Learning of Taylor Hawkins passing, I came back to watch his and Daves induction speech of Rush into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Why? Because the first time I saw this video, what stood out to me was how genuinely excited Taylor was. Watch the part where Dave is calling out all of Rush’s albums and look at Taylor‘s reaction. He’s no longer a respected and successful rock ‘n’ roll drummer, he’s a 14-year-old kid watching one of his favorite bands get the recognition they deserve. To me this clearly demonstrates Taylor‘s genuine love of music. Rest in peace Taylor.

Rush is the reason I didn't kill myself. A friend of mine introduced me to their music years ago, and said "How can you be depressed while listening to such awesome, happy music?". He was right. I listened to Rush nonstop, and Geddy and Alex became my musical muses for compositions. I don't play bass anymore, but I'm still alive.
My cousin Mark, a gifted drummer died of leukemia at 19 years old in 1981. I can still hear him and his band playing Rush music. Thank you for the memories. 🥁

My mother would not allow me to because “girls don’t play drums.” Watching and listening to you play gave me great joy. I am so glad that your music will live on. R.I.P Taylor Hawkins. He was a fan as much as he was a musician. Neil’s lyrics felt like my journal I never wrote. Taylor felt like my friend I never met.
Famous people die every day, and we may recall them fondly for a moment, and then go on with our day. Others, we may even feel a twinge of sadness for a moment. Then, we go on with our lives. ‘Tis a rare thing, indeed, to have a visceral reaction when someone in the spotlight leaves us. When I first saw Neil Peart had died, from a Rolling Stone article posted on Facebook, my reaction was one of horror and disbelief. I felt sick to my stomach, yet for the briefest of moments, I held out hope this was a mistake. A few minutes later, I knew it wasn’t. I cried like a child for half an hour straight. Then, I felt numb for the rest of the night. My gut hurt. My heart ached. My head tried to wrap itself around the reality that Neil Peart was gone. I felt blindsided. We all did. “I didn’t even know he was sick.” It may sound corny to say, but without Rush, I am not the person I am today. I started following them when Moving Pictures came out. I was about ten. I’ve seen them several times in concert. Had all their albums on cassette. Now have them all on CD, the first issues, then the remasters. Rush touched something in me when my mind was just beginning to truly think. When I first started to question things. The complexity of their music grabbed me. The humor in their videos and live shows just further endeared them to me. I mean, who puts a rotisserie chicken spit, or washer and driers on stage? Their joie de vivre was infectious. Their “nerdiness”, if you will, was omnipresent. They wore it on their sleeves like a badge of courage. They never cared about “being cool”. Never wrote songs about partying and getting laid. They cared about making great works, the kind of music they wanted to hear. And God Bless them for that. There are many followers in this world. Rush decided early on that they would be leaders. If they wanted to make a 12 minute song with 7 time changes, they did it. If they wanted to title a song movement “The Temples of Syrinx”, or pay homage to Ayn Rand’s Objectivism, they did it. When the ignorant protested, they weathered the storm, and then continued doing whatever they wanted. When they changed direction, or tweaked their style, sonically, these alterations were done out of a need to stretch musically, to experiment, and not out of some need to appease others. And that is why they have built up such a fanatically loyal following over the years. The band, besides being as musically gifted as any that has ever set music to tape, record or compact disc, had fucking integrity. Their art meant everything to them. They didn’t write songs to have hits. They created music that stirred our passions, and we were fortunate enough to go along on a tremendous adventure for nearly fifty years. And Neil Peart’s lyrics challenged me; it nurtured that big muscle between my ears. He made me think about class struggle. About conformity in society. About the lure of the almighty dollar. He stirred my imagination. “Wait a minute, trees don’t talk unless they’re Ents. And they certainly don’t form unions. What in sam hell is he talking about?” Hard rock and prog had its own Bob Dylan. The Big Money. The Trees. Subdivisions. Distant Early Warning. Freewill. This wasn’t a band just singing, “hey, let’s party, and smash beer cans on our heads.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that. No, this was a band that crafted little sonic masterpieces. This was a band that aspired to be something more. Something great. To borrow from the movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact: “something wonderful”. Three guys from the Toronto (ahem, Toron’o) area. The drummer that simply couldn’t be human behind that kit. There’s just no fucking way two hands and two feet did THAT. He was a machine. Certainly a percussionist sent from the future, when perfection was actually attainable. The guitarist-“The Bag”, the prankster, the virtuoso that created endless layers with six strings, and could absolutely rip off a solo that made the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up. The bassist, singing while ripping off the most technically complex bass lines imaginable. Or, was it ripping off the most technically complex bass lines while