Same here. I’ve had depression since I was 13, early 2000’s when people would say the wildest things and yet I have never said a single racist remark. I can’t believe I survived this long without my depression taking the reins over me 😮💨a relief

I’m still so amazed at how overwhelming STUPID what she did is. Books are such a unique market that there really is room for everyone. No one is like “I only read one debut a year so prove to me why you are the best”. Readers read A LOT.
As well as, not every reader is a writer, but EVERY writer is a reader. The creators are also major consumers.
And she was given MANY chances to step back and resolve this in private. Like?????

I just finished reading a book about e-publishing and the author was like, "You are not in competition with other authors, you are coworkers." People read tons of books a year, there was no reason for her behavior.

I work in a library. "Indefinitely" checking out a books means checking out a book without the intention to return it, which we also call stealing. They can not only be fined by the library for that, but charged for stealing.
I also want to add that checking out books with no intent to return them, stealing library books, and hiding library books happens way more often than people think, and the current book banning climate in this country is only making it worse.
i hope they get in trouble for publically admitting to stealing and also banned from the library!
I hope someone donates those very books back to the library. Not everyone can afford to buy those books. That’s what the library is for!

So here’s the thing, I have a coworker that trauma dumps every time she is being held accountable for her actions. Like she legit just told me a whole long story about why she couldn’t do the bare minimum in cleaning up her workspace because of trauma. 👩🏼 will say the don’t absolve themselves while actually absolving themselves of all responsibilities.
Can’t stand those people. Trauma does not excuse you of responsibility.
I had to do in patient treatment a few months ago and decided to look through my social media posts and personal journals and I saw the weirdest thing- I didn’t target POC in my field in weird tirade to make myself feel better. How strange.

Also, if you want to support any book that gets indefinitely checked out, please make a request for your library to more copies/order copies from other libraries. That way the author will get another sale.
I saw a TikTok from someone who works in publishing about the new 2027 date for the book. They basically said that most contracts stipulate a timeframe that the book must be published in, and so that was probably the end of that window. Depending on the details of the contract, they may be buying themselves time to find a way out of the contract, or they might just end up publishing it with no promotion.
The publisher followed up clarifying that they’re not publishing that book or any other book in that contract at all.
Good luck to them bec. twitter will have the receipts in 2027 too.

Usually when an author’s book is debuting they’re excited and at least waiting for it to come out before they do dumb sh*t. But she seemed to internally think her book was already a failure and lashed out - I mean just wow. The white (it’s the straight up demand of privilege) fanfic toxicity truly came out in her and she started going after everyone like they were on AO3. She absolutely planned this through and has done this before. With her sloppy behavior I hope everyone turns this into a positive and goes to read and support the authors she attacked - especially the indie author! Wtf.
Edit because of rage: how dare she say it’s was the depression and addiction that made her do it. No - it does not make you go out of your way to make fake accounts and try to bury other peoples work beneath your reviews - her response was embarrassing and just added sh*t to the sh*t pile - how convenient for her to turn herself into a victim. As someone who suffers from depression and anxiety myself and have family who have been through some of the worst things imaginable due to addiction and depression, she is insulting - and that is the nicest way I can say it cause I called her a lot more in my head.

There was a conversation about this on Bluesky a few days ago and some former friends of hers said that she'd been behaving like this for years. From the sound of it she doesn't see people as friends, they're either tools for her to use, or enemies. If you're a tool she'll be nice to you, until she doesn't need you and then she discards people. I'm paraphrasing what was said because Bluesky is still invite-only and I don't know if I can or should quote people. They were talking about behavior that has gone back years, maybe a decade or more, in various fandoms. I really don't think this is a new thing for her. I do hope she gets therapy that works for her because that is not a normal or healthy way to live.

Brownies are little house fairies from English/Scottish folklore, it has nothing to do with brown people because it's a dialect variation of the Scottish words. When I heard about this I was like whaaaa? But not completely shocked, you know? But holy crap, Im more appalled by that those debut authors experienced their books being trashed by a fellow debut author. That alone had me spinning
Some people made the point that when you’re having a mental breakdown or struggling with addiction, you won’t have the mental strength/energy/focus to sit there for hours making fake accounts and writing reviews and making lists. And if that isn’t the truth.

Del Ray publishing came back and said that they will never publish anything by Cait Corrain, so she has ruined her career. Based on everything I have read I don't believe that she has depression and alcoholism, but that is me. When she got caught she made up a fake friend account to try and cover up her tracks, that is a lot of effort for someone who suffers from depression and alcoholism. I would have bought her book based on the cover alone.

not to advocate for the publishers, but i'm pretty sure it does take at least an afternoon to get in contact with everyone's lawyers/reps and actually dissolve a contract/take all necessary action. atp any dates more than two years in advance are placeholders, not fact. i also heard from people who work in book selling that, had they just completely wiped the book, it would have been a LOT harder to do returns for the pre-orders and refund customers as well as cancel orders (as many bookstores probably already had a certain amount ordered, also the illumicrate deal had to be worked out as well - MULTIPLE folks involved). i really don't think they were just "waiting it out" especially as this is a first in a series (initially i understood it to be a sequel and was like yeah they might quietly release it anyways but no, they definitely never thought to put it out regardless of losses as it'd be a pr nightmare)
I definitly understand the fear and jealousy of other books and authors as competition. But thats because i just wanted to be slightly.noticed. to have more than just my family and friends get my book.

