I hate when men say "I respect women, I have a wife/daughter/sister, etc." Because the implication is that the ONLY reason they can even fathom having respect for women is if they are related to one they personally care about. Not like we deserve respect because we're also human beings.

Sometimes people just dont like a book because its not for them and the choices you made didnt vibe with them. Which makes me wonder like, how useful are reading reviews for authors? Because reviews arent always constructive, and then oftentimes ill see a book get 1 star for doing something a certain way, and then another person will give it 5 stars because they loved that one element the 1 star reviewer hated. As a non author i think working with editors and beta readers is the best way to grow your skills. Cuz like, ideally the best authors are out here finding their own voice and honing how they put it to page, rather than just trying to cater to anyone and everyone who didnt like your book. I say this as someone who has sent my first drafts to beta readers and competitions and I am horrified now that I look back at those drafts. A manuscript becomes a book once its gone through a couple of rounds of edits. Stop putting your braindumps up as finished product for people to purchase. People rate things 1 star for a number of reasons. One of them is the book not being what they paid for.

They admitted yesterday they only turned in the copy of the book at the beginning of the year (it's still January) and started hate tweeting 2 weeks later about not getting it back.. and that's after the drama they caused in making demands of their editor. It's kind of odd to turn in your book late and then expect them to turn it back to you in a few days.

I don’t work in publishing and have never even stepped foot in a publishing office. But I do work in the corporate world, and I feel like everyone is super overwhelmed with extra work right now. I don’t know the specifics on why they think their editor is Zionist or if the editor said something or did something inappropriate. But I have to say, it sounds (at least the way they worded it) that they took a break for several MONTHS and didn’t work? I’m not sure exactly what was meant by that. But while I respect everyone’s right to take a break and rest when things are rough, if I was off on a deadline by several months at my job….i would have been fired and the person who would have to take over for my work that was behind would be overwhelmed. Even if for some reason I wasn’t fired and I had to pick up on my own work I would be extremely behind. That’s to say that their editor likely has a ton of projects (likely more than they can handle) and may not even work there anymore if there are complaints of them being a Zionist and therefore their requests may be falling to someone else who has to pick up the plate from scratch. I don’t necessarily agree with either but I think putting off a deadline for several months for any reason and then complaining about your employer online isn’t great. 24:10

@@IamAlmostRealWitch that’s not necessarily true. Deadlines change all the time, either because the author requests more time or because the publisher has changed the pub date. I worked more in non-fiction and crime publishing but sometimes manuscripts were finished the week before they were due to go to print! The publisher may feel that her book is better to publish in spring 2025 for example but not communicated that to her yet /it’s not been finalised so they’re leaving it for now.
I mean Patrick Roffuss still hasn’t been dropped! 😂 if anyone would be kicked for missed deadlines it would be him! He’s super famous of course. But Even for a mid list author being dropped for multiple missed deadlines would be highly unusual. I mean it’s only a year late at most, I’ve seen less famous authors deliver far later.

They deliberately missed three deadlines and the last one was under the excuse "my activism has taken a toll on me so I can't write right now". They're not an established author, they are a newly published and has one book on the market currently. Not only that, Xiran has complained about their publisher for years publicly for various reasons. One of the deadlines they deliberately withheld because they demanded more money for Iron Widow. Then they bashed the editor on social media for being a "zionist" and then cried when the editor did not want to work with them anymore because of it. This is not just about missing deadlines, but a myriad of bad behaviour and entitlement from their side. I'm finally at a point where I can convince my epic-level imposter syndrome that I am capable of writing novels worth publishing. When I finally DO publish the book I'm working on, I will happily take any 1 and 2 star reviews right along with the 3+ stars. Just the fact that someone feels enough of something (anything) to take the time and effort to write a review is a win to me. Nobody is entitled to only positive reviews (or ANY reviews), and if reviewers only gave 3+ stars that would do nothing but make 3 star reviews the new 1 star. What a ridiculous line of thinking. This is why authors need to stay out of reader/reviewer spaces.

I put my work out there for people, and if the people speak. They speak. I would never want someone to take pity on me as a writer and rate my work a 3. No if it's a 1 to you give me a 1. Please lol.

I am a published writer, and it's very clear that woman is not. It's so embarrassing seeing someone run into a new field like they're the first one to do something difficult (four months? are you kidding me, bish?), slapping on the self-pity like a seven layer cake. Writing IS very hard. Lots of things are hard. Do you know how long it takes to become a surgeon? But I'm not gonna be like, "Hey, they worked really hard to get to that point" if my surgeon does a terrible job.
And yes, obviously a bad book experience isn't comparable to life-altering surgery, but the metaphor stands for most things. Sending awful food back at a restaurant, disliking the way a clothing item looks on your body. Personal preference is not some sort of universal standard, and that woman's tiktok was so incredibly revealing in such a short period of time. I get the sense that she is not ready to be a professional writer. She seems self-concerned in a way that makes me think her book is probably atrocious, and coming out to manipulate people into giving you pity votes doesn't suggest this is going to be a solid novel. If you can't handle people being mean about the things you put out in the world, you're gonna have a tough time. Even if they're objectively wrong, people are allowed to interpret things as they will and hold the opinions that they do. You're already prepared to be upset, girl. Maybe this is just not the career path for you, as there isn't a successful writer in the world who's never received harsh or unfair criticism. Saying, "But I worked really haaaaard" makes you sound like a hack.
EDIT: Sorry, I was so irked as a fellow writer that I spewed out a reply before I kept watching. You used the same example, lol. But yeah, it's such a flimsy argument she's trying to make.

    I'm 😮
I read a book by JD Barker in 2022. It was mid, 3 stars. It was about an "erotic" serial killer that had been groomed as a kid. With POV chapters from the killer. And......... this explains so much.

Yeah, he could have gone to models or other creators to create the content he wanted, but that costs money!
    Glad he's suffering consequences.

I def won’t be rating books 3 ⭐️ or more because of your own insecurities… if you choose to write and publish, you need to accept that not every one will enjoy it and that’s just part of life! If you cant handle criticism then don’t go into arts in general you’ll be unhappy in that field!!… seriously these people…