singing? When he wasn’t singing, and playing bass, he played the keyboards. And when he was singing, and playing bass, he was playing pedals with his feet. And when he was playing bass, but not singing or playing pedals, he was skipping around the stage like a teenager. Even at 60+. Scientist that contend there is no such thing as the perfect organism have never seen Rush in concert. And when they broke up, I tricked my mind into thinking, “oh, one day in a year or two, they’ll play a couple more shows. Maybe not a huge tour, but certainly a few concerts. They’ll certainly play in Toronto. Hell, I’ve never been there. That would be the perfect excuse to go. If I’m truly lucky, I’ll fly up for a show during the summer, go to see a Blue Jays home game the next day, and bump into Geddy Lee in the hot dog line. I could die right there a happy man.” Sadly, that never happened, and the realization that Neil lost a courageous battle with brain cancer now explains the break up. And, he fought this battle the way he lived his life. Though he lived in the limelight, away from the concert venue, he was a very private man. And I respected that. Geddy and Alex were happy to meet us goofy fans, and listen to us tell them for the 31,355th time, “dude, the first time I saw you was during the Power Windows tour.” Ever gracious, they’d talk with any fan that had the courage to approach. Neil was different. But he shared so much of his genius with us...he fought through pain...pain of the heart after losing first his wife, then his daughter...the pain of aging. Arthritis for starters. We were lucky that he gave so much. His interaction with the fans was his brilliant words. His passion behind the kit. Now, he’s gone, and that realization is as soul crushing as it gets. Knowing I will never see these three wonderful gentlemen together on a lighted stage again breaks my heart. It’s greedy to wish there had been more. I know it. But Rush were the very best, and we’ll never see their likes again. God bless you, Neil. While we mourn your loss, we all know that you’re in a better place. There’s no more pain, and you’re with your loved ones again. Thank you for enriching my life. For enriching ALL our lives.
This is as beautiful and heartfelt as any published tribute I've read anywhere, even those written by "professional journalists"! You captured everything about the joy of growing up, and old, with Rush, and to explain the grief we feel, and why. Thank you!
Thank you, guys. I greatly appreciate your kind words, and I am truly humbled that my little tribute has resonated with a few of my fellow Rush fans. You all made my day. We’re all in the same boat suffering together. And that hurt isn’t going away anytime soon. My life, and Rush’s music, are inextricably woven together. Unless I avoid TH-cam, my CD collection, ignore my DVD and blu-Ray collection, and stay completely away from my iPhone-not hearing or seeing our beloved power trio is an impossibility. But you know what? Even though listening to their music is an exercise in melancholy right now, because it makes me think of what Neil had to go through, as well as the realization that Rush is truly no more, I wouldn’t want to go even a few days without being able to crank up The Camera Eye, or Resist. A Passage to Bangkok or La Villa Strangiato. I can’t race down the highway and not listen to Red Barchetta. It’s de rigueur. One day, God willing many years from now, Geddy and Alex are going to Exit Stage Left, and join their brother in that big concert venue in the sky. We are all mortal, after all. But as long as I draw breath, no matter what I face, I have their glorious music to help me get through it. We all do. About five years ago, I broke my left leg. Fell and shattered the femur into six pieces. I was in the hospital for nearly two months, as I got a bad infection during surgery. That included a long rehab period learning how to walk again. I was miserable, and in pain. I was in ICU, and quarantined. But thankfully, being the dinosaur I am, I had a Sony discman, and my Rush CDs were parked next to my guitar and amp in my bedroom. I asked my folks to get them for me (this is before I bought my first iPhone). When I was in agony, I had 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure, and one of my favorite albums of theirs, Hold Your Fire (side 2, especially) to get me through it. They figured that would be enough. I’d have needed an orderly to bring my entire collection, haha. Every time they came in to do an injection in my abdomen to make sure I wouldn’t get a blood clot, I had my music. When the pain meds wore off for a spell, when they needed to change the IV, or do an x-Ray to check how the bone was healing with the titanium plate and 12 screws...Geddy, Alex and Neil were there with me. When they had to open the soft cast, and inspect the 8 inch incision to make sure there were no signs of infection at the actual surgical site, I only had to make it through a few minutes of discomfort before I could escape into Xanadu. Somehow, Rush made the time go faster. I stopped thinking about the pain, and started to quietly sing to myself. Being in quarantine can be a lonely time. When the few people allowed to come in did so, they were behind masks, and gowns. But I had By Tor and the Snow Dog resting at the foot of my hospital bed to keep me company. When it was dinner time, and Chinese was on the menu, I had Kubla Khan to help me with the Chopsticks. Tom Sawyer regaled me with tales of his hi-jinx with his buddy Huck. The Analog Kid and The New World Man snuck in, and did a killer