If Portable Ops really is that small, there’s no reason it couldn’t be a “Chapter 1” to Peace Walker’s “Chapter 2” and put them in the same game.

I think a Halo MCC style of game would fit; a launcher that takes you to a menu, a list of games that can be updated over time with each remake getting added. It won’t matter how short some of the remakes are if the entire saga can be played within a single launcher. It would feel like a base game with larger titles getting supported with large expansions, not multiple small titles hodgepodged together.

What's going on with Portable Ops? In the last 12 months there's been major retrospectives from Christian Cryers, thevoicebox, Chole, Gaming Pastime, Keiv Reviews Things, and now Max Derrat!!!
It's awesome to see the game getting such coverage; such an unfairly forgotten gem. Yeah, the controls on the PSP made it borderline unplayable, but playing it on an emulator now, it plays pretty much identical to MGS3: Subsistence, and it looks damn good too.

I would say the Acid games are even less well remembered than Portable Ops. I don't need remakes of them, but I would like to see Konami port them to Steam. Also, regarding the PO plot, the "Ghost" twist was originally quite silly, but in the context of MGSV, where XOF was cleaning up after Snake during MGS3, it's more plausible that Skull Face captured him before the destruction of Grozny Grad.

  • @Alfrays
    @Alfrays 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

I would love to play a remake of PO.
The story could be tweaked a little, and expanded upon.
I would add a hub in the middle of San Hieronimo, so that Snake and the other soldiers could actually feeroam the peninsula while completing main and side quests.
I would add a creepy boss fight with Ursula in which the player should be forced to physically attack her to demage her, while she floats around, in a vertical arena, throwing stuff.
I would put a countdown that forces the player to finish the story before the end of 1970, otherwise there is a cinematic game over(and after the game over, there would be a new game + with all the previous upgrades to speed up the new run). And then i would add a chapter covering the firsts official foxhound missions, where Snake saves Eva in Hanoi, and then splits from Cypher, escaping in south America. Playing as Foxhoud would allow to add an endless coop missions system similar to PO+.

I assumed Big Boss used the money to help fund the Patriots.
My idea for an MPO remake was always to have a large open map that expands each existing map into a large sections of the peninsula. You'd eventually move to capturing bases to accommodate more troops, with a risk of enemy inspections afterwards exposing them and forcing you to head over and help defend the base from the enemy assault. And support troops actually appear on the map. Maybe you're about to infiltrate the hospital, so you head to a nearby ridge where your support unit is stationed to retrieve some supplies. And once you're down there, if they have a sniper among them, they can provide cover like Quiet in MGSV.

2:20 Portable Ops is not canon, it was, keyword *was*. They still showed the Saga canon/timeline (Kojimas own timeline) on Konami's Metal Gear - Hotline which was TWO days ago as of this comments posting. Okamura, the star of the video was heavily involved in Portable Ops and yet it was not added there.
I'm not saying Konami won't ever make Metal Gear Solid 7: Metal Gear and eventually add to or throw out Kojimas own timeline, but what I am saying is factually Portable Ops has not been canon for longer than it's ever been canon at this rate.
Who knows, maybe one day they'll remake/reimagine it and it will be but it's not yet.

      1)
Big Boss took a job working for the Colombian Government where he met and recruited Kaz who was working for the Rebels. Prior to meeting him he drifted aimlessly. This is literally in the game.
      2)
Snake and Miller built their scrappy organization with their own two hands. Miller made it more organized and they got rich/wealthy over the events of PW. They didn't start with a small loan of a billion dollars. That said, at the end of MGS3 Snake still has the real legacy which was hidden in his back pocket which he reveals while listening to Eva's tape (she got a fake of it and Ocelot mentions this after the credits) and this is not mentioned in Portable Ops ever. Off screen MGS4 implies Zero was given this and when Big Boss disagreed with him he wen't his own way.
      3)
"Finally we can leave that crap in San Hieronymo behind us and break into the mercenary buisness for real." is literally a fourth wall break to disregard that game. It doesn't matter outside of the meta humor but even then it simply implies Snake and Kaz had been elsewhere in the past which is impossible given the timeline like with Cambell, who outside POPS makes no mentions of ever being side by side with Big Boss.
      4)
FOXHOUND's formation is reffered to in text in MGS3's credits as being in 1971, FOX's formation is offscreen before 3, and even POPS doesn't technically show it either. The original ending cut from POPS did have him found it though, yet the final game shows him with a FOXHOUND patch on his beret a year before it existed. Then again this is the same game that's final ending has an image of Snake with two eyes unless thats meant to be David.
Extra point: days ago in a live video demomstration advertising the Snake Eater remake the timeline showed every Kojima MGS title and not Portable Ops or Revengence even though said presenter worked on Portable Ops. It saddens me when people don't know the story or do any research.

