video on the new MP20 line in time for pre sale. Unfortunately Mizuno only sent us each club with their stock X stiff shaft before we had the fitting heads in hand. Therefore were unable to hit with the exact same golf shaft.

    Jacob had asked about a 6* gap 32degree 7iron and 38 degree 8iron, with a combo set. I suggest that 6 degrees may be a little too much of a gap. Typically every degree of loft is about 3 yards. We want a 10-15 yard gap between each club.

    I thought each MP 20 model had a layer of copper plating, not just the blade?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's correct. All three MP-20 models have the copper layer. Our guys misspoke there when referencing the blade testing that the tour players did with the new irons. Sorry about the confusion.

    Not sure how this is a true comparison since there are different shafts being used.

    There were a couple of questions I didn't get to before the live chat ended: Curt had asked How the P790 and HMB compare: "Both P790 and HMB are in a very similar category. Incredible distance gains, fly higher with forgiveness. I would recommend coming in to get fit by hitting both clubs with the same golf shaft to test which you prefer"

    My 15 year old daughter hc 2 was fitted for MB’s 5-pw at Bearwood Lakes yesterday at one of their Mizuno tour truck events. We had no intentions of auditioning a set of blades but they’re surprisingly forgiving and deserve the ‘nothing feels quite like a...’ tag. Couldn’t bring ourselves to blend the set either, once you’ve dialled up the correct shaft using their 3D shaft optimiser it’s difficult to consider either MMC and HMB as long Irons when the MB’s look & feel so good - for reference we currently use a 3 year old set of Nike Vapor Fly irons paired with vokey wedges, which we’re also considering replacing with their T20 range as these have a very similar look & feel to the irons

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good stuff Gary. Did you end up going with a full set of the blades? For as compact as the MP-20 blade is, we continue to hear that people are finding the long and mid irons pretty manageable. Thanks.

      @@2ndswing We haven't completely made up our minds and will return back to the Mizuno Performance Centre for a re-fit in their swing room and take a couple of the MB's (and maybe a MMC & HMB) out on the course to hit some real shots off the grass, to hopefully confirm the dry ball data. I've reflected on the Mizuno wedge and can confirm we tested the T7 in a 58 with the same shaft we settled on in the irons, and again the sound and feel of these clubs was something we've never experienced before. The dilemma we face now is should we continue to test other irons to compare, which can become very confusing for a 15 year old, maybe we'll delay this decision until after our next visit to Mizuno to make sure 🤔 but it also gives us another chance to think about a blended set. The lowest we would go is 5i, which they didn't have but tried a 4i which came off the face like a bullet

    How would bending 2 degrees stronger effect the blades? I wonder if a video would help us with the effects of doing so, might be cool and valuable to the fitter and player?

  • @plusfour1
    @plusfour1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    FWIW the MP20 is a muscle back, one step up (or back) from a true blade. Nonetheless, we're looking at the top 10% of golfers who could play them effectively.

    Why did you use different shafts in the 2 clubs?

  • @toddglass8292

    Very instructional video, hoping someone can help me with a question. I'm living abroad and options are scarce. I'm 90% sold on these Mizunos but no fitters here have them, I've been told by a top 100 ranked fitter who only has KZG irons that I can get the shaft fit on KZG and it will translate well to these Mizunos because the head weight is almost identical. How correct is that, and what are my best options and or questions I should be asking at the fitting in this scenario. Thanks.

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Todd, thanks for watching and for your comment. Our knowledge of KZG is more limited, as it has not been a part of our fitting options. With that said, KZG does built their clubs with similar construction methods and the head shapes do look similar. Mizuno's most popular trait is the feel in each iron model -- and in the MP-20 models, they improved on that feel even further by adding a copper layer beneath the finish. If you're a feel player, hitting the MP-20s first somehow would be our recommendation. At the very least, it would be good to get an opinion from an expert who has hit both brands and can offer a break down of how each one feels.

      @@2ndswing Thanks for taking the time to answer, really helpful. I'm just wondering how well a shaft translates to similar irons given the same swing. I know you don't know kzg, but for other brands is it similar performance brand to brand? I'm choosing between the t100 and mp20 mmc, can hit a t100 but can't get my hands on Mizunos as easily here. I really don't know if I categorize myself as a feel player, I've had the same set of 690cb's since 2002.

      You do if you have something to prove. Lol. In fact, top players hit scoring clubs 90% or less because they're way more accurate that way. Hard to watch this dude honestly. And his wing man keeps complimenting him. It's about the clubs, could care less about what a great ball striker Mr Heart Attack is.