father-son vaudeville routine. Who told them about my affinity for silent film era movies? But, as I’ve seen since Neil passed, we Rush fans are pretty damned amazing at circling the wagons. We’re resilient. We take care of each other, and I would like to think we offer a bit of comfort to Neil’s family, as well as Geddy and Alex, too. I sincerely hope that is the case. So, it still hurts. Any time I hear a snippet of a Rush song, no matter where I am-with my window rolled down at a traffic intersection, I hear “Limelight” two cars in front of me-it’s hard all over again. But at the same time, I’m touched to see the level of respect being afforded the band, and their genius with the sticks. I’m a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. They played this past Sunday, and got their butts handed to them by the San Francisco 49ers. One game short of the Super Bowl. Again. Four times that I counted (and maybe more, when I went to get a drink, or to the restroom) FOX played Rush leading into their commercial breaks. No words were spoken. But, they didn’t need to say anything. The best tribute that they could have come up with was to simply play their music. Those of us that know every little riff, every word, every South Park “Lil’ Rush” or Three Stooges concert intro...those of us that could sketch no fewer than 20 hairstyle changes between the guys over the years (it’s “long hair 70s rocker Alex” and “synth period Geddy” with the long hair in a pony tail”.jamming out to start of The Trees. What “do” will Neil be sporting?), those of us that play air guitar AND bass, and drum at a frantic pace, hands flailing about as we try to decide if Neil was actually an alien with two invisible hands-our job now is to educate the next generation. To pass on Rush’s legacy, just as the sacred responsibility of protecting the Grail fell to the Knights of the Crusade. We are charged with ensuring those youngsters that are just now starting to use their noggins get exposed to this wonderful music, and Neil Peart’s lyrical mastery. That, I think, is the greatest way we can honor OUR band, and Neil’s memory. They did the work. They did the hard part. Now it’s our turn to pick up the ball, and run with it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
@@theaterdreamer You have an amazing gift for writing. I sit here with my allergies (I have allergies?) deeply affecting me as I read what you just wrote while Time Stand Still plays on my iPod. For the first week after the announcement (it came the day after my birthday) I was numb to it. Now for the last week it's full on grief with it manifesting itself in obsession as I listen to Rush exclusively (I did the same with Chris Cornell for about six months straight) remembering where I was in my life when their music was released, that they were the first concert I attended in 1984 thanks to winning tickets off the local radio station in the hopes that I would be able to take this girl that I went to school with, scouring TH-cam for interviews and noting the date of the interview for anything of significance, watching their RnR HOF induction, watching Beyond The Lighted Stage and thoroughly enjoying the long take of the three of them having dinner and seeing how much they enjoy being in each other's company after all these years. Just a few things that I've done thus far. There are far bigger Rush fans out there than myself (like you) but I am a fan of theirs nonetheless and like so many others, their music has been, and will continue to be, part of the soundtrack of my life.
Dave Grohl did such a superb introduction for such a phenomenal rock band, such as "Rush!" I like the beginning clip photos of when "Rush" started. I bow down to them. They really deserve it! I've always loved, and still do, appreciate them though out all their years.
Dave and Taylor are practically as much music fanatics as they are artists. That's what I love about most of these Hall of Fame speeches. You have a big artist/band talk about how they were inspired by or worked with the people they are inducting and show their complete knowledge of the artists/bands being inducted.
Oh they've done okay lol... honestly I wonder if they would have such a storied and legendary career had they catered to the business push and direction of popular music.
I would say it's fitting because both Dave And Taylor are drummers. When I was a teenager, and almost every friend I had played an instrument, there was no concensus on who was the best guitarist, singer, bassist or keyboardist. But Every single drummer I knew said Niel was the best rock drummer.
Guy Fawkes not really. Heart was inducted by Chris Cornell on the same night. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam played with them on stage.
Watching this now is doubly sad. Neil’s gone, and just 23 hours ago, Taylor Hawkins died in Bogota. One of my best friends said earlier today that Dave and Taylor were the last true rock stars, and I think he was absolutely right. Look at them here. Inseparable, like brothers. Taylor’s enthusiasm for, well, everything in life, was utterly infections. As my heart aches thinking of the family he left behind, the pain they, Dave and the other members of Foo Fighters feel, as well as their friends and extended family, and their legions of fans ;of which I count myself one), I take solace knowing that Taylor and Neil are absolutely rocking out behind their kits together tonight, playing on the biggest “lighted stage”. RIP, Professor. And RIP, Taylor. Seeing both you guys in concert are treasured memories I’ll never forget.

