      @ToonReel001 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Correct. I actually remember it getting some heavy promotion in the UK, like large scale TV and newspaper advertisements. From Europe's point of view, this was meant to be a big mainstream Disney sequel for Bambi rather than a cheap cash in, and the film itself could have likely convinced many that, especially the animation budget.

    I love how you brought up the animation in this movie, because in the "making of" special the creators DID try their damnest to get it as close to nature as the original did. And for the most part, I feel like they succeeded!

    • @MewKiichigo
      @MewKiichigo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    • @icecreamhero2375
      @icecreamhero2375 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      the only reason why they used cel animation in the original Bambi is because Digital animation wasn't avalible yet if they had digital ink and paint ( drawing cartoons on paper then scanning them on to the computer and coloring them with photoshop) then Disney probably would have used it

    • @KeybladeMasterAndy
      @KeybladeMasterAndy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mew Kiichigo Wait, so Andreas Deja worked on this?

    • @icecreamhero2375
      @icecreamhero2375 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      fun fact: disney invented cel animation first you paint the background, then you take regular copy paper then you draw sketches of 1 character moving a little bit at a time you use the light box to see your earlier drawings, then then the women take an see through piece of paper that looks like plastic wrap, they put the clear sheet on top of the sketch and trace it with ink, then it gets passed on to the painters and they paint the characters and they stack the clear peaces of paper on top of the background have a special camera and take a picture then you do the same thing 1 billion more times

    • @icecreamhero2375
      @icecreamhero2375 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      another fun fact disney also invented digital ink and paint in the 80's in digital ink and paint you make a drawings on paper then you scan them into Adobe flash, seperate the drawings and characters on different layers ( just like cel animation) then you color it in after effects or photoshop

    This was the best Disney sequel. There was so much character development and everyone was so likable in it. They also redrew the fighting scenes between Bambi and Ronno from the first film for this sequel, showing how they fought both as children and adults. There was so much foreshadowing that was really clever, and so many parallels to the first film. When I first heard about it I was like why? Why do a sequel to THAT? Then I tuned into it on Disney Channel by chance and I ended up loving it. I bought it on dvd, watched it with my dad, and grew closer with him as a result. Honestly? There's nothing wrong with this movie but your own nostalgia goggles or expectations going in. Take the goggles off and appreciate it for what it is as the missing chapter of Bambi's life, and this sequel is amazing.

    • @SonicdaShapeshifter
      @SonicdaShapeshifter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Melissa Smith Lmao someone's salty. I appreciated the parallels and thought it was clever how they tied into the first movie and gave Ronno character and a reason to be like he was. It showed a cycle of abuse that grew into adulthood. But go ahead and cry more about how this movie ruined your childhood by expanding on it.

    • @SonicdaShapeshifter
      @SonicdaShapeshifter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with you, sometimes you just need to stop exacting something from the nostalgia side, cause you never going to get it again. you can be a child only once XD and I think this movie was much better then most Disney sequel that come years later.
      and NO it's not terrible, anyone that claim it is don't know what a good sequel is. and I say it is a sequel cause that what it is! it come to develop a character in a way you didn't even know you can have, and after you have it you learn to appreciate the character you love years after much more.
      that what a good sequel should do!!!

    • @SonicdaShapeshifter
      @SonicdaShapeshifter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nori Ahroai I felt like it tried more than other Disney sequels to really be worthy of being tied to the first film. They could have done something really stupid and rehashed the first film like they did for other sequels, but instead they tried to fill in the missing chapter between his mother dying and Bambi suddenly becoming an adult buck. And I liked how they showed Ronno pushing Faline around as a young buck, and how they showed how Bambi went from a naive, fragile fawn with PTSD over his mother's death to a strong, independent and brave buck. The callback with the new doe saying "Run, Bambi! Don't look back!" and the scene with him right after was brilliant to me. The expressions they drew on his face were enough to convey what he was thinking. Other movies might have taken that opportunity to do an unnecessary flashback to his mother in the meadow and him running away, but this movie just gave the suggestion of him remembering that...and then choosing to call the dogs' attention and save the doe instead, even though that WASN'T his mother. Even if the other person on this comment thread is wholly negative about this movie enough to rave on every positive comment on this video about how terrible it seems in her eyes, I enjoyed the parallels, the callbacks, and the expansion upon the first narrative. To be honest, I wish Disney would put out a DVD splicing the second movie into the first so I could marathon it with my nieces. I also think that movies like this could help children who are dealing with having a missing parental figure in their life and new parents who don't know what they're doing. It's such a family film for broken families. When I get my teaching degree and there are days at the end of the semester where everyone is just putting on movies because it's the end of the semester or school year I'll definitely be choosing this one to put on for the kids in my class.

      yeas that called a "character development" when it done right, you full in love even more with a character you thought you love before.
      and in a way, this movie is mature. I like his father character much more now XD it the first movie he seem like the boring type of father.
      but I guess, everyone have their own opinion on it. I think it the best sequel, really the best! that would be prefect has a family movie for broken family's, not every family is perfect.

