To be fair though, Pixar damned us with Cars 3 before Inside Out came out. Let's just hope that when Pixar starts to come up with more ideas, we do get a sequel for Inside Out rather than other ones.
+Costin Alex I don't think they actually care that much about Cars though. It's probably just Disney commissioning them to make more money. The toy story films makes sense, they actually care about those characters and stories and want to take them to new places. Plus they are finally doing sequels of their other good movies like Finding Nemo or Inredibles, and they actually waited long enough to give them time to plan good follow-ups.
The collapse of Honestly Island derailing the Train of Thought was one of the most brilliant visual metaphors I've ever seen in a film. Ever. Period.
13Zeroither Well, spoiler warning I guess.
There's a scene at the start of the third act where Riley is mentally breaking down and preparing to run away and take a bus back to her old home. The emotions *inside* are riding the literal Train of Thought back to the command center to restore the happy memories and sort everything out, when Riley steals her mom's credit card and uses it to buy a bus ticket, this causes Honestly Island *inside* to collapse. It crashes through the rails of the Train of Thought derailing it and taking it down too.
It's a visual metaphor for how dishonesty is literally derailing Riley's ability to reason, and her emotional breakdown is now dictating her actions without moral and logical tenants to guide her.

Bobby Ferg They may have had a train of thought, but mostly that felt like a cheap joke to me. I think Inside-Out used it in a far more meaningful way.

The best part is, they asked psychologists about depression and child development. I like that it shows how that shit ACTUALLY happens and that depression can be connected to change and not every single case must be medicated. That it's individual to the person and situation.

What sold me to see Inside Out was a special needs child psichologist saying how groundbraking this movie was for mentaly handicaped kids to actualy relate to themselves and to express their emotions to their carekeepers, as now they could take a "Inside Out" toy and point at it, or mimic how they are acting in their head, which in turn made both child care and plain treatment so much easier. A movie about emotions that can pull that off must be good, and when I saw it I was blown away by how it was even better than what I had expected it to be. Just like there are only a handful of videogames that have left me dumbfounded (Journey, Last of Us, Ori in the Blind Forest), Inside Out is one of the few I can list that left me touched and mindblown by the end. Bravo
That is fascinating. Maybe one of the brilliance of this movie is making psychology more concrete and easier to grasp. Personally I can understand psychology very well. My mind can make great leaps into the abstract. Some people can't though. So they would be better off with symbols. IMO the hardest to grasp is Freud and his model of the psyche. It is worth checking out though. When I do figure it out, it really amazes and inspires me. I can imagine a movie about it. I don't know if it could be made understandable to kids though. In Inside Out there is a bit of a Freudian scene. The characters get down to the unconscious, or whatever they call that realm.Riley has a deep and suppressed loathing for broccoli and clowns.
As someone *with* special needs, I was thrilled to see a movie that said that having emotions other than happiness is okay. I haven't seen emotional health handled this well since Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.
Idea for a sequel. Riley is 15 now and Sadness decides to take charge and holds Joy hostage in her room with duck tape around her mouth. While Sadness also steals some of Joys DNA so she can descise as joy when needing Riley to pretend to be happy. It would have to be rated R. LoL. What do you think?

THANK YOU! That's just what I told my friend, she's a dreamworks fan and she said she didn't like Inside Out because there were four negative emotions and only one positive.
There is no such thing as a negative emotion. Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear are all natural and without them you wouldn't be you.
+ThatNerdGirl 7 If she said that after seeing the film, she did not get the point of the story. Riley FELL APART because Joy and Sadness were missing! Without all 5 emotions at the controls, you will fall apart. We see it happen to so many people, everywhere, just look in the news. The best you can do to help is to tell them that it's okay to express their feelings. They MUST share their thoughts with someone they can trust in order to get better. It is fine to cry.
+andrewkful What's wrong with calling them positive and negative emotions? Positive and negative still make a balance.
One of my favourite things about this movie is the lesson it teaches parents. Yes, of course the message it sends to kids is VERY important, but the message to parents is very underrated. This movie does an amazing job with showing that it's okay if your kids start acting out or changing. It shows that them being moody or yelling might be an indication that something more is wrong, but not that your kid is a bad kid. That instead of just telling them to be their own self and just be happier, you should give your kids a balance of space while really listening to what they need.
Can't count the number of times I would lash out at my parents around Riley's age and would get grounded, when all I really needed was for someone to listen and give me a hug.
That, and the fact that as a parent, you have to teach to your kid that, sometimes, its ok to be sad, scared or angry. If you denied those emotions, you can't learn to control them. A very important lesson that I will use with my daughter.
I can't believe that I cried when an imaginary pink elephant who drives a wagon that flies when he sings died.
He didn't die. He was never alive in the first place. He was just forgotten, and wiped away from existence. He's a figment of imagination. Or at least he was, until... Well, you already spoiled it...
+TheGCritic He played a big part in the movie so when he does go you feel emotional. Even the scene where Sadness comforts Bing-Bong was a nice touch.
It's sad because it's part of growing up... letting go of your imaginary friend and growing up