They were the first band that I ever saw live. It was 1977 when they were the opening act for Aerosmith. They had just released A Farewell to kings. They blew Aerosmith right off the stage!
RusH was composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands. Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
ANY rock band who has been around for over 25 years, and are STILL actively recording, touring, and still influencing tons of younger bands (such as Rush), deserve to be inducted. Kiss JUST THIS WEEK finally got inducted. Granted, I prefer Rush over Kiss, but THAT'S ridiculous that it took so long - for BOTH bands!!
I'm still bewildered, confused and disgusted that Abba, The Beastie Boys and Grandmaster Flash (to name just a few) were even inducted, let alone before Rush (or Kiss).

As I've heard mention, it should have been called the Music Hall of Fame, with perhaps different wings for metal, pop, folk, R&B and so on. Might have clarified things a bit, but anytime the process of selection is determined by the vote of a select (and in my opinion biased) group, a lot of people are going to be upset.
Well first thing is the Beastie Boys were and are a very big deal in the music world/industry. Just look at the style of music they had made. Is it rap? Is it rock? No it's the mother and father to bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and many other bands that have mixed the 2 types of music. So for anybody to say they don't deserve to be in the rrholf just doesn't know anything about the Beastie Boys. Not saying you said that because I agree Rush should have been in long before them. Now KISS i don't know so much. Is the rock n roll hof about how much money you made? Lets be honest the biggest attraction to Kiss was the make up for kids like me that were from the 70's. I have to say I still listen to everything I ever liked no matter how much out of date the music may be. Now Kiss is the only band I don't listen to and can look back and say these guys were not good at all. Paul Stanley quite possibly one of the worst singers ever (my opinion) though. The best part of the band had left many years ago. Obviously that is all just my opinion. Only have 2 more words to say Freddie Mercury!!!
Now that's an introduction! Thank you Neil, Geddy, and Alex for all of the great timeless music and memories that you gave to myself and millions of others. Sadly, with Neil's passing, as well as, Eddie Van Halen's recent passing, the year 2020 feels like the end of an era. Their great artistic abilities and talents will live on in their albums and videos, but there is still a definite void.

Seeing Rush live is like listening to there albums. There music is so tight that on stage,you know they never sold out. They should of been inducted into the hall of fame way before 2013.