  • @YayChocolateYay
    @YayChocolateYay 7 ปีที่แล้ว +119

    In my opinion, it's great that the father wasn't the stoic, "you mean nothing to me" type.
    It's just such a tired cliche, and one that is very predictable. In fact, I think his personality was perfect for the prince of the herd. Strong, wise, not really all that playful but at the same time clearly caring for the animals he protects. A great leader cares about
    their group. A great leader does show emotion, they just know how to control it.
    And it's not like he just immediately becomes carefree and overtly happy. He had planned (and did!) to give away Bambi to another mother. It's not until he thinks Bambi died that he realizes how much he loves him. There's still the whole struggle with Bambi wanting to impress his dad, the dad being kind of wary of the whole idea in the first place, etc. It's the same development, just with a father figure who already shows some emotion.
    Diving a little deeper into this, the characterization is also great on another level. In media, the male leader figures often start out with the stoic archetype. Their development usually has the moral of "everyone needs to show emotion!", since boys are often raised with the idea that they should hold their feeling back. And sure, it's a great moral, but the one thing in these stories is that it's usually someone else that brings out their affection. Here, the male figure already shows care for others. It shows that men don't need to rely on others for emotional expression, they can do it themselves.
    In the context of the movie, it's great because it makes the relationship between Bambi and his dad more personal. Their interactions are not hindered by their personalities, the only thing that determines how they act towards one another is how close they are.
    Overall, great review. I do agree that it's definitely not the fist movie, but, IMO, it doesn't need to be. It's great on its own.

    • @alyssabullock6421
      @alyssabullock6421 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. There's no point in making a movie about how Bambi grows with his father if his father is so stern and tough all the time.
      I loved seeing The Great Prince finally being able to open up and show his softer side because he has a son to care for. It's something i find important for a movie like this , because it gives him character and impacts the moments that he IS genuinely strict with Bambi or when Bambi gets mad at him.
      They bonded through love. We dont get father/child movies like this all the time, so it's great to see the father capable of emotions outside of strictness and nobility. He loved his wife and loves his son, thats all there is to it.

    • @LisaKoffler
      @LisaKoffler 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Bambi's father was taught that raising fawns is the doe's job, and to shut off his feelings, but he couldn't do that when Bambi's mother was shot and killed by hunters, and when Bambi nearly died when he fell off the cliff! I was especially happy seeing the Great Prince smiling and laughing with his son while they played together! He was strict, but he also had a tender loving side to his personality! He ALWAYS loved his family!

      It's called a midquel, because it takes place after Bambi's mother's death and before he reaches adulthood! Besides Bambi bonding with his father, we also get to meet Ronno, the bully deer! It gave everyone a better understanding as to how in the original film, he changed from a childhood bully into a dark monster, but Bambi STILL pummeled him, because Thumper taught him to be brave, while his father trained him to defend himself!

    "Faster! Faster, Bambi! Don't look back! Keep running! Keep running!"
    I love that scene because not only did Mena quote Bambi's mother word for word, but the filmmakers showed respect for the audience by not cutting to a flashback. As much as I love Frozen, even that movie made the mistake of cutting to a flashback when Anna found Elsa in her Ice Palace, which we didn't need to see because we already know why Elsa was traumatised and could understand what she was thinking just by looking at her expression. Bambi 2 didn't need to spell out why Bambi stopped and turned back after Mena cried those words. They were the last words Bambi's mother ever said to him.

