    When installing these locks take one serious issue into mind. Be totally familiar with being able to unlock your door to get out in an emergency. Practice unlocking it with your eyes closed while reaching up from the floor. I have investigated fatal fires where the deceased occupant was found at the door, unable to get out. There are those who say I'd do this or I'd do that but the truth is you never know how you will react until the situation arises. That is why home fire and safety drills are so important.

      Even with door trim, the unit can be mounted without mortising the trim. in most cases The mounting tab is fairly long, and the lock is designed with an angle on the backside to help with this. We've mounted it on a solid core door with aluminum frame and trim and had no issues. I've uploaded a few photos looking down on the lock so you can see the angle that should clear your trim. You can see them here: imgur.com/a/kctTp

    • @PrimeLineHowTo
      @PrimeLineHowTo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We use a freestanding door in a frame to make it easier for us to film.
      Kind of hard to explain, but the fixed bracket that screws to the frame sticks out past the edge of the door frame then sweeps back at 45 deg. so it should be able to clear most casings. The Home Depot website has a 360 deg. viewer for these that lets you see all the way around. You should be able to tell what I'm talking about there. www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Line-Door-Reinforcement-Lock-3-in-Stop-Aluminum-Construction-Satin-Nickel-Anodized-Finish-U-10827/202258432

    I bought a few similar locks, and I guess my doors have a rather large gap... I didn't even mortise out the door frame to recess the locks and they barely engage the door. No, these are only for in-swinging doors.

      This is a display door that we do lots of testing on. If you look from 44s on, you can see that the door already has that scratch on it. th-cam.com/video/VTvm_XKeAZM/w-d-xo.html

    what if the door doesn't touch the lock when installed? I think there may be a gap between my door and the installed lock.

    • @PrimeLineHowTo
      @PrimeLineHowTo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Juan, the gap between the door frame and the door needs to be 7/16" or less.

    • @juanc.castaneda9111
      @juanc.castaneda9111 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry, I meant that after installation, there is a gap in between the front of the door and the rubber pad that holds the door closed. I can't install it any deeper into the gap between the edge of the door and the door frame. I hope I'm making sense. lol..

    • @PrimeLineHowTo
      @PrimeLineHowTo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand. If it's a wood frame door you can slot the door stop enough so that the door lock can slide further back into the frame and sits tighter to the door. It doesn't really have to be tight to work. A little space is fine.

    I was able to drill and install middle screw to hold in place but cant drill other three holes using 1/8 drill bit. Could this portion of door frame be made of metal. If so what do I do then?

    • @kjireland3567
      @kjireland3567 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try a drill bit for concrete or metal that may be behind the wood

  • @erikguerrero5155
    @erikguerrero5155 ปีที่แล้ว

    I installed the first screw but when I try to open the door it rubs heavily on the metal plate, is this how it’s supposed to be?

    • @PrimeLineHowTo
      @PrimeLineHowTo  ปีที่แล้ว

      There needs to be enough room between the door frame and the door for this part to work. You can trace the part, then remove it and use a chisel to mortise out a little bit of the door frame at a time until it doesn't rub anymore.

    folks you are forgetting something. This latch is not for security when you are away, it is for security when you or someone else is home. Also when an emergency requires entry to your home a window will be broken out. Additionally no lock will prevent your door from being kicked down. If that happens a mm with a full magazine is the preferred latch. it works quite well. I have installed many night latches, and this is the best one I have tried. the idea of the screws going in laterally instead of on the surface of the door frame gives the latch much more strength. The unlock/lock process is easily done by pulling the latch away from the latch plate.

      At least, all doors except one in your home would be protected well. Then, you will need a deadbolt for that one door that you cannot use this on.

    Haven't seen it in any of the top comments, but if you get one of these locks and it comes with a 2 inch screw, swap it for a 3 inch for added security!

    • @PrimeLineHowTo

    Got this today, regretted it. Its very hard to open AND close. The spring is too tight. im afraid people inside wont be able to get out in an emergency. It would be helpful if there was a knob to hold and pull. I dont know if DW40 would help to make it more free flowing.