Bing Bong's sad face right before he jumped out hurts my heart. And then he's so happy that Joy can go on to try to save Riley. That's love. I choke up thinking about it.

@@jinx1987 they didn't bring him back because, like the rest of this movie, this character moment is actually a metaphor for something WAY bigger. It's saying that, sometimes, you have to let a part of yourself behind if you want to go foreword. You can try to live in the past, but you condemn yourself to being hangry, sad and unsatisfide because you can't control the fact that things and people change. Sometime, even if this hurt, a part of you have to go if you want to be happy.

I don't think this is just a good movie, but this is an IMPORTANT one. I needed this movie. I'm 18, and this movie helped me to find a way out of a year-long bought of depression. I had never heard this moral, that you should embrace sadness and that it will help you heal. I had heard things similar to that moral, but never illustrated so brilliantly like they do here. It was a moral that I had to figure out myself, and didn't fully come to grips with until I saw this movie. I know and am so happy that a lot of kids like me, the ones who push their sadness aside because we believe that being happy will solve all our problems, will benefit and learn so much from this movie.

I remember watching this two years ago when I was depressed about graduating highschool and going to this college in my hometown instead of dorming at the college I wanted too. While watching that film I thought to myself tf is she so upset about San Francisco is so nice??? It kinda helped me realized that memories have good moments and sad moment but other than that it didn't help me at all

@@Jattel_2006 Yeah, as Doug said, the humour wasn't as funny as it could have been and the general idea of personified emotions has been done before but they did creative stuff with it and fittingly enough the emotional stuff worked.

Lewis Black as Anger is as good of voice casting as you can get in a movie like Inside Out. This too is my favorite Pixar film, before that The Incredibles held that spot.

+KTChamberlain Personally I though Hader as Fear was the best casting call in the movie. His voice almost naturally sounds panicked so it blended with the character even when he was just talking and not acting afraid

+KTChamberlain All of the casting was perfect, but Lewis Black as Anger was a stroke of genius. They even had him drop a reference to homosexuals (the "bear" joke) and cursing. It was just inspired casting.
The one idea I can see with Toy Story 4 is Toys vs Technology. With how we see kids demanding ipads, smartphones, and gaming consoles, they seem to put aside traditional toys for something new and shiny. It'd be an interesting warning to all bad parents to nurture their childrens minds rather than cave in and throw something at them to make them shut up. That'd be interesting.

+Anime America That... could work really well. Maybe they could have Bonnie meet this other kid who has a smartphone or a 3DS (or a knockoff) and beg her mom to get her one of those as well because of how cool they are, and maybe have the toy crew get a little jealous of them as well (3 showed us that the toys are not above interacting with technology. Maybe Trixie or Hamm can work the tech and get the crew amazed at this awesome new stuff, and maybe have Woody, Jessie, or Mr. Pricklepants get extremely worried [Woody and Jessie having to go through abandonment yet again, this time with no hope of finding a new owner, and Pricklepants because of his love of being theatrical about things]). But then maybe show that kids who play with toys -- kids who learn to develop their imaginations, practice different social situations, etc -- are better adjusted than those who rely entirely on technology for their entertainment. Merely one possibility of many, of course.
And who knows what Disney/Pixar will go with.

All kids should watch this movie just so that they understand emotions and life. I have never seen a kids movie that goes about these things in such a mature and beautiful way.

