Why these two players never made a duet album is beyond me. They have such a significant history together, and both have demonstrated their abilities within this context numerous times over the years.
rest in peace mick! you will never be forgotten. go ahead, you free soul. your next journey is about to begin, and it will be just as beautiful as what you left us
one of the reasons i love pat's sound is the way he touches his guitar; another one is the way he plays often a little late some note... in the right way; another is the fact that he creates every solo with a melodic taste; may be that he plays this way because he did not want to learn the usual way to play: no licks, no perfection; so there is a lot of beauty; anyway they both are wonderful here
awesome!! so glad fo all this metheny footage! and goodrick is the icing on the already incredible cake!! Goodrick's book taught me so much about musical possibility on the guitar! it's nice to hear play with Pat! though for my taste i have to say the sound of the pick is what brought me out of a five year stretch as a finger stylist! there's just something more 'grabby' and 'snappy' sounding about fingerstyle leads in jazz/ awesome either way!
i always find myself coming back to this video. i mean i've seen and heard everything that a guitar in particular has to offer in almost any given style possible. i tried all these sounds by myself... ...but this video shows me again and again what it's all about. the guitar gets unimportant and all you hear is music. no pattern, no scales, no shapes. just melody. and total instrumental control.
@RegularJohn789 You can't really say that because if you asked Mick if he was a better player than Pat Metheny or if you asked Pat the same question they wouldn't say either of them was better, it really isnt about that. its all about what you play
Just imagine the comments if no one knew the names of the players : no name no image, just the sound. I seriously doubt that it would be something else than those dithyrambic ass-licking comments. Pat Is a great Player, Mick a great teacher, no doubt about that, but c'mon dudes nothing magic or extraordinary in this performace, educate yourselves please !
Man, Mick has such a light touch. Looks like very light strings with super low action. I think Abercrombie eventually did this, along with ditching the pick.
Although I studied with ( the late ) Mick Goodrick for a semester and then again about six years later, I never heard him solo, not until here. It's a real treat, and, as always, provocative, educational!
If you turned down the volume and just watched Metheny play, you'd swear he'd sound like crap just by his physical technique. Looks all awkward, like he just started play and yet the contrary is true of his command of the instrument.
Such a beautiful version of this tune by two master guitarists!
And the third watching.
Third master are you.
Beautiful song.
Salut, Jens.

Wow! I love this video. The Advancing Guitarist book by Mick is a must have for anyone who loves this video.
Working on it right now!
So cool to find this vid, thanks for posting…..Rip Mick Goodrick, forever grateful for all the musical wisdom you shared
Beautiful playing by both Metheny and Goodrick.

Wtf
Well, I really like Metheny but to say ”no licks” is just not true. He has a lot of signature licks he employs all over the place in many solos.
RIP Mick Goodrick. 1945 - 2022
That last note Mick plays before the finish sends shivers down my spine..... Wow
Beautiful piece of music
Great Great Stuff. Learned so much from these solos already. Masters
Deep understanding about the song, the harmony and rhythm. To great guitar players. A bliss.
Wow! I don't know of any other guitar player (ever ) who can outline changes like Pat. It's pretty much perfect in this piece.
R.I.P. Mick Goodrick
Two wonderful players
absolutely beautiful! both of these guys are masters
RIP Mick Goodrick
Two very different players creating magic as if they were one. Sublime.
Mick Goodrick, the Maestro
Pat and Mick, you are some guys!
La guitare !!!!!
Quel instrument magique entre les mains de Pat et Mike
sans omettre les autres bien sûr mais l'osmose d'un duo est magique
RIP

@patmethenyavatar
Wow! Doesn't Mick Goodrick sound heavily influenced by Jim Hall? He has his own thing, but the influence really shines in the slower passages. :)
I think it's fair to say that pretty much all the jazz guitarists of Goodrick's generation were in some way influenced by Hall.
I find Mick's style more like Luiz Bonfa who did a lot of work with Stan Getz back in the 60's.
Maybe he missed the toothbrush from his ES175.
Gee, these guys aren't too bad at playing guitar are they?
why do I even play guitar?

Mick's comping here is absolutely fantastic...wow
just listen to mick's comping...
Man, Mick has such a light touch. Looks like very light strings with super low action. I think Abercrombie eventually did this, along with ditching the pick.
still love this music!!
both are the masters,beautifull tones
can anyone please tell me why whats with pat and the tape and pencil
tape holding the pencil which pat uses to hook his cable (which he doesn't in this video and yes I know this comment was 5 years ago hahah)

@Veronica Andrea 😍 un regalito!!
@RegularJohn789 I agree. Popularity does not equal ability, does it?
Looks like a Bardens HB.
Love these guys! The music for my soul, my favorite!
Awwwwwwwww yea!
Q merda
fantastic!
yeah!
Meditation ❤❤❤
What is the guitar that Mick's using? Does anybody know?
That's a Steve Klein guitar