I could rant about it for long, but I try keep it short. It takes away the impact of Solid Snake's struggle with Genes, that he overcomes during the Shadow Moses. For example: The graphics of MGS Delta are 99% based on the ones already available in the MGS3 Pachinko arcade machine. And the gameplay from MGS Delta borrows almost everything from MGSV Ground Zeroes/The Phantom Pain.
As lazy and greedy as Konami is, don't expect too much novelty. The only games that potentially will be remade after this one are either MGS1 Twin Snakes (because the gameplay here is more advanced than the PS1 version and was already remade by a team not involving Kojima) or MGS2 Substance. Forget about MGS4 who's graphics are too close to those on next gen consoles.
And definitely forget about any other 2D Metal Gear game being remade. Konami is looking for a fast cash grab. They are a company thinking on short term investment and gain, they are not an auteur like Kojima who has a vision on the long term.

The events there are so pivotal to everything that's been happening in the series. I mean that's the games where Solid Snake actually fought Big Boss. IMO there is no higher rank match up in the entire series yet we are stuck with that dated encounter. There's a guy here on TH-cam who's remaking the first game as an anime and he really manages quite well to a tense athmosphere worthy of the events. If you watch that and then watch what it actually refers to in the game, you cannot help but wish you got a remake from the ground up.

As much as I love mgs3, unless it adds new parts it isn’t enough content to be released as a new game in today’s standards. Mgs 5 took an average of 50 + hours to beat for most people and the original mgs3 can easily be completed under 3 hours.

The one thing Konami needs to realize is that PlayStation is a sinking ship right now.
They have openly revealed their hand into ruining gaming in 2018, probably started a while before that,
    and have yet to course-correct.
Konami really need to stop making their games for PlayStation first and then produce some crappy ports on other platforms.
They should instead make the game optimized for literally any other system, preferably PC first, and THEN make a crappy half-a$$ed and censored PlayStation port of it. Sony doesn't deserves any better than this at this point.

@@Slavic_Snake While I agree console exclusivity isn't always the best move, I disagree it is automatically a sinking ship.
If you look at PlayStation exclusivity, then yeah it's bad. They will censor the hell out of your product and make you pretend you enjoyed it.
An Xbox or Nintendo exclusive wouldn't be anywhere near as bad. At least at this point in time, both of these companies show signs of getting worse recently.
A PC exclusive would be better. Any publisher you strike a deal with doesn't control the gates of the whole PC ecosystem. Depending of your contract, a publisher damaging your product could be abandoned and the game released without them, at least in theory. Can't go around a console manufacturer in this way.
But I disagree that releasing a game on EVERY platform is automatically better. In 99% of the modern days examples we could look at, the multi-platform game had only one version, censored enough to meet PlayStation standards, released as-is on every platform. PlayStation censorship ruined the game for everyone on every console.
I mean yeah, the developer is at fault for bowing down to them, and not giving them an inferior version that met their standards of low quality. But PlayStation is still the main cause.
So in other words, PlayStation exclusives and games available on all platform all with the exact same content are tied for last place.
Xbox and Nintendo exclusives rank higher, and may occasionally reach as high as PC exclusives and games properly adapted for each system.
PlayStation IS the weakest link here.

22:20 Max, I really respect you and your previous work, and how you deep dive into the stories of various media, especially Kojima games (where lines of dialogue can have double meanings in both a narrative and meta sense). That’s why I think it’s kinda bizarre that you take the “leave all that crap behind” line at complete face value. Like, Kojima wrote that line at the very start of a game that would go on to completely disregard the events of “all that crap in San Heironymo.” (as Ravi Singh showed in his editorial on the subject, “Leaving All That Crap in San Heironymo Behind”)
While it’s true that, circa MGS4, Kojima initially intended MPO to be canon (hence why it’s listed among other canon games in that exposition cutscene with Naomi you showed), it’s become pretty obvious since PW that he’s been trying to “leave all that crap in San Heironymo behind.” And since MGS4 only references MPO in a few cutscene stills, that made it an easy game to disregard. It’s not that much different from how the weapon description for the Five-SeveN references the non-canon Ghost Babel.
When asked if MPO is still canon, Kojima initially said that the main story is canon, but some of the details aren’t. However, he immediately backtracked, and said, rather than saying if it’s canon or not, he instead emphasized that, inside him, he divides “A Hideo Kojima Games” from games he only produced.
Having said all of that, the Master Book included in the Master Collection (released after Konami kicked Kojima out of his own creation) does include the events of MPO in the timeline, and explicitly says that the game’s events connects to the series canon. So MPO fans can find solace in the fact that Metal Gear’s corporate IP overlords have decreed that they regard the game as canon. I just wish more people tried to understand Kojima’s actual POV.