Inside Out is actually my 2nd favorite Pixar film (behind Toy Story 3) and my 3rd favorite movie released in 2015 (behind Avengers 2 and Force Awakens). It's always great to see Pixar release something spectacular.
I went to go see this movie with my family and I loved it when my sister and my mom didn't like it. but they love the fifty shades of grey movie. I lost faith in my family

Inside Out is not only my favorite Pixar film of 2015, but it is Pete Docter's masterpiece since Up.
The story felt emotional and heartwarming, the character development grows very well and interesting, and the animation (both the real world and the inside head) is just phenomenal. Both the balance and the message are the main focus that I really enjoyed. Heck, the last 30 minutes of the film summed up very well, very satisfying, and (of course) flawlessly.
I will love to see the sequel to this with growing-up characters, better development with the story, and more of the same emotional theme as the last one. Don't let me down, Pixar! I will be waiting for the upcoming films in the next 6 years or so. Continue as you please!
Breaks the whole thing of "no sadness, only joy". And as odd as it may seem, Criss Angel quoted how pain is beautiful (no sadism), because you know you're alive when you feel it.
I gotta say that after seeing this movie, I imagine everything with what their emotions are like. I imagine Woody with his emotions, Simba with his, and Mulan going with hers. I just love the concept, all of it.

I'm not making that up), and Let it Shine has too many religious references (most of the premise is about church and going 'against' it by enjoying rap music. Again not making that up).

I've noticed an ongoing pattern in most of the disneycember reviews. If he's talking about a movie everyone hated the top comments are usually "I really loved this movie" with no explanation. And if everyone loves it the top comment is "Ugh so overrated" with no explanation

This is one of the best PIXAR films period and it's from Pete Doctor who gave us Up, Soul and Monsters Inc. The guy is the best PIXAR director in my opinion since his movies are so great. This movie isn't my favorite but it is within the Top 5.
This movie needs to be preserved at all costs, especially in the time period we live in now
Inside Out is very special to me because it feels like it was made ABOUT me. When I was 11 (same as Riley), I moved from Iowa (Riley: Minnesota) to San Diego, California (Riley: San Francisco). I cried so hard in the first 10 minutes because I saw myself, frame-for-frame. Not only was it a big move, it was mid-school year in MIDDLE SCHOOL. SAME AS RILEY. Middle school is the worst years of most people's childhoods, and doing those awkward years in a new place? Arguably even worse. But I ended in a similar place as Riley.
I agree, Inside Out deserves a sequel! :D

I was happily surprised with Inside Out. It managed to do the near impossible for me which hadn't happened since HTTYD2 with what happened to Stoick. It made me cry. It's very hard to make me cry while watching a movie, but this film made me cry twice. Once because of what was happening to Riley, which hit very close to home. I moved when I was twelve, leaving everything I knew behind. That was the hardest thing that ever happened to me as a kid and I remember going through those emotions. Not to the point of running away, but I was definitely dealing with some anger and sadness issues. The other point that made me cry was when Riley breaks down in front of her parents at the end about missing everything and feeling bad because she can't be that anchor of joy for them. That hit me hard.
I loved Inside Out. I moved the year before the movie came out, and when I visited my hometown over the summer, my friend and I went and saw it together. And I cried, because I knew exactly how Riley felt. I miss my old friends, I miss all the activities and clubs I was in. So, I really connect to this film.

I'vve never cried from a movie but Jesus Christ this movie came so close. And I watched it on a god damn plane. I'm on the same boat as Doug, this is my favourite Pixar movie by far, and Top 5 Disney movies ever.

"They mean this stuff for serious." Yep. That's a sentence that made it through writing, revision, performance, and editing, and nobody thought that maybe, just maybe, they should replace it with something else. Way to go, Doug. Way to go.
It's amazing how they managed to accurately portray depression in a child friendly way. I think everyone should watch it, just to help them understand what depression really feels like.

