Are Portable Door Locks the Best Security for $5? Honest Review

- I wish I would have gotten these years ago. But when I saw a deal of 2 for $10, I had to give them a try. The results were surprising. Fits in a purse or pocket, these blockers can provide you added protection at school, work, home, and on travel. This is an honest review. I paid for these portable door locks with my own money.

I have seen these locks everywhere, but no one ever demoed how to put the things _on_ the door. I appreciate this. Thank you.
you're welcome.
When we travel my wife, and I both seniors. We hang a cross from the top of the hotel room door so it rests right above the room number. You will be surprised what a deterrent that is. A tenant from another room saw me in the morning, and said to me "we were freaking out, we thought there was someone dead in there"😊 I purchased thru a catalog years ago a battery operated alarm which hangs on the inside knob of the room, if anyone touches the outside knob a deafening sound occurs. But I will buy these as added protection.
Grady, interesting idea. Thanks for sharing.
Also, keeps vampires out that way
Yep, i've got a under door wedge, that as soon as anyone pushes the door lets out 120 db piercing alarm-$10.
@@EmeraldHill-vo1cs I saw those but if you have a pet, or travel with one, they could set it off so I passed on the door wedge option.
@@drunkvegangal8089 Yes theyre real screachers.
Traveling solo now and despite the “do not disturb” sign, some dude from housekeeping just tried to open my door. 🧐
Thanks for the clear and precise tutorial. 💞💞
This is not just for safety but also for privacy 💛
You’re welcome 😊Safer travels.
Either the dude doesn’t speak or read English. Or he’s just a creeper
I’ve had that happen too.
You could also carry chalk, a shaped rubber piece that wedges in at the base or the door and if it is rubber then you can put it on the opening side of the door where the lock is.
Also a worn out flip flop will cause unwanted guests by doing a wedge under the door but you always need to do it near the frame base where it opens at the widest poing.
Since hotels started hiring 3 rd party illegals to clean this kind of issues started happening. Same thing when they started sending our accounts overseas I’m always getting strange overseas calls and text
These were all tested from the inside. I would have liked to see these locks put in and then the door handles tested from the outside like someone was trying to get in.
maybe someday I'll find a door I don't mind destroying and will give it a shot. Here's an even tougher lock if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/rBJk7GoTnZE/w-d-xo.html

Unless your a disgruntled ex-boyfriend or husband, criminals don't like making noise.Great for bnb or hotels. Would definitely get one. Better than nothing.

great suggestion, thanks for sharing.
Make sure the screws in the plates of your door jamb are long enough to HOLD the pressure of the lock. I have these because the building maintenance person they called in for he apt BELOW me, came into MY apt! They opened the door, I was asleep and FREAKED out! I emailed corporate...to prevent a "next time" (where I would shoot instead) I got one of these. For their safety. These work great at hotels.
Wow, thanks for sharing your experiences with all. Maybe you should post a warning on the outside of the door...
I just ordered one it came in the mail today I tried it out because one of my doors doesn't really locked and it really works I highly recommend one thanks for your reviews.

It will be a good deterrent in hotels where intruders wouldn’t be brash enough to kick down the door. But for home security, this gadget will break with huge impact. Security door jammers on floor offers way higher protection
I’ve had one of these for many years and you wouldn’t believe how solid the door frame becomes when this gizmo is inserted using the dead bolt. I really doubt if anyone could kick it in.
good to know!!

Saw a video on Vegas crime and apparently they are breaking into occupied hotel rooms during the night to steal. Strongly recommend that tourists consider this because those fancy hotels do not even have cameras in the hallways. You have no security. They are hitting the occupied rooms closest to elevators/stairwells.
Wow Diana, thanks for sharing. Vegas seems to have changed a lot since covid.
And the safes in the room all have the same master code number.
They actually did a sting operation last June and caught a guy robbing a 'bait room'. The court date recently passed and this guy plead not guilty. Like seriously? Caught in the act on camera and still pleads not guilty. He did have the same M.O. as all the burglaries of this nature so they are hoping they caught the guy that was doing all of them.
Impressive! Dorms, hotels, home security. I’m ordering some for my family. Thanks!
Mary E, these are great, I was watching a movie the other day where the bad guys picked the lock and got in. This device would have kept them on the outside.
For a dorm, usually you have the key. So you can just put the key in the lock inside?
🙏 Thank You So Much for the demonstration on these portable door blockers for stopping intruders from coming into our hotel rooms! 🙏
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comments. Safe travels.
I had a side door on my house, which was a 100 year old house. The side door was old, the lock rusted, and the door wouldn't stay shut. Couldn't afford a new door, but got one of these (another brand) and worked like a charm. Just closed that door up nice and tight and safe.
Interesting application. Thanks for sharing.
not a bad idea for some random weathered/old door you just want closed and will never use. Slightly cheaper and definitely less work than buying a new handle set and installing it
@@EB-bl6cc worked great, would have had to replace the entire door due to age, but, this kept it closed up tight, and I didn't need to use the side door anyway.

This thing is trash.....Just saw another video where this man kicked the door down in 1 kick
@@ItsMe-zv4wg It depends more on the door than this slide lock. Many doors can get kicked in given time and motivation...