    Okay i have a problem with this review and that's Doug's thoughts on the father. Yes, he's the leader of the forest. He needs to show to many that he is meant to lead and show courage. However, seeing a character who is serious being vulnerable makes him more relatable. i also think it was okay for Bambi to asks questions at a young age to wonder why he's so stern mainly because he's used to up to this point being with his mom, someone who wasn't very stern. Hell, in Kramer vs. Kramer, when the mother decided to leave, abandoning her parenting role with her husband, the husband, a workaholic, must balance not just work, but as a father as well, something he's not used to. And throughout the story, we see the dilemmas and sacrifices the husband goes through and that makes him relatable on trying to be a good father, even up to the last third during the court hearing. And that's what I want to see with Bambi's father, he shows he's a brave leader, but must try to be a father by teaching his son the same way and because he hasn't been with him all of his life until now, his vulnerability makes him relatable on taking the responsibility of being a parent.

      I get the impression that the father's few appearances in the first film really made an impression on Doug, and that he simply wanted a character who matched that impression in the sequel. The father we did get here felt a bit formulaic to him, and not quite like the same character, at least not Doug's interpretation of him. So it's more of a character-related pet peeve. He's definitely not saying that vulnerability is bad or that good parents should be stern and stoic.

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To Doug's credit, he admitted that his view of the great Prince was a "pet peeve" and said he was being "kinda nitpicky". I think the problem is that he loves the first Bambi so much that he's LOOKING for flaws in Bambi 2. The original Bambi had such a profound impact on Doug that he admitted that he rarely rewatches it. He suggested that it might be because "there's only so many cutesy wootsy moments I can sit through" but I think it's actually because he knows that he had an experience that he will never recapture and he's afraid of finding flaws in the movie that gave him that experience. He seems scared that Bambi 2 might be even better so he's picking out any flaws he can find due to his nostalgia for the original.
      I feel that Doug is speaking straight from the heart here. In many other reviews, he can assert his opinions confidently, even with beloved movies like The Matrix and Gladiator. Here, he sounds conflicted and it's BECAUSE he seems conflicted that I believe he's being honest with us, but perhaps not with himself. It's like there's a part of him that wants to call Bambi 2 a masterpiece but he can't bring himself to do so because he's worried that it would overshadow the original that he cherishes.
      Or maybe my pretentious psycho analysis is wrong.

      @-.-.11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tomnorton4277 I think you might be over analyzing. 🤷‍♂️
      In my opinion, I feel somewhat the same way of almost wanting to call Bambi 2 a masterpiece but can’t quite bring myself to it. Not because I feel it’ll over shadow the original because that, to me, actually is a masterpiece, but because there are flaws in Bambi 2. Many of the flaws he mentioned I agree with like the art trying too much to be like the original where you can appreciate the great job they did but at the same time it doesn’t capture the somber tender tone of the original all that well. Bambi 2 feels like a film that’s happy when it wants to be, sad when it wants to be etc. But the original had some tender tone to the whole film even when Bambi was just being a kid learning. Bambi 2 is great but it just isn’t quite a masterpiece. But it’s pretty darn close. Also Ronno in this was the weakest part of the film. Cliche bully character that acts too tough and when danger happens he runs away scared. Nothing interesting about his character to me.
      But maybe I’m over analyzing it as well. 😂

    The reason the Great Prince is all over the place in his treatment of Bambi is just like what a real parent is.
    A parent does not have to be stern all the time, only when he/she needs to be. Look at the first film when Bambi and he meet for the first time. Bambi smiles, but the Great Prince does not. He was in the presence of the other deer in the forest, so he needed to appear strong and stern, even for his own son.
    Also, while he is playing with Bambi, what parent wouldn't laugh with their child while interacting with them? Also, he was away from prying eyes, so his facade of sternness was still stable.

    • @LisaKoffler
      @LisaKoffler 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Great Prince had a strict upbringing himself, where he was taught "the old-fashioned way" of doing things, with ALL rules "set in stone!" In the first film, he was standing on top of the hill watching Bambi's birth, and all the forest animals visiting to meet him, and to congratulate his mother! When he appeared on the meadow with the other deer standing still in reverence, he was able to take a closer look at his son, and his ears moved forward in curiosity! He reappeared when Man was in the forest, and he helped Bambi and his mother get to safety, and when his mother was shot and killed by hunters, he was devastated that he couldn't save her! Despite his stern facial expression, he had REAL feelings, and he ALWAYS loved his family! As stern as he acted, he was STILL able to smile and laugh while playing with his son!

    When Bambi falls off the cliff and his father finds his body, you already know he's going to be alright because of the first film. The writers no doubt knew that it wouldn't fool anyone who's seen the first movie so they saved one simple word for that scene to make it as effective as possible.
    Dad.
    Before that scene, Bambi never referred to the Great Prince as "dad" in his presence, only using the word around his friends. He was still too intimidated to use such an intimate and personal title to his father's face. It's clear that the writers were saving it specifically for that moment. Also the actor voicing Bambi delivered it perfectly.

