Just an FYI - please keep in mind that St. Martin's Press is publishing their first Muslim author with the book "Hope Ablaze" by Sarah Mughal Rana so PLEASE support the book! It targets Islamophobia and politics so plelase keep this in mind!

I have two things to say on this:
    1. Marginalised authors are marginalised people first, then authors. We don't know what obstacles and barriers exist in their 'real' lives, so we should careful when we ask them to take a visible stance on topics or global events, particularly when their governments take a markedly difference stance. They may be a precarious that prevents them from visibly advocating but we shouldn't assume they aren't donating or taking part in other activism. Let's not demand marginalised authors to put themselves at substantial risks by villainising them for not being vocal.
    2. Which brings me my second point: the silence of those who don't face these real, substantial threats to their lives or livelihoods is deafening. There are literal governments saying brown people should be deported for their stances. If you have the opportunity to raise your voice without facing that threat, then we see you, we hear your silence. Anyone undertaking advocacy is already putting themselves at risk of doxxing, hate, threats etc. But for marginalised people the threats are multiplied. Acknowledge this, please. Being born with privilege is does not make you evil or bad. However, if you are choosing to not use that privilege for good, then do take a long look at yourself and ask why.

It disgusts me how many large publishing companies and large authors and reader profiles aren’t saying anything!! I’m so sad my favorite authors haven’t really said anything about this and they could do so many things to help Gaza, Armenia, Congo, Sudan everything. Raise awareness, donate, call your state representatives, demand cease fires, and nobody is doing anything except a handful of celebrities, influencers and hundreds and thousands of normal everyday people. I’m so so saddened by all of this

    • @kristyns1640

i kinda am feeling like i will not be buying a book new from any author that has been silent (and ofc, the ones who have chosen to defend violence and colonialism not at all) because it genuinely just bothers me. if I had a large following of fans, I'd be just as vocal if not more so because I actually have resources... I feel sad to scroll accounts where it doesn't seem like this is happening in their bubble. It's not their job but this is about humanity. I think we all have an obligation to educate ourselves properly.

      Controversial opinion***
honestly, I don't think talking about it would help. Donate, leave a link to donate, or help in any other way. I always wonder how a few words and an emoji of a flag on twitter will actually help people over there. I came from a third world country with regular bombings, kidnappings of little girls, and persecution of people in a certain faith. I was talking to one of my Armenian friends about this the other day and... I promise you we don't care about that. Just saying. Sometimes I wonder if the privileged west pretends to care to comfort their own egos and tell their fellow westerners that they actually care too. Like, to give themselves a pat on the back. But, I don't want to be that pessimistic. DOING something is much more helpful than curating a video essay on instagram that many of us...didn't even have access too. Actions speak louder than words. Much louder. Again, I never understood how "speaking out about it" helped. Most people on this planet that are on the internet already know what's happening and their favourite author celebrity isn't going to convince them to care or take action, if they didn't already want to on their own. I mean, are people going to change their views on a topic because someone else said so? Are people that easily influenced? Really? Money talks...donate. Emojis don't do anything and fake crying on social media doesn't do anything. This isn't directed at you of course, I just wanted to give my opinion on how I feel social media and social issues can become tricky, and that I feel that a lot of it is a facade if no help is actually being given to the people suffering. Sorry for my english.

It's so heartening to see you actively denouncing genocide against the Palestinian people, unlike many BookTubers who have chosen to stay silent despite speaking out in the past about the type of injustices that have been deemed acceptable enough to publicly oppose. Your righteous anger expressed here was such a balm amidst all the ugliness out here. I won't forget you and the small but mighty number of TH-camrs who bravely took a stance. Thank you for your unwavering support💓

I do have a request, as a hearing-impaired viewer. I don't know what you're using when you do the voiceover while reading a post, but for instance, your audio for 13:05-16:54 was impossible for me to hear. I normally have my volume nearly all the way up along with using captions, but I wasn't able to watch those 3 minutes-ish because the volume was so low and the captions didn't match up. I have a question. What should ARC readers on Netgalley do? I have 2 weeks left to post my review for an ARC I got way before the boycott. Is it okay to review solely on Netgalley so my score doesn’t go down or should I avoid reviewing at all? It’s a Wednesday Books ARC so I think it falls under the boycott. Sorry if it’s a dumb question. I am hoping they will address this bs and improve themselves/take appropriate measures.

Their social media is hateful and disappointing, but I don't know what people expect the company to do at this exact moment. If they fire them based solely on social media pressure, they are opening themselves up to a lawsuit. Realistically, it seems like the only thing to really do is share information and show who you support and don't support with your dollars. Also, love the All Seasons rant.

The majority of publishing companies will put in the contract with employees a clause that says (and I am paraphrasing) you can't publicaly make the company look bad. This is why we have seen other employees and even authors dropped for similar things. If such a clause is in their contract (and I would bet it is) , a lawsuit would go absolutely no where. They violated their contract and were terminated as a result. The company is an imprint of Macmillan. They have access to the best lawyers and they know it.

It’s illegal to retaliate against an employee because of their political party AND off-duty political participation in New York.
It’s pretty clear that they’re calling for their firing because of their “off-duty political participation” or posts online. It’s retaliation plain as day.
It’s one thing to retaliate against someone. Another thing to demand their job retaliate against them on your behalf.
If St. Martins fires her solely because of her politics online, they will open themselves to prosecution. They have to have more than that.
