To add to the "Autumn Leaves" posts, there's historical resonance in that choice: it was regularly played by Ron Carter and Jim Hall as a duet, recorded on the first of their 3 duet albums. Metheny being a Hall acolyte makes it an appropriate choice.
Thanks for that reminder. I must admit, my first thought was, “Really, ‘Autumn Leaves’ for the millionth time?’” But then when they got into it, damned if I didn’t get caught up in that melody and those changes. . .
I might be totally wrong but to me it sounds like there is more chorus when he plays in the higher registers! Like there is as more chorus mixed in as high he goes.. at least to me it sounds like it.. I know it’s a new instrument with the Charlie Christian pups.. but he integrates some of his old vibes too
I'm one of those folks that misses his old ES-175 sound....I know Pat doesn't like to hear it and he argued that it wouldn't stand a blind test. HOWEVER, hearing this clip here - even with the phone recording - totally reminds me of the old ES-175 vibe. There is a sparkle there and a 'woodiness' that very well might be due to the Charlie Christian PU. Anyway, the playing here is amazing from both Pat and Ron Carter. Can't wait to see Pat solo this Sunday here in Switzerland!
Amigo, es tan singular que coincidan, que se dignen a tocar espontaneamente ante público, que lo de menos es el sonido, es pura historia para los fans de ambos.
I'm sure it was done out of respect for Ron Carter. Wes and Miles were and are Pat's biggest idols and Ron Carter was a major musical contributor to both of them. I do think that Metheny is now playing on the same level as they did - the perfromance here is spectacular.
Thank you for posting this!
I have listened to this today at Blue Note Tokyo! It was the fantastic live by Pat Metheny and Ron Carter!
These two jazz masters really need to make a record soon!
I Was THERE! 😃 My wife, road dog, and I are even in one of the posters at the top of the balcony yelling down to Ron and Pat!
it's really cool to view from this angle
Wonderful memories :) Thank you for sharing.
It’s so nice discover new clips all the time with one of my heroes Mr Ron Carter. Here with another favorite Pat Metheny
So good!
Damn...I wish I was there. Amazing stuff! Thanx for the upload!
Simply sublime

I didn't know they played together, it's fantastic... and I could see both (separately) alive :)
This so good! Thanks for posting!

Do you have any more footage from this show?
No se escucha absolutamente nada el contrabajo ☹️ La grabación no puede ser más mala.

I believe Metheny has played with every cat from the the Second Great Quintet EXCEPT Miles and Wayne…I *could be wrong about Wayne, however…
It might have been better to have taken video from the screen shown at the end of this video ..oh well
Yeah but it was a delayed feed, but it would have been better
Please write Pats name right, Serge !
Metheny - sans the extra e 🕶
Aw, no guest solo from Kenny G? ☹️
You can't hear it.
hard to argue Pat's not one of the best.
I bet Ron told Pat to wear a jacket