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The scene where Bambi is made to leave with Mena was also done wonderfully. The music, the gestures, the minimal dialogue in favour of acting, it was all truly heartbreaking and made really apparent how close Bambi had become to his father. It was the key point it genuinely felt like it could have come from the original 40s film.

    • @LisaKoffler
      @LisaKoffler 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      At first, Bambi called his father "Sir" out of respect - especially after admitting that he jumped over the large chasm with Thumper on his back, and his father commented that he didn't make a jump like that until he had antlers! I'm not REALLY sure if Bambi was afraid of his father, but he DID want him to be proud of him! The Great Prince sent Bambi away with Mena, because he was taught that it's the doe's job to raise fawns! After Bambi nearly died when he fell off the cliff, but regained consciousness and he called him "Dad" for the very first time, he was forced to realize that Friend Owl was right about him being the best one to raise his son! The way they nuzzled each other was wonderful, and he ALWAYS loved his son!

    Probably one of the better direct-to-video sequels.
    The deer call scene was taken from the book, but the context was different. Originally, the scene happened much later in the story, when Bambi was an adult, and he thought it was Faline calling to him. I think it works better that way.
    The only real problem I have with this movie is the same as what Doug said with the father being a stereotypical struggling parent and Ronno being a stereotypical bullying jerk.

    • @acspectator8636
      @acspectator8636 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bambi had more of his essential father and son time during his adulthood in the book, but Walt barely intended doing much with Great Prince back then other just having him for a little bit of stunts and barely making appearances(Bambi didn’t say anything to him in the first film).
      That would’ve been the best ‘missed’ potential for Bambi’s adulthood(I than is coming from a guy he grew up and seen the movies first).

    This midquel really rolled with the "son longs for his distant, emotionally boxed father to genuinely care about him" story on all cylinders, and it wasn't by any means bad with the way they went about it. Their relationship is developed to a great degree during the course of the movie, to the point where near the end when it almost appears as if Bambi has been tragically killed that the Great Prince finally opens up on a personal level and shows he truly loves his son and future successor to the title more than he had been letting on up to that point. He sheds genuine tears when he believes for a moment that his one and only child is seemingly dead which speaks volumes to just how close they have become, especially the obvious joy and relief he shows when Bambi wakes up and it drives home the fact that they've truly connected as father and son. It follows on from just how little we saw of their interaction from the original film, and their relationship over the course becomes along the lines of Mufasa and Simba in The Lion King. Some of the parts in the midquel do in a way sort of remind me of their scenes together in the latter and the parallels are indeed there.
    I have to say, Patrick Stewart really shined as the Great Prince. I mean the man behind Jean-Luc Picard himself as a majestic buck, they definitely couldn't have chosen a better voice for that role.

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing I think I like about this version is that they decided to just make that the main story. There's no side ambition that's driving contention like Bambi wanting 'another purpose' or not wanting to be a prince or having forbidden love, he's genuinely just trying to make the best of the situation he's in and reaching out to this parent he's barely seen before, and I think that allows for more subtle personality focus than other cases over just tons of cliched rows and break ups between the parent and child which tend to just really wear thin with me.

      00ammy00 I agree o. the mysterious hard side that kinda falls flat in this movie. However I praise it for the emotion we see this character passing through along the way to the last second. Man if you look closely at him in some key scenes involving a reminder of the mother in a way or another while he's around, I swear it breaks me heart.

    • @itskatleo
      @itskatleo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      00ammy00 I understand what he's trying to say about the father, and I do love how mysterious he is in the original, but I actually really liked how the film showed him struggling to maintain this facade of Prince of the Forest and mold Bambi into a suitable heir, all the while grieving for Bambi's mother and coming to connect with and love his son. I felt that his struggle was one of the most compelling parts of the film--it may have taken away the mystery of his character, but I also felt it was very authentic.

    Since Bambi 2 came out 10 years ago, this film was such a huge part of my childhood and my favourite Disney sequel to date, I thought it tied in really well with the first one and kind of saw them as two parts of a whole instead of just an old classic and a thrown in sequel.