Since Snake Eater is getting a more direct remake in Delta, maybe they can take a more liberal approach to remaking Portable Ops (and even Peace Walker). Hell, they could even combine the two and have Portable Ops' scenario be the prologue to the larger segment that is covered in Peace Walker. Kind of like the Tanker/Plant scenarios in MGS2, Virtuous Mission/Operation Snake Eater in MGS3, and Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain in MGSV.
I also heard that the current producer of the Delta remake worked on Portable Ops so it would be great if he could push for it to be remade. The possibilities for future remakes are endless, and I hope they can take some liberties in bringing the "smaller screen" games like Portable Ops and Peace Walker to a new light. And of course, they NEED to remake Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as those have the most important events between Solid Snake and Big Boss. I would fully support a campaign to get the games remade chronologically if that is Konami's plan.

After MGS3, the lack of an open interconnected world threw me off, made me feel less like a soldier sneaking around in the forest and more like some random guy who has to follow direct orders and read comic books with QTE sequences. Not to mention just how boring Peacewalker's dialog is and the lack of a codec system, it's like a string of mini challenges and not a full game. Lore wise, they might aswell be VR missions, and I don't like that, I don't like the fast paced arcadey feel, I like objectives that take a long time to complete.

You didnt mention the online Mode and MGSPOps+ was focusing a lot on multiplayer. I found it superb for a handheld game. It might have even give me more joy than PW.

Calling to the Night is one of my favourite songs from the franchise
I hope they remake Portable Ops combined with Peace Walker, kind of what Ground Zeroes is to TPP

I never got the chance to play Portable Ops. I usually ignore it’s place it in the canon, but maybe I need to rip it in an emulator. I think fans would be confused by a retitled remake in this instance. Maybe make it Delta DLC?

I’ve very much considered PO to be canon - I know Kojima’s comments made it confusing but PW references some events that happened in PO. I just think he forgot about PO when he made that comment

Never played portable ops, love Snake Eater but it's really rubbing me wrong how they made the boss look like a guy.
She was always to some extent androgynous but she retained a lot of femininity that was vital to her character and seems to be missing on this iteration.

Let's be honest konami is doing the new remake because they are recycle the voices, the music, chatacters, plot. Etc. They will never spend money on a remake they have to do from zero. Not gonna happen. Sorry

As a longtime fan, I will play MGS 3 remake but I'm sad it's gonna be without KOJIMA at the helm, peace walker is the most slept on imo!!!....

They can release MGPO in the Vol. 2 and update the game play with Fulton Recovery and new controllers. They should remake MG & MG2 Solid Snake.

Portable Ops MUST be the next remake. Email them if you have to.

Why not remake these games using the open world? It'll be an absolute banger! You can leave everything else, the story, cutscenes and dialogue as is!

Imagine they remake the original Metal Gear 1 and 2 but with the modern games' engine
(Not Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear)

I am glad I got this game on my PS Vita. Being able to use a second stick is awesome. A really under appreciated title.

A top down remake of Portable Ops would be pretty cool, although I'd ideally like to have it merged with a Peace Walker remake.

Lol no, it is not a great game. I subbed because of your MGS2 video but damn dude most of your other content is just disappointingly bad

2:45 Psh, no Snake's Revenge? I know it's not really a Metal Gear game, but that's just like Super Mario 2 isn't a real Mario game. I managed to get myself a copy of that and Twin Snakes between 15 & 10 years ago respectively, but I keep passing on VR Missions for some reason. And of course I have Portable Ops & Peacewalker and everything on PS1/2/Xbox, but nothing MGS4 and up. I should probably get on that. Oh and Resurgence is badass too.

The real Metal Gear game that everyone forgot was Metal Gear Acid.

Beat this game several times. Wish they carried over the spy unit to peacewalker and phantom pain as well. Just a new modern console release would be great.