There is one thing that I always disliked about Up that I really enjoyed about this movie, and it was the heartbreaking scene (no spoiling.) Where EVERYONE loved the heartbreaking scene in the beginning of Up, I personally found it to be way too depressing way too quickly. Yes, it's a good way to relate to the lead character, but it almost felt manipulative. In a way, it was on the right train, but the wrong track. Inside Out, however, fixed that problem. They built up to the heartbreaking moment, you got to know these characters before the moment which made it really pay off in the end. It earned the feelings that Up's opener wrung out of everyone, and knowing that they're both directed by the same person, Pete Docter, it shows that he learned from Up, he improved in the areas that he needed to (which, admittedly, were very few to begin with.)
+Archer Slam-BAM I'll say it is a shame that Up has such a GREAT opening. I'd say the best 15 minutes in any Pixar movie........ and then the rest of the movie just never gets that good again.

+Archer Slam-BAM How is it heartbreaking? No character can die in that setting. They're memories. Aside from some sort of brain trauma you don't forget things like that character.
My issue with the beginning of Up is that, at least to me, it was a foregone conclusion. When I first saw Up, I knew that Ellie was a goner just because I figured that they _had_ to be building up to something. (It's the same reason why I can't fully enjoy Titanic, only on a much lower scale) Now, it was beautifully done, but I can't help but be slightly bothered when everyone places it on some high pedestal and say that the rest of the movie sucked jut because the intro was great.
This reminds me of someone I talked to who claimed that The Empire Strikes Back is actually a very flawed movie because the big battle happened way too early near the beginning of the film on the ice planet instead of near the end like in most blockbusters. People have got to understand that storytelling doesn't have a fixed technique. Just because a scene is emotional doesn't mean that it's supposed to be a payoff. The beginning sequence of Up is simply the setup for the rest of the film. It's just done so well that people reacted strongly to it. The payoff is learning how to get over that grief and realizing that you can't live in the past. It's no coincidence that its main character is an old person while Riley is an adolescent. I took my parents (who're near the retirement age) to see Inside Out and they were pretty much bored through most of it. Perhaps because they don't relate to the problems of adolescence anymore. It's not a flaw, it's just a different story.
watch it become a really crappy TV series
+SoniKwolf1498 This is the kinda movie I hope they don't touch again, it's so perfect creating a sequel might ruin the experience, I can definitely see the emotions joke littered and become a trend in other Pixar Films, like their credit scenes can pay a ten second homage to Inside Out, like maybe what Toys think inside their mind. It was like in the first Cars how they paid homage to their other properties with a Cars spin to it.
Pixar doesn't usually do that. Unless shorts count.

I won't lie, this movie actually managed to make me cry. I had quite a few imaginary friends when I was little that I obviously had to let go as I grew up. So the part of the movie where Riley's imaginary friend disappeared pretty much killed me. The movie had a lot of good moments that many people can sympathize with.
I took a short psychology class in high school and we watched inside out the last couple days. I’ve never seen it before and I assumed sadness would change a lot to make her more happy. It didn’t do that and it is amazing. I always try to force myself to be happy no matter what, but you do need to be sad sometimes. Pushing everything down isn’t healthy. Everyone need a good cry sometimes

I'll be honest, I took my niece to see the movie and while there was some clever writing and good laughs to get the adults involved, I didn't think that it was as groundbreaking as people were letting on. Great film nonetheless.....

I managed to see this at the Edinburgh film festival and it was one of the best experiences I have had. There was nobody there under the age of 20 and there were many tears.

I absolutely agree with this. Especially about the potential sequels. Although there is one opportunity for a sequel that I think they should explore, but it's not about Riley. I want to take a look at a different human for a sequel, because it's really the only way to see a movie regarding Fear as the leader emotion. From what I've seen in this movie, every person has a leader emotion (unless they all equally work with each other like Riley's does later). And as someone with anxiety disorder, I can easily say that having anxiety is like having Fear as the leader. I just think it would be great to use that concept for a sequel in order to explore the theme of dealing with anxiety.

The teaser for the sequel just came out. It looks like Doug will be getting his wish with four new emotions showing up. One being Anxiety.

It covered basic childhood emotions. Riley has yet to fall in love, for example.
Here i am hoping for the more adult emotions like Lust, satism, greed, etc.

_Inside Out_ is a legitimately *great* film.
Personally, I think what made this film so special was its unique way of making us (the audience) look within ourselves and be kinda "introspective" in a way, in regards to our emotions and mental well-being. A really _effective_ film, this.