It's a self defense tool.
ME TOO!
Single life😅
I purchased this lock and it works.
It works so well, that I got locked in the bedroom. FIRST Be sure when you turn the knob that the knob goes in ALL THE WAY flush with the door. If not, you will be locked in as I was in a two story house. Someone had to take a ladder, climb onto the roof and then through a window to have access.
He then had tools to take off the door from the hinges to free me. When we turned the knob we saw the issue. The know did not turn flush with the wood of the door.
I will definitely use the lock - its really sturdy! But be aware of the ability to turn the knob all the way in before you utilize. Or you too...will be locked in the room.
Also, we could not open the door even though there was just a sliver of the little latch that did not go flush with the door. So, don't worry about in not working from the other side. I'm proof - it works!
It is much nicer to see practical uses. This feels more like a QVC ad. Mom was curious about these and your video made them look flawless... But I looked more and found a video showing a grown man push a door open with one of these installed.
You do need to put them in place correctly, a poorly installed safety measure rarely works well for long... Here's another, stronger option: th-cam.com/video/rBJk7GoTnZE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks. I was thinking about getting this. Glad I saw your review 👌

Thanks. I'm glad you found this helpful.
This kind of lock has been around forever. There is a one piece slide lock that works great. I found that if a good amount of pressure is put on the door. the bar on the inside of the door will tend to bend away from the door handle. Wrapping a belt around the door knob and the bar will prevent the bar from bending.
Interesting suggestion, thanks for sharing.
My landlord, when he couldn't reach out to me for some dumb crap, sent his handiwork guy INSIDE my apartment, I was naked in the living room going to take a shower. I became livid. I'm going to buy this for sure.
This will definately slow him down.
I was not naked but the manager of our apartment building did something similar. I heard someone wiggling the doorknob and then the door opening so I popped out of nowhere with a knife. They never came by again without sending an official notice the day before. 😂
This could have slowed them down at least enough to take a peek through the peephole and see who it was.
Now I also have a German Shepherd so that helps with unwanted entries too.
Thank you for this demonstration!
You are so welcome! You might also like these locks, that I just posted yesterday, much stronger... th-cam.com/video/rBJk7GoTnZE/w-d-xo.html
The pair is currently $14.99 on 11.15.23 but that is still a great deal. Prices usually go up on great products with review videos because of the uptick in demand. $15 isn't much more than $10 a year ago considering TMV :) Great video, will be buying a few sets. You can use a fork as well, just bend the tips or fingers, put it in the hole of the lock or deadbolt, close the door and bend the fork into the door panel towards the handle
you, tried that and it works.
I like this but opted for a simple large eye screw. Push it into the crack of the top of the door is what I did, and screw it down a turn or two creating a wedge that makes everything work together if someone kicks the door in, it holds well, as I tested it. Combined with a 2x4 cut and wrapped in non slip grip wedged under the door handle and I can't even be rescued if I needed it without massive work. I used things I already had, but this for the price looks great if you travel.
The eye screw is a great idea, does it damage the door, I've been working on a similar 2X4 approach. Stay tuned. Will likely post after I refine a bit more.
I like how you started out trying to show how thick and strong/durable the metal is, then once it started bending, you stopped applying relatively little pressure.
Thanks, the bending really isn't that big of a deal if you don't do it too much.
Awesome review this helps alot.

How most stores this will work well with the deadbolt but on a home the thickness of the door casing and the screw length into the structural frame will determine its effectiveness. Very commonly the door casing is the 3/4-in board which is not very strong if the strike plate is attached to that board with 3/4-in screws and somebody were to ram the door the door casing would probably split.
But if you run screws that are 3 in long through the door casing into the structural lumber (the 2x4 or 2x6), then those screws will hold the strike plate in place which will hold your brace in place against the door in place and the door will be very difficult to get open even if you've got just a spring bolt.
Totally agree, I've replaced all the screws in the doors I work with or have for the reasons you've highlighted above. Excellent points all around.
My mama is a tiny lady who’s insecure and overly protective, so I am getting this lock for sure. Once I locked my room door while she was screaming outside, I told her to go away, so she kicked my door open. With a loved one like this one, get this lock!

Hi there your first demonstration you have a glass windows. As far as the other applications cool

It actually works I just got mine today, I bought some for my sister too when her husband has to work she's at home by herself and gets scared sometimes, I live by myself also I've had people try breaking in before when I lived in another apartment, I feel secure now if someone breaks down the door it least these locks will give you a head start !! Thanks for making This Video, Im ordering off Amazon
You're welcome. Let me know what you think of them.
I have locks similar to these and I can't put them in the door, they're too thick. Your doors look pretty tight, how did you wedge the locks between them; or are they a fairly thin metal?
As long as the persons trying to break in are willing to break the door to get in, I guess it doesn't make much of a difference. On the other hand, it adds a hinder to those who want to sneak in undetected without breaking anything.
agreed!
Exelent video. Thanks

There’s a TH-cam video where they tested these two hole door locks against the single hole Addalock. The metal plates on these two hole locks bent and we’re not as secure as the single hole Addalock. I bought Addalock.

What about the opposite side of the door will these work on the other side if the doors if your door opens in the opposite direction? Like how your doors opens by pulling towards you but what about those that you push away from your direction?

This is impressive. Can this portable lock be padlocked, so that only a person with a key can remove it?
I am asking because I would need to lock an internal door in the shared space of a building, and a portable solution would be much simpler than having to install a deadbolt or equivalent.

My 80-year-old father who has dementia lives with me, and I've had a problem with him trying to get out the door in the middle of the night. I have five locks on my door currently and he has pretty much figured out how to get out of all of them except for one but, he's been inspecting that one a lot and I pretty sure he's going to figure it out. With this work installed on the outside of the front door to prevent him from getting out? I wasn't sure what you could see on the other side of the door? I know it would be visible from the outside but I'm not really worried about someone getting in as much as I am him getting out right now.
This lock only works on the inside. You might try this one: th-cam.com/video/rBJk7GoTnZE/w-d-xo.html if you placed it higher on the door and made sure it was installed tight, which is the correct way, in order words you need to press on the door to release the lock it may work for you.