Yes, tantalizing is a word! I like myth retellings, so I had this pencilled in on my 2024 releases list-alongside So Let Them Burn and Voyage of the Damned. Wild. Too bad this is the way I ended up learning about and checking out some other books.

Only thing I can say about the tea is that I hope people read the books that got book bombed and leave genuine reviews. The author, I hope she gets the help she needs (assuming that portion is true). I've seen what substance abuse does to loved one's, and it really brings out the worst in people. Mixed with alcohol? A nightmare.
As a side note, this time of year is pretty hard for many people. Always a good reminder to check in on your friends who might be struggling. ❤️

Wow I heard about a bit of book communiTea before Jess told the children, that’s a first😁 Jess you are a better person than me giving that bigot any sympathy. Looking at her actions, creating numerous fake accounts, inventing a fall guy, I seriously doubt the alcohol abuse shcpeel (?). Specifically targeting POC authors isn’t a symptom of alcohol abuse, and it feels awfully convenient that no one in her life was aware. She’s burned too many bridges.

A huge example is her stealing and publishing a book that was written by an Asian woman (whom she watched die). She uses a pen name "Juniper Song" to be racially ambiguous as the book is about Chinese laborers. So, this situation is not exactly the same, but it reminds me of the drama that surrounds the publishing industry (it evens talks about consumers, reviewers, twitter, etc.). It's a worthwhile read

It makes sense that Del Rey pushed the book back. I had an eArc for the book and decided that I wouldn't keep reading because of what she did. And everyone else was doing the same. The rating dropped to 3 stars and most people were giving it 1 star. This was the best thing Del Rey could do for damage control. And I don't even get why she did it because the book was already rated so well on Netgalley. People liked the book. So she went and destroyed all her chances for nothing.

Backlists and niche books. Passion reads. Reviews that go more in depth to characters, plot, structure, and execution rather than glimpsing over the whole book. I love videos that go into historical or contextual information of certain tropes and industry information.
Only partway through and you mentioned that you didn’t know if she had a book box. She did! And it’s Illumicrate which means a huge buy-in that she lost! Wild!!
She did that because she thought she wouldn't get caught. And instead of just saying "I was wrong, I'm sorry," she decided to try to blame her actions on alcoholism and mental health. Regardless of the reason, she still did it.

Reylo is such a toxic group. Given the things they have done in fandom, it makes sense that they would take those childish and racist tactics and use them in what should be a professional setting. They already got away with this type of behavior in fandom, so why not try to thrive off of it when money can be gained. That's why I give the other Reylos who outed this person no credit. They helped this person feel justified in acting like this. They don't deserve to be commended for taking out their own trash.

I love reading but I don’t choose my picks from TikTok or good reads. What might be a “bad” book to you, might be entertaining to me. There are books I didn’t enjoy reading but loved the audiobook. I take look at book opinions like I look at yelp reviews: a lot of 5 starts doesn’t mean I’ll enjoy it. A lot of one stars I’m prolly not gonna go but it’ll intrigue me to see what the complaints were and judge for myself if it seems valid otherwise just review bombing because someone got mad.
Audio books has helped me to love books for what they are. 😁

14:44 I have found with Amazon is that they’ll give fake publishing dates if the book has been cancelled or dropped so that may be on Amazon’s part and not Del Rey books. for example, the second part of the new moon graphic novel kept getting pushed back and eventually dropped because of the artists health conditions and Amazon just kept putting a publishing date for years and years in the future. It may not be Del Ray books. It may be on Amazon.

The "emily" you're thinking of was probably Emily Artful, who was the victim in that situation. The person making fake accounts on twitter and stuff was Creepshow art. No one else seemed to have answered that in a month and if you're like me that's bothersome.
Seems more likely to me that Jess was thinking of Emily Duncan, author of Wicked Saints, who was exposed as bullying some other authors, particularly POC ones like Hafsah Faizal a few years ago. Seeing as that was also a book community drama that involved another white woman attacking authors of color. I'm pretty sure that Jess made a video about that debacle, but like I said, it's been years so my memory's a bit fuzzy on the details.

@@nityat5596 There are two different covers. They did make another piece for commission, but they also made a cover for the book. The one people tend to use for thumbnail is the Diana Dworak's one.

I heard a few videos from people who received gorgeous ARCs for the author's book and read it. They said it was good. She should have let the work stand on it's own. Instead she decided to do this. Bring down other authors and debuts. It's so chaotic.
She lost everything because of her insecurities.

You should try 'Novice Dragoneer' by E. E. Knight! Def a slower paced book that let's you settle into the story of the mc. It sort of reminds me of following Talia in 'Arrows of the Queen' (which is defined a favorite flog of mine. My og mass market books have fallen a part from re reading so much. Lol) but def more first book vibes of that trilogy.