+EeveeParty97 problem is that if they do a boy, they can run into several "stereotypic" roadblocks. Such as them worrying about their masculinity and utter phrases like "No Homo" or "I totally like girls" Or it can go a bit apeshit like with that one dude Riley bumps into. For me, because of the movie, I'm just more interested in seeing Riley's development into adulthood and the emotions' reactions to the new situations.

3:44-3:58 I can say the exact same thing about Zootopia. I would really love to see more of that movie. More stories. More characters. More ideas. Even a way to debunk the theory of "a society downfall caused by overpopulation".

Gerry McGrory well they could continue with the theme of prejudice. Prejudice doesn't go away over night. As the Vivil rights showed, black people got their freedom from desegregation, but prejudice didn't disappear over night. It went away slowly but continues to read its ugly head in subtle ways

I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!! Voice acting was awesome, every actor brings their roles to life, SUBLIME animation from Pixar (this movie looks gorgeous!), very likable characters and a brilliant story and screenplay that moved me to tears and made me relate to Riley in terms of trying to find myself and still having a hard time understanding my emotions even as an adult.
One of my favorite animated movies and my personal favorite PIXAR Movie. IMHO a far superior movie to Frozen.
I absolutely agree with you and I love how therapists are using this movie to help kids understand and deal with their emotions!

This film has a lot of emotional importance to me. When I first saw it I found out that we were moving soon and I was extremely depressed. Then I saw this movie and while it didn't make me feel better, it gave me confidence that I will be able to start over.
This is in my top three Pixar films for sure, along with Wall-E and Up. It might even be my favorite, it's hard to tell. Those are all such good movies. CinemaSins actually burst out laughing at the end when we go into the hockey boy's head and he's freaking out over Riley with the "Girl! Girl! Girl!" alarm going off. I've never heard him just lose it like that in a review before.
Heck yeah this movie is great. I freaking love it. But UP is still my favorite pixar movie. I'd have to watch them both to see which one is better because I love them both so much.

I absolutely adore Inside Out too! I saw it after my first week of college, and that timing is one of the biggest reasons why it hit me so hard. My college is ten hours from my home, so I could really relate to it. Such a brilliant movie!

I dont. I was actually bored throughout most of the movie. And people saying its original is irritating. Toy story: Something happens that causes a negative emotion for woody. because of this, woody and buzz end up lost from andy, and they have to find their way home. Inside out: Joy and sadness argue because of something or other, because of this, they are away from HQ and have to get back. Its the same story copy and pasted with some difference

basically, 2 important characters argue and end up lost from where they are supposed to be. When they finally work together and stop arguing, things work out and they manage to get back to where they are supposed to be, wood and buzz get back to andy, and joy and sadness get back to hq. Its a very similar basic plot, with differences with the characters.

The perfect intro to the next Pixar film. It starts with Riley's emotions at school, then it goes into Joy's emotions. Then into her emoitions' emotions. And then her emotions' emotions. And then into those emoitions' emotions. And then it ends because are minds are blown.
As much as Inside Out 2 was a good sequel, this one will always make me cry at the end

Tintin Tim I know that but it's mostly about the principle question why it took them four months to dub the movie when like every other country managed to do so much faster and release the movie somewhat the same time as in the US! Plus, I don't watch movies in cinemas, not even Star Wars. I wait for the Blu-Ray to release to watch it in the language I saw the trailers in (why is English, of course). I know I'm weird but I'm just like that.

I actually remembered crying when I watched this is in Health class. Yes this movie is so good they play it at school. Anyway, I cried when the emotions said that Riley couldn't feel anything. I don't know but with the family problems I was going through at the time I bursted out crying as I related to that moment. I'm so glad Riley found happiness in the end.

I don't get what he means it could have used a little bit more humor, I was laughing my ass off throughout majority of the film. It has one of the funniest lines i've ever heard in a movie "BOOOOO pick a plot line!"
I agree there were a lot of funny moments, but I think there were several moments that were supposed to be funny that could have been funnier, like the clown scene. So it's just a little bit.

Bing bong dying is so sad I think anybody who struggles going into adulthood from childhood would cry at that scene. Just another masterpiece from Pixar.
This movie is also great because it showed that depression is not sadness, but the complete lack of connection with sadness. I think that was amazing.
I know that some therapy centers for children uses Inside Out merchandise to help kids express themselves. I love this movie.