    I feel like if I ever made a movie where I avoid doing everything that Doug complains about, I make great, fun characters that he usually likes, I do a unique story that he always asks for, and I make it beautifully animated with kick-ass songs...Doug's response would be along the lines of "Yeah, I guess it was a good movie but it felt like it was trying too hard to impress me. I'm not saying it's bad or anything. But it could have been so much better!" Oh, Doug. Even a movie made specifically for you probably couldn't fully impress you. 😏

    A note about this movie that I think a lot of people gloss over is how well this movie presents The Great Prince's relationship with Bambi's mother. it's never overly stated or given this great speech. It's just filled with these quiet moments that mean so much more. For example, there are times that when the mother is mentioned, you see the hurt, the longing on the Prince's face. And for me, this is one of the best secret parts of the film. It made me interested in this backstory, I wanted to know more. And it was done with just the right amount of finesse that it was very moving without beating you over the head. For me, it's the little things that makes this movie worth watching.

      Tater Down 2010 was a great science fiction movie that has a lot of continuity with the first film's plot elements and design. It doesn't try to be as artistic or beautiful as the first, because that's just impossible, especially without Kubrick at the helm. But it's definitely enjoyable and it's really cool to watch.

    "You hear your mother calling you from downstairs.
    But across the hall, you hear her voice again:
    "Don't go. I heard it too." "
    Plus, I just love Patrick Stewert's voice, so for that alone, I might watch it.

    I freaking adored Bambi II as a kid. That scene Doug brought up with the hunter's whistle? That was my favourite scene from the movie. I found it so fascinating in that man had such an advantage over the deer, an almost mind-control level of hold over them. Ever since then the concept of overcoming adversity from a mental or psychological aspect has been a favourite to see.
    However, I admit that Doug is right with the father. The film should've ended with Bambi and his father standing in the exact spot they did in the original, and Bambi questions his father on his stern nature throughout his childhood, and then we learn his reasons and see the former king of the forest go down to see the grandchildren up close, Bambi following behind him.

  • @soloragoldsun2163

    In the novel, the Great Prince is much more similar to Doug's ideal picture of him. He is distant and stern throughout the book, and Bambi just comes to accept that. Heck, it isn't until Bambi's an adult and his life's in danger that the Prince openly calls him his son.

    This is by far my favourite disney sequel so obviously im biased, but IM SO GLAD you appreciate the artistry and storytelling of this film. I think I had just assumed you'd rip into it because it wasn't the original, but all of your points were very mature and valid, and I agree with them! Bambi 2 was also the biggest inspiration for me becoming an animator, and now I am, so IT's a VERY personal film for me.

    I always interpreted this movie as not just being a "dad tries to learn to be a dad" type, but also a movie where Bambi learns to cope with the fact his mom just died and the trauma he got from it. We see him looking longingly after his friends when they go off with their moms in the beginning, we see him go into the meadow (the place where his mom died) on the chance the call might be from her and she's alive only to freeze when the dogs show up and his dad sees the glare from the hunter's gun. Then we see him overcome it when his mom's friend who was going to take him in is caught in a trap and is shouting the exact same words his mom shouted to him before she died by taking the attention of the dogs off of her and even going out into the meadows to hide and fight back against them.
    I dunno, but that's just my interpretation.
    Also, yeah, the rival deer is supposed to be Ronno (the bully). I have a book of Disney stories retelling different movies from Snow White up until the end of the 90s, and Bambi is one of them. It was released before Bambi 2 and the rival deer was named Ronno in the book. The original book Bambi is based on also has the rival deer he encounters as an adult named Ronno.

      Your interpretation is NOT wrong at all! BOTH Bambi and his father were equally devastated over Bambi's mother's death, and their relationship did NOT get off to a good start! The Great Prince sent Bambi away with Mena, because he was taught that it's the doe's job to raise fawns, and after Mena yelled Bambi's mother's last words, Bambi was determined not to let history repeat itself, and he helped his father save her life! After Bambi nearly died when he fell off the cliff, his father was forced to realize that "the old-fashioned way" is NOT always the best way, and that he needed to put his son first, and protecting the forest second! He loved his son more than anything else, and he FINALLY started showing it! As for Ronno, he was BORN a bully, and in the first film, he changed from a childhood bully into a dark monster! He couldn't win a fight against Bambi, because Thumper taught him to be brave, while his father trained him to defend himself!

      You should at least give it a chance. I didn't like it when I first saw it but I found a copy of it on TH-cam and they split the second ones in two. the first one and I thought it worked well.