The world lost a huge influence on rock n roll and along with air drummers like myself. We didn't lose just probably the best drummer of all time, but we lost one of the best bands of all time. Thank you all for 40 years you gave us! First time I heard Rush I knew I wanted to study rock and roll. And that was because of Rush. So, I thank you 3 for everything that you gave us! Long live Rush!
I was very sad to hear the news on Neal Peart's passing. He was an incredible drummer and had some awesome riffs. My dad and I were very lucky to have seen Rush perform live in 1989 during the Presto Tour in San Antonio, Texas. The band totally rocked and the special effects, lighting and pyrotechnics were amazing. This is a real sad loss and he will be missed.
First saw Rush in 1978 for the "A Farewell to Kings" tour and most recently last week for R40. Got to say, those frost-bitten Canadian boys know how to put on a show.
Hey, you're too quick to criticize. I've never lived outside of Canada. Geddy Lee once referred to himself, Neil and Alex as "frost bitten Canadian boys", in reference to all the years playing small industrial towns and traveling in a tour bus with poor heating.
The "Working Man's" Band! I'm not criticizing RRHOF or trying to decide who should get in before or after somebody else; it's just a great tribute to a band that can rival anybody, then and now; on musicianship, WITHOUT all the drama, arrests, blood transfusions, and cancelled shows!! They take time to meet fans and sign autographs (Except the Drummer and he has his reasons) and put on a hell of a show!! Good job on the intro, too! Your right Dave is always there and I appreciate that! A professional like him and Taylor are still fans!
I've never bothered to watch a ceremony EXCEPT this one! It was an amazing day, not afraid to admit I shed a tear of happiness for the guys! THANK YOU RUSH. It's 2019 and I still love watching it all. RUSH NATION !!! Might I add Blah blah blah, blah blah!
God I love how live, when they start the first verse of Limelight, so not rushed, just let it breath, just riding with it. I can't tell you how many shit gigs I've done where my number one worry is "let's not speed it up"... these guys were so home on stage.
Still think RUSH should not have been inducted, not that they don’t deserve it, but for the simple fact that they transcend and are far above and beyond whatever accolades and awards there are for music, musicians, and gentlemen!!! Greatest rock band EVER!!!

Cocaine and booze
Famous people die every day, and we may recall them fondly for a moment, and then go on with our day. Others, we may even feel a twinge of sadness for a moment. Then, we go on with our lives. ‘Tis a rare thing, indeed, to have a visceral reaction when someone in the spotlight leaves us.
When I first saw Neil Peart had died, from a Rolling Stone article posted on Facebook, my reaction was one of horror and disbelief. I felt sick to my stomach, yet for the briefest of moments, I held out hope this was a mistake. A few minutes later, I knew it wasn’t. I cried like a child for half an hour straight. Then, I felt numb for the rest of the night. My gut hurt. My heart ached. My head tried to wrap itself around the reality that Neil Peart was gone. I felt blindsided. We all did.
“I didn’t even know he was sick.”
It may sound corny to say, but without Rush, I am not the person I am today. I started following them when Moving Pictures came out. I was about ten. I’ve seen them several times in concert. Had all their albums on cassette. Now have them all on CD, the first issues, then the remasters. Rush touched something in me when my mind was just beginning to truly think. When I first started to question things. The complexity of their music grabbed me. The humor in their videos and live shows just further endeared them to me. I mean, who puts a rotisserie chicken spit, or washer and driers on stage? Their joie de vivre was infectious. Their “nerdiness”, if you will, was omnipresent. They wore it on their sleeves like a badge of courage. They never cared about “being cool”. Never wrote songs about partying and getting laid. They cared about making great works, the kind of music they wanted to hear. And God Bless them for that. There are many followers in this world. Rush decided early on that they would be leaders. If they wanted to make a 12 minute song with 7 time changes, they did it. If they wanted to title a song movement “The Temples of Syrinx”, or pay homage to Ayn Rand’s Objectivism, they did it. When the ignorant protested, they weathered the storm, and then continued doing whatever they wanted. When they changed direction, or tweaked their style, sonically, these alterations were done out of a need to stretch musically, to experiment, and not out of some need to appease others. And that is why they have built up such a fanatically loyal following over the years. The band, besides being as musically gifted as any that has ever set music to tape, record or compact disc, had fucking integrity. Their art meant everything to them. They didn’t write songs to have hits. They created music that stirred our passions, and we were fortunate enough to go along on a tremendous adventure for nearly fifty years.
And Neil Peart’s lyrics challenged me; it nurtured that big muscle between my ears. He made me think about class struggle. About conformity in society. About the lure of the almighty dollar. He stirred my imagination.
“Wait a minute, trees don’t talk unless they’re Ents. And they certainly don’t form unions. What in sam hell is he talking about?”
Hard rock and prog had its own Bob Dylan.
The Big Money. The Trees. Subdivisions. Distant Early Warning. Freewill. This wasn’t a band just singing, “hey, let’s party, and smash beer cans on our heads.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that. No, this was a band that crafted little sonic masterpieces. This was a band that aspired to be something more. Something great. To borrow from the movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact: “something wonderful”. Three guys from the Toronto (ahem, Toron’o) area. The drummer that simply couldn’t be human behind that kit. There’s just no fucking way two hands and two feet did THAT. He was a machine. Certainly a percussionist sent from the future, when perfection was actually attainable. The guitarist-“The Bag”, the prankster, the virtuoso that created endless layers with six strings, and could absolutely rip off a solo that made the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up. The bassist, singing while ripping off the most technically complex bass lines imaginable. Or, was it ripping off the most technically complex bass lines while singing? When he wasn’t singing, and playing bass, he played the keyboards. And when he was singing, and playing bass, he was playing pedals with his feet. And when he was playing bass, but not singing or playing pedals, he was skipping around the stage like a teenager. Even at 60+.
Scientist that contend there is no such thing as the perfect organism have never seen Rush in concert.
And when they broke up, I tricked my mind into thinking, “oh, one day in a year or two, they’ll play a couple more shows. Maybe not a huge tour, but certainly a few concerts. They’ll certainly play in Toronto. Hell, I’ve never been there. That would be the perfect excuse to go. If I’m truly lucky, I’ll fly up for a show during the summer, go to see a Blue Jays home game the next day, and bump into Geddy Lee in the hot dog line. I could die right there a happy man.”
Sadly, that never happened, and the realization that Neil lost a courageous battle with brain cancer now explains the break up. And, he fought this battle the way he lived his life. Though he lived in the limelight, away from the concert venue, he was a very private man. And I respected that. Geddy and Alex were happy to meet us goofy fans, and listen to us tell them for the 31,355th time, “dude, the first time I saw you was during the Power Windows tour.” Ever gracious, they’d talk with any fan that had the courage to approach. Neil was different. But he shared so much of his genius with us...he fought through pain...pain of the heart after losing first his wife, then his daughter...the pain of aging. Arthritis for starters. We were lucky that he gave so much. His interaction with the fans was his brilliant words. His passion behind the kit.
Now, he’s gone, and that realization is as soul crushing as it gets. Knowing I will never see these three wonderful gentlemen together on a lighted stage again breaks my heart. It’s greedy to wish there had been more. I know it. But Rush were the very best, and we’ll never see their likes again.
God bless you, Neil. While we mourn your loss, we all know that you’re in a better place. There’s no more pain, and you’re with your loved ones again.

We’re all in the same boat suffering together. And that hurt isn’t going away anytime soon. My life, and Rush’s music, are inextricably woven together. Unless I avoid TH-cam, my CD collection, ignore my DVD and blu-Ray collection, and stay completely away from my iPhone-not hearing or seeing our beloved power trio is an impossibility. But you know what? Even though listening to their music is an exercise in melancholy right now, because it makes me think of what Neil had to go through, as well as the realization that Rush is truly no more, I wouldn’t want to go even a few days without being able to crank up The Camera Eye, or Resist. A Passage to Bangkok or La Villa Strangiato. I can’t race down the highway and not listen to Red Barchetta. It’s de rigueur. One day, God willing many years from now, Geddy and Alex are going to Exit Stage Left, and join their brother in that big concert venue in the sky. We are all mortal, after all. But as long as I draw breath, no matter what I face, I have their glorious music to help me get through it. We all do. About five years ago, I broke my left leg. Fell and shattered the femur into six pieces. I was in the hospital for nearly two months, as I got a bad infection during surgery. That included a long rehab period learning how to walk again. I was miserable, and in pain. I was in ICU, and quarantined. But thankfully, being the dinosaur I am, I had a Sony discman, and my Rush CDs were parked next to my guitar and amp in my bedroom. I asked my folks to get them for me (this is before I bought my first iPhone). When I was in agony, I had 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure, and one of my favorite albums of theirs, Hold Your Fire (side 2, especially) to get me through it. They figured that would be enough. I’d have needed an orderly to bring my entire collection, haha. Every time they came in to do an injection in my abdomen to make sure I wouldn’t get a blood clot, I had my music. When the pain meds wore off for a spell, when they needed to change the IV, or do an x-Ray to check how the bone was healing with the titanium plate and 12 screws...Geddy, Alex and Neil were there with me. When they had to open the soft cast, and inspect the 8 inch incision to make sure there were no signs of infection at the actual surgical site, I only had to make it through a few minutes of discomfort before I could escape into Xanadu. Somehow, Rush made the time go faster. I stopped thinking about the pain, and started to quietly sing to myself. Being in quarantine can be a lonely time. When the few people allowed to come in did so, they were behind masks, and gowns. But I had By Tor and the Snow Dog resting at the foot of my hospital bed to keep me company. When it was dinner time, and Chinese was on the menu, I had Kubla Khan to help me with the Chopsticks. Tom Sawyer regaled me with tales of his hi-jinx with his buddy Huck. The Analog Kid and The New World Man snuck in, and did a killer father-son vaudeville routine. Who told them about my affinity for silent film era movies?
But, as I’ve seen since Neil passed, we Rush fans are pretty damned amazing at circling the wagons. We’re resilient. We take care of each other, and I would like to think we offer a bit of comfort to Neil’s family, as well as Geddy and Alex, too. I sincerely hope that is the case.
So, it still hurts. Any time I hear a snippet of a Rush song, no matter where I am-with my window rolled down at a traffic intersection, I hear “Limelight” two cars in front of me-it’s hard all over again. But at the same time, I’m touched to see the level of respect being afforded the band, and their genius with the sticks. I’m a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. They played this past Sunday, and got their butts handed to them by the San Francisco 49ers. One game short of the Super Bowl. Again. Four times that I counted (and maybe more, when I went to get a drink, or to the restroom) FOX played Rush leading into their commercial breaks. No words were spoken. But, they didn’t need to say anything. The best tribute that they could have come up with was to simply play their music.
Those of us that know every little riff, every word, every South Park “Lil’ Rush” or Three Stooges concert intro...those of us that could sketch no fewer than 20 hairstyle changes between the guys over the years (it’s “long hair 70s rocker Alex” and “synth period Geddy” with the long hair in a pony tail”.jamming out to start of The Trees. What “do” will Neil be sporting?), those of us that play air guitar AND bass, and drum at a frantic pace, hands flailing about as we try to decide if Neil was actually an alien with two invisible hands-our job now is to educate the next generation. To pass on Rush’s legacy, just as the sacred responsibility of protecting the Grail fell to the Knights of the Crusade. We are charged with ensuring those youngsters that are just now starting to use their noggins get exposed to this wonderful music, and Neil Peart’s lyrical mastery. That, I think, is the greatest way we can honor OUR band, and Neil’s memory. They did the work. They did the hard part. Now it’s our turn to pick up the ball, and run with it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
@@theaterdreamer You have an amazing gift for writing. I sit here with my allergies (I have allergies?) deeply affecting me as I read what you just wrote while Time Stand Still plays on my iPod. For the first week after the announcement (it came the day after my birthday) I was numb to it. Now for the last week it's full on grief with it manifesting itself in obsession as I listen to Rush exclusively (I did the same with Chris Cornell for about six months straight) remembering where I was in my life when their music was released, that they were the first concert I attended in 1984 thanks to winning tickets off the local radio station in the hopes that I would be able to take this girl that I went to school with, scouring TH-cam for interviews and noting the date of the interview for anything of significance, watching their RnR HOF induction, watching Beyond The Lighted Stage and thoroughly enjoying the long take of the three of them having dinner and seeing how much they enjoy being in each other's company after all these years. Just a few things that I've done thus far. There are far bigger Rush fans out there than myself (like you) but I am a fan of theirs nonetheless and like so many others, their music has been, and will continue to be, part of the soundtrack of my life.

Dave Grohl did such a superb introduction for such a phenomenal rock band, such as "Rush!" I like the beginning clip photos of when "Rush" started. I bow down to them. They really deserve it! I've always loved, and still do, appreciate them though out all their years.

Dave and Taylor are practically as much music fanatics as they are artists. That's what I love about most of these Hall of Fame speeches. You have a big artist/band talk about how they were inspired by or worked with the people they are inducting and show their complete knowledge of the artists/bands being inducted.

I would say it's fitting because both Dave And Taylor are drummers. When I was a teenager, and almost every friend I had played an instrument, there was no concensus on who was the best guitarist, singer, bassist or keyboardist. But Every single drummer I knew said Niel was the best rock drummer.

Watching this now is doubly sad. Neil’s gone, and just 23 hours ago, Taylor Hawkins died in Bogota.
One of my best friends said earlier today that Dave and Taylor were the last true rock stars, and I think he was absolutely right. Look at them here. Inseparable, like brothers. Taylor’s enthusiasm for, well, everything in life, was utterly infections.
As my heart aches thinking of the family he left behind, the pain they, Dave and the other members of Foo Fighters feel, as well as their friends and extended family, and their legions of fans ;of which I count myself one), I take solace knowing that Taylor and Neil are absolutely rocking out behind their kits together tonight, playing on the biggest “lighted stage”.
RIP, Professor. And RIP, Taylor. Seeing both you guys in concert are treasured memories I’ll never forget.

ANY rock band who has been around for over 25 years, and are STILL actively recording, touring, and still influencing tons of younger bands (such as Rush), deserve to be inducted. Kiss JUST THIS WEEK finally got inducted. Granted, I prefer Rush over Kiss, but THAT'S ridiculous that it took so long - for BOTH bands!!
I'm still bewildered, confused and disgusted that Abba, The Beastie Boys and Grandmaster Flash (to name just a few) were even inducted, let alone before Rush (or Kiss).

As I've heard mention, it should have been called the Music Hall of Fame, with perhaps different wings for metal, pop, folk, R&B and so on. Might have clarified things a bit, but anytime the process of selection is determined by the vote of a select (and in my opinion biased) group, a lot of people are going to be upset.
Well first thing is the Beastie Boys were and are a very big deal in the music world/industry. Just look at the style of music they had made. Is it rap? Is it rock? No it's the mother and father to bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and many other bands that have mixed the 2 types of music. So for anybody to say they don't deserve to be in the rrholf just doesn't know anything about the Beastie Boys. Not saying you said that because I agree Rush should have been in long before them. Now KISS i don't know so much. Is the rock n roll hof about how much money you made? Lets be honest the biggest attraction to Kiss was the make up for kids like me that were from the 70's. I have to say I still listen to everything I ever liked no matter how much out of date the music may be. Now Kiss is the only band I don't listen to and can look back and say these guys were not good at all. Paul Stanley quite possibly one of the worst singers ever (my opinion) though. The best part of the band had left many years ago. Obviously that is all just my opinion. Only have 2 more words to say Freddie Mercury!!!

Sadly, with Neil's passing, as well as, Eddie Van Halen's recent passing, the year 2020 feels like the end of an era. Their great artistic abilities and talents will live on in their albums and videos, but there is still a definite void.

The world lost a huge influence on rock n roll and along with air drummers like myself. We didn't lose just probably the best drummer of all time, but we lost one of the best bands of all time. Thank you all for 40 years you gave us! First time I heard Rush I knew I wanted to study rock and roll. And that was because of Rush. So, I thank you 3 for everything that you gave us!

I was very sad to hear the news on Neal Peart's passing. He was an incredible drummer and had some awesome riffs. My dad and I were very lucky to have seen Rush perform live in 1989 during the Presto Tour in San Antonio, Texas. The band totally rocked and the special effects, lighting and pyrotechnics were amazing. This is a real sad loss and he will be missed.
First saw Rush in 1978 for the "A Farewell to Kings" tour and most recently last week for R40. Got to say, those frost-bitten Canadian boys know how to put on a show.
Hey, you're too quick to criticize. I've never lived outside of Canada. Geddy Lee once referred to himself, Neil and Alex as "frost bitten Canadian boys", in reference to all the years playing small industrial towns and traveling in a tour bus with poor heating.

I'm not criticizing RRHOF or trying to decide who should get in before or after somebody else; it's just a great tribute to a band that can rival anybody, then and now; on musicianship, WITHOUT all the drama, arrests, blood transfusions, and cancelled shows!! They take time to meet fans and sign autographs (Except the Drummer and he has his reasons) and put on a hell of a show!! Good job on the intro, too! Your right Dave is always there and I appreciate that! A professional like him and Taylor are still fans!

God I love how live, when they start the first verse of Limelight, so not rushed, just let it breath, just riding with it. I can't tell you how many shit gigs I've done where my number one worry is "let's not speed it up"... these guys were so home on stage.
Still think RUSH should not have been inducted, not that they don’t deserve it, but for the simple fact that they transcend and are far above and beyond whatever accolades and awards there are for music, musicians, and gentlemen!!!
